Post by m***@gmail.comPost by m***@gmail.comHello Group! First time poster; was hoping someone could tell me if John Fobes (1608 Aberdeenshire (?) - 1661 Bridgewater, MA) has any source documentation for his supposed noble and royal lines? From what my records show, his parents are indicated to be the (Rev.) John Forbes (1568-1634) and Christian Barclay (1557-1630) Thanks! Leon Messenger
Thanks for the reply, I have seen all the various sites such as WikiTree, Ancestry and Our Noble Kin type of research; unfortunately none of them make the required grade of source material needed. The House of Forbes shows the line down to the Reverend John Forbes, and footnotes which state that his son, John, a Colonel in the Dutch service, died dsp.
I'm glad you mentioned "The House of Forbes", by Alistair and Henrietta Tayler (1937), as that's a very thorough genealogy of all the branches of the Forbes family. If it doesn't show the immigrant to America, it's a good bet that the linkage is wrong.
The Wikitree profile for John Fobes, including the biography of his supposed parents, appears to be based on "The Fobes Family in America", by Lawrence G. Fobes, available in two editions online via the FHL. Both editions start the biography of John Fobes by saying that he is "by tradition" son of Rev. John Forbes. One edition (probably the earlier one) precedes the John Fobes entry with a one-page biography of Rev. John Forbes, which is clearly the source of the info in the Wikitree profile. The end of the bio of Rev. John Forbes tries to justify the "tradition" of the Forbes connection, but it includes the very specific statement that "This tie is circumstantial and cannot be accepted as proven". Apparently many descendants of John Fobes have chosen to overlook this caveat. :-)
