There is a splash page announcing the new 747-8 intercontinental.

Live webcast February 13, 2011 at 11:am pacific time (19:00 GMT).

On Nov 5, Boeing announced it had achieved "power on" for the 747-8i.

Anyone know what the Feb 13 announcement will be ? Is this just the
unveiling of the aircraft ? ( a bit like Airbus did for the 380 weeks
before first flight ?)

Even more interesting.. 13 Feb is a *SUNDAY*. At that time,
most who are not interested in aviation will be tuned to more
sports-oriented things (read: football/basketball) or the end of the
Sunday morning talk show circuit. Why Boeing would make this
announcement on a Sunday is really questionable.

I guess you're implying that there's something they want to hide, but
making an announcement on Sunday means it's positioned for headlines on
Monday...

[My impression is that when somebody wants to bury something, they have
their press-conference on Friday afternoon -- business news has less
impact on the weekend, and it's "old news" by Monday.]

Quite the opposite. Businessmen, the press, and the higher-ups
in the industry are wont to spend time with their families over a
weekend, and Sunday moreso than Saturday. Same pretty much goes for
those with an interesting in aviation and aerospace (airshows
notwithstanding). To pull something like this out on a day in which
they'd want to be with their families, or not in a position to get
there because of family is the questionable part.

If it were to be at the beginning of the business week, it
would make more sense to be positioned for headlines that day; that
morning, to be exact.. especially when the stock market opens. It also
gives the press a bit of something to race for, in who gets the story
out first; generates more press at that.

Quite the opposite.
<... yada yada ...>

Anyway, this is all speculation of the most fluffy sort.

Not worth a long thread.

Is it agreed that it is the unveiling of the 747-8i ?

When the 380 was unveiled, Airbus had a lot of pomp and ceremony,
including the political leaders from the european countries involved. Is
it possible that Boeing might do the same and have Obama present ? (his
schedule might have dictated that day).

Also, does the president have discretion/power to choose a replacement
for the Air Force 1 aircraft, or would that have to go through a whole
complex and public bidding process ? It would be a nice coup for Boeing
if Obama were to announce the purchase of two 7478is for the AF1 fleet.

If the USA were to replace its 747-100s for Air Force One with 747-8s,
would the "strenghtened" 747-8 be way too heavy and require too much
runway to really restrict the president's movements around the world to
only a few airports ?

When would first flight for 747-8i be likely ? Its power-on was
November 5th.

From a flight testing and certification point of view, how different is
the 747-8i from its freighter brother ? Since I assume the freighter
has re-enforced structures and different upper deck, does it make it a
totally different aircraft in terms of flight testing and certification ?
