Discussion:
Weird mobile problem - can anyone help?

Mike and I use our mobiles for communication regularly. Several times a
day. Some of this is in order for me to send him screenshots of a chess
game I'm playing with someone else as he is teaching me to play chess.
(Very successfully!)

Mike has an iPhone, might be a 7, and uses Vodaphone. I have a Samsung
galaxy A20e and use EE.

Suddenly the other day we stopped being able to send images to each
other. In my case I send them but they never arrive. In his case his
phone tells him it's failed to send. This has gone on for three days now.

Yesterday we tested our systems and established that we can both send
and receive images to other people.

We can send text texts with no images to each other and can phone each
other.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what might be going on?

They think you are a terrorist cell planning something nasty. The chess

McToodles can no longer send anything to my non smart phone: it goes to my
iMessage, even when he can clearly see he’s selected my fobile number.
PITA. I can send texts to him from my not smart phone. Virgin on the
ridiculous.

Well, that may or may not have worked,. When I posted it, and again when
composing this follow-up, my arrows lie (more or less) under Markov.
When I open the message in Thunderbird, they're miles away. Sorry for
any confusion this may have caused.

The chessgame is a coded message.
Once upon a time someone called Rutherford was actually
led to devise a code for transmitting chess games, to get
around the Post Office's bar on digits and ciphers in telegrams.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_notation#Rutherford_code

If your need is great there's, just below that,
a link to the Forsyth-Edwards Notation -- a fine addition to
the line of double-barrelled solutions and fallbacks -- for
recording and sending positions in plain text.

Sadly know. I do know that my wife cannot send sms other than as text
or receive sms other than text and this situation has persisted for many
years. Nor does she have an answering machine on her mobile. I
sometimes wonder why she has a mobile. Her payg plan has no data
connection so outside the home her phone is about as much as a phone!
(If you get my point).

Have you perhaps exceeded some data limit known only to EE and/or Vodafone?

Krw I have a virgin media phone. Had it for many years since we had
them for phone/internet. We don't now. Every now and thenI used to
ring them and say I'd get a sim only a/c as I only use phone and text
And they'd give me a cheaper deal.

For some years I was on £2.50 a month for loats of texts and free
calls to most places. Then I got data and it went to£5 and is now for
some reason £5.12 and I get 1000 mins calls, unlimited texts and 2kb
data a month. My data might be 1kb as leftover is carried for a month,
but I don't use it much. I can send photos etc. I do have voice mail
too. Only one thing is texts can take hours to arrive. B thinks I am
low priority as cheap. But might be worth checking out?

The wife is on payg. She puts £10 credit on it at odd intervals but
mainly uses it as a Facebook / Messenger terminal on wifi indoors. She
has a pretty new ipad but that seems to lock up so that the screen is
unresponsive since the last ios update so it looks like Apple have got
problems and explaining an intermittent fault well enough to google a
response which solves the problem is beyond me. My ipad has become
similarly unresponsive at times hence blaming the ios upgrade.

I mainly don't use mine; probably more as a wifi detector (the Android
app. for that is very good) than anything else.

If you can stand being served by what appear to be teenagers, visit your
local Apple store if you have one; we (my blind friends both have
iPhones, and she at least loves hers) have generally found them very
eager to please, and helpful. (Most recently, Julia wanted to turn off
the 'phone's ability to switch from portrait to landscape and back
depending how you hold it - that ended up needing three of them! [To be
fair I suspect any one of them would have known, if Julia hadn't had
speech turned on, which changes how it behaves a bit.])

The stores - at least, the Newcastle one, and I suspect all - do tend to
be noisy, though. Not that any individual person is, just the
construction (large space with mostly hard walls).

chess game I'm playing with someone else as he is teaching me to play
chess. (Very successfully!)
Mike has an iPhone, might be a 7, and uses Vodaphone.  I have a
Samsung galaxy A20e and use EE.
I would ask on the EE forum
<https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/4G-and-mobile-data/bd-p/4g>
I would also pop into one or both shops when you're next near them. I've
found them both very helpful in the past with problems I couldn;t sort
out myself.

I "popped" into a Three shop to ask about a problem (lack of WiFi
Calling) and got a helpful response along the lines of.

"Yes I know. Wretched isn't it?"

That's what you get for having a paranoid android phone.

Only down the left hand side, I should imagine.

Mike and I use our mobiles for communication regularly. Several times a
day. Some of this is in order for me to send him screenshots of a chess
game I'm playing with someone else as he is teaching me to play chess.
(Very successfully!)

Maybe an almost full allotment from your/his provider?
My neighbours email began to fail when a friend mailed
several powerpoint funnies to him.
Leaving all your mail on the server can also hit a barrier.

If both have managed to send and receive images from others I don't see how
'inbox full' can come into it.

If there is a few MB allotted space left, then a small email can get
through, but one with a pic of their gameboard may be too big.

Mike has now installed WhatsApp so we have a solution.
Thanks for the suggestions, folks.
