The Op.111 here was not good, start to finish. The Schumann was the most successful of the program. Nothing legendary, but in fairness just 1 recital, and an off day? Just IMHO,of course. I defer to the Haskill experts.

I'm 71.5 and probably know how you feel (not exactly, of course). My
main problem is lack of stamina. I can play ball and run around with my
grandchildren but after 10 minutes I'm wiped out. I think it's mostly
because I'm almost completely sedentary more so than age itself. My
wife swims or works out every morning. She's in better shape than me
despite two artificial knees and one hip.

The Liszt sounded different to me, more improvisatory in parts? OTOH I'm
not really all that familiar with that work, maybe it's just that.

World premiere of Charles Villiers Stanford’s Violin Concerto last month in England, at about 18 minutes into this broadcast. Per the BBC presenter, the work , by then 23-year old composer, was shown in 1875 by the composer to Joachim , but BBC gives no reason why not performed “in public” until now. To my pianophile ear the 37-minute work is well-crafted,although perhaps not memorable, on the lighter rustic side, with the exception of the very fine slow mov. Worth a hearing IMHO. I did do a back-to-back repeat.

Recently heard in concert: pianist Juho Pohjonen playing two of Rameau's
"Nouvelles Suites": varied, stylish, and (to my ears) highly effective
renditions. A recorded version of one from back in May:

(Drier acoustics than
where I heard it, and recorded at low volume, so turn it up!) [In
program notes Pohjonen argues that some of Rameau's more-forward-looking
harmonic ideas work best with equal temperament, hence on piano.]

The second half of the recital consisted of three Scriabin sonatas:
enjoyable and technically assured, but don't ask me to comment on
Scriabin-performance style. :)

Last week we went to a Lincoln Center CMS concert featuring Pohjonen. Excellent program featuring the Arensky d-minor Trio in the second half. It’s quite a workout for the pianist! All three of the principal was performers were superb up-and-comers: Bella Hristova, violin; Nicholas Canellakis, cello. Hristova and Pohjonen played Mozart K 454, and Anthony McGill (of the NY Phil) played the Brahms Clarinet Trio with Pohjonen and Canellakis. It was all good but the Arensky was special. Pohjonen is technically and musically outstanding and has a very calm onstage demeanor. He’s also older than he looks—a real baby face :-)

folks who run the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Of the
pianists they regularly bring. (His Music at Menlo debut was recorded:

which has a variations theme. The Mozart sonata and Grieg ballade are

Thanks for yours, Al. We subscribed to the CMS concert series for many years but switched our allegiance to the NY Phil Ensembles for a few reasons (ticket prices, concert times, programs, and did I mention ticket prices?). So it was nice to reconnect via the CMS' engaging summer programs. I will look out for a solo recital by Pohjonen--indeed, for any appearance by him.

Reminded me how much the 2nd,3rd movs, of this Prokofieff “War” Sonata remind me nonetheless of his “Romeo et Juliet” score, although arguably that another “ war “ . Magnificent Rachmaninoff,makes a case Op.39 is the ultimate solo work of the composer.

How one plays , let alone memorizes, these works, even if playing them since they were 10 ….

VERY impressive here, even in the shadow of Richter. A pianist I will follow.

Recently heard in concert: pianist Juho Pohjonen playing two of Rameau's
"Nouvelles Suites": varied, stylish, and (to my ears) highly effective

where I heard it, and recorded at low volume, so turn it up!) [In
program notes Pohjonen argues that some of Rameau's more-forward-looking
harmonic ideas work best with equal temperament, hence on piano.]
enjoyable and technically assured, but don't ask me to comment on
Scriabin-performance style. :)

An excellent pianist , even if not always as interesting a pianist as I found him to be when I first encountered him years ago , but I follow him , and here find little to fault. Had not heard these works recently, and was good to be reminded how extraordinary these works are ( and technically demanding, even for Piemontesi, eg. end of D.935 , # 4,where he may have had a spot or two of strain. ).

I enjoyed the Viola Sonata,which at times had a klezmer-like quality,albeit sad. My first hearings of it today ( I listened 3 times !). Per Wiki, the Sonata was the last composition of the composer completed less than a month before his death in 1975. The last movement is apparently dedicated to Beethoven,with some tips of the hat to the "Moonlight" ( to my ear, in the piano part ).

Wasn’t really interested in hearing the work again just yet, but glad I did as I find Gerstein always interesting, and he was here, a very forceful,dramatic,darker reading, distinctive rhetoric, with cadenzas he may have composed which perhaps push the boundaries perhaps bit too far in the Romantic direction, but effective. Really made me enjoy the work again, which often seems too tame in most hands.
