I have had a device that lets me drive through the automatic tolls in
France for many years - it's invaluable when on your own in a RHD car
and the small charge is worth it also for avoiding queues and stops to
pay and my English CC gets billed once a month.

We also had one in Italy once we had an Italian bank account but we
couldn't find a way to transfer it to be paid from an English account
once we left Italy.

For this trip we tried again to fight our way through the awful Italian
Telepass site with no luck, but eventually I found this website:
<https://www.tolltickets.com/en/>

They were very helpful and answered my ?s satisfactorily so I went ahead
an ordered a Telepass from them. They will mail it to you, but as it was
a bit close to the 7 day deadline, I picked it up instead at the last
services before the Eurotunnel terminal at Ashford. It all worked
perfectly and saved me a lot of hassle as I did both out and return
trips on my own.

Strongly recommended.

I see that BrritSki said they can be mailed it to you. Does that mean
you'll find a French letter in your post?

I believe that's the origin of the euphemism anyway; at some point,
presumably before the London Rubber Company, France had a monopoly on -
or at least a large part of the market for - condoms. (Isn't condom
named after a M. Condom?)

How long has it been since we heard "anything for the weekend sir?" in

Ah yes, I vaguely remember "packet of three" (though have never bought
any, then or now).

I do remember with embarrassment being asked that once, because I didn't
know what it meant! I _think_ that was the only time, though, so
probably about four decades plus. Though probably remained in use until
much more recently - maybe even now - in some barbers.

The OED (and who would dare argue?) says

Origin unknown; no 18th-cent. physician named Condom or Conton has been
traced though a doctor so named is often said to be the inventor of the
sheath.

There is a cathedral city called Condom in France. A colleague one tried to amuse us by semdig a postcard (not a letter) to the office, but he bought a card of the wrong church (I have never been there, but I imagine his mistake was the equivalent of confusing Barcelona cathedral with Gaudi's church) and the postmark was smudged beyond legibility.

A postcard from Condom.
For reasons I know not, the song

A table near the band
a small one.
Some cigarettes, a drink
yes, a tall one.
And, waiter, I could use
a chaser for my blues

came to mind.
