I know this is a "Classical Music" NG but many great composers have
written music for films - Honegger, Shostakovich & Vaughn Williams to
name a few. Both Chandos and Naxos have ongoing series devoted to film
scores. I have a number of the Naxos recordings. Of the ones I have
heard my favorites are:
Shostakovich - Hamlet
Benjamin Frankel - Curse of the Werewolf
Honegger - Les Miserables

Not so interesting
Tiomkin Red River

What are your favorites? What about the recent releases?

I don't have any of the Chandos recordings yet.
Anyone care to make some recommendations.

There must be other labels that have put out interesting film music.

Without question - the Auric score for La Belle et la Bete - gorgeously
recorded. Richard

I am enamored with Brian Easdale's score for the film...and in particular,
the ballet...of THE RED SHOES.

Apart from a lot of the usual suspects, one film score I love is the
Sondheim-Tunick score for STAVISKY. Some of it wasn't used in the film
and some of what was used is barely audible in the film, but it makes
a great recording (despite somewhat scrappy playing on the soundtrack
recording).

The Chandos Bliss and VWs are particularly good; I like all the
Chandos issues, apart from DSCH which I haven't heard.
The Naxos Mark Twain (still available on SACD) is very enjoyable, too.

Auric - agreed! Wonderful.

Capriccio has put out quite a lot of film score discs, too. You can
get a taster from the clips on jpc.de.

Search for Shostakovich and Schnittke with Capriccio.

enjoy them very much.

Walton's score for Henry V is pretty good. Georges Auric also comes to
mind: Lavender Hill Mob; Passport to Pimlico; Titfield Thunderbolt;
Moulin Rouge; etc.

Would you consider Bernard Hermann a "classical" or "film" composer ?

I always liked Malcom Arnold's "The Roots of Heaven",which I actually
own an original copy of.

The Saint-Saens 1908 score for "L'Assassinat Le Duc de Guise" is
interesting not so much for the quality of utterance as for how
accurately it foreshadows so much of the cinema music which was to
follow.

The Chandos series is quite fine, but I certainly wouldn't want to be
without the Herrmann-conducted recordings of his "Devil and Daniel
Webster Suite" and his "Welles Raises Kane," not to mention his
wonderful "Portrait of Hitch," drawn from the score of "The Trouble
with Harry."

This list refers to Bernard Herrmann's "Beyond the Twelve Mile Reef" (London PO/composer, Decca Eloquence). First of all, the movie was entitled "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef" and secondly, Herrmann never recorded any of it with the London Philharmonic for Decca or anyone else. The original soundtrack, recorded in Hollywood, was once available on CD, but the LPO had nothing to do with that.

Somewhat off-topic:

A collection of Orson Welles' radio theatre productions can be
found here: http://www.mercurytheatre.info/

Much of it with live music arranged and performed by Bernard Herrmann
as conductor.

The sound quality varies to put it mildly. Still a treat though.

Hi,

I have not viewed it yet, but the new Sony Stravinsky big box includes a
DVD of movie music composed by him. He lived in the L.A. area for many
years, and had hoped to get rich via Hollywood, but things did not work
out that way.

Lieutenant Kije, Prokofiev.
Sinfonia Antarctica (7), Vaughan Williams.
Prokofiev's music for Lieutenant Kije is particularly interesting in that it was not only used for that (Russian) film, but also for the (British) film "The Horse's Mouth", which starred Alec Guinness.

what a luxury, I even get to copy one of my replies from the other NG --

RVW's 49th Parallel is one of those comparatively rare examples of a
soundtrack I own for a film I've never even seen. Korngold was top
drawer talent, perhaps too lush, but accounts for none of my top
drawer favorites.

It was a quick list, by no means exhaustive, but I should have
thought of Herrmann. The Devil and Daniel Webster and Fahrenheit 451
are two standouts, plus some of the Hitchcock scores.

I love the Woman in the Dunes score and yes, would add it in. Have Kwaidan DVD but have not watched it yet.

So far it's the omissions -- not the commissions -- that drew comment. That's what such lists are for.

I would want to include some Korngold, but I guess he didn't play
tennis (see context at the top of this list). :)

I don't collect film scores, but sometimes a movie I've seen is most
memorable for its score. One such was Barry's score for the 1971
film "The Last Valley" (Michael Caine, actually a pretty good movie).
Do you (number_six) know that one?

Hi Al, yes, I have seen the Last Valley and agree it's a good film, good score. Been a long time but I recall lots of intrigue between Caine and Sharif for influence /control of the area. They must have been on opposite sides in 100 years war.

Return of Martin Guerre also comes to mind now. Gotta check composer.

What I recall is that Caine was a soldier, Sharif a civilian in a village

The music when the soldiers first encountered the valley was particularly
memorable.

I did not see The Hours, but imdb confirms some Glass -- and some R Strauss -- in the soundtrack.

Glass has a pretty long list of film credits, not all equally inspired, but at their best, memorable and cinematically effective.

I'll crib this list from me own post years back in the tennis NG --
Arnold - Bridge on the River Kwai
Barry - Diamonds are Forever
Bonfa - Orfeu Negru
Delerue - Contempt (Le Mepris)
Glass - Koyaanisqatsi
Glass - Kundun
Jarre - Dr Zhivago
Jarre - A Passage to India
Mancini - The Great Race
Mancini - The Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Morricone - The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Morricone - Once Upon A Time in America
Morricone - Once Upon A Time in the West
Nyman - The Draughtsman's Contract
Olivieri /Ortolani - Mondo Cane
Popol Vuh - Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes
Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky
Rota - The Godfather
Shire - The Conversation
Theodorakis - Z
Thomson - The Plow That Broke the Plains
Glass did "The Hours" as well, if I remember correctly.
I did not see The Hours, but imdb confirms some Glass -- and some R Strauss -- in the soundtrack.
Glass has a pretty long list of film credits, not all equally inspired, but at their best, memorable and cinematically effective.
I warmly recommend "The Hours" as a movie.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

I know this is a "Classical Music" NG but many great composers have
written music for films - Honegger, Shostakovich & Vaughn Williams to
name a few. Both Chandos and Naxos have ongoing series devoted to film
scores. I have a number of the Naxos recordings. Of the ones I have
Shostakovich - Hamlet
Benjamin Frankel - Curse of the Werewolf
Honegger - Les Miserables...

What are your favorites? What about the recent releases?
I don't have any of the Chandos recordings yet.
Anyone care to make some recommendations.
There must be other labels that have put out interesting film music.

Concerning Tiomkin:

- During the 1950s he was the highest paid Hollywood film composer.
