THERE is a saying in Hollywood, attributed to Katharine Hepburn, about
why the pairing of Fred Astaire and Gingers Rogers worked so well: “He
gave her class, and she gave him sex.” Two familiar names in
entertainment that are teaming up for another pas de deux may not be
Astaire and Rogers, but they are giving each other something each wants.
The Turner Classic Movies cable channel is joining with two divisions of
the Walt Disney Company for an agreement, to be announced on Wednesday,
that underlines how media giants are increasingly collaborating on
content-marketing efforts.

TCM will help the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division make changes to
the Great Movie Ride, a long-running attraction at the Disney’s
Hollywood Studios section of Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
In return, TCM will receive “Presented by” credits at the attraction on
posters, banners, display windows, marquees and the like, which will
also display the TCM logo.

In the other part of the deal, another Disney division, Walt Disney
Studios, will provide TCM with vintage movies, cartoons, documentaries
and episodes of TV series like “Disneyland” and “Walt Disney’s Wonderful
World of Color” for a periodic programming block on the channel under
the banner of “Treasures From the Disney Vault.”
The block will be offered by TCM “roughly four to five times a year,”
said Charlie Tabesh, senior vice president for programming and
production of TCM.

“Disney films and other programming have been seen a little bit on TCM,
but not much,” he added. “It will be exciting to dig into the vault and
see classic Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, ‘The Wonderful World of Disney,’
” he said.

The initial block of Disney programming by TCM is to run from 8 p.m.,
Eastern time, on Dec. 21 through 5:15 a.m. on Dec. 22. “It’s a Sunday
night,” Mr. Tabesh said, “a perfect family night and getting close to
Christmas.”

Among the nine scheduled items from the Disney archives are “Santa’s
Workshop,” a 1932 cartoon; “The Disneyland Story,” in which Walt Disney
himself describes in 1954 plans for the park named Disneyland that he
opened in Anaheim, Calif., the next year; “Davy Crockett, King of the
Wild Frontier,” edited from episodes of a “Disneyland” serial about the
frontiersman; and “The Vanishing Prairie,” a nature documentary.

The changes for the Disney World ride are scheduled to be introduced in
the first quarter of 2015, perhaps in the early spring. What visitors
see as they wait for the ride and watch as part of the finale will
receive a reboot under the aegis of TCM, playing on its reputation as an
expert in classic film.

Among the new elements will be a video featuring Robert Osborne, the
host who has been the face of TCM since the channel began operations in
1994; he will identify himself as “from Turner Classic Movies.”
The idea is to “inject TCM brand authority” into the ride, said Pola
Changnon, vice president for brand creative and on-air promotions at
TCM, and “pique the curiosity” of visitors, encouraging them to explore
the world of classic film once they are home.

TCM is part of the Turner Entertainment Networks division of Turner
Broadcasting System, which is owned by Time Warner. The agreement
between TCM and the Disney divisions, for undisclosed terms, expands
upon a relationship between TCM and various parts of Disney.
For instance, the fourth TCM Classic Cruise, held last month, was the
second aboard the Disney Cruise Line ship called Disney Magic. And a
highlight of the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival, held in April, was a
50th anniversary screening of the Disney Studios movie “Mary Poppins” at
El Capitan Theater, which is owned by Disney.

“We’re looking at this as a strategic alliance that brings together two
very strong brands, both with a core in the business of entertainment,”
said Carlos Castro, vice president for corporate alliances of Disney,
“and complements Disney’s commitment to great storytelling and
delivering quality family entertainment.”

“Part of our process in vetting all our partners is making sure their
brands align with the Disney brand,” Mr. Castro added, “and both brands
are a natural fit.” The TV initiative “lets us share more classic Disney
stories with TCM audiences,” he said, and “the refresh of the Great
Movie Ride” will “enhance the guest experience by showcasing TCM content
and talent.”

Jennifer Dorian, general manager of TCM, echoed Mr. Castro in describing
the “multifaceted creative collaboration” called for under the new
agreement as “truly a natural fit.” That is important in content
marketing, she said, lest TCM viewers and Disney World guests deem the
partnership inauthentic.

Disney World, Disneyland and El Capitan are examples of what is known as
experiential marketing, which gives consumers a chance to experience
brands in tangible form. TCM has been delving into experiential
marketing with steps that include, in addition to the cruises and film
festivals, guided tours with classic-movies themes in Los Angeles and
New York; auctions of film memorabilia by Bonhams that are “presented by
TCM”; and annual screenings of “Miracle on 34th Street” outside the
Macy’s Herald Square store that is key to the movie’s plot.

According to TCM executives, the agreement began with an administrative
assistant, Amanda Tymeson, who returned from a visit to Disney World and
suggested “that TCM and Disney would be great partners” in revamping the
Great Movie Ride, Ms. Dorian said. Ms. Tymeson has since been promoted.

Thank you Steve. I wish they'd define "revamped" though. I fully agree with
a rehab/updating of the ride. And I've nothing against Osborne giving a
little spiel but TCM is the fiend behind colorizing old movies and I'll
never forgive them for that.

I am on the LOVE TCM side. Turner has done so much to save old films
and what they show is terrific.

John, are you sure about that? I know that Ted Turner colorized some
old movies, but did any of them ever air on TCM? Are you sure they
weren't just on TBS and TNT?

Even if TCM did air some of them, that would have been back when Turner
himself owned the station, which hasn't been true since 1996. I don't
see any reason at this point (if there even ever was) to doubt TCM's
commitment to classic movies.

I am with Patty, I don't think TCM even showed the colorized movies.
And I do everything I can to avoid them.

Or if I have to watch, I look for places the colorist missed. That's fun!

How about the place the colorist missed in a Disney animated film? It shows up every time I watch this particular film on television. I can't guarantee that it is the case for the theatrical version, or any of the home media versions.

Anyone want to take a guess?

Steve,

Thanks for sharing that - very interesting. I am waiting for the
expressions of outrage by those who object to any kind of
"commercialism" in Disney parks - never mind that in the early days, a
lot of attractions had corporate sponsorship. :-)

I wonder how much of the interior will actually be replaced, or will it
be more of a reboot of the movie clips in the pre-show and at the end.

You are correct - Disney has a long history of leveraging corporate
sponsorship for its parks. I see TCM as a great fit, and even companies like
HP and GM, too. I know people may feel that some companies are too
controversial for sponsorship, but really, every company has some "baggage".
GM has the whole recall issue, so does that make them an inappropriate
sponsor? Even though I have great disdain for GM, but I don't believe it's a
problem. What would anger me is to see totally inappropriate sponsors, like
"The Tower of Terror Brought to you by Viagra" or "The Jim Walters' Homes
Haunted Mansion".

It doesn't sound like a complex rehab since they say it will open with the

I wonder how much of the interior will actually be replaced, or will it
be more of a reboot of the movie clips in the pre-show and at the end.
The later. For now.

Hi Boom! Hope Shanghai celebrates with you.
There is not a lot of hoopla in China for Thanksgiving but that's a moot
point this year because I got dragged back to Florida to finish
installing some new show equipment (lasers to be specific). I might be
able to stretch it out through the end of the year too !!

So most the Boom family is gathering for the big feast. We'll need to
take over most of Epcot just to hold us all !!

Cheers !

It seemed like nearly every available cast member was on site this week.
I caught myself staring at nametags hoping for a surprise Boom sighting.
I think I ate enough Thanksgiving dinner at Boma to feed everyone...

Overdosed on turkey. The turkey-bacon Monte Cristo sandwiches weren't
bad. The turkey-squash casserole with marshmallows was horrid. I guess I
should have gone to Boma on that day.

We did run into Robert, who claimed to be the imperial ruler of RADP, at
Epcot on Friday and thus had to give him a tour of the Earth globe
barge. Our new holiday tag for Illuminations is quite pretty and should
be seen from Showcase Plaza for the full effect. Why is it that every
time I see a new (fan) article about Illuminations, the stated number of
shells in use goes down and the estimated price per night goes up ? Oh
well, the show is on its last legs anyway.

FYI the BAH will be moved in January - it will be put in storage and
returned to the park after ... well, you'll find out in January. The
Osborne Lights will also be on hiatus after this season (hint, hint).

The Africa Marketplace should open next March. The River of Light (is it
still called that ?) is on schedule for next summer too. There is also
lots of activity behind Kali (hint, hint).

At DTD, the first parking garage (aka garage '2') is open, as is the
food truck court and most of the pathways through and around The Landing
(former Pleasure Island). Waterside Park is finished and The Hanger
(bar) will be open in time for Christmas, as will be the Marketplace
Causeway. A third Starbucks will be built in Town Center (yes !!!).
Raglan Road will also have a second presence in Town Center. So, with
many of the walls down, the place is worth visiting again !!

Plans for the transition of DHS have been approved and funded. The
green-space and wetlands have been converted so a big announcement is
imminent. In fact, by summer of 2015, several major announcements will
be made because there most of the approved expansions have to be
complete by 2020 and some of them will certainly take that long.

More later. I have to get some coffee !!

Yes, Residential Street and the Backlot Tour would be nice to see again. Those areas really made DHS feel like a movie studio. But I still don't think the BAH has a place there on any street. Now, if you want to expand the Animation Courtyard and make room for it there, that would be good, or maybe put it at the TTC (that place needs some better decor anyhow).

I'm actually OK with the BAH. I think it's kind of cool but it should
never have been the weenie visible from the park entrance. Just like the
AT-AT by Star Tours - it's great where it is but if it was in front of
Graumann's Theater? Not so much.

What you'll see, when drawings and site maps start to leak out early
next year, is that there is a good sized area reserved for a new backlot
and tour. It is in the design stage right now and should be part of the
second phase of the DHS expansion. Remember that a backlot tram can go
places ... under and over things ...

Well, you know how old ladies like to gossip ...

I have a feeling that Osborne Lights will return as soon as possible,
even if they have to hang them on RnRC !!! They are a huge draw.

Residential Street is a little further down the pike (ha ha) but that's
where the Lights were originally and will return one day.

Osborne Lights will also be on hiatus after this season (hint, hint).
Remember that the Streets of America is just a set - it can be moved or
rebuilt elsewhere. Wouldn't it be nice to see the return of Residential
Street and a real backlot tour ?
Debbi, I REALLY enjoyed the backlot tour that was when the park first
opened, especially the sound stages. I would really like to see the
behind the scenes and activities and processes of making movies. I
know it has changed a lot in the past 20-30 years with almost
everything being digital. I would like to see a museum of the old
equiptment and processes explained. Some of it is in "One Man's
Dream" which is very cool! I happened to be watching "Ernest Saves
Christmas" (don't ask!) yesterday and noticed at the end that it was
filed at Disney's MGM Studios and on location in Orlando. Hope
something like this comes back.

The Africa Marketplace should open next March. The River of Light (is it
still called that ?) is on schedule for next summer too. There is also
lots of activity behind Kali (hint, hint).
There is a lot of space behind Kali and AK needs a few more classic
attractions to bring the teens back.

All these hints but I don't know what they mean.

Two big changes in planning, that have happened over the last several
years are 1) the realization that 'retro' is good, and 2) appointments
to creative leadership positions at DHS and Epcot (because of how well
this works at AK and MK).

Phase one for DHS should be announced next month and primarily focuses
on expanding the studio's universe (and footprint), which is long
overdue. This might be seen as the jewel-in-the-crown for WDW's 50th
birthday. Phase two and three have yet to be finalized but will include
(in no particular order) a return to the original concept that D'MGM was
founded on (backlot, animated and live film production, etc), Marvel
properties, and a few surprises.

So I think you will get your wish, in the long run.

I did have some fried tofu once - cut into little strips and fried,
served with beef and shrimp, and I managed to get through it without
knowing that it was tofu. In Shanghai, tofu is on the menu as both a
side dish and add-on but so far they haven't embraced it as a substitute.

I actually like tofu - but I like it as "tofu" - not as a substitute for

it's god something to do with Cars.

Well, I think it's safe to say that Pixar in general, deserves a much
bigger presence in Florida, not to mention a few other properties that
we have acquired over the last several years. Can you tell that I am
just bubbling over with anticipation here ??

Yes, your excitement definitely shows. I would say that you really have a
dream job, except for one thing - I know how long it takes to build this stuff
and I don;t think I could handle the anticipation. I would want it done "now"!

Yes, I have the same problem although it's not generally how long it
takes to build it that gets to me, it's how long it takes to get through
design - many very boring meetings that rehash the same issues that have
been rehashed on just about every project since day 1. During the build
phase I can walk the site and see progress every day - that keeps the
anticipation from driving me crazy.

So by now you have seen pictures of the progress at DLS. We finished all
the flood control systems, electrical distribution, both subway
stations, the utilidors, and 18 building foundations for the park. There
is not really going to be a Main Street but there are buildings near the
entrance that have offices in them - those buildings are complete and we
moved into those offices (from the barrack-style buildings we were in
early on).

Roads and markers are all in place for the resorts (room for 5 right
now) and the downtown district and ground was broken for the Toy Story
and Disneyland hotels. When you put all of this together it accounts for
usage on approx 1/3 of the designated lands. Shanghai is busy expanding
S1 and many other surrounding roads.

One great thing about DLS (for me anyway) is that we have access to just
about every kind of pyrotechnic device known to man - and directly from
the manufacturer (which is approx 50km from the park). We have regular
launch points all around the property, just like you might see during
the fireworks for MNSSHP or MVMCP at WDW.

So now I see this and I know you are still Shanghai-ing it. I have a
question; do you have an apartment to live in? I would go nuts in a
hotel room for as long as you have been there.

I did see the information about the resort hotels etc. Looking forward
to more info

Lisa - I'm on the 'Shanghai' hook until at least 5/2016 :)

We (WDI) all have apartments in Shanghai and sleeping quarters
(barracks) on property. WDI also has blocks of rooms at several hotels
(generally for meetings and hosting visitors). So we are well cared for.

On the other hand, we don't get many American TV channels over here so
no Walking Dead for me. Plenty of Gilligan's Island re-runs though !!

So most the Boom family is gathering for the big feast. We'll need to
take over most of Epcot just to hold us all !!
The traditional turkey/stuffing/sweet potatoes were great, as were all
the Bomafied items. The butternut squash soup was a hit at our table.
Post by Debbi
We did run into Robert, who claimed to be the imperial ruler of RADP, at
Epcot on Friday and thus had to give him a tour of the Earth globe
barge. Our new holiday tag for Illuminations is quite pretty and should
be seen from Showcase Plaza for the full effect.
Dang it! We were there from 11-7:30, but moved to MK for their evening
parade instead of sitting on the chilly pavement, so we didn't catch
Illumination this trip. So now everyone knows I'm not Robert.

Osborne Lights will also be on hiatus after this season (hint, hint).
We heard that rumor, and saw it one last time. I liked the hidden Mickey
lights, especially the super-stealthy one under an awning that you had
to see as a reflection.

We didn't get to take a boat from the IG to DHS because the water levels
were too high for safe bridge passage. I hadn't heard of that happening
before, but after 5-6 inches of rain on Tuesday, I guess anything's
possible.

I haven't tried the soup yet. With your positive review, I will have to
take the plunge. Generally I am not a fan of squash, even the word makes
me think of something the chef stepped on.

It happens from time to time. Crescent Lake drains naturally so it can
take a while when at flood level. Eventually we'll add an automated gate
and expand the canal over to CBR.

I tried it right after the gumbo, so my taste buds may have been biased.
It was a sweet creamy soup, with squash flavor, and my wife noticed lots
of spices (she's low-heat tolerance). Our server mentioned what days
it's usually on the menu (I didn't realize it rotated daily) and that it
was always available next door, if you wanted it but didn't see it. I
don't know if "next door" was the kitchen or the food court.

With everything so flat down there, draining must take a while. Or are
all the waterways designed to be held up a few feet above watertable, so
you can drain down as needed? The Sassagoula looked about a foot high
also, from our POFQ room, but we didn't ask if the boats were running to
Downtown. We saw a few coming from Riverside.

Most of our property drains naturally and yes, the water table (aquifer)
is relatively high so with heavy rains, lake drainage can be an issue.
The parks and resorts are all protected by a series of locks and
drainage canals so while the river(s) may rise a bit, the resorts and
parks should never be flooded. This can be a pain for the boats but it
is all fine-tuned and can't really be modified without long term
consequences.

be seen from Showcase Plaza for the full effect.
COOL BEANS! thanks for all the tantalizing updates!

Sounds like a win-win to me. I know some don't care for Turner's "changes" to
the classics (like colorization) but that doesn't bother me so much. It's not
like they totally destroyed the originals, they just made and enhanced copy
that can help expose classics to people who might not otherwise watch them due
to a lack of color.
Post by Steve Russo
According to TCM executives, the agreement began with an administrative
assistant, Amanda Tymeson, who returned from a visit to Disney World and
suggested “that TCM and Disney would be great partners” in revamping the
Great Movie Ride, Ms. Dorian said. Ms. Tymeson has since been promoted.
Good fer her!
