Sad to see him go. I know I'm in the minority, but I always found him funnier than his brother Dick.

Maybe not in the minority. Dick's comedy may have been on a more "urbane" level, but
Jerry always got more laughs from me.

May he RIP.

Jerry Van Dyke, comedian and actor, dead at age 86

By Kathleen Joyce | Fox News

Jerry Van Dyke, comedian, actor and younger brother of Dick Van Dyke, died Friday afternoon at his Arkansas home at the age of 86.

Van Dyke’s wife, Shirley, confirmed her husband’s death to TMZ. Shirley said her husband’s health began deteriorating after they were both involved in a car accident two years earlier.

TMZ reported Dick Van Dyke visited his brother at his home during the holidays.

Jerry Van Dyke was a well-known comedian who performed at various military bases and appeared on television programs. The comedian made his debut on his brother’s hit show, “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and also appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Judy Garland Show.”

Van Dyke was also known for his role on “Coach” where he played Assistant Coach Luther Van Dam. The role garnered him four Emmy nominations. His latest television appearance was on ABC’s hit show “The Middle" in 2015.

Entertainment Weekly, reporting on Van Dyke's death, recalled a 2015 interview he did with The Los Angeles Times, in which he said of his brother Dick, “I looked up to him as a kid.”

The star of "Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" returned the compliment, EW said. “In the service, you can steal other people’s material,” Dick said. “I didn’t realize how good he was. The main thing about Jerry is that he’s funny from the inside out.”

And you would think from his experience in solving crimes from Diagnosis Murder that he would be trying to solve these cases.

There was no TV genre I hated more than the "Familiar TV faces who come back to TV when they are really, really, horribly old in new series where they solve murders" genre. I think it may have started with Barnaby Jones and hopefully Diagnosis Murder is the end of the genre.

Others in the genre?

Matlock comes to mind (*).

(*) And don't get me started about the inaccuracy of having defense lawyers
be crime-solvers.

The worst of them was Murder, She Wrote. Why would you want that woman coming to your town because you know somebody would immediately be murdered, and she would make the local police look like idiots.

They resurrected Columbo and Perry Mason in the 80's and 90's. Some shows like the Cosby Mysteries fortunately failed.

I had thought of MSW, but, the funny thing is, I'd never seen AL in
anything else before MSW, so, for me, her being in MSW was her element. I
didn't see her as having been a star earlier and this being a return (as
like the others in our list). I realize, of course, that this isn't the
case, but it was my perception at the time.

Yes. And I almost, vaguly, almost remember The Cosby Mysteries.

Oh, and another note about MSW: I always thought, man that Cabot Cove was
a dangerous place to live. Population of about 3000, but they seemed to
have a grisly murder there every week.

I highly recommend a film from the early 60's called "The Manchurian Candidate"; don't watch the remake with Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep as it was a piece of garbage. It was one of the great psychological thrillers of all time with heavy political overtones and was set in the middle of a fictional McCarthy era about a VP candidate who is supposed to be McCarthy and...I don't want to say any more. You'll never look at Angela Lansbury the same way again. They play it on cable and TCM all the time, and you can probably find it on Netflix:

Yes - good movie - seen it.

The weirdest part about that movie, though, is the opening scene, which
seems to have nothing to do with anything else. It's available on YouTube.
(About 7 minutes long, IIRC)

Maybe so. Been a while since I've seen the entire movie.

I enjoyed Jack Klugman in "Quincy, M.E.". He won four Primetime Emmys for that series, which actually lasted longer than his previous "Odd Couple".

At least Quincy as a Medical Examiner was supposed to determine a cause of death, which more or less led him to the murderer.

This was always a favorite spoof of Quincy from SCTV:

Diagnosis Murder began from a pilot that was a Matlock episode... you
might say it was a "spin-off".

Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy Sorrell in the Dick van Dyke Show...
died in 1996 at the age of 87. Not all of Dick van Dyke's costars died
recently. Julie Andrews, who starred with Dick van Dyke in Mary
Poppins... Julie is still living!!!
