Home At Last - Little Willie John

Not bad 1955 Willie John flip but one which takes a back seat for me
to its much better "A" side "Need Your Love So Bad" which of course
WAS in that years Battle. Didn't affect Willie on bit though---since
BOTH sides charted Top 10 on Billboard's R&B chart

Because I Love You - Dee Clark

Bouncy but trite poppy number that again was the flip to ta much
better "A" side---in this case "Your Friends" (that had the Dells in
tow on it). Released on Vee Jay the top side was erroneously included
in the 1961 Battle. It should have been in the 1960 edition (reviewed
in BB in December 1960). Sorry Dee!

Blues For My Cookie - Lightnin' Hopkins
=20
Pretty straightforward but undistinguished blues by Hopkins recorded
at ACA Studio in Houston Tx in April 1954. Personnel : Lightnin'
Hopkins (vcl/gtr) Donald Cooks (b) Ben Turner (dms).Released by Herald
Records in NYC in October 1955

Baby, Don't Put Me Down - Sultans

Here's the five-member Sultans from Omaha,Nebraska with their second
record for Don Robey's Duke label in 1954. This was actually the
flipside to the slow ballad "I Cried My Heart Out" which featured
regular lead Willie Barnes. I prefer the rockin' side nominated here
in which lead duties are passed to one Eugene McDaniels who later
became a big hit maker in his own right---as Gene McDaniels---starting
with his "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay" smash in 1961

Be Ever Wonderful - Nolan Strong With The Velvet Angels

Sorry but tho I usually love Nolan Strong (not least because he has
been good to me in these contests :) I'm not much of an acapella fan
I'm afraid. This rather colorless 1963 effort does little if anything
for me. I'll guess I'll stick with Ted Taylor's brighter 1959
original.

For gods sake, "Home At Last - Little Willie John" is very ordinary in
comparison.

Yes, I'm knocking my head against a brick wall of perverse and
calculated tastes - nevertheless, I will persist, on behalf of the
majority of independent minded whites who enjoy classic r&b :-)

FINAL RANKINGS - Same as me, Roger and Jim.

1. Home At Last - Little Willie John - 37 (5-4)
2. Baby, Don't Put Me Down - Sultans - 37
3. Blues For My Cookie - Lightnin’ Hopkins - 23

4. Because I Love You - Dee Clark - 22
5. Be Ever Wonderful - Nolan Strong With The Velvet Angels - 16

My LWJ edges Rick's Sultans in a 5-4 tie breaker. An unexpected surprise for me because I did not expect Rick to put my record second, but he did. Carl's Hopkins takes third to advance to the next round. Mark's Dee Clark with just 22 points will be out, and Bill's "Nolan Strong" and the Velvet Angels is out, making Mr. Bugge a perfect 3 for 3 so far this month.

I think what killed it--for me, at least--is that it was so obviously a
rehearsal tape. One of the guys actually starts talking towards the
end, or maybe it was someone who came into the room. Too rough and
rocky even for me.

I like a few things on that album, but not this one. The best is their version of the Clyde McPhatter hit "Since You've Been Gone."
