Enable Replication Disable Referral

Hi

We are introducing a backup server to our network to replicate to, the
server is to act as a failover rather than for load balancing.

We have configured replication but have disabled referrals, which appears to
have disabled replication.

How can I disable referrals without disabling replication?

Thanks

Disabling a referral should not affect replication in any way. Which
operating system and snap-in/tool did you use to do this?

Hi Jill

I'm not sure how exact you want, but here is everything:

On our DC: SBS 2k3: Start > Administrative Tools > Distributed File System

Expand \\domain.local\RootOnDC

Select Link, select / right click target

Enable or Disable Referral

Under DFS Referral it now says disabled, file replication says enabled.

It has created the file structure on the other server but nothing else, I
must add that the other server is not a DC and does not have DNS server
enabled, the root server is a DC and has DNS enabled.

Thanks

I just want to make sure I understand the sequence of events that caused FRS
to stop working. Here is what I'm assuming you did at some point prior:

Created a link with two targets and configured FRS.
Confirmed FRS was working (i.e., replicating) as scheduled.
Followed the procedure you mention below to disable a referral to one of the
targets.

Is my understanding correct? I was just making sure that you didn't actually
remove a link target or anything like that. The UI does not disable FRS when
a referral is disabled, so I wonder if something else has happened that
caused FRS to stop working. Have you checked the FRS event logs on both
targets? How about trying Sonar or FRSDiag from www.microsoft.com/frs to
check replication health?

Hi

I think stupidity got the best of me :-)

The folders not replicating are our SQL Server Backup Dump folders, the
default filter was blocking them.

Filter removed and we replicating.

Thank you for all your help

Regards
