If big tech-center cities keep getting more expensive and less
livable, technology will disperse within the USA, or move to more
friendly countries that don't tolerate tent cities or destructive
riots, and have lower taxes. Both are happening now.

A lot of giant tech companies are moving out of San Francisco now too.

Nevada sure wants my company.

The Freakonomics guys argue that high tech thrives in big cities with good universities and good access to high-tech consultants and high-tech service companies - the sort of service the John Larkin seems to think he offers.

Sustaining that kind of population density comes at a cost, and John seems to be more sensitive to the costs than he is to the advantages.
A lot of giant tech companies are moving out of San Francisco now too.
They may be figuring that Zoom works well enough to replace face-to-face meetings, or they may just be companies that have got infested by masters of business administration who have lost sight of how the company originally got big. One of the more famous expressions of that is that railways went under because the people who ran them though that they were running a railway company, when they were actually running a transportation service.
Nevada sure wants my company.
Make them happy. Your employees may not want to move to Nevada, and your customers may not want to bother to go to Nevada to tell you what new circuits you could sell them, but think of the money you will save as your business dwindles.

Hey SL0WMAN, your comments show just how OUT OF TOUCH you are.

First off, the rail business is a VERY GOOD business to be in - just ask Warren Buffett. The reason is pretty simple: they have the lowest cost of moving freight. The passenger business, on the other hand, SUCKS! The reason is the revenue generated by passenger traffic is abysmal, but it consumes precious track bandwidth. Freight rail traffic has priority over passenger trains in the US. Australia even has robotic trains.

John would be wise to move to Nevada from a financial perspective, especially Las Vegas which has excellent airline connections. The need for customers to visit your facility is dropping fast with modern telecommunications. Who the hell wants to spend several days and thousands of dollars to visit a vendor when a Zoom meeting will accomplish the same thing during lunch? Oh, that, of course, would be YOU!

The rail business now has been purged of the executives who thought that what made money in 1900 was still going to make money when cars and trucks had become more affordable.

Or anybody else who appreciates how much extra information can be acquired by seeing how stuff is actually made, and by handling actual devices, and parts of devices.

Having to pay airfares to do it is a bit off-putting.

There's more to face-to-face meetings than listening to other people talking, but since Flyguy won't listen to anything he can't understand, and he can't understand much to start with, he's not going to know what he might be missing. If you haven't got anything to communicate, life gets really simple - though it isn't all that productive.

The comparison is unkind to the female anatomy. As one French Academician once said, the geriatric Republicans are neither as beautiful nor as useful as the area in question, but few would understand the comment to be actively misogynist. "Worthless old malicious idiots" would have been more ideologically correct, but takes more words to convey the meaning that was clearly intended, and John Doe hasn't got much of an attention span..

It's more that John Doe makes a lot of mistakes, and it's worth pointing out every last one of them. He obviously an idiot. but everybody makes occasional mistakes, so it's worth pointing out that he never gets anything right. He can manage far-right. but correct is quite beyond him

No idea. The statistics suggest in ten to fifteen years - my father died at 82, but he'd smoked like a chimney when young, while my mother made it to 95 despite letting her BMI drop to 17 after my father died.

YOU FAILED TO ANSWER THE QUESTION...
I came as close as I could. The only time anyone could reliably answer that question would be after they'd died, when they wouldn't be around to answer it.

John Doe might think about testing this experimentally. There are some situations where people can make more reliable short term predictions, but I'm not in any of them. John Doe does seem to suffer from terminal stupidity, but being stupid does mean that he wouldn't recognise the stupidity that would kill him before he was irrevocably committed to it. If he had himself certified as mentally incompetent, he might be able to get the kind of supervision that could keep him alive for longer.

Vegas is gross. It would be the east shore of Lake Tahoe, a convenient
drive to the Reno airport.

Customers seldom visit us anyhow.

So he doesn't have to spend as much on keeping the bathrooms clean. Fewer visitors ought to mean fewer customers, but John Larkin's sales spiel might not look quite as inadequate on a screen.

WHEN will Seattle residents WAKE UP to what is going on AND TAKE ACTION?
The residents voted for the present Socialist System of Seattle
unfortunately.

I'm not sure how the majority of residents feel about the present
situation but in my and everybody I know, it is awful.

I grew up around the Seattle area and see how bad it is now. I am so
glad that I can usually not have to drive through Seattle. It used
to be a beautiful city and some parts are still wonderful if you can
find a place to park and not get bothered by people.

Business are definitely moving out of town or contemplating. Amazon
is moving at least partly to Bellevue, on the east side of Lake
Washington.

I'm glad I grew up when I did and won't have to deal with the
political future of the world after another 20 or 30 years.

said. “You don’t drive your Ferrari to work every day, you only drive it
on Sundays. This is our high end, we want to make sure we don’t use it

The comparison to the best Italian engineering money can by isn't
encouraging. You use solid designs _more_ often! Not less often!

She was a lousy pick with a lot of problems. Whatever, I didn't pick the
woman and thought there was a good chance it would sink the Biden
campaign. Despite various baseless claims to the contrary it didn't seem
to which IMO is only a commentary on how little the average American
tends to care about hypocrisy in practice, but we knew that already.

I'll buy that when defense spending goes down instead of up
consistently; over the past 20 years defense spending has only seemed to
increase.

America will have to wait a little longer to be ruled with an iron fist
and robbed blind by whatever goose-stepping thug the MAGAmillions choose
to bend the knee to, I'm afraid.

Unintelligible gibberish...
The Make America Great Again millions still seem to be relying on Donald Trump to restore America to whatever greatness it might once have had.

Trump is a bit too old and fat to manage goose-stepping. He can manage the goose-squawking. "The Apprentice" made him recognisable and invested him with a reputation for competence which he had never earned, and some of the electorate still saw him as competent after four years of impotent posturing. John Doe may be one of them

Quite how simple minded the gibberish has to be to make it "intelligible" for John Doe is an interesting question . He may think he understands what he posts, but it is reliably devoid of intelligence.

The fact that John Doe can't make any sense of what Bitrex wrote isn't a particularly devastating criticism.

Anything that John Doe can make sense of has been over-simplified to the point of idiocy.

Flyguy started off this thread with the kind of inane claim that makes sense to people like him, John Doe and you. If you had more sense this might ell you something unflattering, but your demand to feel flattered gets in the way of that particular message.

WHEN will Seattle residents WAKE UP to what is going on AND TAKE ACTION?
The residents voted for the present Socialist System of Seattle unfortunately.
It probably isn't nearly socialist enough. After a century of anti-socialist propaganda - mostly designed to confuse socialism with communism - Americans are deeply suspicious of anything that leads them to pay out more in taxes. Since the same people who have been persistently lying about what is involved in implement socilaist policies seem to have made it their business to ensure that any faintly socialist initiative - like feeding and housing the very poor well enough that they don't become a reservoir of infectious diseases - is so badly managed and under-funded that it doesn't do anything useful, it has been a pretty effective campaign.

Anybody who knows enough about the rest of the world to point out that even half-hearted socialism - as practised in the UK - considerably improves the lot of the poor, while a slightly more generously funded system - as in Scandinavia and Germany gives you are substantially healthier, better-educated and more productive work force which has an appreciably higher expectation of life.

It cost you money in taxes, which you'd prefer not to pay, and doesn't produce benefits that you notice. The US has a much higher level of income inequality than ther advanced industrial countries, and this is associated with worse social problems.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_Level_(book)

is worth reading. Our resident right-wing idiots don't like it. It was written by a pair of medical epidemiologists, and compares advanced industrial countries, and the individual states in the US on the basis of income inequality. The correlations between state by state statistics and country by country statistics are much the same - there's less difference in income inequality between the various US states than their is between advanced industrial countries, but the correlation coefficients are much the same.

If you grown up somewhere less addicted to indoctrinating you with reactionary opinions and irrational anxieties, you might be more cheerful and healthier.

Americans do have an obesity problem, and part of that problem is the fast food industry, which wants everybody to eat as much as possible, and is somewhat unscrupulous about encouraging customers to eat more of their product at any one time than they really should. More socialist governments that have to pay for the universal health care that ends up dealing with the consequent problems tend to regulate their free markets a little more carefully.

The markets are still free, but some forms of cheating do get restrained.

If citizens get tired of the chaos, they will vote for more rational
politicians and things will get better.

But if they move out, there will be a positive-feedback loop to make
things worse, and Seattle will run out of money.

I have friends who are moving from San Francisco to Tennessee, which I
think is extreme.

I moved to SF in 1979 and started two businesses; the current one is
over 30 years old. In those days, it was pretty much like any other
city, clean and affordable and actually fairly conservative. It's home
now, and here I am.

Fortunately, SF is "a collection of villages" and some are very nice.
I avoid the others.

Only the gullible twits.
Think of all the crazy fads in fashion and music and architecture. Even food; people don't know what tastes good until they hear what other people like.
If they've never eaten it before, they can't know what it tastes like.
It's depressing to think that's how folks are so easily manipulated by those who know how to press their buttons. :-(
And John Larkin and Cursitor Doom are clear more easily manipulated than most.

This isn't the link John Larkin posted, though it takes you to the same place, and lets you see where it is taking you.
The crowds that get deluded consist mainly of people like John Larkin and Cursitor Doom. The rest of the population has rather more common sense - not enough to stop getting Donald Trump elected in 2016, but enough to get him slung out in 2020.

Hey SL0WMAN, your ranting on this thread has gone on far more than the usual drivel you drip from your foul mouth. You seem to be following Lyin' Biden's cognitive decline, maybe a year or two later. Not surprising from a dunce that can't spell STUPD.

Flyguy has loads of delusions. He's gullible enough to believe Trump's election propaganda about Joe Biden, and silly enough to think that the same kind of nonsense is worth peddling about me.
Not surprising from a dunce that can't spell STUPD.
He is much too silly to realise that typo's aren't evidence of any cognitive problem. They pop up in the process of transferring instructions from the brain to the extremities - but comprehending that requires the kind of insight that he can't manage.

Hey SL0WMAN, you are FUCKING HILLARIOUS!!! Trump didn't have to say one negative word about Lyin' Biden - he did it ALL ON HIS OWN!!!! For example, Lyin' Biden once introduced his granddaughter (a female, you know, who was standing RIGHT NEXT TO HIM) as his DEAD SON BEAU!!!!! Lyin' Biden couldn't:
1. Tell the difference between a male and a female.
2. Forgot that his son had died YEARS AGO.
This is a not a "slip of the tongue" - this is the definition of DEMENTIA, you fool.

Wrong. That is exactly how errors of action work, and Biden has been famous for making them throughout his political career.

Try to persuade people that the recent instances are evidence of a progressive decline is the sort of thing that lying idiots like Trump and Flyguy go in for.

Why bother? What you probably mean is that Dr. David Scheiner has said that Joe Biden has some of the sorts of minor health issues that show up in 78-year-olds (including one that I share) , and somebody like Fox News has decided that that means that they can claim all sorts of other nonsense. Even you have more sense than to post a link to it.

Hey SL0WMAN, then you ADMIT that Lyin' Biden DID introduce his GRANDDAUGHTER as his LONG DEAD SON BEAU. This is CLASSIC early onset dementia AND later stage dementia. This is you being just as deluded as ever. Errors of action aren't any kind of evidence of any kind of dementia. Introducing your off-spring (or off-spring of your off-spring) is one of those well-rehearsed and frequently repeated situations that you do pretty much on autopilot. If the mechanism picks up the wrong script, that's what comes out. My wife spent a few years working on the subject and I'm a good deal better informed than you are on the subject - not that you seem to be all that well-informed on any subject.

Biden has been more prone to this kind of error than most people all through his political career. Claiming that a recent incidence of it is evidence of some kind of progressive decline is perfectly stupid - as I have pointed out before, and you have been much too stupid to have taken on board. It probably won't register with you now - you do have habit of making mistakes and sticking with the original mistake long after you have been shown up, as idiots do.

You're wasting your time. Bill Sloman is a psychopath who will
*always* have the last word on anything. In his mind this is dominance
over his opponent - even if he's posting complete rubbish he will
always get the last word in because in his mindset, that alone makes
him the 'winner' in any debate. And he *does* post an awful lot of
complete rubbish. You cannot reason with him and no amount of evidence
you cite will settle an argument with the likes of Bill!

That's not exactly psychopathic, particularly when dealing with the kind of nonsense you and Flyguy persist in posting.

Cursitor Doom does seem to have the problem he is describing - and he does post complete rubbish more or less non-stop.

Cursitor Doom doesn't seem to realise that he posts a great deal of complete rubbish - if he's read something in the Daily Mail, Russia Today or Zero Hedge that presses his buttons he will swallow it whole, no matter how implausible.

You cannot reason with him and no amount of evidence you cite will settle an argument with the likes of Bill!
Cursitor Doom can't reason with anybody, and his idea of what constitutes evidence is driven by his compulsion to believe any right-wing rubbish that fits his demented preconceptions.

He resents being shown up as a gullible half-wit, and seems to imagine that retreating in a sulk is a way he can win an argument.

If you're referring to the trip-ups on the aircraft stairway, then my
guess (and it is only a guess) would be a condition called 'drop-foot'
which is symptomatic of a serious neurological condition requiring
further investigation by the relevant specialist. If I'm right, you'll
see him start to trip up whilst walking on level surfaces as well (or
rather you won't see it because Fake News channels like CNN will cover
it up).
Anyway, he's not going to last the full term and that black woman
whose name escapes me will step into his position before his 4 years
are up. Perhaps that's been pre-planned all along....

Flyguy doesn't understand how speech errors work, or what they mean. Joe Biden has been making this kind of bizarre speech error all through his political career, so it wouldn't be any kind of evidence for any kind of decline. Most people make them- from time to time. There are certain kinds of speech error that do provide early evidence of progressive dementia, and Brian Butterworth found them in Reagan's speech when he was running for his second term.

Flyguy hasn't got nearly enough sense to make the distinction. It's pretty subtle, and Flyguy is blind to any kind of subtlety.

He hadn't made the arrangements with the testers that Trump clearly had - nobody gets a "perfect score" on any useful test if they don't write the results themselves, which Trump is notoriously prone to doing.
Your own reference talks about detecting slight changes in language to detect early onset Alzheimer's. Joe Biden isn't making small errors - he is making HUGE errors.
If the response generating mechanism starts off the wrong script - and this can happen whenever you are giving out information that you have given out frequently before - you can get bizarre results. Sadly for the result you desperately want to see, these errors aren't cognitive.

My reference talks about detecting specific small changes in language, and you clearly haven't got any idea what that means.
Just look at the guy on TV - he is pasty white. He looks like death warmed over except I have seen dead people that look more alive than Joe Biden.
US analog TV still uses NTSC - never the same colour twice. When you move over to a TV set that can pick up digital TV transmissions (as we would have had to do a few years ago, if we hadn't bought a new TV when we moved to Australia) Joe Biden's skin colour may look more normal - it certainly does on the images we see.

US TV skin tones are famously odd. PAL worked a whole lot better - phase alternating lines lets you cancel out the worst drifts.
“And I want to thank the sec — the, the, ah former general. I keep calling him general, but my, my — the guy who runs that outfit over there,” Biden said.

That is what you desperately want to think, and nothing in the real world is going to change that preference. People a lot younger than Joe Biden know about the "tip of the tongue" phenomena, and while it happens more often as you get older, there's no link to senile dementia.

Oh, there's still analog TV; reruns, for instance. The BROADCAST standard is digital, not all the sources.
Complexion on a video screen, however, has more dependence on makeup than on
any personal health issues; everyone is accustomed to actors and presenters with
good professional makeup.

The US is a big country. A corner that somebody as stupid as Flyguy finds congenial might still broadcast NTSC for people unwilling to buy a new TV.

The IQ in question here is Flyguy's. Nobody in their right mind is going to go from skin colour in a TV image to speculations about the health of person imaged.

I was merely being satirical about the ways in which he could get it wrong. As has been pointed here, what you see is what the make-up artists have painted on. If Flyguy sees Joe Biden as pasty white, he's probably managed to mess up the colour balance in his TV receiver. The reference to NTSC just gives an historical example of how that used to happen. Imaging that Flyguy lives in some primitive corner of the US that has bowed to pressure from people like Flyguy to let them keep on using their analog TV sets was perhaps extravagant - more lampoon than satire - and obviously more extravagant than you can get your feeble wits around.

And here is an honest assessment of Lyin' Biden's mental decline from Sky News in AUSTRALIA, dude:

If you're referring to the trip-ups on the aircraft stairway, then my guess (and it is only a guess) would be a condition called 'drop-foot' which is symptomatic of a serious neurological condition requiring further investigation by the relevant specialist.
None of the other presidents that have done it over the years has turned out to have any kind of interesting neurological condition, so it is unlikely to be a good guess.
Post by Cursitor Doom
If I'm right, you'll see him start to trip up whilst walking on level surfaces as well (or rather you won't see it because Fake News channels like CNN will cover it up).
Cursitor Doom being confuses being far-right - his normal condition - with getting things right, which he can't manage.
Post by Cursitor Doom
Anyway, he's not going to last the full term and that black woman whose name escapes me will step into his position before his 4 years are up.
Another right-wing fantasy, which has shown up here before.
Post by Cursitor Doom
Perhaps that's been pre-planned all along....
Probably not. But we can wait. Cursitor Doom advances the idea now because he's too stupid to realise quite how improbable it is.
You dismiss EVERY clear example of Lyin' Biden's cognitive decline such as introducing his granddaughter (a female) as his DEAD SON BEAU (a long dead male) - WHO, that is mentally competent, could have forgotten the death of a child? The libtard press that spent hours analyzing Trump's gingerly walk down a wet, slippery ramp ignored Lyin' Biden's tripping disaster.
It's pretty subtle, and Flyguy is blind to any kind of subtlety.
https://academic.oup.com/brain/article/128/4/E27/284335?login=true
Joe Biden does seem to be communicating really well - at least most of the time - so we can put that one to bed.
This ISN'T a "speech error" - it IS cognitive decline. Trump took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and got a perfect score - Joe Biden REFUSED to take it and he and the libtard media demeaned it. Truth is Biden was afraid of taking it.
He hadn't made the arrangements with the testers that Trump clearly had - nobody gets a "perfect score" on any useful test if they don't write the results themselves, which Trump is notoriously prone to doing.
Joe Biden specifically REFUSED to take the test and YES, Trump DID get a perfect score of 30 as administered by the White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson.
The doctor who let Trump write his own health reports, then signed them for him? Joe Biden has clearly got enough sense to steer clear of rigged contests.
You are employing a typical libtard tactic: when you feel you are losing an argument you LIE.
Since Trump's well-known lying habits are the issue here your own tactic is either moronic or deceitful. Moronic seems more likely to be accurate.
Post by Bill Sloman
Your own reference talks about detecting slight changes in language to detect early onset Alzheimer's. Joe Biden isn't making small errors - he is making HUGE errors.
If the response generating mechanism starts off the wrong script - and this can happen whenever you are giving out information that you have given out frequently before - you can get bizarre results. Sadly for the result you desperately want to see, these errors aren't cognitive.
I repeat: NOBODY in their RIGHT MIND forgets about the DEATH OF A CHILD, repeat NOBODY. What is "bizarre" is the extent of Lyin' Biden's cognitive decline in such a short time period.
You can emphasis how little you understand about subject as much as you like. It just makes you look even more stupid.
Post by Bill Sloman
My reference talks about detecting specific small changes in language, and you clearly haven't got any idea what that means.
I know PERFECTLY what it means.
Sure. Your self-confidence is perfect. Your comprehension is rather less than perfect, but you are much too stupid to realise it.
Post by Bill Sloman
Just look at the guy on TV - he is pasty white. He looks like death warmed over except I have seen dead people that look more alive than Joe Biden.
US analog TV still uses NTSC - never the same colour twice. When you move over to a TV set that can pick up digital TV transmissions (as we would have had to do a few years ago, if we hadn't bought a new TV when we moved to Australia) Joe Biden's skin colour may look more normal - it certainly does on the images we see.
MY GOD, SL0WMAN, are you SERIOUS??? The US hasn't had analog TV for MANY YEARS! Perhaps YOU should take a cognitive assessment.
Not all that serious, but a lame brain like you is perfectly capable of screwing up the colour balance in his TV without realising what he has done.

<snipped more election propaganda - that election is over, and Trump lost, but Flyguy is stuck in his time-warp>
Post by Bill Sloman
Joe Biden is losing it and LOSERS LIKE YOU are letting him get away with it.
That is what you desperately want to think, and nothing in the real world is going to change that preference. People a lot younger than Joe Biden know about the "tip of the tongue" phenomena, and while it happens more often as you get older, there's no link to senile dementia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip_of_the_tongue
No, you LOSERS are "desperately" wanting to think that Joe Biden will make it thru the next 4 years w/o totally collapsing.
And the idiots who support Trump - who lost the election - are comforting themselves with the lying election propaganda from the election Trump lost.

<snip>
Sky News is famously right-wing. Their "honesty" isn't exactly a by-word. Their idiocy is famous.

<snipped stuff I'd only have seen on the Australian "Media Watch" program, which does air that kind of rubbish from time to time as horrible examples of partisan idiocy>

Our brain-dead trolls worry about what people look like. It make sense - they've got no way of working out how well they think.

Not agreeing with Flyguy or John Doe isn't absolute evidence that you have a working brain, but if you agree with them it is pretty likely that you don't. Cursitor Doom comes to mind.

Debt and taxes are just on issue. I see people leaving cities because
the streets stink, their cars and houses get burgled, and they want
safe places and good schools for their kids.
But clearly they aren't paying out enough in taxes to buy good street cleaning, enough law enforcement or good schools.
None of these things can be delivered unless somebody pays for them.

Encouraging people to get upset about the Sandy Hook school massacre is the kind of thing that the murderous right deplores.

The mouse plague was remarkably bad and had made it onto the evening new on TV. It's a long way inland from where I live, and seems to have been driven by he high rainfall that came with the current La Nina, which provided a lot of mouse fodder which let their population explode.

We've just had an extraordinary amount of rain in the last couple of days - once in fifty year downpours in lots of places, and once in a century in some - which has probably drowned most of the mice. The cure may well have been alot worse than the disease. Low-lying farms have been washed away, and we've had pictures of complete houses drifting down-river.

Washington.
If citizens get tired of the chaos, they will vote for more rational
politicians and things will get better.
Curious that the imagned "chaos" doesn't get reported in newspapers.
Post by j***@highlandsniptechnology.com
But if they move out, there will be a positive-feedback loop to make
things worse, and Seattle will run out of money.
But they aren't moving out, and Seattle doesn't seem to have run out of money.
Post by j***@highlandsniptechnology.com
I have friends who are moving from San Francisco to Tennessee, which I
think is extreme.
Some people like rural backwaters. I grew up in one, and don't fancy moving back.

I'm glad I grew up when I did and won't have to deal with the
political future of the world after another 20 or 30 years.
I'd rather still be alive and live with some annoyances.
Rational. John Larkin can still manage a rational reaction from time to time.

But things alternate. We may have a conservative reaction to the current nonsense.
While the Democratic successes in the 2020 elections were a liberal reaction to Trump's nonsense.
You can't call Trump a conservative - he didn't have any values at all.

Obvously you don't have an answer, else you wouldn't be hiding his

It just makes you look stupid and weak.

As if John Doe could. He's clearly performing at the top of his game, being the most complete idiot he can be.

His dedication might be admirable, but if he devoted it to a more useful cause - liking winning himself a Darwin award - the gene pool would probably be grateful.

What do I need to understand? It is tomorrow and John Doe is still top-posting. He is clearly the most complete idiot he can be, and his comprehension of "better" is idiosyncratic.

Is "bitrex" a combination of "bi" and "treks"?

That's why it posts twice every time?
