Two different brand laptops having fingerprint readers worked for a
while then both stopped. Both on Win XP Pro.

The remembered fingerprint data went away and the other the fingerprint
scanner window went away.

Have to log in by typing password now.

What might have been changed or deleted to do this ?

I use CCleaner and Glary cleaners so maybe one of them deleted something ???
I cannot think of anything else that might have done it.

Suggestions please to restore the fingerprint readers.

Have you tried System Restore to an earlier date?

That's not much to go on. The readers came
with the laptops? Personally I'd suggest you
get rid of those dubious cleaner programs. They
do no good and can do harm.

Beyond that, if the software came preinstalled then
you have two options:

1) Do a restore. I don't mean a system restore. I mean
a factory restore to the original state of the system.
Most computers these days have some kind of way,
like holding down F2, F8, Delete, or some such at boot,
to initialize a factory restore. The exact metho
should be in your manual. (If you do that, make
a disk image of it after it's done, so you don't have to
depend on the hidden restore copy.)

2) Visit the website for the laptop maker. In most cases
they provide downloads for utilities, drivers, etc that
go with the product. It's possible that you can get the
fingerprint reader installer.

Then of course there's the possibility that the hardware
is the problem. In that case there's probably not much
option but to buy an external one, or go back to your
bosses at MI5 and tell them you want to upgrade
to an iris scanner. :)

The fingerprint readers require drivers and ancilliary software that is
bundled in the OS image put on the laptop you got. You never bothered
to identify the brand and model of laptop. We don't know how you have
modified the OS or drivers since you got it. The common factor with the
fingerprint reader going "bad" on both laptops is you.

CCleaner and Glary don't tell us HOW you used those tools. If you used
their registry cleaners, did you review their proposed changes before
committing them? They only propose what they think might be dross. You
are still the admin and it is your responsibility to know if those
changes are valid or if some should be ignored. If you don't have that
expertise, NEVER USE A REGISTRY CLEANER! Such cleanup is rarely useful.

As Paul noted, do a System Restore before you the problem arose. That's
not always successful so use your image backups to restore the disk(s)
back to a prior state before the problem arose.
