Since it updated itself a couple of days ago, Thunderbird has developed
an odd quirk. I am in the habit of tapping the space bar to step
through all my e-mails and newsgroup posts, but now this doesn't always
work. I haven't been able to work out what the common factor is, but
SOMETIMES, the space bar doesn't move me on to the next message.

Any other TBrats noticed this?

I am on 60.3.2 (32-bit) and it says I am up to date and the space bar is
working as before here.

I'm on the same release as you but the space bar isn't working here. I
don't think it'll ever take me to the next message now, although it will
generally scroll me through my current message.

PS (I hit send rather too quickly) - I meant to add that, given that it
still works for some people, it sounds as if it may be an add-on which
is confusing it. I haven't done any experimenting to work out which one
it is though.

I'm using an ancient version of Agent and whenever I have a similar problem
it's because the plate I am eating from is resting on the space bar...

When I fall asleep at the keyboard my finger falls on the space bar and
zips through all the unread messages. It saves an awful lot of reading time.

I am using an ancient paid for (twice I think) copy of it too. B rants
a bit when things don't work and says it is a silly system but I like
it.

My up-to-date version on Linux is working fine but I believe I read
someone in another newsgroup was experiencing the same problem as you.
It probably will get picked up in a future release of TB but to make
sure, why not file a bug report?

In the meantime a quick and dirty - albeit two-fingered - solution might
be to place the cursor in the message pane then use the scroll keys to
scroll through the message and the <n> key to jump to the next unread one.

Just updated and space bar worked ok, but only 2 unread messages.

Will report again tomorrow if you lot posts a bit overnight...

I have noticed the same thing (sometimes the spacebar fails to shift to
the next unread post, and I have to hit "n" instead) but I rather
thought it started some time ago i.e. not just since the latest update.

I haven't discovered what the trigger is for this behaviour.

If it is a long message off the bottom of the screen then the space bar
the first time moves you down, and again etc until you move to the next
message.

I have exactly the same. For me it's definitely since the last update.
And I can't see any pattern to when it will or won't progress to the
next message.

I now use a two-finger technique[1], with the left hand on the space bar
and the right on the Down key t press when needed.

[1]Brritski will doubtless be along shortly.

That's odd. I have all-new TBird and I think it's all working ok for me.
I use spacebar to go to the next new message, and 'f' to go to the next
message whether read or not.

I had to remove and re-install the 'Manage Folders' add-on after the
update. I think I did this before reading umra (though not before
dealing with a lot of emails), so it's possible there was interference
which is now gone.
