Merry Chrismas!

A test version of jb-x86 based on
Android 4.2.1 (JellyBean-MR1)
is uploaded to the download page.
Note it's still on a very early stage.
Don't try it unless you are a developer
who wants to help the development.

Things work:
* OpenGL ES hardware acceleration (i915, radeon)
* Wifi
* Audio
* Touch
* Internal storage

Things NOT work:
* Bluetooth
* Auto-mount
* G-sensor, HAL, Backlight, ...
* Ethernet

Known issues:
* Only fb driver i915 and radeon are supported.
All others will see black screen.
* Unable to switch console

Source code will be available soon.

Its works on Dell Inspiron 1525.
But the mouse pointer is not visible.
It scrolls left and right instead of pointer.

Hello
I've just installed this on my Acer D255 netbook, and when you try to use any browser for longer than a minute, I get a black screen. Is that because of the OpenGL issues?

You say it works with radeon. It doesn't for me.

I have a mobility radeon hd 4250. JB never boots. It takes 20 minutes to
detect the system, then ends on a black screen.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the update and Merry Xmas!
I am trying to run the latest update (4.2) on my eeepc 701 from a live usb
stick using LiLi. It boots up fine but after a little while all I get is a
command line. Is this the intended behavior?

Many thanks

I was able to install this to my desktop pc without any issues, runs wicked
smooth: ASUS P8 H67-M LE series, intel i3-2100 3.10GHz CPU, 8GB
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL ! Boots fine, Grub works great with my windows 7 system,
no problems switching back and forth between console and android UI. netcfg
works for enabling ethernet, and connection eth0 properly registers
dedicated IP from my router, desktop has no wifi - so no internet or gapps
for me at the moment (unless someone has a work around?) but so far it
works great!

@Ken, sorry after re-reading my post - it is misleading - that's my fault -
sorry about that! what I meant was, I can press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get into the
console, and type netcfg to list my connection devices, eth0 is the
ethernet connection, so if I type, " netcfg eth0 up " - it enables the
ethernet device. I then specify: " netcfg eth0 dhcp " and finally " setprop
net.dns1 8.8.8.8 " it will activate the enthernet device, set it to a DHCP
connection type, pull the assigned IP address from the router, and the
connect to the internet. BUT it is useless - i've not been able to download
anything, setup accounts, access the apps store (google play store) etc...
BECAUSE the operating system is looking for either a WIFI connection or a
mobile data connection through the cellular network (as I have neither) im
out of luck! (unless someone has a work around for that? I would love to
have one!!!!) anyway i hope this clarifies things

I also installed the new JB release on my Eeepc T101MT.
First I copied the /data/ folder from 4.0-RC2 build to the new one but I
never passed the screen where the word Android is animated.
After that bad experience I cleared the content of folder /data/ and
rebooted. Android started but it is very very slow (mouse pointer, touch
screen, keyboard, ..., but not sound effects !).

Hi. I burned JB-4.2 on a disc to try without install and i was working with the system for a few minutes then it black screened. I enjoy working with this system and as i write this to all of you, i'm on 4.0.4 because the android system is alot easier to use at this point instead of windows 7. As soon as there are patches and bug fixes, can you let me know where to download them?

Thank you for your time.

Thanks.
I did a quick test with the live system yesterday.

What I noticed so far:
+ kernel version: 3.7.1 (that's brand new)
+ poweroff in the settings
- Google Now not there. I tried to install "Google Search" from the Play
store, but it said it is incompatible with my device.
- no multi user support.

Note: to enable Developer options in settings you have to tap the

well not to be snide but to those who pay attention it's been
available since sept. time frame as I recall

it was based on android-4.1.1_r1

however it simply obtained the AOSP sources from google....I had to
muck-up/combine manifests from ics-x86 to try and do
some work with it.........

Heym nerry Christmas to you too!

This build works perfectly on an Asus Eee PC 901, BUT it would be great to
have tslib installed (since the touchscreen is inverted).

Could't you just include tslib in all images?

1) Often the caps-lock LED begins flashing and it stops responding. If it
is left alone, it will reboot by itself.

The Android UI goes away and the screen goes blank when this happens. If
at the terminal (by pressing alt-left arrow) when it happens, the screen
does not go blank, but still it stops responding until eventually rebooting
by itself.

2) If the screen is not unlocked quickly after turning on, it goes to
sleep and will not wake up. If you press the power button, it tries to
wake up, but just goes back to sleep in a few seconds.

The Android UI never appears again after it goes to sleep. The power
source must be removed to resolve.

I get a bootloop with the Logo on my A110L :/ waiting for the EEEPC version
of this release to retest.

Acer Aspire One AOA-150
1) Often the caps-lock LED begins flashing and it stops responding. If
it is left alone, it will reboot by itself.
Thank you for moving forward with Jelly Bean!

After installing 4.0 generic on my native hard drive on my pc. It booted
fine, ran fine. I rebooted a few times,in which grub always showed up and I
had a choice of either android or windows. I rebooted once and instead of
showing grub or booting into anything, there's a blank black screen....
Help me. I don't want to have to reset my whole pc.

The easiest way to get grub back is to download ubuntu live cd, burn a cd
and boot from it.
Then, while on the live cd, download, install and run boot-repair (if you
google boot-repair, you will get instructions on how to do this).
boot-repair will find all bootable partitions, re-install grub and set up a
menu to all bootable partitions if you click 'automatic'.

This, by the way, is also a good recovery if you had windows and linux as a
multi-boot and the Android installation dropped your linux from the boot
menu.

I know this seems round the houses, but once you have the ubuntu live cd it
makes recovering a non-booting system very easy to fix, as you can hand
edit the grub.cfg, if need be.
I believe there is a version of the ubuntu live cd that has boot-repair
built in, but I have not tried it.

Folks,

Here's what I tested and it worked, just wished it symlinked to /dev/wlan0
seems like it (android) really wants wifi not ethernet?

**SNIPPED from Adam Whalen*
Oh well I know the commands are
Ctrl+salt+f1 to enter the console after installing the OS. Then use the
following:
Netcfg
- this will list the available connections
Netcfg eth0 up
- this will enable the first device
( eth1 would be your 2nd device then eth2...)
Netcfg eth0 dhcp
- this sets eth0 as a dhcp device to get an IP from modem or router
Finally use:
Setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8
- this routes the connection through the remote DNS so that the android x86
os can properly use the net.... that's all I know of it.
**SNIPPED from Adam Whalen**

Just wondering why the network doesn't seem to be seen by android's upper

Tried it on Dell Inspiron DUO:
Wifi works
touch screen works
sound works
touch pad works
keyboard (USA) works

As per Chih's post no screen rotation.
Had 2 random crashes
As per Chih terminal emulator does not work

General comment.
I noticed no difference to ICS bar the layout difference, so would
appreciate enlightenment on what should be better than ICS.

Just tried it on a desktop computer of mine with ASUS M2V (VIA K8T890 +
VT8237A Chipset)...

It worked fine when booted live from USB. Aside from that the Settings
would FC when clicking Storage... I haven't found any other issues yet.
Mouse and keyboard work well.
I don't have audio... well... maybe it's because I'm not using the onboard
audio but some other PCI cards...
Aside from these, other things that are supposed to work on my desktop
computer works. I have an ATI graphics card that works fine though it
doesn't seem to be very smooth.

For some reasons the onboard IDE and SATA controllers are not available,
thus I cannot install it to my hard drives and it won't boot from CD (stuck
at "Detecting Android-x86....... <many dots>" because it cannot detect the
presence of my CD drive anymore), and when I try to install from USB it
won't see my IDE and SATA drives even if I try to detect. I can only see my
USB flash drives. When booting, the boot log simply didn't say anything
about my IDE and SATA drives at all.
Were Android-x86 ever tested on VIA desktop chipsets before? The problem
persists on all versions of Android-x86 I know...
I doubt there would be any solutions for most desktop chipsets... after
all... AFAIK the project aims mainly at laptops and tablets...

Either VIA chip is not supported by linux, or
we didn't enable the driver in our kernel config.

If you can work with other Linux distro, say Fedora or Ubuntu,
try boot it to live mode and see if it can detect your HDD.
If yes, try to figure out what drivers it uses and report to us.

I already had lubuntu installed on my HDD on that computer, so VIA chipset
is indeed supported.

But how can I find the drivers it uses for the IDE and SATA conntroller? I
don't know much about linux yet.

EDIT: I just tried installing it on my laptop, Dell Inspiron M511R (AMD A8
CPU), it would not even boot, keep throwing errors about "VFS: Couldn't
find V7 on sda* (sda is my laptop's hard drive)" for my NTFS partitions,
some kind of ext*-fs error saying something like unable to read superblock,
and even errors about my laptop's DVD drive. Whatever it is, the laptop's
HDD controller can be detected, but the kernel doesn't seem to be able to
make it function properly...

I don't know much about the cause, but it seems like for quite a while
Android-x86 is having major problems with onboard hard drive controllers of
many chipsets. For some chipsets it couldn't detect the onboard hard disk
controllers, not mention the HDDs attached to them. And for others it would
detect but keep throwing errors when detecting the hard disks and cannot
properly access the contents, or just cause the system to be unable to boot
at all...

ok, tried it for a short time. Here are some feedback of a few boots..
I've installed it on a asus X53BY, which has a AMD Brazos E350 CPU with a
dual GPU system. No touch screen. 4GB ram and about 2GB disk partition.

It seems to basically work. Sometimes it crashes hard. (caps lock starts
blinking) I couldn't see the oops, but if it is logged somewhere I can post
it on request. It happened trying to run a video on youtube now the last
time, which might indicate GPU issues.

The computer seems to generally get warmer using Android then win7 (64bit
HP). Also the fan runs faster all the time.

I think Android would be better with some kind of tweaked iu for non touch
screen computers. Especially for scrolling in browsers (like on a normal
win/lin box) and the top menus should unfold on a click, instead og having
to drag them down. UI for x86 non touch could be a nice side project, and
then maybe just add it as an app in google play.

All in all I'll keep the partition running as a test setup.

And at last: Thanks for making this possible! I have Jelly Bean on my
laptop before I get it on my native android mobile phone (sgs2) :)

Thank you for the Christmas present!

Tried it on my Lenovo X200 convertible tablet.

i915 in recent vanilla kernels is getting massive rework, the black screen
is likely the backlight being randomly turned off. (or hung completely with
blinkenlight, depending on i915 boot options)

I'm currently attempting to sync the repo to try and come up with a device
~specific build for Lenovo X series convertibles, as there are loads of
them out there, and JB looks AWESOME on it.

Also the std distros have working versions of the i915 code that may be
able to be patched in.

I'll be hopefully taking a look at the thinkpad config used on the 4.0
build, as it almost worked.
(wacom pen ts miscal'd, no WIFI, BT worked though, and runs stable)

Is the kernel config stored on the iso? (I confess to not having thought of
it before now)

If you don't have i915 or radeon graphics, it won't work, those are all
that were supported with this build.
i915 has some issues with the present kernel, backlight randomly shuts off
and such, under heavy rework in Linux mainline.

Wonderful and thank you. I have been waiting on a brazos with ethernet
support (where the play store sees the connection) iso of 4.x for my htpc,
hope it's coming up! Will this have the ability to emulate arm built in?

Hi Chih Wei,

I installed and tested this build to the hard disk on my ASUS eee 1001PX

When things worked, they worked great, but there was always some kind of
random kernel panic - sometimes it happened in a few minutes, sometimes it
took longer. I got the following screenshot from debug mode.

Loading Image...

I can't trace more than that. Perhaps WiFi judging by the trace.

-Hardware video playback works AWESOME, finally.
-I tested audio playback - works fine
-Good out of box experience

Thanks for the test release.

Live version boots on an ASUS EeePC 900A. (i915)
Install not tested.

OK:
- WIFI
- Sound
- Some HW keys (vol up/down, brightness up/down)

Not OK:
- Mousewheel for selecting language in welcome wizard
- Screen rotate F9-F12 not working
- "Settings>Display>Brightness": neither manual nor automatic working.
- FC in Settings->Memory
- Pico TTS only works after manually reselecting the language (same as in
4.0 RC2)
- Without a google account "Settings>Language and Input" hangs up.
- Without a google account the browser hangs up.
- Youtube - does not play videos if HD option is on.
- Cannot install apps from play store. Will hang at "downloading..."
- Standby: Can activate Standby but system won't wake again. Will instead
go to standby again after showing a text cursor for 2-3 seconds.

Again thanks and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the test release.
Live and installed version boots on a Toshiba Portégé M700 (i915)
OK out of the box:
- Video
- WIFI
- Sound
- Some HW keys (vol up/down)
- Installation from Google Play

After modified:
- adding i915.noaccel=1 no kernel oops, switch to terminal possible
- touchpad: using device/hp/tx2500/input/SynPS_2_Synaptics_TouchPad.idc
- stylus:
wacom-input : with tpc device /dev/ttyS0 wrong calibration: modifed
device/ibm/thinkpad/wacom/wacserial.c:
static int SerialInitTabletPC(SERIALTABLET* pSerial)
{
pSerial->pfnParse = SerialParseTabletPC;
pSerial->state.values[WACOMFIELD_POSITION_X].nMax = 26112; //from
xf86-input-wacom log output in Xorg.0.log: x-max for toshiba 1280x800
pSerial->state.values[WACOMFIELD_POSITION_Y].nMax = 16320;//from
xf86-input-wacom log output in Xorg.0.log: y-max for toshiba 1280x800

call SerialInitWacom would gather right x/y-max, i will post a patch.

sometimes:
- crashes in browser or google play, hard to debug. have you any tips how
to debug (sshd? or something else?) debug=1 was on

not working:
- brightness, known bug:
backlight.brightness_file=/sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/brightness

backlight.max_brightness_file=/sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/max_brightness
echo 7 >$backlight.brightness_file works

- nice to know: tslib can not work because not supported protocol idsv4.
Btw: xf86-input-wacom does not need any calibration.
- pointercal has no effect
- Youtube - does not play videos
- some apps like skype ;-)

Thats all for now.. i would like to help with fixing bugs.

Hi,

I am new into this group and I am not a low level programmer. So I am
trying to look at Android X86 from a user standpoint. I tested many images
including this one onto several machines. I am always trying to use real
installation so to be sure that I am not overlooking any issue. I have 4
machines:

Acer Aspire One AOD255E (N455)
Acer Aspire One AOD522 (C50)
Acer Aspire One AOD722 (Celeron UL)
Medion Akyoya E1229 (N2600)

I do have a few others, but to me, Android X86 should be first a Netbook
system.

I could only get 4.2 to run on the Acer D522, got a black screen on the
other ones. However, it did only work into live mode, not into installed
mode (keeping rebooting). I am into agreement with some comments saying,
that maybe the 4.2 UI should be adapted to a netbook use. ICS does work in
a more friendly manner onto a netbook (or say with a keyboard and a mouse).

I do have one overall comment: to me, the main negative points of all
versions I tested up to now is the management of the stand by mode and
power saving. The main interest to use Android onto a Netbook should be
swifter reaction (which is achieved) and longer battery life (which is not
achieved). Using ICS, all my machines get into stand by but then wake up
again. non depending upon drivers, targets, etc, this seems to me a major
issue to be solved.

I also wanted to comments I have seen about multiple targets: why not
proposing a base version and driver packs for any additional targets. It
should make it easier for you guy who are developing the stuff.

I'll comer back with further comments when I have done more testing.

I, too, an confronted by a useless black screen upon boot. Booting in debug
mode allows me to play around and manually load modules, one by one, until
I found the culprit: i915. The issue may be related to KMS.

I am using a Dell Latitude D430 subnotebook. Important specs:

- Intel Core 2 Duo ULV @ 1.2GHz
- 2GB DDR2 RAM
- Intel 945GMA GPU
- Intel HDAudio
- Generic USB Audio

What I would like to do is use the USB audio for output and the Intel HDA
for input. My headphone port is physically damaged and the little speaker
by the keyboard is of too poor quality to be used for music.
