[The Doctor]

The captain is complaining about evening to rescuing the Doctor and companions. Typical Chibnall, weak male characters. And the Doctor is not himself. Looking for The TARDIS. Messing ships up. BAD!

Tent Hologramme! Looks like everything is all over the place. No consistency. The Doctor is promising to keep everyone alive. TheTARDIS is on the planet but an a space-time anomoly is occurring.

The chase is on on a planet without logic? Wrecked ships. Cowardly Captain. Crazy Planet. Stepgranddad and stepgrandson not looking all the greatest.

The planet certain does not make sense Doctor. Set sail! Everyone is debating. Same old mistrust. Cigar smoking man! Move on Chibnall!

Building without people. Sun setting quickly and killer robots are coming out of nowhere. The whole planet is a target range. Nice one Chibnall!! Ryan goes gun crazy . Hide behind the pillars! Use an EMP!! Nice. NOT!!

A lot of words, Yads. You even managed to spell some of them correctly.

No idea if any of it's meant to mean anything. Never mind. Situation normal.

I don't mind the episode having a pared-back plot. But then I'm the sort
of reader who prefers short stories to long novels anyway! (In fact I've
recently being revisiting some of my favourite MR James tales in the
run-up to Halloween, so I loved the idea of deadly sheets that come for
you even if you _don't_ whistle! But more of them later.)

And the opening of the episode does have a lot of plot going on. The
rescue at the beginning avoided the improbability of the ships just
happening to be in the right place at the right time, because they were
also after the TARDIS even if the pilots didn't know it yet! Then there
some nice character moments as everyone works out what happened. The
Doctor takes the chance to get hands-on again as she tries to fix the
spaceship. And I loved the effect when the cargo hold was jettisoned;
low-key nut nicely done, a bit like the episode as a whole!

The crash is less effective. Nobody thought to run sideways or
diagonally to get out from under the flight path of the advancing ship.
But that seems to be a standard TV convention, so I'll let it pass.

Unfortunately, that's followed pretty soon by the episode's next big
cliche. And no, I don't mean the revelation that the two spaceship
pilots are competing in a contest. As soon as Art Malik says that only
the winner will be allowed off the planet, you just _know_ the two
contestants are going to deliberately cross the finish line hand-in-hand
and tie for first place. There's a difference between simple
storytelling and simplistic storytelling, and this is one point where
they got it wrong.

It's the same when the male contestant tells everyone about his special
self-igniting cigar. Well, Chekov's obviously going to be using that as
a gun by the end of the episode!

But the writing's not all bad. There are some nice moments of dialogue
subverting all those trite, "I know you're always there for me and I
just want to be there for you," exchanges that you get in cheesy
American dramas. And I'm not bothered about the sniper robots' poor
marksmanship. They'd been abandoned in the desert for thousands of
years. Would they really be in perfect condition after all that time?

The worst thing about the scenes with the robots was Ryan's "Call Of
Duty" moment. The guy with dyspraxia is suddenly able to run and dodge
and shoot with perfect accuracy because he's played video games, despite
the fact operating a game controller uses different muscles with
different coordination! Worse, this scene doesn't even advance the plot
and is just there as padding!

But I still think the killer sheets are better monsters than the robots
anyway. How many kids were afraid to go to bed tonight in case the
bedding strangled them in their sleep? That's what DW should be all
about, and if some grumpy grown-ups think the monsters look silly,
that's because they aren't aimed at adults. We heave the the story arc
instead.

Yes, there's an arc. Chibnall could be be trying hard to make the Stenza
into this season's big bad. (Does this mean Tim Shaw is returning in the
finale?) And is this Timeless Child business hinting at a Cartmel-style
secret origin for the Doctor?

At least the episode's final cliche is justified in context. After the
quest is complete, it looks like the Doctor and companions are still
stranded on the planet anyway, but then the TARDIS turns up. Very
convenient coincidence, until you realise that the contest was timed to
end by it, and they had arrived early by taking the shortcut at night.
So, yeah, of course it would appear once everything was done!

I'm not keen on the new interior, but maybe it'll grow on me. Most of
the other visuals were adequate, even though everyone only cast one
shadow to the planet of three suns!

The actors of the two contestants were OK, but Art Malik was terribly
underused, only appearing in a couple of scenes. Could the BBC only
afford him for one day? And the Doctor and companions are developing nicely.

All in all, not a great episode, but more good than bad.

If this plot made any sense, they should have been put there for the

That's why I asked about the order the episodes were written
and filmed. They might've been doing a Davison and filming
the first episode towards the end of the season to give the
cast a chance to settle into their roles. If so, this was
the earlier version of the characters, and Oct 7 the revised
one.

It's been done successfully in Star Trek, Superman, Smallville, Buffy,
Babylon 5, and most other American series, because they were not filled
with soap opera, and the stories actually had plots. Even the Sarah Jane
adventures did a better job, because it wasn't filled with soap opera,
and the stories had plots.

Hamilton or like pilots. They sounded like morons. Even Harrison Ford
talks like a pilot, and uses the correct jargon, when he's flying and in
communication with air-traffic control.

They were taking part in a game. Neither of them sounded like computer
gamers or athletes either, but behaved like a couple of drunks from the
pub arguing with each other. So another chance Chibnall had for
characterization completely gone.

Whittaker doesn't sound like a scientist or a doctor, but is acting like
an imbecilic hysterical housewife. So yet another chance for
characterization blown.

You've got Gill who's a police officer and apart from sorting out the

Neither of them were soap. When the characters interacted it was always
about something to do with the plot. They didn't behave like people off
Coronation Street or EastEnders airing their dirty laundry in public.

So when Buffy talks to Giles, she doesn't go to him to talk about the
weather, or her parents, or who she's dating, unless the weather is
being manipulated by a daemon, or her mother has been possessed, or
she's dating a vampire. Giles' character is defined from the start as
the school librarian, and her watcher, and her character is defined from
the stat as a slayer. That's all that every discussion revolves around.

In Smallville, everything is based around Clark's special powers and the
villain of the week, and the focus remains squarely on that; so there's
plenty of time in a 45 minute episode to tell as story with a plot.

Characters are characterized by what they do and how they do it. Clark
has the powers, Chloe is the geek, Lex is the billionaire who's life was
save by Clark's, and who Clark wants to put on the straight and narrow,
Lana is the girl next door; and everything revolves around those
characters, with Clark trying to conceal his true identity from them
(until the eventually find out later on in the series). That's the brief
for every Smallville.

What does Doctor Who have, as written by Chibnall? Nothing but a bunch
of imbeciles as companions--I mean friends--who are all interchangeable
with each other, and an imbecile played by Whittaker who does nothing
but point her dildo at everything, which solves every problem for her by
magic, or she pulls stuff out of thin air as if by magic. At least in
Buffy, if she needed to know anything, she went to Giles, who looked in
a library book and gave it to Buffy, thus there was a natural
opportunity for characterization, not a forced one like that is in
Chibnall's and before that Moffat's last two series of fake Doctor Who.
If Clark wanted a problem solved or to ask a question he went to Chloe,
and they research it, and that added characterization, no gazing at
stupid dildos that did everything for you, and acting as if they were in
Coronation Street for the rest of the time.

OTOH I prefer this season to some previous seasons.

with soap opera, and the stories actually had plots.

In Smallville, everything is based around Clark's special powers and the
villain of the week, and the focus remains squarely on that; so there's
plenty of time in a 45 minute episode to tell as story with a plot.
Characters are characterized by what they do and how they do it. Clark
has the powers, Chloe is the geek, Lex is the billionaire who's life was
save by Clark's, and who Clark wants to put on the straight and narrow,
Lana is the girl next door; and everything revolves around those
characters, with Clark trying to conceal his true identity from them
(until the eventually find out later on in the series). That's the brief
for every Smallville.
What does Doctor Who have, as written by Chibnall? Nothing but a bunch
of imbeciles as companions--I mean friends--who are all interchangeable
with each other, and an imbecile played by Whittaker who does nothing
but point her dildo at everything, which solves every problem for her by
magic, or she pulls stuff out of thin air as if by magic. At least in
Buffy, if she needed to know anything, she went to Giles, who looked in
a library book and gave it to Buffy, thus there was a natural
opportunity for characterization, not a forced one like that is in
Chibnall's and before that Moffat's last two series of fake Doctor Who.
If Clark wanted a problem solved or to ask a question he went to Chloe,
and they research it, and that added characterization, no gazing at
stupid dildos that did everything for you, and acting as if they were in
Coronation Street for the rest of the time.

WEll screen writing quality has gone down.

Coal gas in no way smells like acetylene.

TBH an analysis would have been more sonic screwdriver waving about.
A proper scientific analysis would require proper equipment and time.
Neither type of analysis was really needed. The place was called
acetylene fields on the map, the garlicky smell just confirmed that
the acetylene was present.

So does coal gas. Why wasn't she shown carrying out a proper chemical
analysis, and then the episode might have actually contained some
science for once?

Coal gas in no way smells like acetylene.
TBH an analysis would have been more sonic screwdriver waving about.
A proper scientific analysis would require proper equipment and time.
Neither type of analysis was really needed. The place was called
acetylene fields on the map, the garlicky smell just confirmed that
the acetylene was present.

The pure gas has no odour. However it is often prepared from calcium carbide which leaves traces of phosphine. That's what smells like garlic.
