CBC - Krista Harris, the executive director of digital programming and
business development for all of CBC's English networks, has died.
Harris was an advocate of new technology, such as podcasting.
A spokesperson for the RCMP in Barrington, her family's hometown, said
Harris was found Sunday in the water near Daniel's Head Wharf on Cape
Sable Island, located on the southwest tip of Nova Scotia. No foul play
is suspected and there is no investigation underway.
In March, Harris was named executive director of digital programming
and business development for all of CBC's English networks. She had
served as CBC Radio's executive director of production and resources
since 2002.
Since joining the CBC in 1994, Harris worked in several senior roles in
both radio and new media, including regional director of operations and
regional director for CBC Radio in the Maritimes, interim managing
director of CBC.ca and associate director of programming for CBC Radio.
A vocal advocate of public broadcasting, Harris had most recently been
involved in expanding CBC Radio's reach through newer platforms, such
as podcasts and satellite radio.
"She always seemed to 'get it,'" CBC Radio producer and tech specialist
Tod Maffin told CBC Arts Online.
Maffin worked with Harris on several projects, including strategizing
how CBC Radio could expand on its initial trials in podcasting.
"It was exciting to see that she looked at these kinds of technology as
a way to open up communications with Canadians," he said.
"I've been in countless meetings where we would all get burdened down
by the bits and bytes of the technology and she would just cut through
it by challenging us with a question like 'What does this mean for
Canadians?'" he added.
"Krista really approached technology as a way to open up dialogue among
Canadians and that was a really refreshing spirit at CBC."
A CBC memorial is being planned and Harris's family is preparing
funeral arrangements.
