The University of Oregon and Oregon State have banned the term "civil
war" to refer to their sports rivalry because it evokes thoughts of
slavery. This not satire. This is a real decision made by supposedly
rational adults in 2020.

I guess Disney will have to pull down CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR now, or
at the very least put an unskippable disclaimer at the beginning warning
of the hateful power of these triggering words.

Linking slavery to 'civil war' is ridiculous - there have been
numerous Civil Wars in numerous countries with 1861-65 the only one I
know of where slavery was remotely connected. Oregon became a state in
1859 so I suppose they were minimally involved.

If you want to ban 'civil war' because it invokes bloodshed so be it -
but I am not aware there were ever slaves in the state of Oregon -
it's about as far from the Confederate states as it's possible to be
in the Lower 48.

There weren't. That's just what they call the rivalry between the two
top state schools, probably in football. Washington calls theirs the
Apple Cup and MT has a special name too, though I can't recall it.

Trust me - I understand sports rivalries between schools. About 3
years after I graduated from high school our arch rival's school burnt
down and they were double shifting the kids from our school in the
morning, theirs in the afternoon.

We felt SO sorry for our little brothers and sisters having to share
our school with THAT motley crew!

40 years later we scarcely remember.....

They've only banned the term for use in their sporting events.
What's the big deal?

It's like a school no longer using the term "Holocaust" when referring
to a bgg game.
Who wouldn't think that using THAT tem, would be offensive?

The fact of the matter is that the term "The Civil War" will ALWAYS be
associated with slavery in the US. Why? Because it fucking WAS
associated with slavery, from Day One.

Jesus, the people who keep complaining lib'rulz should stop clutching
their pearls should take their own fucking advice, for once.

Sure! They should just change the name of the game to "The Trail of

"The Big Holocaust".

My state banned blacks from entering, freed men or slave, in 1818 upon
admission, in violation of the liberal provisions of the Northwest
Ordinance. Oregon is hardly unique.

So it is not possible to have a war that is also civil without that
meaning it's a call back to America's Civil War. Some people are
becoming overly sensitive to issues of offense instead of
concentrating on real issues of racism. It's enough to make you wonder
if they are just trying to wear people down so they don't spend time
working on real solutions to racism.

Are you seriously not getting the point? It's to wear people down so
they have achieve a totality of power.

This has been obvious from Day One. The "agenda" is simply the means to an end.

Why do you always act like criticizing what someone says is equivalent
to advocating they be prevented by law from saying it?

I mean, the idea that you'd be stupid enough to believe that in the

you've had it explained to you and yet you still persist just takes your

You've gotta be pretty pig-headed to not want to evolve past the days

Why would somebody like that take an oath to serve that country, but not

I remember when I traveled in the South when I was a kid, I was

It was told it could be referred to as "The War Between the States" -
although they preferred "The War of Northern Aggression".

Did they say what term takes it's place? "The Unpleasantness" maybe?
War between the States works.

The University of Oregon and Oregon State have banned the term "civil
war" to refer to their sports rivalry because it evokes thoughts of
slavery. This not satire. This is a real decision made by supposedly

Steve Harvey? Are you trolling to get someone to say black lives don't
matter?

My ancestors fought with the White Army in the Civil War ... The Russian
Civil War ... Since they fought against the Red Army does that make me
racist against American Indians or just People of Sunburn ???
