Hi,
I have a customer who's sbs2003 has been having problems with 'partially
recieving' faxes for the last few months now on their external shared fax
device (MultiTech MT5600ZDX).. even though a support ticket has only been
raised last week.
Fax is fairly mission critical to the company and I have tried several ways
to resolve it, but the problem just seems to be getting worse and worse.
They can send faxes fine, and intermitently recieve(50%~), but as they are
often important documents its not good enough.
updated modem drivers,
Windows update,
Another new modem (cables inc.),
Phone Line test,
Reconfigured the fax,
changed the baud rate (on modem and ports),
Uninstalled / reinstalled fax service.
None of the above have helped, has anyone got any idea's please? Would be
MUCH appreciated!
I use Comtrol uPCI serial port cards with the above modems (12 at one
location, 16 at another, mostly 4-8 at locations) and don't experience
the problems you see.

Another person mentioned that they had problems with external modems and
could not get faxes reliably and switched to a BT internal modem card
and it resolved their problems.

What fax software are you using?

How is the modem connected to the server port built into the server or
another card?

Do you have a USR Courier Modem at hand?
My Fax reception works for quite a while now with this modem. A lot of other
posts suggest this modem as well.

P.S - I have also increased the no. of rings on the automatic answering to

See my post from 1/2/07 with the "Brooktrout TruFax card questions" subject
line.

Something may very well have changed with a Microsoft Update, because I
could fax outbound from my USR Courier external several months ago (around
October) but could not reliably fax out any more until I installed the
Brooktrout card.

They have two cards specifically for Microsoft Shared Fax, and they are
certified by GFi to work with FAXmaker if you need more ponies. They are the
TruFax and the TR1034 boards noted here:
http://www.cantata.com/products/shared_fax/.

If you want the cheaper of the two, it is the TruFax board. Click on this
link http://www.cantata.com/products/part_no._guide/index.cfm for part
numbers, then click on one of the two choices below. Note that the web page
is misleading when it states that a board is "for Europe only" or "for
non-Europe countries only." The "Europe only" boards just mean that they are
RoHS-compliant. The same board can be used in the USA. The webmaster has
been informed but has not changed it yet.

TR1034 for Microsoft Shared Fax RoHS
TruFax for Microsoft Shared Fax RoHS (for Europe only)

The most current part numbers all start with 999-169, so just figure out how
many ports you want a use the corresponding number. CALL THEM to make sure
you get the right board, since the UK appears to have slight differences.

My finger points to a PCI fax card, Brooktrout. It is NOT a modem; it is a
fax-only board.

Thankyou for all the feedback!!
In answer to your questions, yes I swapped out the MultiTech for a US R
courier modem but the problem just worsened. And yes, the RS232 connection
is
directly on the motherboard.
I was hoping for a software resolution, but all fingers seem to point
towards a PCI modem for the solution.
Thanks for all your help!

This sound to me like some Microsoft update has somehow screwed Com port
communications. What do you think does that sound feasible?

Perhaps, but another client whose server uses a 3CP3453 Courier modem works
fine.

At this point, I would recommend a Brooktrout TruFax board. The dual-line
card retails for $499USD, and you have spent more than that in time alone.
It works perfectly even on my Vonage fax line, when the USR Courier
002806-00, 3CP3453, and 3453B would not work well.

The TruFax loaner board has been in operation for two weeks at my problem
client whose USR (all three above models tried) would not receive 80% of
inbound faxes. It has received EVERY fax that it tried to get. Their manual
fax machine also worked well, but the modem would not.
