[OT] Woman attacked by fish in Ontario

I just saw this and thought it was bizarre enough to be appreciated by
readers of this newsgroup. It's not quite on the level of "man bites
dog" but it's not the far away either.

I'd say she's lucky not to have been eaten alive if her musky was that big!

For what it's worth, her story about how she got freed was not very
clear. Her friends came along and rushed her to hospital is all she
said. Maybe the fish let her go when it heard the friends coming? Or
maybe they had to beat if off with paddles or something?

but from the looks of the wound she got, it appears it bit her but then let go
when it realized she was too big to eat.

I suspect you're right otherwise I would have expected to hear something
about how she fought to get free of the fish and back up to the surface
in time to breathe. It must have been a frightening experience, that's
for sure!

doubt more than a few Indians got dragged to the bottom and eventually
eaten by monstrous muskies.

There are still occasional stories coming out of SE Asia about gigantic
catfish eating little kids whole.

The industrialized fishing that was later brought into the Great Lakes by White
people greatly reduced the number of fish as well as their average size, the
Indians simply couldn’t put a dent into the fish population with their primitive
fishing techniques

I remember reading somewhere that when the first paddle-wheel steam ships came
to the Great Lakes, the crews would use a couple of entire dried Lake Sturgeon as
fire starters for the boilers, as the fish could grow to 18+ feet long and weigh
several thousand pounds and the oily flesh quickly lit up and burned hot.

There have been numerous stories of people getting their toes mauled by dangling them in water off docks in northern lakes. If it were a snapping turtle, you'd have no toe left.

Apparently, this isn't unprecedented, just very unusual.

I caught a Muskie when I was young, it was 4ft long. Gave it to a vacationing American
who wanted to put on a plaque. They have teeth like small dogs only sharper.

I never caught a musky but back in high school, my buddies
and I found a perfect fishing spot off the Clinton River here in
Macomb Co. by sneaking into an outdoor boat storage lot and
we were slaying walleyes left and right, as there was a small
side outlet into the river and in the evening the minnows/shad
would come in towards shore up the channel and the walleyes
were right behind them.

Then one day I thought my lure had snagged an old boot or
something, as I could barely reel it in and when it got close to
shore, a big ass pike (the same family as muskies but smaller)
almost 30” long leaped out of the water and I managed to bring
it in.

I proudly took it home and my mom cleaned it and fried it up
but for me, pike is kinda rubbery and has a shitload of bones
so if I ever catch another, I’ll release it.

As for the secret fishing spot, we eventually got caught by the
property owner and he chased us off then put up a locked gate.

30 years ago I lived in Winnipeg for 4 years and yes I did see a
couple of news stories along those lines.

As you say, uncommon but not unprecedented.

(For what it's worth Winnipeg is the capital of a province that has
1000+ fresh water lakes so one would expect there to be lots of fish)
