Artis? You know what's in it? It's hard for me to fathom there could be much here I don't already have.

You misinterpret me. What I meant was that I was considering giving Randy all my Barbirolli CDs.

Haha. Since talking about myself didn't really work out, I'll try again.

Randy, why is this a must buy for you? Are your Barbirolli holdings thin? Or is there something rare here?

Thanks for keeping me on my toes, Frank. ;-)

I was afraid my remark would come across as hostile, which wasn't how it
was intended. Thanks for taking it well.

Oh, it could have, but once I saw it was you, I knew this was a technical point, and probably a bit tongue-in-cheek. Pays to be a known quantity, right? :-)

I only own some of the "staple" EMI recordings, like RVW, Sibelius, some Elgar.

Certainly will not have a great many duplications

Tower's listing is in a pdf download, but is all in Japanese.
I am sure there will be an HMV listing soon with more elaborate contents details.
My only disappointment with the Korean boxes from Artis, Venias, and Ars Nova (I have 30 of them so far) is the frequent exclusion of concerto recordings. From the Tower description that does not appear to be the case this time, so I am extremely confident this will be a must buy for me even before seeing the contents.

Do those Korean bargain boxes come with booklets, or just CDs in plain sleeves?

Thanks for the info! Does the recording info contains details like what is the source used for the issue?

Google translation of the Tower PDF file follows. Question: if Tower
doesn't sell outside Japan, why is there any English on their web site
at all? Why do English searches work? Strange?

Tower's listing is in a pdf download, but is all in Japanese.
I am sure there will be an HMV listing soon with more elaborate contents details.
My only disappointment with the Korean boxes from Artis, Venias, and Ars Nova (I have 30 of them so far) is the frequent exclusion of concerto recordings. From the Tower description that does not appear to be the case this time, so I am extremely confident this will be a must buy for me even before seeing the contents.
Google translation of the Tower PDF file follows. Question: if Tower
doesn't sell outside Japan, why is there any English on their web site
at all? Why do English searches work? Strange?

One correction: the 1964 Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings is with the strings of the London Symphony, not the Halle. It's a big and sonorous performance with an especially moving third movement.

No wonder. Most of the time those Korean bargain boxes would simply copy the existing CD releases, esp. the label Artis.

Maybe they received a cease and desist order from one of the represented record labels.
Given that none of the recordings were subject to copyright protection in Korea that is unlikely.
Possibilities I think of:

Production/quality issues requiring reproduction
Additional material discovered
Technical difficulties including originally planned recordings, or discovery that the planned materials were not in fact genuinely performed by the feature artist (this happened with one of the Knappertsbusch Venias boxes).

Korean's copy right law has 50 year protection after the author's death, so strictly speaking there is still one year of recording under protection. Maybe they are waiting for another year so everything will be in public domain?

Tower's listing is in a pdf download, but is all in Japanese.
I am sure there will be an HMV listing soon with more elaborate contents details.
My only disappointment with the Korean boxes from Artis, Venias, and Ars Nova (I have 30 of them so far) is the frequent exclusion of concerto recordings. From the Tower description that does not appear to be the case this time, so I am extremely confident this will be a must buy for me even before seeing the contents.
It is now listed at HMV.co.jp

Most likely I’ll be getting this too. Hopefully it’ll show up on HMV Japan because last I knew, Tower Japan won’t take foreign orders and you have to go through an intermediary to make a purchase.

Use existing master - so no new digital versions

When the English conductor Sir John Barbirolli died 50 years ago, he had just completed his groundbreaking Sibelius cycle - as the final point of a discography whose scope is still astonishing today: the complete Warner recordings from the old EMI archive are now available on 109 CDs. This not only shows Barbiroli's extreme repertoire versatility, but also a biographical peculiarity: the British maestro experienced all phases of fonography during his more than 40 years of recording activity. As a young contemporary of Elgar, Mahler, Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Ravel or Puccini, he stands for immense authenticity. The recordings, made between 1928 and 1970, appear in this box in the most modern remastering. A bonus CD with documentary material rounds off the release. The fact that Barbirolli is also considered in this country artistically above all as a British conductor, who was particularly well versed in the repertoire of his home country, is a foreshortening that removes this box with encyclopaedic force. Certainly: the recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto with Jaqueline du Pré is a milestone in the history of records, as are Barbiroli's interpretations of other English late Romantic composers such as Vaughan Williams, Bax, Ireland or Delius. But the descendant of Italian immigrants to England born in 1899 also set standards with Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Tchaikovsky or Dvořák. Already in the 1930s, he worked seven seasons in New York, where he succeeded Arturo Toscanini. He then returned to England as head of the Hallé Orchestra, where he made most of his discography - with soloists such as Fritz Kreisler, Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin and Artur Rubinstein, to name but a few. A special chapter of his huge discography are also his opera recordings from Purcell to Puccini.

The blurb here does imply some remastering?

https://www.warnerclassics.com/de/release/sir-john-barbirolli-complete-warner-recordings

Spanning over 40 years, these recordings trace the career of Sir John Barbirolli, a conductor of proverbial warmth and generosity, a transformative force in British music and a legendary figure who collaborated with the greatest artists of his time. Shortly before his death in 1970 he completed a Sibelius cycle with the Hallé Orchestra, whose fortunes he had steered for nearly three decades, and among other composers closely linked with his name are Elgar, Delius, Brahms, Mozart, Mahler and Puccini. The wide-ranging contents of this landmark109-disc set, which comprises all the recordings Barbirolli made for HMV and PYE, include previously unpublished items and documentary material. Everything has been remastered in high definition, LP-era recordings from the original tapes, and 78-era recordings from the best available sources.

Thanks to the Warner Store I got it about a week and a half ago. And I agree, fabulous! Still on pre-war recordings at the moment, which generally are very well-transferred. Among the vocal recordings from 78rpm, there are one or two noisy sides, and some where the bass is lacking, but really good listening so far.

Appreciate any feedback on the "is it worth it" question. I have probably every one of these recordings in some form already, and so the question is how much better the early recordings are then Dutton and whether remastering of EMI material brings anything to the table. Especially if you are on a budget, which I am.

Just about ANY transfer is going to be better than Dutton, unless you prefer overly scrubbed, processed and sanitized transfers with generic reverb. I suppose it’s to make them sound like (bad) LPs?.....just my opinion of course, and that’s not to say Warner gets everything “right” either, but I would bank on them being way closer to the actual sonics of the originals.

Didn’t hear the glitches on AppleMusic streaming. But I sure did enjoy those two recordings of Edwardian-era British excellence. Exciting stuff. And very well-transferred and mastered with care. Order placed from Presto.

No. But I ordered $100 or so worth of heavily discounted
Lego sets for my grandchildren. The seller's shipper
screwed up and sent my Legos to someone else and his
baseball cap to me. The seller is refunding only 30% (as a
gesture) because the shipping error wasn't his fault.

Our solace should be that thousands of transaction take
place without incident. Having said that I will be
extremely annoyed if my Presto order gets hung up at FedEx.

Maybe you can visit your Barbirolli set at at FedEx in
Memphis and listen to it there.

It isn't in Memphis.

It is at my local FedEx delivery location.

And absolutely nothing happening.

Limbo Land.

FedEx has become prime example of how I describe big enterprises.

Some say "Too Big to Fail". Maybe so, But the real truth i they are "Too Big to Give a Damn".

Perfect example where the world's anti-trust regulators fail the consumer.

Now that is a crazy story! FedEx is great *except* when anything goes wrong, and then they go into hiding. I've had plenty of delivery problems with them, but never one related to Customs. Learn something new every day :-( I'm sure most people here have seen Presto's revised posting (as of Monday 6/22) concerning delivery to the US: "We are receiving reports that some orders are taking up to 4-6 weeks to arrive, please let us know if your order has not arrived 8 weeks after shipping."

My copy of the Peter Serkin box was sent by Presto on June 1 via air mail (not FedEx) and has yet to arrive. Only a little more than 3 weeks but I'm still antsy because mail delivery here has seemed almost random: no way to predict what will arrive and when, and sometimes there is no delivery at all. Further restrictions on plane flights between the US and Europe are not going to help matters. It should go without saying that I hold Presto to account for *none* of this: they and JPC have provided consistently wonderful service over the years.

I too have great confidence that the sellers (Presto) will do what they reasonably can to make this right. They always have (unlike Big A, another example of Too Big to Give a Damn)

Of all of the likely root cause possibilities the one I suspect the most is that customs did in fact clear the package but the clearance did not get properly entered into the FedEx information management system. I have not been able to speak to anyone that can positively tell me the package does not have the clearance stamp on it. All they can says is what the computer tells them. When I suggest the computer could be in error they are aghast!

Sounds awfully 1984ish and Brave-New-World=like, doesn't it.

I once failed an army draft physical, but they screwed up
the records and drafted me anyway. Top that.

P.S. I did get out of serving in the end.

These shippers are under an enormous amount of stress. In addition to the monstrous amount of extra volume, they too are trying to keep their employees from getting sick. It would behoove all of us to keep this in mind and try to minimize shipments or consolidate as much as possible. If something can be purchased US mainland, then that is what I do. I am doing my best to not place orders that require international shipments. For the record, I received my Peter Serkin box the day it came out, but I ordered through Amazon and it was shipped from a US warehouse.

All sensible points. Following up on my previous post, my copy of the Peter Serkin box arrived in NJ two days ago--4 weeks to the day after it was shipped by Presto. More than reasonable, especially under present circumstances. I've never been much affected by the next-day mania except for genuine needs like prescription medicines. Our kids can't understand why we won't pay for Amazon Prime.

I think back with a smile to the halcyon days of Berkshire Record Outlet, when customers were admonished not to contact them about shipments until at least three weeks had elapsed. That seems like an eternity nowadays. I used to have books shipped from overseas via seamail to save on postal charges, and it was a pleasant surprise when they arrived a couple of months later. With the demise of seamail the charge for shipping books by airmail can exceed the cost of the books themselves. I just ordered some books from Israel at a 40% discount in honor of "Book Week." With the postage the total cost is roughly equal to the list price, so I try to think of it as "list price with free shipping." :-)

If we all began ordering from domestic sources only we would
harm the livelihoods of people engaged in the inport/export
industry, both foreign and domestic, while (relatively)
impoverishing ourselves at the same time.

No thanks.

I tend to order more cds to get over the amount where shipping becomes free, in the case of certain items and labels. The Eloquence label is one example. I use Amazon Aus. Hence very recently I have acquired a lot of Ansermet which is on Decca Eloquence. So glad I did too.

Who's got the set??! And what is the first disc you selected to pop in the Discman?

By the way, I was reading up on the latest Superdisc list (2019) by The Absolute Sound magazine, and saw Sir John's name on it: the Mahler 9 w/ BPO in the edition (2016?) made by The Electric Recording Co. label, which was the subject of a recent thread started by moi.

http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/2019-tas-super-lp-list/

<< Of the many articles and reviews that Harry Pearson wrote for The Absolute Sound, his annual Super LP List (aka SuperDisc List) may have been the most eagerly anticipated. The issue in which it was published was the one that everyone had to buy, borrow, or copy. Why? Because whether you were rich or poor, active in the high-end audio market or just kicking tires, it was the one issue of TAS you could make daily practical use of—it was your road map to the absolute sound.

Back in the day, hundreds of guys like me carried that list with them to record stores, garage sales, estate sales, library sales, rummage sales, the basements of unsuspecting neighbors. With HP’s recommendations in hand we pawed at musty cardboard boxes and peach bins full of vinyl, rifling through stack after stack of fifty-cent LPs stinking of mildew and cat piss in search of the titles Harry deemed worthiest.

Who didn’t lust for that 1s/1s Pines of Rome? Who wouldn’t have sold his soul for—or cheated a widow and an orphan out of—that black-label Weavers Reunion at Carnegie Hall? Almost single-handedly HP created a market so important, voracious, and enduring that, even now, used-record dealers demand a premium for mint copies of his favorites, while select titles from his Super LP List continue to be re-issued by companies the world over.

It is our aim here to preserve and expand upon what Harry created. While it may not ignite the frenzy that it once did, TAS’ new Super LP List contains every LP that HP recommended when the list was last published by him. It also contains hundreds of titles that JV and the TAS staff have deemed worthy of adding.

In keeping with Harry’s practice, each entry new to this latest version of the list is bolded and marked with a red dagger symbol (†), and those recordings that are still available new or re-issued are marked with a double dagger (‡). LPs with particularly natural, as opposed to hi-fi spectacular sound have been awarded an asterisk (*).

This probably goes without saying, but be aware that a few of the most recent pop entries contain “adult” lyrics. >>

Last week AppleMusic uploaded a 70-minute digital-only album of Heifetz’s 78 r.p.m. records with SJB (Sir John Barbirolli). As previously mentioned up-thread, transfers were effected using rather noisy shellac disks. Having listened these amazing performances once again (Wieniawski 2, Vieuxtemps 4, Saint-Saëns Introduction and rondo capriccioso, etc.) I definitely can’t say the new productions are superior to the Naxos titles from the mid-aughts. Far from it.

My set finally arrived from Amazon US. Ordered on July 6 for $179.98. Delivered in a box within a box: sturdy Optimal Media GmbH manufacturer corrugated cardboard box, taped & sealed, inside thinner Amazon shipping box. Still got a fat corner ding from having been dropped from height at somewhere along the shipping line :-/ No exchanges as Amazon US apparently fulfilled only its pre-order number, so I will live with it. Also, a split along the side of one corner of the top. Excited to finally have this in my hands. First audition: CD 17: Elgar 2 ,Cockaigne Overture (In London Town) and Introduction and Allegro for strings with Hallé Orchestra, 1953/54.

"Newly remastered in 192kHz/24-bit from original tapes by Studio Art & Son, Annecy."

It's not why I buy things, but Warner's packaging doesn't hold a candle to what Sony gave us with Szell, Walter and Lenny. Forget them. It doesn't hold a candle to what you get in the Munch or Reiner boxes.

I haven't had a chance to really analyze it, but I'm confused as to why it starts with 78s and then reverts to them late in the box.

Finally, the cover treatments, where all the Angel logos were removed and replaced with Warner ones is just pathetic. Do they not have the logo rights, or is this just brand inflexibility? The results are just ugly.

FWIW, the 180-page booklet that comes with DG's 450 Staatskapelle Berlin box is just beautiful.

They seem to have grouped it by orchestral first (CD1-69), then concertos (70-97), then choral (88-91), complete operas (92-97), vocal excerpts (98-end), and sorted approximately chronologically in each grouping.

I'm going to guess that what makes this sensible is that similar contemporaneous content has been added to the discs to save space, and that the content only follows the original LP content as a starting point. If the net result of these compromises is fewer discs, great.

I concur. I'm satisfied with the way Sony does it (orig. programs) and also the way Warners does it. It's all good. We're living a golden age of CD reissues. In good time the boxes will be gone forever, and all we'll have are downloads. And that's good too! 24-bit/192 kHz downloads? Bring down the price and then we'll talk. But keep the boxes coming in meantime.

The Barbirolli Warner box (109 CDs) is now listed on US Amazon for $179.98
I pre-ordered it with free shipping on Amazon Prime. No shipping charge, but I will have to pay $16.20 Ill sales tax. Total = $196.18
Is there a cheaper price anywhere?

BUT there is a catch: it won't be released in the US until Aug 17.
Supposedly the UK release date is June 19.
It's possible that US Amazon could move the release date up.
I locked in the US price by pre-ordering it, but I can cancel it.

It’s about $208 at Presto with express shipping to the US (the price fluctuates with the exchange rate). Definitely worth 10 bucks to not have to deal with the usual Amazon box-tease.

However, plans changed, it reverse to international released.
Just like the case of Karajan (DG) Box set.

I started this thread just over a year ago when the Korean label Artis, one of three Korean labels that specialize in large artist-focused boxes of public domain recordings, announced a 109 CD Barbiroli box. That release disappeared from retail listings before it's release date after Warner announced they were releasing a similar box this year. I am much happier this way for sure though, as Artis just "steals" already existing digital versions, whereas Warner has apparently remastered the whole corpus here.

I will take the arrangement of the Barbiroli set over the 2008 EMI Karajan arrangement any day.
In those two sets, while EMI broke down the Orchestral and Concerto works into one box and the Vocal and Stage works into another box (which I am OK with), within each of those boxes they were arranged by Orchestra, and then alpha by composer. So the same composition could be found in up to three different parts of a box (VPO, Philharmonia, and BPO)
That was crazy!

The more recent Karajan Remastered edition (of EMI material) makes some vague organizational sense, but it’s maddening to have many of the original LP couplings spread over 2 or 3 sets. The “digital” issues on streaming services thankfully don’t do it that way, but many titles are not yet available this way. I’m fine with the more or less chronological method within categories on the Barbirolli set, but the booklet is completely inadequate as far as giving a method to find things. EMI used to give such wonderful booklets with all of the recording information in one place. 109 separate cardboard sleeves doesn’t exactly cut it.

One thing I do like about the Warners sets, as opposed to Sony, is the complete listings on the back of card sleeves. I mean, the producers, engineers, recording dates & locations, matrix numbers, mastering info. It's cumbersome to have the jacket sitting next to me and then have to refer to the booklet/book. And it saves paper. This is the type of Green New Deal I'm all for.

I hate it when the recording info is at the back of the
booklet and you have to go back and forth to figure out
which track was recorded when.

- chronology
- disk capacity (i.e. "fill 'er up")
- thematic consistency

IF it saves me $$, fine.

I certainly envision a better organized setup, but I’m just happy this set materialized.

My two cents about the transfers.....so far there have been more hits than misses (the Pye Elgar 1 as usual sounds strange, but I suppose the source material is compromised). I won’t say that the 78 era material is all taken from the best possible sources. In some cases a bit more legwork to find better copies, when commercial pressings must be utilized, could indeed have yielded better results. However, the approach to the transfer work is mostly skillful, and slightly towards the side of LESS processing is better, which is my preference. Certainly this is preferable to the overprocessed, synthetic sound of the Michael Dutton transfers, where comparisons are available. Less understandable are a couple of pitch discrepancies I’ve caught. Some of the 78 items are seemingly taken from previous transfers (once on HMV Treasury Lps) such as the Bax 3rd and Vaughan Williams 5th. Even though Art et Son have “remastered” these, they still show some of the earmarks of that era of work, which is not all a bad thing, but it’s noticeable that the EQ choices are more confined sounding. I guess the time has passed when we can expect original master materials to exist for many items that had not been reissued previously?

I certainly envision a better organized setup, but I’m just happy this set materialized.

Thanks for sharing this! Have you (or anyone else) compared any of the stereo EMI CDs to earlier masterings? I just listened to an EMI remaster of the Brahms PC with Barenboim and found the sound to be dull. I'm curious if the new set has a clearer, more open sound.

Thanks,
George
