Well whoopdie-freakin-doo.....iOS 12 is released.

What a bunch of childish nonsense. These guys gotta be kiddin'. C'mon
Tim, is this the best Apple can do? Have y'all totally given up on
innovation, creativity and real development?

Your iPad or iPhone tells you when you're using it too much? Whatever
happened to self-control and personal responsibility?

Silly Siri shortucts; stupid cartoon icons; messages? BFD, who cares.

Etc., etc., etc.

Steve must be rolling over in his grave!
The betas were dismal on speed for example.

Let's see how the actual release fares, where in the beta
- Nobody got anywhere near the "claimed" speedups (not even close!)
- Many items were slower (some *much* slower)
- Benchmarks were "about the same" in most respects

To be fair, I don't see how just updating the iOS version will ever give
the kinds of patently unbelievable claims that Apple Marketing makes.

*Let's see if _any_ Apple speed claim is backed up by objective tests.*

Those went out the window many years ago, about the same time the
"Politically Correct" nutters started getting into positions of power.
It's now the Nanny State where people have to be told, if not forced,
to do what's supposedly "good" for them ... of course, thanks to all
the silly "studies", what is good for you today will be bad for you
tomorrow, and then will be good for you again in an ongoing cycle of

*Proof positive there's nothing of any substance in iOS 12 all by itself*

MacWorld said that one of the best part of iOS 12 *isn't even in iOS 12!*
<https://www.macworld.com/article/3252034/ios/ios-12-features-release-date-and-how-to-install.html>

Verbatim, MacWorld said:
"The Shortcuts app is not included as part of iOS 12, but it's
one of the best features of this release."

Shortcuts is yet another kludge to the Siri app, as described here:
<https://www.macworld.com/article/3305334/ios/the-shortcuts-app-for-ios-12-is-now-availablemake-sure-you-grab-it.html>

BTW, Apple didn't even write it - they adapted Workflow, who wrote it.

MacWorld was very clear, stating numerous times, one of the best part of
iOS 12 is this app, which Apple didn't write, and, which isn't even in iOS
12, per se.

I clicked past that stuff. iBooks got a revamp. Still limited on background
colors 😐. Kindle’s green background was surprisingly nice. Apple’s books
app is pretty good though. The new setup seems interesting from
organization, usage, and aesthetic standpoints. Still need more background
color choices, but not a dealbreaker.

*There's absolutely nothing of any import whatsoever in iOS 12.*
If there is, you could state what it is, and defend it as being a big deal.

According to MacWorld, there's absolutely nothing interesting in iOS 12.

The *order* below is that of MacWorld, which is *very telling*.
They start with meaningless and then get less meaningful from there!

1. Apple Maps, which isn't part of the OS - it's an app, was updated.
Duh. Apple Maps has a _lot_ of updating, so we'll be hearing that one
for decades to come (since Apple has never once made a best-in-class
app in the entire history of iOS that works outside the walled garden).

2. WTF? Easier sharing of the 3D graphics and animations used in augmented
reality apps. Whom are they kidding. This is the 2nd most important
feature?

3. WTF? Improvements to the Photos app. That's the 3rd most important
feature? Improvements to an admittedly historically crappy Photos app?
HINT: Number one feature: matching the design language of Apple Music and
the App Store. WTF? Does Apple think it's users are complete morons?

4. Yikes! Siri Shortcuts and Suggestions. Notice this isn't even *in* iOS
12 for heaven's sake. And yet it's listed as the number 4 "big deal".

5. A few Apple apps will be redesigned in iOS 12, some launching on the
iPad for the first time. Again, WTF? These are apps. They have nothing to
do with the operating system per se. Apps need improvement all the time.

6. Now comes the less important stuff (as if the above was important).
iBooks has been renamed
News apps actually finds news
Stocks app is prettier
Voice Memos saves to the iCloud
And it gets more and more meaningless from there.

I’m not here for your silly obsessive pissing contest. I have a life.

This update was supposed to focus on making what is already there work
better and had some bug fixes. iBooks was far more than renamed. The
organization schema are different. Now books can be added to more than one
collection. That is a big deal (for me). Podcasts and Books are two
features I find important. Podcasts looks a bit different too.

The Ferrari Daytona was a sweet car. To change it too much, spinner rims or
a gaudy hood scoop, would be a travesty. Android is the kit car knockoff
used on Miami Vice until they bought a real iPhone (iOS 12 Testarossa)

Actually Android is AMC Pacer with broken windshield. It’s for the hoi
polloi so everyone can see inside the fishbowl.

Actually using the Books app instead of reflexive Apple bashing as you do I
can say the Books revamp is a big deal. But that’s a matter for Apple users
to be concerned with and beyond comprehension of Obsessive Reflexive Apple
Bashers. You are the religiously motivated one here. Your religion needs
its hassatan...Apple. Without Apple your life would lose all purpose. You
would lack your bizarre moral crusade. You would wither away. Sad life
that.

That said the Kindle app has some aspects that are better than Apple’s
Books (eg- more background colors). Other aspects not so much. YMMV. And
that acronym is the crux of the matter. And in your never-ending passion
play you bear your Apple Bashing cross as the locals beat you and put a
crown of thorns on your head. Such unwavering devotion to a cause. Your
tombstone years from now will read “He hated Apple iOS so much.” Such a sad
way to sum up a misspent life.

Your statement that there is nothing useful in iOS 12 is pure BS.
Usefulness carries over from iOS 11 and previous versions. That refutation
was a cake walk. There’s some weird “Measure” app that has a level function
and measures objects using the camera. Someone might find that useful.
Second refutation handing your ass back on a platter. That was easy.

There is an obnoxious explanation on the Lock Screen telling me how “Do Not

You named an app, for heaven's sake. An app? A silly stinking little app.
Most of what was in that silly stinking little app was window washing.
And MacWorld stated it clearly.
It was dressed up.

To you Apple Apologists, two things are obvious:
1. You think a silly stinking little app is an entire operating system,
2. If that tiny little almost meaningless app is dressed up, you're wowed.

HINT: It's a silly stinking little app for Christs' sake. Not an OS!
Post by *Hemidactylus*
Usefulness carries over from iOS 11 and previous versions.
As you are aware, Apple never tests their iOS releases in the real world.

You could move a tiny increment from iOS 7.0.0 to 7.0.1 and that will break
everything you have set up for cross platform use in the real world.

*Ask Apple Support for help & they say the real world is "not supported".*

Apple has many times had to *destroy* iOS only days after release!
They had to beg customers to get off of releases they knowingly released
only 10 days prior for heaven's sake.

Those are facts.

*Apple does not test their iOS releases in the real world.*
That's a fact.

In addition, Apple is known to secretly throttle CPUs in IOS updates.
That's a fact.

Otherwise go to the Apple page that describes iOS 12,

Since this is an adult comment, I'll treat you as an adult, joe.

The problem I have with people discussing iOS 12 is that the Apple
Apologists can't simply admit the truth about it.

I have no problem admitting the truth about Windows (e.g., it hasn't
meaningfully improved in decades), nor Android (the settings menu is a
disorganized mess), or Linux (it doesn't always have the software choices I
like), or ioS (it can't do what Android can do), etc.

First off, it's well known that my iPads *stay* on the iOS version they
were born with, since I can easily prove that not only is there nothing of
any use normally in _any_ iOS update, but there is often bad stuff, not the
least of which is that Apple never tests whether their iOS updates break
connectivity to the real world.

The grandkids updated it once, and I had to hold myself back, since they
were so proud that they followed the Apple mantra like little lost sheep.

It's an adult question to ask if there is anything of any meaningful import
to most users in iOS.

When the answer comes back that a silly stinking little app is the biggest
deal they can come up with, I have to think of what is inside their brain
that makes them think an app, for Christs' sake, is an iOS.

Apps are updated every single day, all day, every day - where the fact that
an app was renamed and make to look more like other apps is NOT an
operating system upgrade.

It's just not.

Only a child can't tell the difference between an app and an iOS.

meaningful that iOS added in iOS 12 that wasn't there before that enables
anything that is meaningful to most users.
Just one thing.
HINT: You can't even list a single OS _fact_, can you?
Post by *Hemidactylus*
Why must there be a drastic life changing changing
of the feature set every year. If Apple had made major changes I could
imagine you would bash that too.
Hemidactylus ... you just proved how your mind works with that statement.
All Apple Apologists prove they live in imaginary worlds with their words.
Instead of making incessant meaningless pseudoprofound statements, why
don't you simply name a *single* meaningful iOS improvement?
If you can't find a single meaningful iOS improvement (Hint: You can't.),
then why can't you Apple Apologists simply admit the facts?
I admit facts about Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS all the time.
That's because I'm not an apologist.
*Why can't you Apple Apologist simple admit the facts about iOS 12?*
Post by *Hemidactylus*
There were security updates. And some improvements in visualization of
battery usage. And I use my iPhone as I did before updating to iOS 12
because I can. Your protests are pointless. Life goes on unabated.
More bullshit from you Hemidactylus,
What "security updates"/
Name one meaningful security update, Hemidactylus.
Just one.
HINT: The throttling of the CPUs was billed as a "performance update" for
Christ's sake.
Every time you Apple Apologists post, you prove your thought processes are
that of small children.
*You are full of meaningless bullshit - but nary a single meaningful fact.*

Correction to your innately childish response to facts, Hemidactylus.

*Facts bore you Hemidactylus.*

That's because you prove, in every post, you have the mind of a child.

Facts bore children, like you, Hemidactylus.

Fact is that only Apple Apologists will state anything useful in iOS 12.

And, even those Apple Appologists, can't actually _name_ anything.

That's a fact.

Techncially it's the whining morons (especially those on Wall Street!)
who now expect a massive device and OS upgrade every year ... whther
that's iOS, macOS, etc.

Apple has already said that it will now slowing down those massive

Oooooops. Typo. Craig said the iPad was just a toy - not iOS.

Same thing in the end though, which is that Craig is on record telling
MARKTING that their blatant incessant imaginary functionality claims has to
stop.

Hence, it seems he won out over Marketing since he clearly delivered minor
fixes in this current iOS 12 release.

There's nothing wrong with minor fixes in a release (Windows does it all
the time), but there is something _strange_ about Apple Apologists like
nospam who make wild claims of imaginary meaningful functionality.

Where is the meaningful new functionality in iOS 12?
HINT: It's imaginary.

Today I updated an iPhone 6S, an iPhone 6S+, an iPhone 8+, and an iPad Pro
10.5” to iOS12. So far I have not experienced any of the FUD this "Apple Jumps
the Shark with iOS 12” thread intended to impart.

There are a few obvious UI changes such as the changes to VoiceMemos, and
Messages. Otherwise there is nothing here that is going to negatively change how
I am going to use my iOS devices.

BTW, neither of the iP6’s have had the batteries replaced, neither show any
degradation of battery condition or performance. Battery Health reports Maximum
Capacity 100% for both, and Peak Performance Capability for both.

Sometimes you're an Apple Apologist, and sometimes you say things that
actual adults would agree with.

The fact you said the truth about iOS 12, is not a trait of the Apologists.

It would be interesting to see the benchmark scores (which is, after all,
how Apple got caught screwing the customer) and the iOS indication of
battery health.

Since Apple proved by their secret actions and then the instant coverup,
that they can't be trusted, it would be interesting to see if there is a
one-to-one correlation of actual facts.

Interesting. My 6S is currently showing 85%. Its just over 2 years old and
most

I just checked my step-daughter’s 3 year old, in constant use, iP6S with its
original battery, and it is showing Maximum Capacity at 92%, with current charge
at 85%.

My 3 year old iP6S+ which has been relegated to spare status shows Max Capacity
of 99%, and I check the charge once a month.

My old 6 Plus is at 100%. ¯\_(?)_/¯
My 6 Plus is at 82% but I don't believe that number: behaviour suggests
it is much worse. At times I've seen it visibly counting down 1% charge
every few seconds, when doing nothing in particular, e.g. declining from
over 70% to around 50% over a minute.

Coconut Battery on the Mac gives variable results, at times showing the
full charge capacity is just over 50% of the original value for that
model. (I've confirmed this by enabling power diagnostics and reading
the logs from iOS, so it isn't just Coconut Battery misunderstanding
something.)

That agrees with my observed behaviour, so based on a sample of one I'm
rather suspicous of Apple's battery health indicator. It may be missing
something like a faulty battery cell and only reporting the apparent
capacity at 100% charge, even though part of that charge is not really
there.

I'm going to get the battery replaced soon. It is no longer my primary
iPhone, but I want to have it available for demo purposes for the next
couple of weeks in its current state.

I checked with my local authorised service provider yesterday and they
can do the battery replacement in house (for my previous iPhone 5 a few
years ago the phone had to be sent from New Zealand to Australia for
battery servicing - we have no Apple Stores in NZ so that isn't an
option). I can book it in then drop off the phone when they have the
battery in stock.

I'll probably only be without it for part of a day, and if they are as
fast as they were with my MacBook Pro display replacement (for the
antireflective coating issue), I might not even have time for a cup of
coffee.

This is a maintence update, not major new features. Apple planned this
long ago. Although, this should had been called v11.5 but they wanted a
big number change.
Techncially it's the whining morons (especially those on Wall Street!)
who now expect a massive device and OS upgrade every year ... whther
that's iOS, macOS, etc.
Apple has already said that it will now slowing down those massive
upgrades to concentrate on fixing bugs and refiing what is already in
the OS. Every second year (at least) will be a "maintenance" upgrade.
Of course, the facts don't stop the whinging morons and know-nothing
Anti-Apple trolls from complaining.
Interesting. My 6S is currently showing 85%. Its just over 2 years old and
most weeks only gets charged twice a week when its got below 20%,
sometimes
down to low single digit percentages. It’s the only one I use now and I use
it for everything. Maybe that’s why mine is worse than yours, you having 4.
My 6S is a 128GB tho, maybe that’s the reason for the difference.
Post by Rod Speed
It has lately seemed to run down quicker than it used to, but I have just
noticed that ShopFully is using it a lot and since I never use it, I have
just deleted it and will see how that goes.
I have set a reminder to get the battery changed in
December before the cheap replacement runs out.

You misread my OP. No FUD intended.

The criticism was that this is at best an over-hyped (in the very best
Apple style) minor maintenance release hardly worthy of a new OS version
number. It also bemoaned the lack of significant new actually useful
features.

Actually, about the same criticisms apply to the new over-hyped iPhones
too.

Let's face it, smartphones are a very mature product that are
approaching being a commodity like milk, gasoline, sugar, socks,
t-shirts, or flour.

I mean really, how many bazillion megapixels does your phone camera
really need?

What's next- an unlock app that recognizes your hand shape, fingernail
configuration and aftershave as you reach to pick up the phone so you
don't have to wait for that terribly slow fingerprint reader, facial
recognition app, or worse- tap in a PIN?

At a Labor Day barbecue, my brother-in-law told me that his lawn guy
said his ex-wife's hairdresser is balling a salesman who works for a
company that supplies electronic components to Apple in China.

That guy said he knows for a fact that the up-model of the iPhone XI
will have a proprietary fart-sensor- calibrated to just your gas. When
triggered, It will then unlock the phone, determine your precise
location, call the nearest gastroenterologist, make an appointment for a
stat consult, and then program your nav app to get you there.

He also said the iPhone XII will self-drive your car there too......

Over-hyped perhaps. However, the last thing I need is some unwanted, and
over-hyped, bling feature. I prefer to have something truly useful, and subtle.

An example of a feature I find useful is one part of *Do Not Disturb*, the
*Until I Leave This Location* option. This is perfect for appointments where I
find myself in a dentist chair, or similar situations.

Yeah, and even better if it could work out when you
have used it to stop people waking you up. I do forget
to turn it off sometimes in that situation and it wouldn’t
be hard to work out when you have picked up the
phone again after turning do not disturb on.

Sure, that wouldn’t be useful in all situations, but
would be very useful when you use it when sleeping.

Too big for me. I keep my phone in my front
jeans or shorts pocket and the 6S is already
too big to make it easy to take out of your
pocket when driving along and you get
an incoming phone call when you didn’t
expect to get one.

And I notice that they still havent fixed the
pain in the arse swipe to answer an incoming
phone call when the phone is easy to pick up
when driving, with iOS 12. Tho admittedly
I havent thought to try telling siri to answer it.

I don’t either, but I do have it next to me, primarily because
I don’t use any light switches at all anymore. I use the Hue
system and tell it to turn the lights off at night before sleeping,
and get it to tell me the time and temperature when I wake
in the morning and to turn the main room lights on when
I get up.

With napping, I still have it with me, mainly to ask it the
time when I wake and to turn the do not disturb off.

So it would work fine for me if it turned the do not
disturb off when I physically move the phone after
turning the do not disturb on.

My only experience with it is with a neighbour's kid who
I used to be the personal banker for, who showed up with
a great wad of cash, got me to buy an iphone X online
with so he could have it for the regular trip to stay with
his relos in Sydney for the school holidays. He obviously
bragged about how lovely it was when he got it. I was
quite surprised at how well face id works in the dark.

Not sure how well it would work for me tho. I havent
bothered to shave for decades now and can get lazy
and end up looking like a wild man before I mow the
face and head right back to a rough stubble, because
that’s much easier than doing anything else with the
haircut. Not sure how well it can handle that.

And I don’t normally buy my iphones from apple,
I normally get them for cash from the cheapest
retailer I can find and so cant just return it if
it doesn’t work out well and it takes months
to go from the freshly mown head to looking
like a wild man anyway.

Don’t ever wear those. In the coldest weather its
two very heavy fleeces over a sweat top over a T shirt
with only hands pockets in the fleeces. And those
arent deep enough to reliably hold an iphone anyway.

I could obviously sew on a phone pocket but there
isnt much point given that it wouldn’t work in
summer where its always just a T shirt on top.

Not viable for me because I use a neckband bluetooth
headset during the garage/yard sale run so I can do
calls both in the car and out of the car in the garage/yard
sale itself, and when out of the car doing the shopping
run that I always do when the garage/yard sale is over.

Tho I spose I could add a handsfree for the car and
turn it off during the garage/yard sale and after run.

Yep. Amd if it's on your calendar, you get "until end of event" or
something like that.

I have a siri shrtcit called "Movie sign" that does the following:

1: set DND for 2h40m
2. set low power mode
3. turn brightness to lowest setting
4. Adds and event to my calendar or tomorrow to rate the movie.
5. set volume to lowest level
6. Sends a message to a friend of mine saying "Movie Sign: and showing my

My iPhone is not my primary camera, for me it is a camera of last resort,
and convenience. My photography is done with far more capable cameras and
lenses.

have been hooked on photography. So much so, that along with my iPhone 8+ I
have 7 digital cameras, and I have just bought an eighth camera body, and I am
awaiting delivery from B&H.

So? I got my Kodak Brownie in 1954, and also used my father’s 1947 Argus C3,
developing film, and producing prints in his wet darkroom. Those days for me
are long gone. My transition to digital from analog started with my first
digital camera in 1998.

Today I updated an iPhone 6S, an iPhone 6S+, an iPhone 8+, and an iPad Pro
10.5” to iOS12. So far I have not experienced any of the FUD this "Apple Jumps
the Shark with iOS 12” thread intended to impart.
You misread my OP. No FUD intended.
The criticism was that this is at best an over-hyped (in the very best
Apple style) minor maintenance release
Its nothing even remotely like a minor maintenance release with Siri alone.

significant new actually useful features.
Only by fools.

Actually, about the same criticisms apply to the new over-hyped iPhones
too.
Even sillier than you usually manage and that’s saying something.

Enough so there is no point in non phone cameras anymore.

At a Labor Day barbecue, my brother-in-law told me that his lawn guy said
his ex-wife's hairdresser is balling a salesman who works for a company
that supplies electronic components to Apple in China.
That guy said he knows for a fact that the up-model of the iPhone XI will
have a proprietary fart-sensor- calibrated to just your gas. When
triggered, It will then unlock the phone, determine your precise location,
call the nearest gastroenterologist, make an appointment for a stat
consult, and then program your nav app to get you there.
Even you should be able to do better than that pathetic effort.

Obviously not.

They _are_ a commodity. They are simply small mobile computers.

You can get great ones for $130 bucks (ask me how I know).
But - they only come in black.

SO Lewis will pay over $1,000 because his will be pink & gold.
Post by Wade Garrett

The iPhone is pretty good, but never the best or even close to the best.
The camera is at the bottom of the top ten though, which isn't bad.

I can see you don't fall for the hype.

You have to remember Apple MARKETING spends a LOT of money making people
*feel* safe.

It doesn't matter that they're not safe - all that matters is that they
*feel* safe.

So you'll see this "lock-stuff" hype for years to come because obviously
Apple MARKTING thinks it makes the customer *feel* safe.

Worse - other manufacturers have figured out that Apple MARKETING makes
billions for Apple - so they are copying Apple MARKETING strategy as if
they have the playbook in their very hands.

*So lots of the worst things about Apple are coming to Android.*

This is a maintence update, not major new features. Apple planned this
long ago. Although, this should had been called v11.5 but they wanted a
big number change.
I think one of the reasons there's nothing of import in iOS 12 might be
simply that Craig Federighi is on record for asking Marketing to stop
forcing the software engineers to be on the same schedule as the hardware.

Since Apple MARKETING is the best there is, they will still tout the
meaningless iOS 12 update as a "big deal", where only the adults in this
newsgroup will realize that it's not.

Only the Apple Apologists claim there is meaningful content in iOS 12.

Yet, they can't seem to ever name a single meaningful OS improvement.
Not a single one.

That's telling for adults who have sentient skills.

Books is one of my most used apps on my iPad, so the improvements in
Books are appreciated and welcome.

Group notifications and the ability to change notification settings from
a notification are great, as is the preset "deliver quietly". Do Not
Disturb until (event is over || I leave this location) is also great.

Big enhancements in the AR features, but obvs haven't gotten to see that
much yet as updates are still in the pipeline for most the AR apps.

Siri suggestions, Password management integration system wide (both
LastPass and 1Password updated for this on day one).

Use siri to find your iPhone, iPad, or AirPods.

And, of course, something Android users know nothing about, enhanced
privacy and security features, including a big jump in tracking
prevention.

Nope. I did not.

Not only did I not say it, but is entirely irrelevant. I don't give
a fuck what piece of shit other people buy. I don't care that all their
personal data is scraped by Chinese servers, facebook, and google. I
don't care that most android phones have malware embedded in them when

How is that relevant to iPhone? It's not.

it's a reasonable assumption. in fact, it's very likely, since it's the

Wrong again, nopspam, as always.

It's amazing how almost incomprehensibly _stupid_ you Apple Apologists are.

First off, on Android, where the overall cost of ownership is *vastly* less
than on iOS, I can purchase from two to five equivalent hardware Android
phones for the price of a single less functional in almost every way,
iPhone.

Second, on Android, and on iOS, I pretty much do far more than you'll ever
be able to do (since you "just give up" when dealing with the real world),
and you know that.

Every one of my apps but one (iHikeGPS) is free, and on Android, I can
rattle off the top of my head a score of functionality I can do with those
free apps that not a single iPhone ever sold, at any price, can come close
to doing (e.g., load any app launcher I want, automatically record phone
calls, wifi debugging with real-time graphical display of all access
points, etc.).

Meanwhile, as noted recently, I can boot to my desktop and manage the
entire visible file system (both read and write) on _both_ the iOS devices
and the Android devices, from the native file explorer on the dekstop, sans
a shred of the Orwellian restricted iTunes abomination or the AirDrop
asphyxiation.

You Apple Apologists prove time and again you can't do anything that Apple
Marketing didn't provide a big emoji button for. Hence, like "joe" did
yesterday, you cry like little babies whenever you attempt to deal with the
real world, and, when you invariably fail, you blame everyone else.

HINT: I never fail at _anything_ I attempt to do with iOS & Android.
(Well, _almost_ never ... as there _are_ some things iOS just can't do.)

Meanwhile, you moronic Apple Apologists whine that we can do whatever we
want, and you call us trolls because you can't do anything that we can.

I think that's kind of funny, don't you.
BKOnRamp, one of the three dumbest iOS users on this newsgroup (along with
Lewis and Jolly Roger) cries like a little baby because he can't do
anything.

Hehhehheh ... you iOS users are all technically incompetent, and you prove
it with every post. If Apple doesn't give you an emoji-shaped button, you
can't even deal with the real world on your own.

blame that on the troll.
First off, if you're talking about me, I have *plenty* of iOS devices, and
you know that.

Also, in my family are *plenty* of iOS iPhones, one of which is on my
family plan, and you know that also, since I buy them as gifts, and, as you
know, the girls, mostly, are not technical and love their iPhones.

The boys have more sense and aren't as afraid of technology so they prefer
the Android devices (although there is one sixth grader who pines for an
iPhone but his birthday is in January so I have time to decide what to get
him).

Isn’t an iPhone a tinier iPad with more functionality? If not for the Plus
line I would have been more tempted to get an iPad. The groups have overlap
in membership and topicality. I guess that makes me an “Apple Apologist”
who recognizes a big tent between groups. It’s not as if we need worry
about Samsung, Nexus, Motorola etc. We scale well.

The newsgroup was created to discuss the iPhone and related matters for
those interested. There's no law that says you actually have to own an
iPhone.
So please stop posting it to the iPad group as well.
The topic was about iOS 12, which is also relevant to the iPad, which
is why the original person cross-posted it. Simply swap "iPhone" in the
above statement with "iPad" and the statement still stands.
Both the iPhone and the iPad are simply modernised versions of the
Newton "with more functionality" ... so we should add
comp.sys.newton.misc to the list. ;-)

Once it became just about the iPhone, it became not relevant to the iPad
group, so it would have been appreciated if the posting had been
adjusted accordingly.

It only "became just about the iPhone" because some snipped a reply
making it out of context and *LOOK* like it was "just about the iPhone"
... it was actually talking about Siri Shortcuts, which are a feature
of both the iPad and iPhone.

Besides which, if you can't handle discussions going off the original
topic, then you should give up on Usenet (and most other forums and
human interactions!) right now and save yourself a lot of self-induced
stress. :-\

Clipping is indeed a skill to be honed! I hadn't appreciated the Siri
as I don't use it.

The great majority of newsgroup stress has been eliminated for me by
removing messages from, or referencing a small subset of users. I try
to avoid forums which can only be accessed on the Web.

My own experience of iOS 12 has been largely positive, which is an
improvement on some previous updates. I wish that Android was updated
as regularly.

unlike usenet, web forums are moderated, which would eliminate your
'stress'.

it is, it's just that the device makers aren't interested in releasing
it for their devices. they'd rather sell you a new device.

oreo and later splits the device-specific stuff out, except that oreo
only has about 15% share, so it will be another couple of years until
android catches up. more than half of android phones are still running
marshmallow or earlier.

creativity and real development?
Your iPad or iPhone tells you when you're using it too much? Whatever

Doesn’t work too well with kids etc.

This feature gives you data. If you don;t care, don't enable it.

Siri Shortcuts, and Shortcuts, are an astonishingly powerful feature
that may (probbaly, even) turn out to be the best usability enhancement
to smrat phones ever. Basically, you can program you phone.

Right now, I can say, "Hey siri, i'm going home" and the following
happens.

The weather is checked, and I get a notification for the weather for the
next hour. If sunset is in that hour, I am told about that. My wife gets
a text message with my current location and my ETA. My playlist start
playing. The thermostat at home is set, the exterior lights are turned
on. My son gets a text telling him he has [x[ minutes to finished his
homework and chores where X is my ETA. Finally, Safari opens up a
weblink on my server showing tonight's new TV sows (that I watch) and
reads them to me. Then my playlist starts playing.

I do that all without touching my phone.

I'm really interested in trying out shortcuts as so far siri has been a bit
of a disappointment. I can't find good tutorials on this, can you explain
how you achieved the above?

There are not a lot of resources since the GM just came out on Monday.
I've been running the beta since June and I've spent a lot of time in
Shortcuts.

There is the Automator's podcast discourse site at
https://talk.automators.fm and there is https://macstories.com

But basically it is just chaining tasks.

I get my weather from Darkskies using an API key (free), I parse that
data using magic variables to get the summary for the next hour (Sunny,
cloudy, raining, snowing, etc) and the sunset time. I check if sunset is
in the next 60 minutes. Etc etc.

Also, because I have my own webserver and I can call a URL from a
shortcut, I could do pretty much anything at all if I wanted to do the
programming on the back end (which is how I do the thermostats and TV
shows currently).

I misspoke above, my script did not send my ETA, it sent my travel time.
It now sends my ETA to my wife, but still sends the travel time to my
son.

Get date (curent date)
Adjust date (traveltime seconds)
Send message "yadda yadd [Adjusted Date as HH:mm]"

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. It's a bit beyond what I'm after just now, but
will keep it mind.

I now have the shortcuts app so can play with that :)
