Sen. Lindsey Graham's reelection campaign posted an advertisement
to Facebook earlier this month featuring a digitally altered image of
his opponent -- who is Black -- with a darker skin tone.
No it didn’t, the photo of the political opponent is in shadows
in the background, or are we to believe the guy’s shirt and suit
were also “digitally altered to provide a darker tone!”?

They admitted to doing it, Ed. Don't you read anything at all before
running off at the mouth?

It WAS digitally altered... take it from me. And if you don't want to
take it from me, take it FROM THEM, directly.

"The campaign ad, uploaded to Graham's Facebook on July 23, includes an
image of his Senate rival Jaime Harrison that was originally published
in the New York Times. The version of the image in Graham's ad, however,
shows Harrison surrounded by a dark, portrait-style background effect
with a notably darker skin tone.

The Graham campaign told CNN an effect was used in creating the ad but
pointed to past Facebook advertisements in which they said the same
effect was used on Graham's face, and called the issues raised about it
a "non-story."

Let me make it easy for you, since you don't appear to have the
attention span to read anything that's too long:

Well, whenever these attack ads picture the opposition it's always "It
was a dark and stormy night..."

I don't know how intentional it was other than that.

Anyway, the ads didn't attempt to change his race and nobody should be
arguing about "the degree of blackness" and how one shade is supposed to
be inferior to another (unless you're Garrett Morris and doing a
hilarious comedy skit on SNL).

If you're using Photoshop, there's a tool under the Adjustments menu
where you can control any aspect of the black/white tonal balance.

Loading Image...

I can literally control the color and tonal balance of a range of pixels
I choose. You can do almost anything in Photoshop.

Each element of that photo is likely to be on a separate layer, and
thus, subject to individual manipulation. In conjunction with a layer
mask, you can affect each masked element separate of every other.

To sum up... you can manipulate anything any way you choose.

Yep -- I don't use Photoshop; I use the GIMP for anything like that.
But this was much simpler. There's a simpler, but comprehensive Paint
program in the OS I use (Haiku) where I could do some basic manipulations
and got a pretty close replica of the ad image:

* Darkened the whole image so the shirt tone matched
-- face was still too light.

* Selected the face alone -- darkened it to match the ad
-- didn't have enough highlights

* Increased contrast of the selection to bring up the highlights to match.

* Reduced the saturation of the whole a bit, again to match.

That was all it needed,

Sure. Anybody who thinks the photo wasn't manipulated to produce the
effect we all saw is in denial.

Photoshop is a way more complicated a program... but it makes things
like this a lot easier to do just by moving a couple of sliders.

Shit... by using the Actions palette, you can record a set of actions
that duplicates and automates the process so that you can produce the
same effect with the push of A SINGLE button.

No way in hell. I've been a Pre-Press Specialist/Platemaker/Proofreader
in a commercial print shop since 1984. Retired this past February.

I've been using Photoshop for at least 25 years, have taken 2 college
courses in it (with my former Pre-Press Supervisor as one of the
professors) - and I've mastered about 70% of Photoshop.

We were an offset print shop - which means we've GOT to use CMYK in
order to replicate what we see on the screen to paper board. GIMP has
it's issues in that department. Pretty sure GIMP can't handle L*A*B*
colors well, either.

L*: Lightness
a*: Red/Green Value
b*: Blue/Yellow Value

https://www.xrite.com/blog/lab-color-space

GIMP is great for home users. Photoshop is an absolute must for
printers. We have to adhere to GRACoL standards to reproduce color
standards on all types of coatings (both UV and conventional, as well as
with a variety of heat-sealable water based and solvent coatings).

GrACoL stands for the General Requirements for Applications in
Commercial Offset Lithography. GRACoL is a color reproduction
Specification for sheetfed offset lithography. The GRACoL specification
pertains to sheetfed offset printing using ISO defined inks and paper.

I'm not going to argue with a Pro! (:-)) All I can say is that the GIMP
has handled anything I've needed to do. Things like restoring a 5247 slide
image from the 40-year-old negative -- needed a lot of colour curve fiddling.

But the point I was trying to make really was that both GIMP and Photoshop
are overkill for this fake. It was a simple job.

I'm still using an old copy of CS 5 (Photoshop and illustrator) because
they were the last versions that work without a monthly fee. After they
stop working, I'm going to try out GIMP and Aperture as replacements.

At home I use about 5% of what Photoshop offers. Thankfully, I no
longer need it.
All I print these days is snapshots and custom blu-ray covers. The only
'press' I have to match the fingerprint of is my little color laser printer.

No Pressroom manager is coming in asking me to add 3% Cyan to the
quarter-tones in a model's face, or take out 4% Magenta from the
half-tones (in just the cap of a bottle of perfume).

Photoshop is overkill for anybody who doesn't HAVE to use it. But when
your livelihood depends on matching both Heidelberg and Komori presses,
you really don't have a choice.

The version of the image in Graham's ad, however,
shows Harrison surrounded by a dark, portrait-style
background effect with a notably darker skin tone.
AND a noticeably darker shirt and suit, the entire picture
is darker, not just his skin.
So you didn't read, or just chose to ignore, the other branch
of this thread that showed that this wasn't the story...
Post by Ed Stasiak
They admitted to doing it, Ed.  Don't you read anything at all before
running off at the mouth?
It WAS digitally altered... take it from me.  And if you don't want to
take it from me, take it FROM THEM, directly.
Or -- take it from *me*.  Just to ckeck your claim I loaded the
original image into a paint program, and darkened it until the shirt
tone matched the ad.  The face is still much lighter.  Also note that
there is much more highlight on the lower lip and cheeks in the ad
that in the original.  Not possible unless that was faked, too.
    -- Pete --
If you're using Photoshop, there's a tool under the Adjustments menu
where you can control any aspect of the black/white tonal balance.
https://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/photo-editing/cc/tone-and-color/shadows-highlights/shadows-highlights-advanced-options.gif
I can literally control the color and tonal balance of a range of
pixels I choose.  You can do almost anything in Photoshop.
Each element of that photo is likely to be on a separate layer, and
thus, subject to individual manipulation.  In conjunction with a
layer mask, you can affect each masked element separate of every other.
To sum up... you can manipulate anything any way you choose.
Anybody that isn't a right wing asshole is also an asshole if they are
unable to mention JAIME HARRISON by name.  Are Dems just perpetual
losers or what?
Not this year...
I wouldn't be too sure. This pretending like our candidates have no
names is a horseshit strategy. And I see it all the time.

Yup. That way he looks way scarier! Republicans LOVE their prejudices.

Probably why John Ossoff's Republican opponent made his nose look bigger
too. (Ossoff is Jewish, don't you know...)

"Perdue's Senate campaign takes down ad that appears to enlarge nose of
Jewish opponent."
"Sitting U.S. Senator David Perdue's digital attack ad distorted my face
to enlarge and extend my nose. I'm Jewish. This is the oldest, most
obvious, least original anti-Semitic trope in history,"

Meaning what exactly? The fact remains they made Harrison look blacker
than he is.
This isn't even in dispute.

Some of your posts have such misleading subject lines. You
promised a post about an ad showing Lindsey Graham with a
brown nose, but didn't deliver. I feel cheated.
