Discussion:
Herbs that stimulate oxytocin production?
(too old to reply)

I know this isn't exactly a chemistry question, per se, but if you read my previous post, you know that I've been extracting chemicals from herbs.

Are there any? I know that no herb contains the actual hormone, and I know there are oxytocic herbs that *emulate* the hormone, but I'm curious to know if there are any herbs known to either "kick start" the pituitary gland to produce/release the actual hormone or else contain the necessary chemical precursors?

Thanks,
Jason

The reason for my little experiment, and the reason I'm asking, is that my therapist has diagnosed me with PTSD and anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure), so I'm working on the theory that if I can up the amounts of dopamine and oxytocin in my brain, I'll feel better.

Thanks,
Jason

Have you tried Scientology?

I forgot to warn you. Since you appear to be denigrating Scientology, be
prepared for Tom Cruise to show up at your house for an intervention.

PTSD seems to be the disease de jour. OP should be happy that response

PTSD with a side of ADHD and Anhedonia, just FYI. My question was quite serious and deserving of a serious answer. It just so happens that each of these conditions comes with a neurochemical imbalance and, since I'm not in a financial situation to be able to afford fancy prescription medication to correct that imbalance, I'm trying to find alternate remedies myself.

This is why I *hate* posting to Usenet. 95% of the people on these groups has the maturity of a 12-year-old no matter WHAT the question is! If you're going to mock or troll in the future, do yourself AND me a favor, and take it to kindergarten where it belongs. Leave the Internet to us grown-ups!

No, that would be you. LOL

*I'm* a grown man who knows what I'm talking about because I not only have an IQ over 130 but the good sense to do my research. I know which chemicals I have out-of-whack. I know which chemicals stimulate the brain to produce all but one of them. That one is the one I'm asking about. And WHY am I asking about it? Because there is no available information that I've been able to find.

So, I came here to ask people who actually either study chemistry or else work with chemicals for a living because I figured you all to be experts. Instead, I find children. My mistake.

Pot, kettle. You have an overly high opinion of yourself, and an arrogant
attitude to others. I have an IQ higher than yours, assuming neither of us
is lying. So what? I have enough sense not to cook up chemicals in my
house for ingestion.

If you want sympathy, start with the reason you want the information. Too
many people have used Usenet as a place to get homework answers, or to
avoid the trouble of actually doing the research needed. If you had
started out with, "Hey, I have a problem, and I need to know about x. I've
checked all over, and I can't find the info I need," you would have
received a different response. You started with the equivalent of, "Hey, I
found a neat chemical that's in these plants, and I want to get it out."
See the difference? "On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog." (TM)
With the info you gave, no one knows who you are.

If the abuse from us "children" is the worst thing that ever happens to
you, count yourself lucky. If you had started this thread in the heyday of
Usenet, you would have had wounds much worse than what you got, from people
whose strong suit wasn't sympathy. They've moved on or passed on, however,
so you're left with us old coots who hang out from habit.

So grow up, get over your snit, and maybe you'll get some more "adult"
answers.

Not cooking up. Extracting. Big difference, as folks pointed out in my other post on this topic. And I'm smart enough to be safe with it. Besides that, people take supplements extracted by the same methods on a daily basis.

And no, I'm not arrogant. I'm ticked off. Period. I don't need sympathy. I need an answer to my question. Why? Because YOU all are making assumptions about me based on a few sentences in an online post.

But you see, this is exactly the thing I'm talking about. I could have asked the same question without mentioning the PTSD or anything else, and I would've gotten the same kind of smartass responses.

As for your IQ vs mine? Doesn't matter squat. I figured the collective intelligence of the people here was pretty high or I wouldn't have come here to ask. What does matter is that I'm smart enough to go to people "in the know" instead of using the trial-and-error method, which COULD kill me.

Finally, clearly you weren't listening when I said that I DID my research on this, and that there IS none that I can find on what I'm specifically asking about. If you can't even bother to read a post all the way through and glean ALL the information in it, then you clearly aren't as smart as you *think* you are.

So, in conclusion, either answer the original question or back off!

False, but you didn't run that experiment. I've seen a lot of helpful
comments here when people give more information than you did.

Which is what I said in my post, which you didn't include.

But these same intelligent people are childish for not knowing that

enough info to lead to the latter conclusion.

I read the entire OP. The info about your search was not in the OP, so
you can't fuss about people drawing the wrong conclusion. You didn't say
you'd done the research until people started making smart comments.
Post by Jason Bodine
So, in conclusion, either answer the original question or back off!
Why should I answer your question? First, you still assume that everyone
should know things you haven't told them. Second, I have no desire to be
sued by your estate should your efforts prove fatal. Extract, purify,
bottle away to your heart's content, because you're obviously the
smartest guy in the room.

Ok. i know a few things that will calm your nerves and make you feel more as peace with yourself. first thing to do would to drink "lavender tea". this pretty much relaxes all your nerves and somewhat triggers the oxytocine to be released into your blood stream. another way to do this is by keeping a small container (preferably a glass vial or dropper) with a lavender and spearmint oil. whenever you feel stressed or whatnot smell the mixture. It works for me. if it doesn't work email me and i can give you a few more suggestions on stuff that can make you feel better naturally without any side effects of medicine produced by your local pharmacist.

To the best of my knowledge only sexual contact can stimulate oxytocin. One
herb cannabis is reputed to stimulate sexual contact. If you are looking for
oxytocin to 'chill', cannabis can do that.

Right, anandamide. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anandamide

Maybe cannabinoid analogs, too. See e.g.:

Hi Jason, I am a Natural Health Scientist, since Decmeber last year I have been working on the Pituitary gland to get it back to health. I am having some wonderful results. With all my testing and experiments, it all came down to one thing - decongestion of the Pituitary gland. Oxytocin High levels and low levels are caused by the congestion, so to decongest, that is what I am looking into now and to see if the Oxytocin levels come back to normal. This is what I have discovered, a very very simple thing (after looking at all the major complicated things and ruling them out) 1/32 of a measured teaspoon of Lemongrass herb powdered, once a day for 4 days only. Yes this is just a little tiny bit but it takes just the right amount of anything to do a job in the body, too much or too little will never accomplish anything - 17 years experience.

Hi Jason! I know this reply is coming late, but hopefully it can still help you or others.

I have similar issues to you, plus genetic tests reveal diminished OXTR genes (oxytocin gene).

An herbal supplement called Maca is said to boost both dopamine and oxytocin. I know that when I take it, I feel amazing within days, with intense orgasms (an oxytocin function in women). It also lowers cortisol, which opposes oxytocin.

The amygdala is the emotional processing area of the brain, and low oxytocin can cause malfunction. The amygdala is also strongly linked to the olfactory system, so I began to research essential oils. Studies have shown that clary sage increases oxytocin by 37% after a month. Also jasmine oil is said to help.

And, a doctor can prescribe an oxytocin nasal spray to be used off-label for PTSD, Alexithymia, and Autism. The nasal spray is able to cross the brain-blood barrier, and I can personally vouch for its effectiveness. I use it when I socialize.

Good luck! And know that low oxytocin actually has a cognitive benefit (I'm a member of Mensa), hence your high IQ :)
