Ron Owens had someone from one of the major malware providers on his
show today. The guy was talking about how he was now using Ting as a
wireless carrier and how mediocre the coverage was. He must have been
talking about data coverage because I think Ting allows roaming onto
other CDMA networks which should eliminate most of the Sprint voice
coverage issues in remote areas (there are still issues in areas where
Sprint has a network but has poor coverage because the phone's PRL will
prevent use of other CDMA carriers in those areas).

Ting just seems like a really bad deal. When I look at what $30 buys on
Page Plus the same minutes/texts/data on Ting would be about $70. But
you do get LTE data on Ting while on Page Plus you're limited to 3G data.

I use Ting:

- no problems with Bay area voice coverage
- voice quality noticeably worse than Verizon; similar on a few handsets, so i think it's a network problem (config choice)
- Sprint 3G much slower than Verizon/AT&T/T-mobile; but since LTE became available not an issue (i've used Clearwire WiMax on Ting before)
- LTE is quite fast; i also use T-Mobile and Verizon 4G data, and they're all comparable speed-wise
- i pay $75 on average with 3 lines (~1500-2000 minutes, ~400-800 sms, ~500MB)

I can afford both T-Mobile and Ting service for less than i was paying Verizon.

With Pageplus i could not create a plan which would let me pool minutes/sms-es/data for 3 lines - i needed to
predict and track each month which line needs what mix. Also, i prefer post-paid/auto-paid plans.

p.s. I really like using unlocked Nexus 5 on Ting - not only you can use it on Ting on CDMA, it also works
perfectly when roaming internationally in GSM/HSDPA world (with another SIM card of course).

That's true, Ting makes more sense when you have multiple lines on the
same plan while Page Plus doesn't offer anything like that. I was just
looking at what 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, and 500MB of data cost on Page
Plus, $29.95 (actually 3-5% less than that) versus Ting which would be
about $70 with taxes and fees.

The big hassle on Page Plus these days is that not only do they not
offer LTE, you can't use any handset that has LTE without having it
reprogrammed. The iPhone 5 from StraightTalk works on Page Plus because
they've disabled 4G LTE.

I use an HTC Incredible 2 on Page Plus. I also have a T-Mobile SIM card
in there and can put in a foreign SIM when needed. But no W-CDMA or LTE
data when traveling.

C|Net's product reviews at SFgate.com have been total crap for years
now, too. Latest example I could find using SFGate's search:

Why do they still exist? They should belly-up and be done.

Because they don't want to pay the money to hire anyone that knows
anything and that can write intelligibly.

Just an FYI...

Ting just announced on Tuesday (Feb. 3) lower data rates, especially for
heavy data users.

That's an improvement. Now what costs $29.95 on Page Plus costs only $52
on Ting. Again, that's for a single user and Ting's value advantage
really only kicks in when you have multiple users on a single plan.

The Sprint "Framily" plan is pretty good if you can find seven people to
go in on it with you. $25 per month for 1GB of data plus unlimited talk
and text. Plus, unlike Ting or Page Plus, there is data roaming. At 1000
minutes, 500 texts, and 1GB of data per person Ting would still be 86ยข
per month per person less, but you get unlimited calls and texts so if
you went over the savings would go away. But the big advantage of Sprint
is off-network data roaming because Sprint doesn't have coverage in so
many places.
