there's heavy tearing and stuttering in high profile videos which requires
extra cpu/gpu processing

I'm in the same boat with all of these other commentors -- suddenly, about
a week ago, Youtube video playback under Chrome become choppy -- it's quite
maddening. Since this coincided with the Microsoft "SVCHOST" patch (I am
running XP), I blamed Microsoft and not Chrome for the problem, and posted
some comments to this effect on Bleepingcomputer, etc. But I have since
discovered -- like everyone else -- that Youtube playback continues to be
fine under Firefox!!!! So it does have something to do with Chrome (and
yes, I've dowloaded the latest Flash player, to no avail), and here's a
final hint -- at just about the time this problem surfaced, I also
discovered the Chrome "task monitor": could it be leaving a piece of itself
in memory, and periodically hogging the CPU? And one final, final clue:
the task monitor invokes very unreliably via the SHIFT+ESC sequence.

Also seeing this on the NHL video apps (in addition to YouTube). Tends to
go away if I make the window very small, but on full-screen video, it's
constant and frequent. I do not see unusual system load and other video
apps seem fine.

I use ATI video drivers on an AMD chip on Windows 7, perhaps this is
related, I've found some bugs with the ATI drivers in some similar things,
although changing driver versions don't seem to change the stuttering issue.

Melody do we have any local reproductions of this? I can show it to some
engineers if we can get traces.

This is happening to me too with a fresh Windows 8 x64 installation. I
would not expect choppy flash playback with these specs:

AMD Phenom II X6 @ 4ghz
32GB DDR3
Nvidia GTX 680
2x Kingston HyperX SSDs

Quite frankly, this latest Chrome update is the worst I've ever seen. I've
had all kinds of issues with the developer tools and other various
features. I'm seriously considering moving to another browser at this
point.

I think vasili's issue is different than us in here it must be related to
something else or caused by some other thing it is not happening on all
browsers at all only on chrome, most of the people here faced the same
issue about 2 weeks with same symptoms and same timeline, and it's clear
that recent chrome update caused it.

For me, the issue is isolated to the PepperFlash plugin. If I disable the
pepperflash plugin and install Flash seperately, videos playback properly.

This is happening to me too. I actually re-installed Windows 8.1 along with
Chrome and the issue persists. Firefox and IE are unaffected. I'm using a
AMD A4-4000 APU and tried Chrome stable and Chrome beta, both have the same
issue.

32.0.1700.76: Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky

Unable to reproduce the problem using the builds 32.0.1700.76 or the
current stable version of chrome 32.0.1700.107 on Linux and Mac machines.
All the flash videos on youtube plays absolutely fine without any
choppiness. I also tried playing multiple HD videos in parallel on chrome,
still could see the videos playing smoothly.

As mentioned in the comment#35, Can you please update your chrome to
current stable version and clear all the cookies and history data and then
retry to see if any choppiness persists among the videos. Please update the
bug if you still see the issue.

This is still an issue for me on Windows, running the latest Chrome stable
(32.0.1700.107). Disabling PepperFlash causes video to be smooth again but
causes other issues. This happens on ANY flash flash video, including live
streams, youtube, etc... clearing cache/cookies does nothing.

It is particularly noticeable for me when watching sporting events, such as
hockey, that involve a lot of camera pans, video is extremely choppy when
played back in Chrome via flash (the same stream looks fine in other
browsers & non-pepperflash)

Just tested this on my Mac, also running the latest Chrome (32.0.1700.107)

machine handy to test there, but there is definitely no issue on my Mac,
even 60 fps content played back in Flash is buttery smooth.

I found a temporary solution for the tearing issue that works for me atm.
Go to chrome://flags/ and enable Override software rendering list.

This works for me and got no tearing anymore with pepperflash.

My notebook is old, video onboard Intel 965.
This maybe help more:
Windows 7 - 32.0.1700.107 m - Flash Versión: 12.0.0.44 enables the 2 -
Widevine Content Decryption Module - Versión: 1.4.1.377 plugin (I think
this is important)
Enable Use hardware acceleration when available (advanced settings)

The problem I had was split video ap and down, how differents speeds up and
down, and the view how one webcam, look choppy, in YOUTUBE.- (I dont use
many flash)
Now the videos run OK.-

Some days before of solve the problem for one misconfiguration, in
automatic form, I Reset browser settings.- (but this no solve the problem)
After this I clear Cache (who no solve the problem) and Clear Cookies, and
with this I solve my problem!

If no solve the problem with clear Cookies trie also clear Cache.
And Reset browser settings:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en-419

Iam sure this solve the problem in Youtube, (I dont use many flash).

(for reproduce the problem maybe you need one old computer, video onboard,
and with one used Chrome)

Trie this:
1- Update Chrome chrome://chrome/
2- Clear "Cache" and "Cookies and Site Data"
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95582?hl=en&ref_topic=14666
3- Reboot

If this no help trie:

1- Update Chrome
chrome://chrome/
2- Reset browser settings:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en-419
3- Clear Cache and Cookies site data:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95582?hl=en&ref_topic=14666

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

#33 Enabling D3D11 has no effect on the choppiness for me.

#53 (originally number 35) clearing cache does nothing. CPU speed is not a
factor as this does not affect Firefox or IE. Also the CPU's mentioned here
including my own A4-4000 are capable of playing multiple 1080p Youtube
videos side by side in any other browser smoothly.

This is definately a Chromium/Flash issue. In fact the choppiness happens
when using HTML5 videos in chrome too. It's worse in 1080p and 720p but
it's also noticeable in 480p content.

Just wanted to confirm the above #54 comment by Matthew.
Any other issue or repeating the already mentioned useless workarounds are
only going to deviate and complicate this thread.
Things can only be fixed by Google and only if they try to fix their codes
or anything new that has been implemented with the chrome update that came
about 3 weeks ago.

Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

not solved.
for example, I just found this:

let it play in the background (I played it with HD on, don't know if it
matters) and load in a new tab, a "demanding" website like xda-developers.
at my machine (windows 8.1) the video gets stuck and playback stops for 1-2
seconds (you can hear it stops) on every action outside that youtube tab.
also the videos tend to chop and stutter when the flash window size is 720p
(not quality, but size).
finally, thanks for listening Google, but please don't test it (only) with
2 OS which barely holds 9% of the market, and don't test it with an Intel
i7 Extreme Edition with 64GB DDR3 and a graphic card that was released
yesterday :)

I'm having the same issues with choppy video using Chrome (latest build) on
windows XP. IE 8 & firefox have no issues.

Too bad because with XP, I can't update IE to a version past 8. Please fix
this ASAP. I mean, Google owns Youtube, and their own browser won't even
work properly with it. Come on Google!

Personally I see problems with playback choppiness only on HTML5 videos in
Chrome, and they are older than version 32, at least one version before
that. Flash videos play OK for me, both with Adobe and the Pepper plugin
version.
For people reporting problems, are you sure the videos play back in Flash
and not HTML5? I tested some of the examples posted here and I got the same
results, choppiness for HTML5, fine for Flash. I can see the difference
because I have click-to-play enabled, HTML5 videos are not blocked by this
and start playing immediately, while Flash is blocked until I load the
plugin.
I'm on Win7 32 bit.

In chrome plugins via advanced settings, privacy and manage plugins, if
Adobe flash player is listed twice, you want to disable the version that
resides in Chrome so that only the hardware windows version is used. This
seemed to fix it after searching for days. Hopefully it stays fixed as
jumpy video with out of sync pitty sound was doing my head in.

That's a workaround but not a fix :) (although I echo these findings as
stated earlier -- diasbling the pepperflash plugin causes video to playback
smoothly again, but I find issues with certain flash apps on websites when
using non-pepperflash in chrome for some reason)

Iam #35 most videos run ok, but with some videos the problem back again in
Chrome :( (in FF run OK), the video:

Other videos run ok, so no are all the videos (at least for me):

Maybe videos with high rate frames for seconds, with many sound and change
images use many resources.
I thought the cookies solved this but not, (maybe with some videos).

I disable the pepflash and now look good.
First I disable the Adobe without effect.

Trie to use that video for reproduce the problem, in one old notebook maybe
is better. My CPU in Chrome and FF go to 92 ~ 100%.

I think now Youtube use more resources.
If is one problem of resources in chrome, each user will have different
problems.
I just trie to help Google for solve the problem, be nice.

The fix is disable the Pepflash. chrome://plugins/

Disabling pepflash does make it smoother but embedded YouTube videos don't
work at all. This wasn't an issue before I updated to adobe flash 12. Also
I have to force chrome to use flash instead of html5 with a plugin.

Not isolated to AMD APUs. I still get extremely choppy video on Intel

ihf: IIRC, the issue was that the audio indicator was refreshing way too
much, causing significant CPU utilization and compositing issues with
excessive tab UI redraws. However, that was resolved last year. It mostly
impacted Chrome OS on Daisy.

Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

The problem is only with pepflash, the stardard flash run ok.
For use pepflash you need also use html5.
Something in pepflash and html5 make the CPU go to 100%.
With one NVIDIA you dont will reproduce this problem, you need one notebook
with onboard video ;)

Originally #13. I've disabled, The Chrome Flash Drive version and
enabled Adobe version. This was a workaround is from a along time ago
and it worked at that time. But not this time.

I have tried everything suggested. The only thing that made any difference
was when I cleared the cache and browsing history. But it was only
partially helped. Since I did that occasionally YouTube audio is good, but
I lose the visual, but for the most [part the audio remains messed up.
However, I did discover that the audio for YouTube is better as long as I
open a new tab after I start the video...so you can't watch it. Also if,
while listening and in a new tab, if I try an do anything else...even move
the mouse the audio starts to break up for the duration of the movement of
the mouse.

The NPAPI Flash from adobe also use many CPU in youtube and chrome.
I disable pepflash and the CPU go to 100% ~ 94 % with HTML5 enabled.-
In FireFox is the same, but if I use html5, down from 100% to 74% CPU, and
look better.
If I pause the video the CPU down to 20%. If I leave the tab down to 0.5 ~
12
So the problem no is only in Chrome, I think, Is flash 12 use many CPU.
I hope this help.

I write yesterday, In firefox, only in HD 720 I have the same problem, in
480 is ok but the view no is so good.
Maybe with flash 13 they can solve this.
Or you can discontinue the use of flash in youtube.
The good thing about google is that it is light and clear, and you can
acces faster with one old PC.
That is the advantage of Google, if flash make many problems, trie to
discontinue the use of it in google please. That will be also good for the

video, especially full screen, whether it be in youtube or other video

On both I have issues loading certain web pages using chrome.

present in other video content on the internet sites. On IE or FF video
content loading OK.

Started with me in early feb, am now using ff for youtube viewing as chrome
is worthless at this point for that task. I have found that by disabling
the the flash plugins on chrome back and forth will fix problem temporarily
but the high cpu usage will return after awhile. So long as i keep changing
what flash plugins i have enabled/disabled every 15-20 min i can watch
youtube vids just fine. What's strange is i can disable both the
pepperflash (PPAPI) and the macromed (NPAPI) and still watch flash embedded
vids. Well for about 15-20 min for the choppy stuff sets back in.

Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky

For me, the problem started about 1-2 weeks ago.

I've tried everything from disabling Flash pepper player, changing the
settings by disabling hardware acceleration, changing storage to
unlimited, requesting youtube to use only HTML5 player to play videos and
even installing TamperMonkey with scripts to try to force Youtube to use
HTML5 player instead of Adobe Flash player - still the problem persists.
Yes, I've even cleared my cache and cookies.

The thing is I realized the videos load better using the HTML5 player but
after say 30 secs to a minute, youtube would switch it back to using Adobe
Flash player and then it gets really choppy. Both my Chrome and Flash are
updated so I really don't know how this problem can be fixed.

Hi!

This phenomenon happened to me as well. First time about half a year ago. I
couldn't solve this problem then so I started to use Internet Explorer.
Then I bought a new laptop and chrome was running smoothly. After a while
- today - this happened to me again. Online videos started to glitch and
became choppy.

I did the following steps:
1. I pressed ctrl+shift+delete
2. tag all the boxes in "clear browsing data" window then
choose "Obliterate the following items from: the past day". cause that's
when the problem started and it worked =D

Hope that google will fix this issue once for all cause its been actual for
waaaaaaaay to long time =(

I have windows 8

Hope this helps! Good luck.

All four of my antiquated (2.1 mhz or less) computers now play video
flawlessly. I loaded ubuntu. I installed chrome, but found I could
accessorize firefox to do everything chrome does and it comes as the
default browser. The software center (apps store) is impressive and you
just click to install or remove programs.

I tried firefox before leaving xp but videos still stuttered even with
html5. My win7 pc has worked fine, so I left it alone. And ubuntu is free!

@rene.chaddock: Thanks for the info.

Is anyone watching this bug familiar with using Process Explorer to elevate
priorities? If so, it'd be great if you can test the following out and
report back here.

1) Find a video you like and close all other tabs but that one.
2) Open "Tools -> Task Manager" and identify the Process ID values for
the "Browser" process and the tab that's playing your video.
3) Start playback and do something you know will cause glitches. Verify
glitching occurs.
4) Open Process Explorer and set the priorities for the above two processes
to "Above Normal"
5) Repeat step 3) and see if the glitching is improved.

If you have additional time, please try combinations of step #4 (i.e.,
elevate just the browser process and see if glitching occurs, elevate just
the tab process and see if glitching occurs).

If you could also note a ballpark CPU load when you see this issue that
would be awesome.

Thanks in advance for your help!

fixes your glitching issue?

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

I have experienced this problem so severely that it pushed me to move to
Firefox on my less powerful machines (soon to be all my machines).

Just to be clear, its nothing to do with the priority as that can't
possibly help when the CPU is maxed out entirely. For example, on a quad
core bay trail CPU as in my tablet or my NUC, any attempt to playback flash
video from twitch.tv on Chrome is a slideshow at ~10 fps. The cpu is loaded
to 100% according to the Windows 8.1 task manager.

I will re-install chrome to try out
the "--ppapi-flash-args=enable_low_latency_audio=0" setting, but I am not
expecting much. PPAPI simply has too much overhead to bother with it. I
applaud the idea of sandboxing the plugin, but the implementation is pure
unadulterated garbage.

For me, it is exactly the same since several major releases on Linux.

Have a look @ http://www.spacetelescope.org/videos/heic1406a/ which plays
smoothly w/ Firefox and NPAPI-Flash while it it is choppy w/ Pepper-Flash.

A few things I tried w/o any positive effect:

* --ppapi-flash-args=enable_low_latency_audio=0
* turning off compositing w/ the window manager
* override software rendering list on/off
* flash hw accel on/off

Playing each and every HTML5 video (YouTube, Vimeo-- all in HD), works
flawlessly and is smooth as butter. But as soon as Pepper-Flash enters the
picture (metaphorically speaking), the tide turns.

It almost looks like the deinterlacing or ordering of the frames is screwed
up since the jerkiness seems to come from a sudden jump back one or two
frames. Or at least that is what it looks like to the naked eye.

I also tried the FPS counter, which showed 25fps w/ the above video, with
brief spikes to 24.x and 26.x. The system was idle while testing.

I tested w/ Chromium 35.0.1916.114 on a x86_64 Gentoo system (Core i7 860,
NVIDIA GF100-based card w/ drivers 337.12, KDE 4.13.1 [compositing on]).

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

The problem I have is youtube and other videos and I think Pandora as well
doing a stuttering when I'm doing ANYTHING. It's not my internet connection
but when I'm doing anything on Google Chrome, I experience large amount of
stuttering from my music videos while doing anything else. Even if Youtube
is the only tab open and I'm doing something on Windows itself. The best
way I can describe it is
*Musicmusicmusic~~BUZZZZZ~~musicmusic* and it happens whenever anything
does anything, if a tab is loading new content, if something opens. Just
whatever. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Chrome as well
as a few other suggestions like enabling that d3d11 and disabling the

Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

@ #131 and #132

My system:
Fedora 20
Chrome v. 35.0.1916.153
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
Graphics Card: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Steps:
As only tab open, go to

As others have mentioned, audio is fine but video is incredibly choppy.
Changed PID priority of browser and youtube processes to "Very High,"
glitch persists.
PID priority "Very High" of just browser: glitch persists
PID priority "Very High" of just youtube tab: glitch persists
Glitches persist when running chrome
with "--ppapi-flash-args=enable_low_latency_audio=0".

Approximate CPU load when glitching: 150-180% (I only have two processors;
this is enough to seriously lag my computer)

It's interesting to note that just switching chrome to my active window
seems to spike the CPU load to 150-180% for ~7 seconds even when the video
is not playing.

Only open tab is a flash video: CPU spike occurs
Only open tab is not a flash video: no CPU spike
Only open tab is a flash game: no CPU spike
Two tabs, focused tab is flash video: CPU spike occurs
Two tabs, focused tab is not a flash video: no CPU spike

Could not reproduce #138; PID priority stays on "Very High" regardless of
opening/closing tabs. Toggling priority of youtube tab also doesn't seem
to impact glitching.

I have this same issue -- have for the past couple of weeks, I'd say --
when watching not only YouTube but just about any video on Chrome. I even
encountered the issue when I tried playing a DVD through Windows Media
Player, so maybe the issue isn't just Chrome-based (for me, anyway). I
haven't tried a cross-comparison between Chrome and a different web
browser, but that's because, in general, I've found Chrome to be a better
browser than IE and Firefox. Please fix this issue! While it's not
impossible to sit through videos with this issue, it is very distracting
and frustrating.

I have a test Chromebook which was off line for a couple of months. I
just wiped it and reloaed everything where it was upgraded to the following
version:
Google Chrome Version 37.0.2062.119
Platform Version 5978.80.0 (Official Build) stable-channel daisy
Firmware Version Google_Snow.2695.117.0
I am now experiencing the choppy audio playback with simple radio stream.
Never had this issue before. It starts fine, but it seems once the buffer
is full, it starts playing choppy.

Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

Just as a summary from the output: Win7 SP1, Newest Chrome, Newest NVIDIA
driver, 1080p screen, 4GB memory. GeForce 8400GS GPU which was sold with 3
different chips, not sure which one. DXVA claims hardware decode support.
May or may not be true (and the OS do it in software). Running the desktop
compositor (Aero Glass), which costs extra cycles.

Depending on which chip is in the 8400GS and which resolution video this
might be quite borderline performance wise. But then again you say that
there are no problems with plugins. Maybe the GPU team knows more?

After playing a few Flash videos that show the problem I wonder if this
shows any error counts shown here:
chrome://histograms/Media.PepperVideo

Alternatively disable Aero Glass which should free up performance and see
if there still are problems

I'm been having the same choppiness as described in this thread, with both
HTML5 and Flash videos.

Also running on an 8400GS with latest drivers, 4GB memory, Win7 Pro.

I know the 8400GS is slow, but video playback is fine in other browsers.
Chrome actually used to be the best at rendering video, but the choppiness
started a couple months ago for me (Chrome 35 stable, I think) - it wasn't
due to any driver updates.

I'd expect Google Chrome to have the smoothest youtube playback, but it is
not !! Could you guys please make these videos to use hardware
acceleration. I know if not for DXVA, videos play choppy on my computer. So
I believe youtube videos are not hardware accelerated and use only the CPU.

Flash Video (Youtube) is "Choppy" & Jerky
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337606

I think I'm having the same problem as other people. just to be clear,
when I say 'jerking', I mean that all video, on any site, is kind of acting
like it's on some kind of bungee cord, twitching slightly forward and back
by milliseconds during playback. The audio is not affected, but after a bit
it generally becomes lagged.

This is happening for 95% of all videos played in Chrome. I have disabled
all plugins except for flash. It shows 2 versions of flash, so I've
disabled them one at a time, but it makes no difference.

And here's the thing - it doesn't happen in Incognito mode. Could it be an
extension, like Adblock or some such?
