Holy shit! How did the Crew Cuts ever make a tolerable "Sh-Boom"?

I remember having the Four Fellows 45.

They didn't. Their "Sh-Boom" is fucking disgraceful.

This Turtles version from 1955 is RCA 47-6356 and the Elvis RCA
reissue (up to that point available on Sun) is just ONE number later
being 47-6357.

As far as the Turtles are concerned I prefer "Happy Together" :)

Three years earlier these guys covered this one. The original is not
too hot IMO but I'm sure Mike & Jerry would agree that it's a positive
masterpiece compared to this one.

Of course we all had to wait a couple of years for Elvis to finally
nail the song!

Anyone out there got the *other* American cover of this?

It's the 1953 version by Ike Carpenter & His Orchestra recorded for
Decca with vocal by Effie Smith.

I never heard it but Effie had a real good record in 1956 with her
memorably titled "Champagne Mind (With A Soda Water Income)"

For those that haven't heard it---here 'tis

I still have vivid memories of the age of covers so I know how really
bad they could be. The ones you dug up were even worse. Okay, mildly
amusing for a few seconds, but also kind of pointless to hear, which is
what I meant by "inane."

Incidentally the Cleftones original came out here (much later than USA
in September 1956) on UK Columbia as part of one of the greatest

For this one it's which version is best.

I prefer the Voices version although the Cardinals version is good too. But there's a third version that some of you may like best.

The last one came out several months after the others---and Clyde is

I like the Perryman best, but I think you're not quite grasping what this thread is about. It's a sarcastic "Which version is better" as a way to showcase horrendous lesser known covers from our era, like that Gadabouts disaster. It's not to compare actual decent to great versions of the same song, which has been done here many times already over the years.

You should have made this clearer at the outset. The header just says
"WHICH VERSION IS BETTER?".

And IIRC you started with "I Sit In My Window" where----yes the Crew
Cuts cover lives up to the groups usual standard in being pretty
"horrendous"----but on a song where I dislike the original too (and
the other Gavin cover) so the premise you suggest doesn't quite work

I'm simply claiming that from my point of view this is not a very good
example of what you're saying you're trying to show here because I
don't like the song at all even in the original version.

For me the comparison clearly doesn't work the way you're
advocating---as say the galactically huge divide between the Richard
and Boone "Tutti Frutti" or "Long Tall Sally" do

Eh?

You posted the Billy Wiilliams cover back in May.

I said this :-
Post by SavoyBG
This Billy Williams cover is indeed pathetic but it was the first
record I ever had of the song
I'd heard Smiley's great original of "Shame Shame Shame" not long
before via an older r&r/r&b fan of my aquaintance (and then by TV
showings of "Baby Doll" the movie in which it features) but I did'nt
have the super rare UK London single of it.
I did however come across the Williams version on UK Coral in some
London junk shop for pennies and was not impressed at all.
It was into the 70's before I finally added Smiley's original 45 to my
collection thanks to my first visit with Val Shively.
I've still yet to hear the 1956 Cougar Johnson record of
"Shame,Shame,Shame" on Vik (I don't even know if its the same song!!)

(Note to Ken Whiton : don't go rushing to 45cat....the # is missing)

Of course the song itself is pure teen dreck gibberish but somehow I
always kinda liked the Billy & Lillie version. Go figure

Multiple releases titled "La Dee Dah" in the years following the Rusty
& Bonnie and Jackie Dennis covers of Billy & Lillie but all seem to be
different songs.

There's a curious release in 1964 by the Hummingbirds that lists "La
Dee Dah" (Slay-Crewe) on the label but actually plays (correctly)
their version of the Dale Hawkins song "La-Do-Dada"

I don't think this was posted yet. Anyway, it could be a new low in terrible white covers of black R&B / Rock and Roll.

Incredibly, this one is actually pretty good. On Coral, a 1956 cover of a classic hit.

Pretty good indeed, though you can hear old Hoagy chafing at the sings
perfect simplicity by adding grace notes to the guitar lines and new
vocal pitches to the various stanzas. Interesting find.

Well, it's pretty bad, but I don't thing it'd crack the top 5 . Or would
that be bottom 5 ?

It did get only 5 likes. I guess the 3 sisters and the bass singer, and
that deaf guy.

The only saving grace is that in one of the pictures, they're at least
holding their dresses up a little bit. For those of you that like knees,
you could fast forward to 1:55.

An instrumental version of one of the biggest rock and roll hits of the 50s. It's not bad, an adult big band style similar to "Bandstand Boogie."

D'rone was a jazzy night club singer who made a few pop records. We
saw him over here on the Como TV show where he did "Strawberry Blonde"
which became a UK #14 hit in early 1961.

His cover of Bobby Helms' "My Special Angel" was his first record in
1957. I detest the song in any version but D'rone's dire version isn't
the very worst out there----the UK surely holds the honor there

Can't agree there. The Helms is an 8 for me and is #176 on my 1957 list. Diane is with you though, she hates the Helms record.

It's depressing to me that your financial circumstances have recently forced you to part with all those records that you have cherished since you bought them from your local record store with your allowance. Perhaps we in the group could take up a collection so you don't have to totally destroy your childhood memories.

Don't think I ever heard this.Never released here

I see the songwriting credit here goes to the Bihari Brothers (!)

I can imagine how wonderful it sounds (NOT!) but nevertheless do you
