And the winner is....

....um...does the family of that guy know he didn't win? Had to google him. Arthur Gunn. First when he's announced in the top two, the family starts shooting confetti. Then when Just Sam is announced as the winner, the family of Arthur Gunn comes running with champagne bottles, jumping up and down, and appearing to be congratulating him. Then Just Sam, who is all by herself, says a few words and then on to the We Are The World performance. Weird. They could have done some digital confetti for her. Something. Anything.

Oh well. Congrats to Just Sam!

I was surprised Just Sam won, but very happy about it. Arthur Gunn seemed to have it
sewn up judging by most of the polls I saw. Although current conditions certainly
aren't fertile ground for starting entertainment career building, we'll see if she
can do better than the other winners (who?) over the past few years.

I was happy that Jonny didn't win. I was dreading yet another
boring milquetoast WGWG (in his case WGWP) winner who would
quickly fade into oblivion. In fact, I had an "anybody but
Jonny" attitude. And ironically I had set up the Idol app on my
sister's smart phone for her.... and yep, she gave all her votes
to Jonny lol. I think she's been taken over by Judy Haffner's
spirit.

Jonny will be OK even if he didn't win. He'll be able to find work as long as there
are cocktail lounges and cruise ships.

Yeah, I felt really bad for Just Sam, by herself when she won.
But I'm really happy that a regular person with tremendous
natural talent won. This is what American Idol is all about.

BTW I'm having to post from a crappy cell phone Newsgroup app, for
some reason my usually dependable Forte Agent newsgroup reader
that I've been using for years suddenly won't download message
bodies. Weird

Do you have any idea what's wrong with Agent? I'm using version 4.2 with Eternal
September and it's working perfectly. Maybe a file got messed up. Have you tried
reinstalling it over your existing copy?

I've had the free version for years now and have kept it from updating
to avoid the marketing.
But having said that, I just now figured out what my issue was! I had
two news servers set up, eternal-september and albsani as a backup for
when e-s was down. When I checked for new messages Agent would check
both of those servers. Apparently the albsani server has been down
for several days and Agent was hanging up when it tried to download
the message bodies -- even though I had it set to check
eternal-september first. I disabled albasani and voila! Everything
is working fine again using just eternal-september. Just one of those
weird things that I'll never understand I guess, but I'm just happy
it's working again. It was such a pain trying to type out newsgroup
messages on my phone's NG app.

Glad to hear you got it worked out. That old version of Agent is one of the most
reliable programs on my PC.

Thunderbird still supports Usenet newsgroups and is very straightforward to use.

I just finished watching the show this morning, I thought the same thing about "Poor Gunn" when his family was in full celebration mode when he only made it to the final 2. As soon Ryan said and the winner is "Just Sam" I was "Just Pissed" I shut my TV off so thanks for giving me the play-by-play of what went down after I left, maybe now I'll go back and watch it. Now that she won, it will be VERY interesting to see how she how her life goes now, will she get rid of the BIG ghetto neck tattoo? will she end up in trouble with the law? or does she simply "Just go away" like other A.I. winners that we hardly ever hear about?

Unfortunately, likely the latter. The last Idol winner who has seen any real success
is P2 from S11, but his career hasn't been all that stellar since his coronation
single "Home" faded. When you stop to think about it, how many winners are on the A
or B list now? Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are. Scotty McCreery is doing
well. Fantasia has seen good success, but not so much currently. I still hear
something of Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and David Cook occasionally, but they are
about C list at best. Some who didn't win are eclipsing many of the winners. Who
knows? That could be a result of this season. Four other finalists had about the
same amount of exposure as Just Sam.

Where is the rant about Dillon James's bigger and more obtrusive
tattoos? Dillon James, the recently reformed hard core drug addict. I
know he's white and obviously comes from a well-to-do family while Sam
comes from a poor black home, raised by her grandmother without all
the maerial advantages that Dillon had. But Sam is equally
well-spoken and has clearly been raised by her religious grandmother
to have respect and manners. What makes her "ghetto" and not Dillon
James other than the color of her skin?

Sorry LA, but IMO this is just plain racist.

The main thing that turned me off about "Just Scam" from the very start was her over the top drama from 1 day when she needed a box of money next to her when she sang at the audition, then came Hollywood week and she was at it again with MORE drama crying about her voice issues, she played the viewers from the very start. To her credit she did tone it down after Hawaii week but by then I was already on to her scam as far as Dillon goes yes his tattoos are ghetto too, but I gave him a free pass NOT because he is white but because he didn't cause drama during/around the show, like she did. Had Dillon faked a drug over dose or something else along that line, yes I would have been on him too.
This season of A.I. will forever be remembered as the forgotten season so it wouldn't surprise me if TPTB got in there and rigged it for Sam to win so that nobody can come back later and say nobody that looks like Sam will ever win A.I.
one last thing...
I couldn't help but think, maybe it's a good thing Judy has already passed away because if she would have seen Sam win that would have killed Judy for sure.

Backstories are most often pushed and even blown way out of proportion by Idol. I
don't fault any of the contestants nearly as much as I do the producers who milk
these situations for every real and manufactured drop they can get out of them. As
for Just Sam and her tip box, how do you think all the judges, especially Katy, had
money ready to put in it? The whole thing was clearly prearranged and not by the
contestant, who very likely had no choice in the matter. They do what they are told
to do. If you are so anxious to blame somebody, it's only fair to put that blame on
those who actually engineered the "crimes."

Fair point, I've been watching A.I. since season 1 so I know how things work when the cameras are not rolling, having said that did they also tinker with her voice so it would go south during Hollywood week too, causing her to cry a river? I'm willing to give anyone a free pass when something happens ONCE but when it keeps on happening to the same person that's when I wave a red flag. Lets see how it all plays out but I will tell you the minute I see or hear about a negative story that comes out about her AFTER winning A.I. be prepared for me to remind you of your post coming to her defense. A wise man once said: "I may not know that person but I know that person" Let's see how it all plays out.
