Just thought I'd post a wee message to see how it goes. I am already a
convert to Firefox as my browser but I'm trying out Thunderbird
(alongside OE6).
Who else is abandoning Mircosoft ?
Cheers

aplogies if this comes across as HTML, as I haven't worked everything
out yet.

Quite a long while ago for me :-)

It's fine, Mozilla family does tend to default to plain text for
newsgroups.

However, other groups might have been more appropriate.

Well yes and no. I did put an OT but I have been posting in this group for
nearly 5 years on and off and have got to know the regulars and I know for a
fact that some of them use the likes of Opera, so I was just interested to
find out about their e-mail clients.

'Regulars'!

I have 16 articles stored for the last month, hardly busy here. Your
point is taken though.

Opera as well :) It really is fast.

I was considering Mozilla, but the large download put me off. Once the
next Opera is out of beta I'll not have to open IE again, as it's adding
support for gmail.

All the way to Nixville ;) although I find the mozilla set of tools
slightly to slow, and I dont like the default theming.

I don't think that it too OT. BC is a long time poster here, he has been
posting for longer that I've been reading - over 4 years so he knows how
OT is acceptable to the regulars here...

OT is either OT or it isnt and the length of time a user has been
posting to a particular newsgroup has nothing to do with it .

However , It is quite common for people to invent usenet rules if it
suits them .

Actually, I was offering genuine advice at the time. Knowing how quiet
the group has been I was suggesting posting to a more appropriate group
so that the OP might get better response to the enquiry.

Thunderbird's a decent mail client IMO, but it's awful for Usenet. I
still use Gravity for that.

I downloaded it to use as my IE alternative, and I find it very lacking
after being used to all the extra features Opera has to offer.

I've just installed anew WinXP machine at my parent's house. The
Procedure went something like this:

1] Install AVG anti-virus
2] Install ZoneAlarm Firewall
3] UNINSTALL Outlook Express
4] Install Mozilla Thunderbird
5] Install Mozille Firefox, and set as default browser
6] Connect to the internet

I think I got it in the right order. I told my parents that I wouldn't
be doing (6) until (1)-(5) had been satisfactorily completed ;-)

With any luck, their new machine may survive more than 20 minutes (see
<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/19/infected_in20_minutes/>) before
it gets a nasty infection....

Maybe not relevant to Normski's new computer (tell him and your mother
I said "Hi", by the way), but I'd include "Moving the user shell
folders to a partition other than the system drive" somewhere in that
list. Unfortunately it's a bitch, and took me something like 8 hours.
Of course I could probably do it in 5 minutes now I know where it's
hidden...

What are the extra features ? Would it be like using 10% of them 90% of the
time or using 90% just 10% of the time ? What I like about Firefox (I'm
still unsure about Thunderbird and I'm waiting for Joe 90 to come out) is
the sheer speed. Everything just seems to happen quicker than OE6. Plus you
can change the themes (although that's a minor point).
I used to use Opera but than it's Java implementation stuffed my machine up
although probably I installed it wrongly.

Well, I have my browser, mail and news in a 4MB download, as opposed to
just the browser in a 4mb download, then another 5.4 for the email client,
plus having to download extensions jsut to replicate functions already
available in Opera eg customiseable pop-up blocking, mouse gestures, IRC,
re-open closed pages, disabling plugins with two clicks, customiseable
layout of the browser, ability to change both themes and color schemes of
those themes.

With regards to java, if you already have it on your machine, then you
don't need the java version of Opera. I will be sticking with Mozilla, but
I really can't see me staying when it appears to offer a lot less than I
am already used to.
