A year ago, I asked debian-user about favourite applications. The big
winners in that thread were GIMP, Firefox, K3b, gThumb, and
Thunderbird. I would like to start it again, and I would like those
who are get bored by this to please pardon me.

Well.... I use Debian (and Linux) exclusively in a headless server
environment, so
very few on the list make it into my favorite application list, with the
exception

Pine is non-free, and I wanted to restrict the list to FLOSS; but it's
okay since including non-free ensures that debian-user is more

Ok, I don't use Debian, but my girlfriend does, on my recommendation,

alternate between the Firefox and Epiphany.

I can't say Bash is my favourite shell because it's the default, and I
never tried anything else. Nevertheless I do greatly honour it, same
as I do Linux, GCC, Xorg, and GLibC. None of these pieces are
romantic, yet are all truly essential for any GNU/Linux system. I
consider them the most important pieces of FLOSS.

It's fine to include the shell as well, even though one won't normally
call it an application -- It's more of an essential system component.

Ah, I see now. I should have noticed that you had Linux in that
group, but I overlooked it. I think that may have tipped me off to
what you had in mind. In that case, I would essentially agree with

I specifically recommend thunar and xfce4-terminal, as both of them are
faster than their Gnome counterparts and have a few features I really

Hmm, lftp does sftp too?!? It's been a long time since I've used it,
but it looks like I'll have to check it out again (the standard sftp
client is decent, but a bit bare-bones for interactive use).

[I'm finding little poll very useful, seeing what cool programs others
use which I may have missed!]

Hmm, lftp does sftp too?!? It's been a long time since I've used it,
but it looks like I'll have to check it out again (the standard sftp
client is decent, but a bit bare-bones for interactive use).

Yes, it's a really nice client. And finally you can resume that 1GB
upload to a friend's machine via a DSL uplink that's likely to be
terminated in the meantime.

Yeah, I used to use abiword back in the day, but it was always

oowriter is indeed very bloated, and also used to be kind of flaky
(never as bad as abiword in my experience though), but it seems pretty
good these days. I suppose abiword has probably improved as well, so I
should at least check it out, but I'm pretty put off by my previous
experiences with it.

I have had this same experience. I can recall some time back and
everyone seemed to be raving about abiword and its meagre footprint.
I couldn't really use it though as it would crash about three minutes
into every document I would work on. And not when doing something
really, but just inputting text. Very flaky indeed. I wonder if it
has improved since. I may have to try it just to see.

KDE has 3 (that I know of) text editors: Kate (my favorite and my IDE
for years, since all I needed was the text editor and a console),
KWrite, and KWord.

apt-cache search KWrite

shows only 2 packages, one of which is Kate, but it says, "Kate is a
multi document editor, based on a rewritten version of the kwrite
editing widget of KDE." and also says, "This package is part of KDE,
and a component of the KDE base module."

My workstation runs Kubuntu and KWrite was installed with the default
and KWrite has shown up before when I've added KDE to a system, so I
suspect it is included in the KDE base.

the best by far. I even got a M$ user to change to Linux just because

FOSS = Free/Open Source Software
FLOSS = Free/Libre/Open Source Software
(Libre as in the French pronunciation and meaning)

So, yes, you're missing something. Even the /. crowd has been using the
terms FOSS and FLOSS (or F/LOSS) for over a year.

There are many pieces of software which I've tried out (e.g. when they
show up as new packages in debian's package list), and been very
impressed by, but simply not had the need to use.

For instance, libfltk is a very elegant GUI toolkit -- which I know from
reading the docs and playing around with simple example programs -- but
I really don't do any GUI programming these days. The next time I _do_
need to make a GUI, of course, libfltk will be one of the first things I
try (but who knows when that will be... no time... no time... :-).

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, I don't recall seeing any sources.
It probably is not free, and I will retract that one and just leave
nethack. Too bad though, as I enjoy ADOM a bit more.

Sound like a brilliant idea. I just don't have an idea how it would be
implemented, except that there should be provision for names of real
binaries, instead of names of debian binaries, e.g. one should be able
to mention a love for top instead of being forced to choose procps,
since one would only be exposed to the top binary, or find it to be
the only interesting binary in the procps package.
The voters in this list did do this, disregarding exceptions where
several chose apt instead of apt-get as favourite 'package manager',
for example.
There should probably be a vote on what categories should be
considered, instead of using Debian's menu entries, which doesn't look
suitable at all.
The ability to vote would be nice, just so that we are not limited by
bug reports on what direction Debian is taking. A lot of us enjoy
working with Debian so much that we feel a part of it, and this would
make this relationship a bit warmer...
