What's your favourite FLOSS?

Hi,
A year ago, I asked debian-user about favourite applications. The big
winners in that thread were GIMP, Firefox, K3b, gThumb, and
Thunderbird. I would like to start it again, and I would like those
who are get bored by this to please pardon me.

Here goes my new list (If you don't use certain things, please leave
the brackets blank like I did for audio editor, instead of leaving
them occupied with previous entries; this is to make the counting more
accurate):

* audio editor [ ]
* audio player [ quodlibet ]
* cd-ripper [ sound-juicer ]
* Desktop Environment [ GNOME ]
* DBMS [ ]
* development [ Python, GTK+ ]
* disc burner [ K3b ]
* e-mail client [ (none) - I use GMail ]
* file manager [ nautilus ]
* finance [ gnucash ]
* ftp [ ]
* image editor [ ]
* image viewer [ gthumb ]
* instant messenger [ ]
* mathematics [ octave ]
* misc utilities [ sudo, grep, dpkg-www, lsof, top, uptimed, sloccount, wget ]
* p2p [ ]
* package manager [ aptitude ]
* pdf-reader [ evince ]
* spreadsheet [ gnumeric ]
* tag editor [ ex-falso ]
* terminal emulator [ gnome-terminal ]
* text editor [ gedit, nano ]
* 3D animation [ blender ]
* video player [ ]
* web browser [ epiphany ]
* word-processor [ abiword ]
* (unreleased) [ GNU Hurd ]
* (great honours) [ GCC, GLibC, Linux, Bash, Xorg ]

note: you don't have to be a user of an application in order like it ;-)

Well.... I use Debian (and Linux) exclusively in a headless server
environment, so
very few on the list make it into my favorite application list, with the
exception
Post by Tshepang Lekhonkhobe
* DBMS [ ] MySQL (though it would probably be PostGreSQL if I ever had
the time to migrate.
* development [ Python, GTK+ ] PHP
* e-mail client [ (none) - I use GMail ] Pine via terminal, otherwise
SeaMonkey remotely
* file manager [ nautilus ] bash
* ftp [ ] default ftp
*misc utilities [ sudo, grep, dpkg-www, lsof, top, uptimed, sloccount,
wget ] top
* package manager [ aptitude ] apt
* text editor [ gedit, nano ] pico, pine
Then, of course there's:

* web server: Apache
* web calendar: WebCalendar

Pine is non-free, and I wanted to restrict the list to FLOSS; but it's
okay since including non-free ensures that debian-user is more
properly represented.

Pico is also non-free...

Ok, I don't use Debian, but my girlfriend does, on my recommendation,
so I can reply for her since I do most of the sysadmin stuff on her
machine...

What do you mean? Some web sites cause firefox to crap out.
Others cause epiphany to crap out.
She uses the one which doesn't crap out.

Incidentally, you put more than one in some of *your* boxes
as well.

This is acceptable. I alternate between nano and gedit, for example.

I can't say Bash is my favourite shell because it's the default, and I
never tried anything else. Nevertheless I do greatly honour it, same
as I do Linux, GCC, Xorg, and GLibC. None of these pieces are
romantic, yet are all truly essential for any GNU/Linux system. I
consider them the most important pieces of FLOSS.

It's fine to include the shell as well, even though one won't normally
call it an application -- It's more of an essential system component.

Ah, I see now. I should have noticed that you had Linux in that
group, but I overlooked it. I think that may have tipped me off to
what you had in mind. In that case, I would essentially agree with
your list in that category.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that

However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.

Hmm, lftp does sftp too?!? It's been a long time since I've used it,
but it looks like I'll have to check it out again (the standard sftp
client is decent, but a bit bare-bones for interactive use).

Yes, it's a really nice client. And finally you can resume that 1GB
upload to a friend's machine via a DSL uplink that's likely to be
terminated in the meantime.

Oh, add "ssh" to "misc utilities" too:

It's such a fundamental part of daily use, I hardly notice it any more!

Yeah, I used to use abiword back in the day, but it was always
_horribly_ flaky -- it crashed a lot, even on simple documents, and
seemed to randomly reformat text in odd ways based on the phase of the
moon.

oowriter is indeed very bloated, and also used to be kind of flaky
(never as bad as abiword in my experience though), but it seems pretty
good these days. I suppose abiword has probably improved as well, so I
should at least check it out, but I'm pretty put off by my previous
experiences with it.

I have had this same experience. I can recall some time back and
everyone seemed to be raving about abiword and its meagre footprint.
I couldn't really use it though as it would crash about three minutes
into every document I would work on. And not when doing something
really, but just inputting text. Very flaky indeed. I wonder if it
has improved since. I may have to try it just to see.

Probably xv, by John Bradley, which is not free software and, as far as
I know, not packaged or packageable by Debbian.

There's also a new thing called XV -- an X extension for video.

* word-processor [ Kwrite, Kword ]
Do you mean Kate when you mention Kwrite? I searched Debian and

KDE has 3 (that I know of) text editors: Kate (my favorite and my IDE
for years, since all I needed was the text editor and a console),
KWrite, and KWord.

apt-cache search KWrite

shows only 2 packages, one of which is Kate, but it says, "Kate is a
multi document editor, based on a rewritten version of the kwrite
editing widget of KDE." and also says, "This package is part of KDE,
and a component of the KDE base module."

My workstation runs Kubuntu and KWrite was installed with the default
and KWrite has shown up before when I've added KDE to a system, so I
suspect it is included in the KDE base.

I've seen quite a few graphical diffs GNU and M$ ... but meld is
the best by far. I even got a M$ user to change to Linux just because
of meld

I tried it yesterday and it rocks. I can't believe I never heard of
it. And by the way, it's far superior to the Windows 'equivalent' I
mention above.

What is the difference between oss and floss? I thought oss stood for
"open source software" and floss was something you cleaned your teeth
with. Am I missing something?

Also debian-curiosa may be a more apt list for this.

OSS = Open Source Software
FOSS = Free/Open Source Software
FLOSS = Free/Libre/Open Source Software
(Libre as in the French pronunciation and meaning)

So, yes, you're missing something. Even the /. crowd has been using the
terms FOSS and FLOSS (or F/LOSS) for over a year.

Yes, but even you admit there must be *reasons*.

So, what is the *reason* that Hurd is a favorite piece of software,
if "you" have never used it?

I don't know if it's strange, but I liked debian (from what I'd read

to use it (if I can yet :( ).

You can like the *idea* of something without trying, but you don't
actually like *it*.

For example, *every* heterosexual guy on this list "likes" Scarlett
Johansson[0]. But, she might actually be a grade A bitch, and if we
ever met her, we'd hate her.

I think of the term "be a user of" as meaning that you use something
regularly or at least occasionally.

There are many pieces of software which I've tried out (e.g. when they
show up as new packages in debian's package list), and been very
impressed by, but simply not had the need to use.

For instance, libfltk is a very elegant GUI toolkit -- which I know from
reading the docs and playing around with simple example programs -- but
I really don't do any GUI programming these days. The next time I _do_
need to make a GUI, of course, libfltk will be one of the first things I
try (but who knows when that will be... no time... no time... :-).

It can be a matter of perception:
I don't use Blender, but I honour the clout that it managed to create

If you don't (now or at some time) use it, how do you know if you

I don't use Blender, but I honour the clout that it managed to create
for itself (Elephants Dream for example), and I often follow its
development, and excited by its success. I plan to do so soon, once I
have time.
I honor Blender also, but how can I honestly say it's one of *my*
*FAVORITE* applications, if I've never used it? I might try it and
think it sucks.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.

I can't wait for the completion of the project; I'd try the current
version if it had sound though.
Yes, you *would* try it. But you haven't.
And if you *did* try it, you *might* think it sucks.
The category 'unreleased' can help one to discover new, exotic
projects. The HURD is the one I anticipate most, so I find the entry
here worthyl.

You got a point, only that I felt hardpressed to include it here. Do
you mind including your list?

That's advocating the theoretical. People get burned that way.

Interesting that this category was overlooked. Probably shows that
debian-user doesn't play games that much. But I can't find xnethack in
Debian. What I find instead is nethack-x11, and I wonder if that's
what you mean.

Yes, there were a couple of things which I never thought of, and games
would be one. I would have to amend my list to include these and that
would make it as follows:

* audio editor [ sox, audacity ]
* audio player [ mpd (mpc, ncmpc), cdtool, mplayer ]
* cd-ripper [ abcde ]
* Desktop Environment [ N/A ]

* (unreleased) [ ]
* (great honours) [ Linux, GCC, glibc, Xorg ]

And new items:
* (games) [ ADOM, nethack ]
* (news) [ slrn, nget ]

I think that would be the final list, after more consideration.

Is adom free software now?! Last I remember, it was free-as-in-beer

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, I don't recall seeing any sources.
It probably is not free, and I will retract that one and just leave
nethack. Too bad though, as I enjoy ADOM a bit more.

A Unix shell is *in no way* a miscellaneous utility.

ANYONE who thinks so has Microsoft on the brain and it totally clueless.

Hi,
A year ago, I asked debian-user about favourite applications. The big
winners in that thread were GIMP, Firefox, K3b, gThumb, and
Thunderbird. I would like to start it again, and I would like those
who are get bored by this to please pardon me.
Here goes my new list (If you don't use certain things, please leave

them occupied with previous entries; this is to make the counting more

Hi Tshepang,
I have asked before on debian-devel if debian users could be involved in
a seperate informal vote like the one from DPL. In that vein, i'd also
like to see your poll use the Debian voting infrastucture, devotee, to
produce vote results. I think it would be great to have yearly votes
like this one or other ones that show what the debian populace think.
Any thoughts on this?

Sound like a brilliant idea. I just don't have an idea how it would be
implemented, except that there should be provision for names of real
binaries, instead of names of debian binaries, e.g. one should be able
to mention a love for top instead of being forced to choose procps,
since one would only be exposed to the top binary, or find it to be
the only interesting binary in the procps package.
The voters in this list did do this, disregarding exceptions where
several chose apt instead of apt-get as favourite 'package manager',
for example.
There should probably be a vote on what categories should be
considered, instead of using Debian's menu entries, which doesn't look
suitable at all.
The ability to vote would be nice, just so that we are not limited by
bug reports on what direction Debian is taking. A lot of us enjoy
working with Debian so much that we feel a part of it, and this would
make this relationship a bit warmer...

I think it would be useful to categorize users e.g.: desktop home, desktop
office, web admin,
There'll probably be a lot of overlap, but it's a good idea to consider.
* cd-ripper [ k3b ]
I was not even aware of this functionality. I'll probably throw
sound-juicer which is my favourite in this category.
* DBMS [ gnumerica ]
Where can I find this?
* (unreleased) [ hugin ]
But this is available in Debian. What do you mean?

OK, I meant functionality not real DBMS ;)
Small database for office use - sums, filtering etc. Gnumerica is
excellent here.

Can I then catecorize it under 'misc utilities'?
