BREAKING Knife Story: Asiana Passengers Almost Burned To Death Waiting For
Box Cutters
The Truth About Knives ^ | July 8, 2013 | Chris Dumm

Reports indicate that passengers aboard crashed Asiana Flight 214 were
trapped by their seatbelts while the Boeing 777 burned around them. If only
someone had a knife to cut them free, even a small pocketknife.

But nobody had any kind of knife, because knives aren't allowed on flights
that land or originate in the United States. So what happened?

... police officers on the ground threw utility knives up to crew members so
they could cut the seat belts of those who remained trapped as rescue crews
removed the injured.

You read that correctly: passengers were trapped in the burning wreckage, and
they had to wait until police showed up with box cutters to cut them free
from their seats.

Thanks to the TSA's absurd 'No Knives On Planes' rule, hysterically defended
by the Air Waitress union, nobody on flight 214 had a sharp rescue tool to
cut them free. How many of them would have burned alive if police and
firefighters hadn't showed up within minutes? What would the Air Waitresses
have said then? You'll notice that they're saying nothing right now.

repeating some stupid, meaningless phrase a billion times" Arms for
hostages, arms for hostages, arms for hostages, it's just about sex, just
about sex, just about sex, dumb, dumb, money in politics, money in
politics, Enron, Enron, Enron. Nothing repeated with mind-numbing

The item about police having to toss utility knives up to flight
attendants made the national and local news.

The Boeing 777 slammed into the runway on Saturday morning,
breaking off its tail and catching fire before slumping to a stop
that allowed the lucky ones to flee down emergency slides into
thick smoke and a trail of debris. Firefighters doused the flames
that burned through the fuselage with foam and water, and police
officers on the ground threw utility knives up to crew members so
they could cut the seat belts of those who remained trapped as
rescue crews removed the injured.

The Associated Press reported that police officers on the ground
outside the Asiana crash threw utility knives up to crewmembers,
so they could cut the seat belts of passengers trapped in the plane.

The TSA continues to prohibit pocketknives on planes:

Under pressure from lawmakers and flight attendants, the
Transportation Security Administration said it would indefinitely
prohibit passengers from carrying small pocket knives on planes —
a ban that began after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The decision is a dramatic reversal for TSA chief John Pistole.
Two months ago he decided to lift the ban, saying the move would
enable airport security officers to focus on bigger threats, such
as explosives.

Every one of the mentions of knives being thrown up comes from the
same AP story, which doesn't say:

1) Who said this and who reported it

2) Why the flight attendants didn't just pop the seat belt latches

2) What police officers were doing with box cutters in their pockets

3) Why people had to be cut out of the easiest-to-release seat belts
of all time

4) If anyone actually was cut out of a seat belt

It still sounds like krapola.

We carry a variety of devices. Since very few departments actually
issue such things, it's typically a matter of personal preference as to
what you carry on your person. On duty, I carry a large, partially
serrated Benchmade folder, and a pair of paramedic shears. Around here,
a good folder clipped into a pocket is far more common than any sort of
hook tool/draw knife/specialized cutting tool, and most cops carry one, too.

In my personal on-duty bag, I also have a small combination draw
knife/window punch, and a large, heavy cable cutter multi-tool.

I posted a reply to
rec.crafts.metalworking,misc.survivalism,alt.survival
and some how she picked it up and bitched about being in a Canadian
group.

Apparently she thinks she can divine things from headers. The best I
can figure from quite a few such reports, is that she picks up your
netnym if you ever responded in any thread that included a Canadian
group in the groups list. After that, if you post in any thread in any
group, your post is considered a threat to Canadian sovereignty.

She is not too bright. Name is Kim Dobranski possibly of Kelowna, BC.

She likes to threaten us too.

alt.politics,alt.survival,misc.survivalism,rec.crafts.metalworking,talk.politics.guns
So what are you doing, pasting on a couple more?
|--You just might find that if you disrupt OUR newsgroup, your
|--alt.survival may also be disrupted. Wanna start?
If what you say is true then people like that merely crave attention.
The very best think you can do is ignore them. Don't reply to
anything they post and be sure you always trim can.politics out of any
replies to others. Maybe if you ignore them long enough they will go
someplace else.

Same thing with the Mormon.

There is no such thing as "flight waitresses" you ignorant, sexist,
drunken lout. The cabin crew are there primarily for the safety of the
passengers and aircraft, serving food and drinks to obnoxious, whiny,
drunken pigs like you are entirely optional.

Even you claim that the cabin crew were engaged in rescuing passengers
from the aircraft after the crash. Do you classify that as "waitress"
work, you ignorant, illogical, hate-filled buffoon? Because it sure
sounds exactly like the actions of a professional, well-trained cabin
crew performing their job of saving the lives of their passengers to me.

Don't try to play off your drunkenly obnoxious insult of cabin crew as
some sort of joke addressed at me or anyone else here, now that maybe
you've finally sobered up a bit. After all, it was posted after one in
the morning, and it's not uncommon to find you deeply in your cups by
that time.

Here, let me remind you of what you actually wrote at the time, in case
you've blacked out and can't recall:

"Fuck yourself up the ass with a broken bottle, you fucking goddamned
squat-to-piss faggot troll.

The cops tossed utility knives up to the flight waitresses to cut the
passengers out of the plane. Prove they didn't, you motherfucking
shit-eating cocksucker."

That, Pimple, is the language of an angry, obnoxiously drunken lout,
which you certainly are, not of a would-be humorist setting a clever
trap, which you certainly aren't, even though that's what you're now
quite artlessly and ineffectively trying to pretend.

Everyone here knows you too well to not see straight through to the
truth of the matter, Pimple. There is no doubt whatsoever that it was
just another of the gratuitously stupid insults which constantly litter
your inane posts, especially your drunken ones.

Moreover, your ignorantly sexist insult of "flight waitresses" is
entirely and precisely consistent not only with your generally loathsome
character, but also specifically with your common use of sexist female
references as supposed insults, as well as your unintentionally
self-revelatory and over-frequent display of graphically homoerotic
imagery and language.

From the Associated Press—

After nearly 11 hours in the air, the passengers and crew aboard
a jumbo jetliner traveling from Seoul to San Francisco were
looking forward to a quick and uneventful landing as Asiana
Airlines Flight 214 approached the airport from over San
Francisco Bay. What they got instead, without a word of warning,
was terror, panic and confusion.

It's not in rational dispute - the AP *DID* report that police officers
threw utility knives up to the flight attendants. I don't claim to know
that AP got that right, but jeffy m (the disgraced and disbarred ex
lawyer) and Scheisskopf have no valid reason to think they got it wrong.
The only reason those two, and their fellow sniveling left-wing lackey
not-so-fast eddie, say they "doubt" the AP story is that they don't like
the political implications of it. To left-wing fuckstains like these,
if something is politically incorrect, then they think it must be
factually wrong. But that's not reality.

Congenial, ain't he?

It's so amusing and easy to set him off, with that inchoate, hair
trigger rage of his, always bubbling just below the surface, just
waiting for him to lose it as he so often does and is doing again now.
He's ridiculously unable to control his emotions, and now his immature
loss of control appears to be mixed with what seems to be his increasing
alcoholic dementia.

I'd say that he's showing signs that he's well on his way to his final
slide into oblivion. Given his "congenial" personality, on display
here, it's a sure bet he's going to die unmourned, friendless, and
alone, when his time comes, whether sooner or later. Doubtless, his
loathsome character means he is alienated even from whatever family he
once had.

So Pimple will end up either buried in a grave where no one ever comes
to visit or leave any flowers, with only the the undertaker to see him
lowered into the ground, or maybe on the dissection table in some human
anatomy lab, being slowly picked apart by a succession of medical
students each time he's slid out of the cooler. But at least there he'd
finally be worth something, and for the first time ever, do some good
for someone else. Meanwhile, I'm sure that many who have had the
misfortune of having to put up with him will hoist a beer with a smile
on their faces, to celebrate the event.

Boy, I *REALLY* got you!
Don't try to play off your drunkenly obnoxious insult of cabin crew
as some sort of joke addressed at me or anyone else here, now that
maybe you've finally sobered up a bit. After all, it was posted
after one in the morning, and it's not uncommon to find you deeply
in your cups by that time.
Here, let me remind you of what you actually wrote at the time, in
"Fuck yourself up the ass with a broken bottle, you fucking
goddamned squat-to-piss faggot troll.
The cops tossed utility knives up to the flight waitresses to cut
the passengers out of the plane. Prove they didn't, you
motherfucking shit-eating cocksucker."
That, Pimple, is the language of an angry, obnoxiously drunken
lout, which you certainly are, not of a would-be humorist setting a
clever trap, which you certainly aren't, even though that's what
you're now quite artlessly and ineffectively trying to pretend.
Everyone here knows you too well to not see straight through to the
truth of the matter, Pimple. There is no doubt whatsoever that it
was just another of the gratuitously stupid insults which
constantly litter your inane posts, especially your drunken ones.
Moreover, your ignorantly sexist insult of "flight waitresses" is
entirely and precisely consistent not only with your generally
loathsome character, but also specifically with your common use of
sexist female references as supposed insults, as well as your
unintentionally self-revelatory and over-frequent display of
graphically homoerotic imagery and language.
You got me again!
No, you did it to yourself, Pimple. You are far too much of a sick,
twisted, and pathetic loser to redeem yourself now, and too weak and
demented to try.

But I suppose you are due some slight credit for still having enough
sense left in your booze-addled head to at least be embarrassed enough
by your humiliating behavior and what it says about your loathsome
character to try to deny it or disguise it.

Ever the Bridesmaid: Thoughts on Asiana Flight #214
July 8, 2013 by Patricia Sund
[embedded images omitted, see original, link below]

In view of the crash of Asiana Flight #214 in San Francisco, I have been
asked to post about it here. Parrot people fly on planes too and my 26
years of experience in the industry has prompted many questions about
the crash from a Flight Attendant’s point of view.

One of the questions had to do with our training. What exactly are we
trained to do? It’s a pretty long list, actually. And the list of what
we are trained for and what we can be asked to respond to can be found
in the Flight Manual pictured above. Here is what is inside that manual
cover:

That’s a lot of ground. Some of the things we are trained to handle are
medical emergencies, Ditching (evacuating in water), volatile fuel
threats and fires, evacuations, blocked exit procedures, decompressions,
life raft procedures, and malfunctions.
We have to know how to deal with armed passengers, armed officers
escorting prisoners, deportees, and hostile passengers.

We are well trained in the use of emergency equipment such as halon fire
extinguishers, solid state oxygen units, cold weather survival
equipment, automatic external defibrillators, the first aid kit, the
pocket mask for mouth-t0-mouth resuscitation, life rafts, and the
emergency locater transmitter. Not only that, we have to know where
every piece of this equipment is on every airplane we’re qualified on.
I’m currently qualified on 5 types of aircraft, but each type has
different models and configurations, so we have to know the quirks of
where they put the equipment on each configuration of each aircraft.
We have to know a myriad of security procedures, sabotage procedures,
how to put out a high energy battery fire if someone’s laptop ignites,
unauthorized evacuation procedures, (if a passenger pops a slide on the
ground) how to handle an Arctic landing, and inadvertent oxygen mask
drops. This is just the tip of the iceberg of stuff we have to know.
Look at the size of the manual. We have to know this stuff. And we get
updates, revisions and bulletins every few weeks when stuff changes. So
in actuality, we’re retraining all of the time.

Sometimes this knowledge and equipment helps us out tremendously in an
emergency. However, there are those times when all bets are off and you
have to make it up as you go along. Usually, these are cases when there
is no procedure in place when something occurs. The FAA and the Airlines
can’t think of every possible scenario. Usually in these cases, the
Flight Attendants end up creating a policy or procedure that eventually
is put in place by the Airlines or by the FAA.

There’s only so much training you can get before you run into something
that has never happened before. So trust me when I tell you that there’s
a lot more to this career than slinging orange juice and telling people
to turn off their cell phone. A lot more. The thing is, you just don’t
see it. As I said to someone on Facebook, if you saw what was covered in
my manual, you’d freak.

For instance, on Flight #214, two of the slides deployed inside the
aircraft which is really not where you want them to be, obviously. They
malfunctioned and pinned two of the flight attendants underneath. I can
tell you this. There is no procedure for this, at least at my company.
So the other Flight Attendants used axes to deflate the slides and get
those pinned Flight Attendants out from under the inflated slides. And
it probably wasn’t easy. Those slides are big and really heavy. Let me
put it this way: I don’t think a salad fork would do the trick.

It was a bad accident and I’m happy, yet amazed that only two people
lost their lives. With the tail being sheared off by hitting the sea
wall, that most likely severed a lot of wiring. Between that and the
fuel onboard, you had the perfect mix for a nice campfire right there in
coach. From what I’m able to ascertain from the video I saw of the
crash, the pilot was coming in too low and too slow and apparently
attempted to abort the landing and he pulled up on the controls to raise
the nose. This cocked the angle of the plane down in the back and the
wall sheared off the tail.

I’ve been in airplanes that have aborted both takeoffs and landings.
They aren’t fun. I’ve seen a lot of things happen on flights that you
wouldn’t believe. But until you experience it, you really never see
Flight Attendants in action. And you probably never want to see what we
are trained to do. What bothered me the most about the reporting was
that former DOT Inspector General, Mary Schiavo credited the pilots for
opening the exits. She said, and I quote: “You have to push a button in
the cockpit. You have to actually activate the emergency exit. And in
many cases, that never comes, and it’s passengers who get up and say,
I’m going to get myself out of here, and I’m going to save several people.”

This is a crock of complete crap. And it was a real “douche canoe”
statement to make. The pilots do not activate the doors or the slides.
The Flight Attendants do that after visually assessing what’s happening
outside the aircraft in that area of the aircraft and ensuring there’s
no fire. The pilots don’t have rearview mirrors and have no idea what’s
actually going on behind them. There are no “buttons” in the cockpit to
activate the slides or open the doors. I really would expect that Ms.
Schiavo would know this. Every day I see people who can’t open a damned
bathroom door. They try to open the lav door using the ashtray mounted
on the wall. So can passengers actually open the doors? Yes, they can.
But Flight Attendants are seated next to the doors and usually take care
of that.

And I’m getting real tired of the media and the press being a day late
and a dollar short with crediting Flight Attendants for what they do.
This Flight Crew did an absolutely amazing job with this accident and
they are indeed heroes. And finally, in the last day or so, they are
beginning to get credit for for actions. I do see some good coming out
of this. People are going to begin to pay attention to the safety video
and read the safety card in the seat back pocket. They’re going to be a
tad more respectful. They’re going to say “Please” and ”Thank you.” For
about two weeks. 9/11 got them paying attention for about a month and a
half. People actually thanked us for coming to work when we got flights
back in the air five days later. Forgive my cynicism, but that’s the
nature of the beast. People want to forget. They simply don’t want to
think about these things. And I don’t blame them. But I have to. And I
do it every day.

So you see, we are indeed “Bridesmaids” and never the bride. Why?
Because nobody, and I mean nobody ever wants to see what Pilots and
Flight Attendants are actually paid to do and to know. Do you really
want to be there and see how damned fast I can evacuate a 757-2R exit?
Do you really want to see me help deliver a baby at 35,000 feet? (And
yes, I did.) Do you want to see me on the floor applying shock pads of
the automatic external defibrillators to a guy dying of a heart attack?
(Yup. Been there too.) Do you want to see Pilots bring in a DC10 with
absolutely no flight controls? Well, they did. They did it here:

And if you think landing in water is unlikely, it usually is. Yet it is
indeed survivable. “Sully” did it here. And the flight attendants
evacuated the plane right in the middle of the Hudson River:

185 survived that horrific crash in Sioux City. Considering the
circumstances, that’s pretty damned good. And every passenger survived
the “Miracle on the Hudson” flight.

My hope for the future of air travel is that people get their crap
together and start flying responsibly. Wear long pants, a long sleeved
shirt and closed-toe shoes. Count the seat backs to your nearest exit.
Pay attention to the safety video. Read the damned safety card so you
have an idea what you’re doing. And for God’s sake, listen to us.

Ah, but Pimple is also in his foaming-at-the-mouth rage mode 95% of the
time, and his despicable ignoramus mode 100% of the time. That's why he
likes to insult people who save other people's lives.

Whatever errors the flight crew may have made before the crash, accounts
indicate that afterward they and the cabin crew did a good, even heroic,
job of helping save lives. Maybe Pimple is jealous of their courage and
achievement, since he has neither, and we know how jealous and insulting
he gets toward his betters.

(Excerpt) Read more at thetruthaboutknives.com ...
Sounds like the seat belt manufactuer is over due for a FAA compliance
check
Sounds more like Keller Krapola.
Firefighters doused the flames

so they could cut the seat belts of passengers trapped in the plane.

Police officers threw utility knives up to crew members inside
the burning wreckage of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 so they could
cut away passengers' seat belts. Passengers jumped down emergency
slides, escaping the smoke. One walked through a hole where a
rear bathroom had been.

Sounds more like Keller Krapola.

Hey Shit-for-brains, you don't make up any absurd claim you want then
presume it's true because nobody can prove you wrong. That's a
logical fallacy called proof of the negative. You have to prove
something happened. And of course this is bullshit because all those

prove it or STFU.

Plimpton is much nastier and more obnoxious than usual when he's drunk.

And to think, only a few days ago, Plimpton was describing himself thusly:

On 7/7/2013 9:34 PM, George Plimpton wrote:
"Prof. Plimpton being...smarter, more intelligent, more productive, more

In addition to his ridiculous claim to any degree of congeniality, I am
highly amused by his continued misappropriation of the "Prof." to
himself, since he admits his failure to attain any advanced degree, or
any sort of teaching position, which would be a considerable stretch
anyway.

All he is really doing is demonstrating that his oft-repeated scorn for
all of academia is merely a pathetic attempt to mask his envy. It just
goes to show what a twisted, sick, pitiable failure he really is.

My wild guess? Maybe somebody tossed a knife to somebody else to cut
wires or other wreckage or material entangling or trapping a victim.
But I'm keeping an open mind until the NTSB has done its thing.

I know from personal, repeated, first hand experience that media
reports, especially early media reports, invariably get some of the
details, and even some of the core facts, wrong, occasionally wildly so.

(Excerpt) Read more at thetruthaboutknives.com ...
Sounds like the seat belt manufactuer is over due for a FAA compliance
check
Sounds more like Keller Krapola.
Firefighters doused the flames
that burned through the fuselage with foam and water, and police
officers on the ground threw utility knives up to crew members so
they could cut the seat belts of those who remained trapped as
rescue crews removed the injured.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-at-tail-end-of-transpacific-flight-terror-20130707,0,655318.story
The Associated Press reported that police officers on the ground
outside the Asiana crash threw utility knives up to crewmembers,
so they could cut the seat belts of passengers trapped in the plane.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/07/asiana-crash-evacuation/2496729/
Police officers threw utility knives up to crew members inside
the burning wreckage of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 so they could
cut away passengers' seat belts. Passengers jumped down emergency
slides, escaping the smoke. One walked through a hole where a
rear bathroom had been.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57592571/six-still-in-critical-condition-from-asiana-airlines-flight-214-crash/

That is my understanding as well. I plan on asking my friend, a flight
safety/human factors expert from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical, or getting
my wife, who works at an aerospace medical research facility, to find
out about that specifically.

All the aircraft seatbelts I've ever seen appear to have a simple mechanical
release.
I suppose under tension, such as passenger hanging upside down, it might not
be releasable. But, why design it that way?

My understanding, backed by experience, is that they are specifically
engineered to not jam under any survivable dynamic or static load. It
is possible that clothing or something else caught in the buckle could
jam it, or else crash debris or body position could block access to the
buckle. I usually just cut them rather than reaching and feeling around
for the buckle, as a matter of speed and efficiency, as well as evidence
preservation. That way, I don't have to go to court just to testify
that the seat belt was in use, since it remains buckled after rescue.

Yeah, but that's a pretty rare occurrence. You can usually just follow
the belt with your hand from the side near you straight to the buckle,
which is more or less in the middle on an airliner. Cutting seat belts
is usually just a matter of speed and convenience, not necessity.

But for the second or third passenger down a row of seats, I'd expect
unbuckling to usually be quicker than cutting, though, especially if the
first seat is occupied of full of debris. Whatever did happen, I'm sure
it will be covered in the NTSB investigation report.

My wild guesses in order of expected likeliness are:

1. Wires or other wreckage or debris, not a seat belt or buckle,
blocking access to or egress of a passenger,

2. a panicky or impaired passenger unable to operate the buckle
themselves and confusedly preventing the cabin crew from doing so,

3. a seat belt buckle not being easily reachable due to debris or
luggage in a passenger's lap, or

4. a passenger with their torso forced or crushed forward, with their
abdomen folded over and atop or engulfing the buckle.

I agree. It is just that some of the stories coming down about the
rescue (and we know how accurate they are) mentioned some problems with
seats in the middle of the AC. Overhead compartments coming down on
them, etc.. My point was simply that some of the passengers may have
been unable to physically get to their buckles due to debris or injury,
etc.. and need to be cut free.

Agreed. I'll get to read all about the rescue efforts in a little
while, in the trade and professional literature, as well as the NTSB
report. I read that sort of thing quite a bit.

I'm particularly interested in the report that one of the deceased was
struck by a fire apparatus. If so, I hope it was postmortem and not
antimortem. As to the seat belt issue, I'd guess the FAA and airlines
will be adding a few basic rescue hand tools to their required equipment

Fuck what it doesn't say, fuck your son who wheedles people into
becoming dole scroungers, and fuck you sideways up the ass with a
swordfish. You have no valid grounds for doubting the story.
It's bullshit. It never happened. Seatbelt clips are designed for
easy quick release. Nothing could possibly make a whole bunch of them
not release.
How about being pinned in a seat and UNABLE to reach the release? That
apparently happened to some where the seats got jumbled up and an example
of that were the stewardesses pinned under two escape slides that opened
inside the cabin. I will assume that you have seen some of the pictures
from inside the AC and understand them.

Sounds like the seat belt manufactuer is over due for a FAA compliance
check
Sounds more like Keller Krapola.
'Great source there, Ray...
"How many of them would have burned alive if police and firefighters
hadn't showed up within minutes?"

Every US airport that has commercial airline service has aircraft rescue
firefighters and apparatus permanently assigned to it.

The seat belts should not have jammed under ANY survivable dynamic or
static load whatsoever, if that's what actually happened.

More so than in other types of fires, speed of evacuation is the
difference between life and death in aircraft fires.

the "Air Waitress union" comment demonstrates that the author is a
snidely ignorant and sexist jackhole. The cabin crew is there primarily
for passenger safety. Food and beverage service and tending to whiny
passengers is entirely secondary and optional.

And how many seat belts did they have to cut?

I tracked down the original quotes from the two officers a few days
ago (Cunningham and Fisk? Something like that, anyway), and they never
said. They only said they tossed up their knives to two flight
attendants.

The flight attendants apparently haven't said anything about it.
Various sources said that the knives were "utility knives" or "sheath
knives."

It would be interesting to know. But the original story posted here,
which apparently was based on ONE comment in ONE Associated Press
story, without specifics, implied that all those lives were saved by
luck, and that it would have been easier if eveyone on board had a
blade.

Maybe like the box cutters that the Queda loons used to slash the
throats of flight attendants on 9/11, eh?

Does the TSA search passengers in Korea when they're boarding a plane
for the US on a foreign carrier?

This knife thing is ridiculous. Ok, maybe full sized sharpened machetes
should be allowed, but come on.

And there is a different passenger mindset now. Before 911 the passenger
attitude was bend over and let it happen.

Since then, the mindset is all passengers, regardless of physical condition,
is attack the perp and beat the crap out of him....or worse.

Nice if someone would check TSA list, and see if bandage shears are legal. They "should" cut seat belts in a crisis.

No more "let you out in Cuba". Now, it's "Lets Roll" and like you say. Tangos gonna get pounded.

That's the person at the airport playing with your genitals to see if you're
carrying something proscribed.
