It isn't much of an auspicious day.

The Brooklyn Bridge opened on May 24th, 1883. I know because I went to

Three. One is a hot dog in a bun. With mustard AND relish!
Does it go "la la la la la" (Perfect Hair Forever)
...and I just have to hear why a hotdog on a bun.
My friend Mark worked at a tat shop around the corner from the lunch
joint I worked at. He'd gimme a call late afternoon, and I'd drop by
with some chow for the boys after work. One day he say, "you know,
there's only two pieces of flash I haven't done." Flash being all the
drawings hung on the wall. He grinned and said, "Want a free tattoo?"
What's the choices? "Bic pen or a hot dog." The choice was obvious.
"I'll take the dog, but not without any relish". And so it happened.
In retrospect, the Bic pen would have been great as well. :-D

Still, when I'm out cycling, wearing those emasculating little socks,
I still get a compliment on my hot dog from time to time when I'm at
stop lights. It's seriously more cool than some stupid dragon or
something.

Best food tattoo I ever saw was a guy I worked with that had flaming
macaroni and cheese on a crucifix. That's the Mt. Everest of tattoos.

great.

Mixed drink? If it's done the way I like, a whiskey sour. The
whiskey and mix should be balanced so that neither overpowers the
other. Mostly I have beer when I drink.

9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
Not necessarily. It's good to have some sort of ritual to mark
special events, to fix them in memory, or to mark a commitment. I
do think weddings have become far too commericalized and overblown.

Interviews, or just television appearances? In most of the TV
appearances I've seen he's been "on". I don't think appearing on the
Daily Show or some other talk show counts as an interview. People
are usually there to promote a book, a movie, or something.

I read an article years and years ago that said Williams was very
difficult to interview because he had trouble staying seated and
focused. I've only seen it happen on Letterman. But if he couldn't or
wouldn't turn that kind of thing off, it would play quite poorly on
radio.

I've always assumed it's "couldn't" rather than "wouldn't" -- I don't
think he actively intends to wreak havoc, but he seems to find it
impossible to stop himself from performing in front of a camera.

Strangely enough, I found watching Peter Ustinov on talk shows quite
similar. He was particularly good at telling anecdotes and using
accents, and unless the interviewer kept a short rein on things --
which seldom seemed to happen, as the hosts were always in awe of him
-- it was a case of "wind him up, set him off, and let him run".

I don't think either Williams or Ustinov could really control the
desire to do their schtick unless somebody was willing to hold them
back.

Jonathan Winters was another of those, and I recall seeing (or hearing,
it could have been radio) a documentary in which Williams paid homage to
Winters. Incidentally, they were both able to wind down and talk
normally about their craft, thought not for long periods, without
soaring off on two or three tangents at once.

It's absolutely fascinating to hear these guys talking straight
about/analysing what they do; the problem usually lies with the
interviewers, who are seldom strong enough or focussed enough to keep
them off of their performing perch long enough to talk to them.

If I had interpreted the question to include people I don't
know, I think Robin Williams would be a good choice, too.
Terry Gross interviewed him a few years ago. He was funny a
few times, but she was amazed that he would calm down enough to
talk sensibly to her. I'm not sure why she thought he couldn't
turn it off.
Well, in other interviews he hasn't been able (or perhaps
willing) to turn it off. I expect she knew that.
Interviews, or just television appearances? In most of the TV
appearances I've seen he's been "on". I don't think appearing on
the Daily Show or some other talk show counts as an interview.
People are usually there to promote a book, a movie, or something.
I read an article years and years ago that said Williams was very
difficult to interview because he had trouble staying seated and
focused. I've only seen it happen on Letterman. But if he couldn't or
wouldn't turn that kind of thing off, it would play quite poorly on
radio.
Zackly, and how'd he manage to do all those dramatic movies,
then?

Eventually he calmed down/went off the drugs a bit. Plus a director
gets to try for multiple takes and keep the best ones.

EVENTS
1455 - Traditional date for the publication of the Gutenberg Bible, the
first Western book printed from movable type.
1836 - The Siege of the Alamo begins in San Antonio, Texas.
2006 - The 1 Billionth song was downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.

BIRTHDAYS
1685 - Georg Friedrich Handel, German/British Baroque composer (d. 1759)
1944 - Johnny Winter, American musician
AND! As an ADDED BONUS! A 3rd birthday;
1994 - Dakota Fanning, American child actress

DEATH
1965 - Stan Laurel, British born actor and comedian (b. 1890)

HOLIDAY
Roman Empire - Terminalia held in honor of Terminus

2. Do you still have your tonsils?

Of course I still have my toenails! What kind of question is tha ... oh ...
wait... scratch that. No, I have been "tonsil free" for 44 years now! AND
during that time I have also lost almost _4_ pounds!

3. If You Could Do Anything In The World For A Living What Would It Be?

Musician

4. How many tattoos do you have, if any?

Ugh... I think Tatoos are repulsively ugly. I have none.

5. Who is the one person that never fails to make you laugh?

George Honea (drummer I went to college with). As for someone more famous
than George; assuming that he is not playing a serious role like in
Insomnia, Robin Williams. Peter Cook was another and John Cleese is another.

6. Do you consider yourself well organized?

I am only well organized with things that are important to me. All other
things - not by any stretch of the imagination.

7. The Oscar nominations were recently announced - what was the Best Movie
you saw last year?

I know I went to a movie last year but I can't remember what it would have
been. Was there a Harry Potter movie last year?

8. What is your favorite alcoholic drink?

Italian wines IN Italy (meaning not Italian wines imported to America
because they are loaded with sulfides and those gives me headaches). I also
found a French beer - Fischer's - that was good but I only had the one and
that was enough for me for a while. I just don't drink alcoholic drinks too
often (unless I am in Italy) for no other reason than I don't. I have one
when I want one but it might be a year or so between times that I want one
(unless I am in Italy).

9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?

No. Granted, mine haven't worked out all that great but I still believe in
it and I am always on the look out for the next ex wife.

10. Do you burn or tan?

Tan. _Only_ tan ... except for the top of my bald little head now ... recent
development.

I knew it before I met my husband.
Actually, I think I may have been in the same boat.

Long long ago, in a place far, far away (OK Rochester, 70 miles) I was
shopping at BLs Wholesale club. Well let's fast forward a year or so.
After I met my wife and we had dated awhile, she recounted a story
that one day she was "leaving" BJs and spotted a guy (me) at the
checkout line, and she couldn't take her eyes off of him (me).

Now go back to the long long ago reference and after she told me that
story, I remembered the incident too. At that time, my wife had
figured she was not likely to ever get married, and her hairdresser
wanted to try something wild. She gave her a "Butch" haircut.

She still had it when we started dating, anyway, I remember this woman
with the butch haircut staring at me at BJs. it made me VERY
uncomfortable. Then, suddenly, something went through my head.
Something like "You are going to marry that woman".
I shook it off as I never saw nyself going out with what looked like a
lesbian and could not figure where that stray thought came from.

Anyway, we got set up on a blind date by mutual friends.... and the
rest, as they say, is history.

I love this story. Here's mine, although I'm sure I've told it before:

My husband and I have known each other since we were 11. I recall at my
eighth grade graduation my mother spotting my now husband. She said, "Oh,
he's really cute." I said "Ewwwwwwwwww. Yuck!"

He dated my best friend Sandy through most of high school and for ten years
total. For ten years I dated someone I met at college, name of Chris. Some
years later, when we were all 30, Sandy was a bridesmaid at our wedding (and
we all go to the June race at Pocono every year) and we go to Chris' mom's
house every year at Christmas. Well, Sandy doesn't. You know what I mean.

It's kinda weird, I guess, but there was so little animosity involved in
either breakup that it works.

After several months? It took Rick and me 5 1/2 years to get married.
Several months strikes me as rushing it.
I knew after a few months that my wife and I were destined to get
married.
Likewise.
I don't think it makes much difference. I know people who took years
to decide, a couple who took hours, and there seems to be relatively
little correlation between that and the success of the marriage. There
were successful and unsuccessful pairing on both sides and everything
in between.

I wish my parents had been quicker to marry. They took nine years to
decide, and that's nine years of extra disgusting love affair to end
all love affairs they could have had. Dammit, I could have been a
rich and privileged boomer had the Honourable Mother got her thumb
out!

9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
No, although I don't anticipate doing it again in this lifetime.
Really? Even if you fall in love again? Don't you think that after
several months you'd be all, We should take this to the next level, we
should be legally committed (har) to each other?

I knew in less than a month that I wanted to get married. She took a
bit longer to persuade and the paperwork took forever. 31 years of

Much the same for me. We met on 8th November 1958 and were engaged before
Christmas, married 18th July 1959. My wife died on 8th December 2003, 35
years and one month after we met.

Honey, when I hear people saying "legally committed" around me, I assume
there's a psych ward involved.

In the past 6 years, I've had several relationships, two that lasted over a
year each. With both of them, there were times when I wished they had some
sort of all-consuming hobbies that would take them elsewhere occasionally -
fishing, hunting, golf, live-action role-playing games...anything. Okay, in
those 2 relationships, one liked to hunt and fish, the other was into LARP,
but I didn't feel they were truly dedicated to their hobbies because they
didn't do it nearly often enough, and they both seemed to think that I would
resent any time they spent pursuing their hobbies. It wasn't because *I*
gave them the impression that I would be unhappy if they fished, hunted or
gamed...but their previous girlfriends had been extremely unhappy about
their fishing, hunting or gaming...and they'd "learned their lesson". So
while they thought they were doing the loving, generous thing by staying
close to home (and making sure I knew that they were staying close to home
because they loved me soooo much), I thought if they didn't get out to the
woods/out to the lake/over to the game soon I was going to teach them
another lesson. I might have *told* them it was erotic asphyxia, but I
suspect there would have been very little eroticism involved.

Where was I? Oh yeah, falling in love again and getting married. Yeah,
I'll probably fall in love again....but jeez, have some pity for the poor
guy because I'm a real pain in the ass who seems to require a great deal of
"alone" time. He'd have to be a saint to put up with me, and then I'd just
end up turning him into a martyred saint...

Oh, yeah, I need a lot of alone time too. These things can be worked
out. Marry somebody with a busy career. Or rent a second apartment and
don't provide your cell phone number. Or get him another girlfriend on
the side. It's all about creativity. And looove.

Ok, so you need alot of alone time. No problem. Find a guy you love.
Marry him. Buy him a set of golf clubs, a fishing boat, and a

Yeah, he's far too serious most of the time. Dumbledore's sense of
humor is never very far in the background. "Nitwit! Blubber!
Oddment! Tweak!" And what's with this "Eternal Glory!" he shouts in
GoF? That's not Dumbledore.

It's a shame Richard Harris died. He was always fun on Carson,
telling his outrageous tales of what he and (usually) Peter O'Toole
did while drinking. I want a copy of "Wrestling Earnest Hemingway".
That's an underrated little movie. Harris, Duvall, Maclaine, and the
first time I ever noticed Sandra Bullock.

I would have preferred Ian McKellan. He made a good Gandalf; I think
he'd be a good Dumbledore, too. There's talk of a live-action Hobbit
movie. McKellan wants to play Gandalf in it, too.

Well, to be honest, I never thought either actor "got" Dumbledore. I
thought Ian MacKellen (sp?) would have been perfect - the right combination
of whimsy and sternness. But nooo...MacKellen had to be Gandalf instead of
Dumbledore!

Ah well...

I would have loved MacKellen in the role; thought of him myself -- but
then, I'd pay to watch Ian MacKellen read the Yellow Pages.

A far less known actor who occurred to me for the role of Dumbledore was
Edward Petherbridge: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0677489/

Hmm. Let me look for a picture or two...

No picture at Wikipedia, but here's his writeup:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Petherbridge

Okay, here's a fairly recent photo:

Here he is as Lord Peter Wimsey in the late 1980s:

Turns out he's a pal and colleague of MacKellen.

I think it's actually the generation now in their 60s and 70s who got
tonsils removed. My sister, born in 1954, was already past the
"Tonsils! Get 'em!" phase of medical science. My mom, born in 1922,
doesn't have hers, though. She must've had them out around 1929 or

And my experience is that that all probably came to an end in the
'50s. I remember plenty of friends having their tonsils out when
I was a kid in that decade. Adenoids I'm less sure of, but I
remember my parents talking about that procedure in a way that I
seems in retrospect to make it sound like a not uncommon surgery
as well. I never had either operation.

I think the only reason I still have mine is that it was considered a Bad
Thing to take tonsils out of cleft-affected kids, for fear we'd get even
*more* ear infections. Since I seemed to have ear infections every single
day between birth and 13, I don't see how I could have gotten more ear
infections, but there you go. On the other hand, I had so many surgeries as
a kid I don't regret not losing my tonsils. After all, there are much, much
easier ways of getting free jello.

Nope.

Yes. When I do burn, it normally changes to a tan in a couple of
days. After that, no burns for the rest of the season.

months after the bridge's completion.

This looks too much like it would require effort to me. If someone
wants to do my homework for me, my birthday is Nov. 5.

The British are wonderful people...every year, they set off fireworks
on my birthday. I'm hopeful that in the future they will also send me
free beer and hookers. But fireworks are a good start.

2. Do you still have your tonsils?
Yep. Every few years I wish I didn't, when I get a bad sore throat or
they get infected. But we are mostly on good enough terms.

Roughly in decreasing order of desirability:

Independently Wealthy.
Superhero.
Rock star.
Porn star.
Supreme Emperor of Earth.
Exalted beer taster.

4. How many tattoos do you have, if any?
None. I think they are trendy. I am not trendy. I pretty much disdain
things that are trendy. I am a fashion trendsetter! Now I just need
some followers.

If I want to be. I rarely want to be. I'm typically only moderately
organized, and I get by with that.

7. The Oscar nominations were recently announced - what was the Best Movie
you saw last year?
I'm really bad at this type of question, because my brain doesn't
remember what was "last year" very well. Plus, I tend to wait for
stuff to come out on DVD, so I'm a bit behind. I just looked at a list
of the top 150 grossing movies of 2006, and none of the ones I've seen
really impressed me that much. "Superman Returns" had really good
sound, though. It scared the cat. Maybe someone else will mention
something that I liked, but I haven't read anyone else's response yet.

8. What is your favorite alcoholic drink?
Hooray beer!

9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
I differentiate between the marriage ceremony ritual and the actuality
of being married.
I think all rituals are archaic, at best. But the institution of
marriage is OK for some people. It's not for everyone.

Dry champagne (although I haven't had much in ages).

9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
Yes and no. Right now it's a dying institution - at least in much of the
West - and separation of church and state is urgently needed. But in
principle it's a necessary institution and will remain so for the
foreseeable future.

*Can* tan, but burn easily (Irish and Nordic genes).

Interesting death? Shia Imam Husayn bin Ali, the grandson of the
Prophet Muhammad, was decapitated by forces under Caliph Yazid I.

2. Do you still have your tonsils?
Depends on your definition. My pharyngeal tonsils (aka "adenoids")
got removed when I was still knee-high to a horse, but the regular
ones remain, and a fine job they're doing, too. It's nice - not
essential, but nice - to know that you've still got some tonsilly
stuff going down in there.

3. If You Could Do Anything In The World For A Living What Would It Be?
Owner and captain of a submarine, sailing in warm climes, diving reefs
and shipwrecks, taking decent passengers on board and getting to chat
with them while we explored the hidden depths. Strange, colourful
fish swim past while my cook prepares the meal.

That, or a professional jazz pianist role.
Post by Kim
4. How many tattoos do you have, if any?
None. If I wanted to display a picture or something to the world to
announce something, I'd write it on a piece of paper and put it on top
of a hat. That way, when I'd changed my mind, I could take the piece
of paper out of my hat without expensive and painful surgery.
Post by Kim
5. Who is the one person that never fails to make you laugh?
Even the greatest funny people sometimes fall flat. So "never fails"
doesn't work for me. There are a number of people who make me laugh
more than others, but they're British comedians, and you wouldn't have
heard of them. Jeremy Hardy is about the best.

Or are you asking about people I've actually met?
Post by Kim
6. Do you consider yourself well organized?
No. I'm shit at organising, and I'm ashamed, depressed and extremely
fed-up about it. It's a continuous struggle: Hatpin vs. Pieces of A4
That Came Through The Post That Demand Immediate Attention.

Six months ago, I bought a metal filing cabinet. It cost good money,
too. It even has wheels on the bottom! It's empty, but my desk is
piled high.
Post by Kim
7. The Oscar nominations were recently announced - what was the Best Movie
you saw last year?
I don't tend to watch films. It's difficult for me to spend that
amount of time passively in front of a screen; I get bored. Give me
the Interweb any time, so I can take part.
Post by Kim
8. What is your favorite alcoholic drink?
Beer. I like wine too, but I mostly drink beer. And too much of it.
Post by Kim
9. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
It is for me. Generally, though, I'm in favour, especially where kids
are involved. They need the stability of consistent parenthood, but
it's sadly rare for that to happen in real life.

If you can't commit to a lifetime of mutual and undivided devotion,
it's not working, and marriage is the best method we have of
encouraging couples to work together through the tough patches.

Thus spake divorcee-with-two-kids.
Post by Kim
10. Do you burn or tan?
Tan. I go a lovely shade of bronze, but I live in the UK, so it's
rarely seen.
