Mama (Your Daughter Told A Lie On Me) - Five Keys - 8

Great performance on this flipside and a very serious omission from
the 1953 Battle

The Dummy - Art Neville - 7

Unreleased version from "Mr Zing Zing" that I like better than the
Larry Williams original

Starlight Starbright - Luther Bond & His Emeralds - 7

Always liked this group since I discovered them via a beat up copy of
their Showboat single purchased for pennies on some London junk stall.
Again a flipside that got overlooked

All My Love Belongs To You - Hearts - 5

Much recorded song ( L W John,Jerry Wallace,Eddie Fontaine etc etc)
whose original is (I *think*) by Steve Lawrence on King in 1952.
Forgettable by The Hearts, this 1961 Vibrations version is much better
and is probably my favorite

Mama (Your Daughter Told A Lie On Me) - Five Keys
All My Love Belongs To You - Hearts
Starlight Starbright - Luther Bond & His Emeralds

The Dummy - Art Neville

Doesn't have the sonic richness of the first three; very plain, very pedestrian.
If these songs were heard live, I reckon most people would end up placing 'The
Dummy' last.

I am so disappointed, it's hard to put into words. I know my tastes are outside the range of most here, but so far outside is shocking.

I consider "All My Love Belongs To You" as probably the greatest girl group record and rate it a nine. To see so many place it last is discouraging to say the least.

---------
If you'd been a blues fan like me since my early teens you'd be used to
it by now. ("HOW CAN YOU LISTEN TO THAT CRAP?") In the last round, you
were the only person to rank "Tico Tico" above last place. I had
thought you might like it because I know you like Latin music, but whoop
de do, you ranked it 3rd. I still love the record, it's on my walking
playlist, so nothing changes for me.

I had deleted my whining post, but you gave it another life. C'est la vie.

I never was a fan of "Tico Tico" nor of Charlie Parker. This version is too manic and the drums go on too long.

I'd have to check what I have as the greatest girl group record. If we're just talking doo wop it's probably "The Plea" by the Chantels. If 60s stuff is included it's probably a Motown thing or one of the Ronettes things maybe. I think "Lonely Nights" is far better than "All My Love Belongs To You."

The lead vocal is discordant with the low notes. And this is one of those
nominations which is not suited to quick sampling, not allowing a record to grow
on the listener.

The flip, "Talk About Him, Girlie", would likely have done better here:

Its *relatively* simple and repetitive nature means it would have directly
competed with "The Dummy" - with a fair chance of beating it.

btw, the instrumental backing on their early Baton records is notable.
The b-side of Lonely Nights, "Oo-Wee" has the instrumentation sharing the
limelight with the vocals:

BONUS - a guaranteed quarter-finalist, if it were not for a bias in this
electorate towards a 'deep black' dare I say 'harlem' sound, with soloists (eg
Lou Mac) or dominating leads, generally preferred over group doo-wop. Like the
Cardinals' "Miserlou", this Leach side could, unfortunately, pass as a 'white'
record.
