I have, for some time, been of the view that ladies-in-waiting are now
a dying breed. The Countess of Wessex, I think, has appointed none.
Will Camilla be more traditional and name some appointments. Any
suggestions?

Her friends include the Marchioness of Lansdowne/ Lady Sarah Keswick/
the Countess of Halifax/ Countess Peel/or perhaps her current _PA_ at
Clarence House will be given a formal title.

She is close to her sister Annabel Elliot (Diana appointed her sister
Lady Sarah McCorquodale as a Lady-in-waiting)/Mrs Nicholas Soames?

Ah, dear Sir Michael. The late Mariga Guinness always called him _Mr
Mick Jagger_ her fast delivery sounding like _Mr McJagger_.

They are seen by the public accompanying their particular HM/HRH on
official visits; they also act as secretaries -they deal with
correspondence from the public. Write to the Queen and you'll receive a
reply from a lady-in-waiting.

See Yvonne's splendid work on Queen Victoria's ladies in Waiting. The
role of these ladies haven't changed all that much from the 19th
century to the reign of Elizabeth II.

I was tempted to reply 'They wait', but that is the role of the Prince
of Wales.

Adam Helliker in the Sunday Express speculates on two possible
ladies-in-waiting:-

(1) the Hon Kirsty Smallwood, sister of Lord Beaverbrook, an old school
chum of Camilla's (her son Dominic Morley was a page boy at Camilla's
first marriage); and (2) Carolyn (Chubby) Benson, described as _Mrs PBs
second best friend_.

Chubby Benson is a daughter of Colonel William Gerrard Leigh, who
commanded the Household Cavalry and was Silver-Stick-in-Waiting to the
Queen and became known as Polo-Stick-in-Waiting to the Duke of
Edinburgh.
