Who gave the government my telephone number?

When did I give them permission to contact me with a text message?

To whom do I complain - the local police or the Data Commission or GCHQ?

I do not want spurious text messages arriving out of the blue.

I think the biggest difference between flu and Covid-19 isn't the
mortality rate, although Covid's is much higher. There is also a
significant proportion of Covid-19 patients who do survive but only
because of intensive hospital treatment, frequently requiring Intensive
Care. These are the ones who are bringing health services, across the
world, to their knees.

I’ve heard it explained that the ‘pass-on’ rate with Covid-19 is much
higher than with other virii; something between 2.5 and 2.8, this means an
infected person will if in contact with others have the ability to spread
to far more persons who, in turn will pass it on to far more persons...

So far. But CV has the potential to kill orders of magnitude more.

Swine flu deaths were estimated at between 151 and 575K, flu 291 - 646K
per annum. Worldwide.

We could get to those sort of numbers in the UK alone if 80% of the UK
population get it and there's 1% mortality.

It won't be that many I hope, but it could be if people don't start
taking it seriously and we get a spike in infections.

A big spike in infection rates will result in an even higher mortality
rate.
Intensive care facilities are already being overloaded, and that 1%
figure depends on effective medical intervention in serious cases.

Quite. The rate of infection will make a big difference, I was just
using those numbers to make the point about how dangerous it is.

for some different views.
Well, they (and you) are entitled to your views of course.

I gave up listening to the first when he started talking about a
conspiracy by Governments to kill off the old which we've discussed here
already.

Ironically the second starts with "[the doctor] was charming,
grey-haired, smooth and beautifully dressed." just like dear old Dr.
Vernon Coleman LOL

As it happens I agree with what a lot of them say about risks, death
rates etc. but I do NOT agree with their conclusions. In this case the
precautionary principle is best because the downsides are potentially so
huge. And also immediate, which is often not the case in e.g. CAGW.

This was, apparently, an emergency system - by which a text message can
be sent to _everyone_ on all networks - being tested.

When reporting on it on a news bulletin I saw earlier today, the
newsreader checked her own 'phone, and hadn't got it - so the test would
appear to be needed, to get the bugs out of it.

When I set up my new phone 2 or 3 years ago, I recall seeing a setting
for receiving national alerts or some such. (I can't find it now to see
what it is called.) When I read about the purpose of this setting, it
said that it was only relevant in the USA. I thought it sounded like a
good idea and left it on. When I got the text from UK_Gov this morning,
I wondered whether they were starting to use this option here. If that
is the case then it might explain why we haven't all received it.

It seems to have been rolled out at different times, presumably to avoid
overloading the networks. I was seeing reports of it on Facebook this
morning, but T and I (O2) didn't get ours till early evening.

Not seen nuffink here yet, not no how.
Are you iPhone or AN Other? I bought my iPhone a few weeks ago. And I
can’t remember such a thing

Who gave the government my telephone number?
When did I give them permission to contact me with a text message?
To whom do I complain - the local police or the Data Commission or GCHQ?
I do not want spurious text messages arriving out of the blue.

We have received a text message which gives a link to gov.uk and there’s a
scrollable back from the current message back as far as you have the will
to live messages to read.

Not the government. The NHS.

The government tested and proved but were too mean to implement an
emergency alert system.

Different message. The one krw is (I assume) referring to clearly comes
from UK_Gov and sends people to a gov.uk website. The Guardian article
talks about more targetted messages from the NHS to patients known
(believed) to be particularly vulnerable.

That's what I got. They have my phone number because my surgery has it
so they can remind me about appointments etc and I'm very happy for them
to do so.

Same for pharmacy but that was a separate permission.

Yes. Not the NHS one. I see that now.

I got mine this afternoon, here in sunny Buenos Aires lockdown so it´s
plainly not an emergency government broadcast system - Which (the
Grauniad article says) We Have Not Got and reading around in other
groups I get the impression that the government simply instructed each
of the phone companies to broadcast the message on its behalf to all
their subscribers.

Chris has now received the text on her phobile though I haven’t yet;
nevertheless I did have a message as follows:

‘You have 1 message that will expire on 04/03. To listen to this message
just access your voicemail on 222.”

I smelt a very large rodent and it sounded rather piscatorial, especially
as my messages don’t normally expire in this way and... it wasn’t for days
that I saw it so I hadn’t bothered with it; I decided to google and...

There seems to be some dispute about that one.

I have a New Voicemail message that won't go away. It's asking me to pick
up an urgent voicemail by calling +447870020555 and it won't go away. I'm
ignoring it as that *isn't* how my voicemails are retrieved. It seems to
be more harassment than a scam though.

After reassurance about last night's episode being safe to listen to I
decided to listen to Tuesday's,as I don't like gaps. Once again Philip
was unpleasant and lying but not as evil as the scene with Blake.

I still have last night's to listen to. I have never been keen on Joy.
She is irritating and one of those people in scenes where most would
manage not to haveher force her way in, but in the present story lines
I will welcome a story with her in it and kittens.

Who has had a link to the Covid19 tracking app sent to them? I've had
three messages from friends with the link forwarded. It looks so spamy
it's not true, but the app is perfectly kosher and even featured on the

d#1 sent me the link yesterday and I have downloaded the app but not tried
to set it up yet. Reading the reviews a lot of folk struggled to create an
account and many of those who have were complaining about shortfalls in
what could and could not be entered.

I'll give it a try later, it sounded like a good idea and claims it only
takes a minute or two a day. Maybe they will pay attention to the feedback
and make some adjustments.
