Showers tomorrow, wind is from west so smoke should go out to sea.
Seems perfect time for a burn off maybe why it's happening now
(planned that way)?

Well those very close to HR may get a dose of smoke,
Not sure if there is a long range forcast fo wind direction?
The site below gives wind speed forcast up to five days.

Always a haze over Sydney but not with a South Westerly
South Easterly the opposite

http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/sydney.shtml?ref=hdr
Partly cloudy. The chance of fog in the outer west in the early
morning. Medium (40%) chance of showers. Winds southwesterly 15 to 25
km/h tending southeast to southwesterly in the morning then becoming
southwesterly 15 to 20 km/h in the late evening.

Trouble is I were 100% correct, Smoke over Campbelltown came from it's
own fireplaces (every winter the same and it's not wood a lot of them
burn).

I even showed you a link of Botany yesterday showing wind direction
going out to sea not coming inland. Today wind is still angled out to
sea West/North/West
18.5km/h direction WNW

In general, pretzel wind from the SW was predominantly correct, but going
backthrough the readigs forthe last few days, there was a clear band
where the wind was blowing from the east. This confirms my statement that
the wood burning smell could possible have come from the Royal National
Park area.

FWIW, we no longer have neighbours that regularly use a wood burner, so
when their is good wood burning, the smell is distnctive. So far, my
sense of smell is holding up as I age.

Gas is much cheaper and non-polluting.
Cheaper? It all depends where you get the wood from.
Non-polluting? Well, that is another matter. Gas heating adds to the CO2
emissions while wood heating can be regarded as just recycling CO2.
Of course, wood heating does emit particle pollution, that much is true.

Gas is much cheaper and non-polluting.
Cheaper? It all depends where you get the wood from.
Getting the wood helps my fitness although the chainsaw adds to pollution.
:-))  My husband is now into his third week of having tried to chop
his hand off with an axe. He's now healing nicely.
Yuck but he probably 'axed' for it.  Another cutting comment from dechucka
:-)) After he was patched up and no more blood was dripping around, I
too made very cutting comments.

Ouch, I've haven't usedd and axe for decades.
I've found it far safer and lless work to use a bow/hand saw for smaller
stuff and chainsaw with steelcps and leggings for the big stuff.

Got to split the wood and make the kindling with a tomahawk. I'm a wimp
I've got one of those chain mesh gloves things to reduce injury with my
lack of coordination when splitting kindling.

Also, log long time since i've had to do that. We have two major gums
trees on our block and anjoy a almost daily rain of thinner limbs that
provide all the kindlng we need. actually, too much and most ends up
muched as ground cover.

AFAIK, they are only good for slicing from cutting knives and do not help
with crush injury, which is what a tomahawk or axe basically does. I use
the thickest leather gloves I could source. riding a bicycle arond
Newcastle and Illawarra gave me a life times supply from roadside pickups.

I used to have two splitting blocks. One that had a groove that would
hold up the log section that I was intending to split into kindling,
so I didn't have to put my had in the firing line.

The second bigger block wag to elevate log blocks for the wedge splitter.

Bullshit on both counts. Gas would cost us far more than wood (and yes,
we do have connection and don't use it as we found out how expensive it
was last winter). AND gas IS polluting.

Non-polluting? Well, that is another matter. Gas heating adds to the CO2
emissions while wood heating can be regarded as just recycling CO2.
Of course, wood heating does emit particle pollution, that much is true.
But so much nicer to watch burning wood flickering in the grate than
listening to the hiss of gas.....

The out house (dunny) I like also liked peacful place where you are
left alone, ours had no door faced the mountains 10 minutes from the
house. We used a Train signal, BUSY, so one would know it's occupied.

I used to belong to a Hash House Harriers group and this time of year,
after following trail, we'd gather for some nosh and a couple of beers
whilst talking.

We had a Fire-Bucket made from an old metal (so must be old!!) washing
machine tub to which three legs of two-inch metal pipe had been welded.

Often, after standing with our fronts to the fire, we'd turn around,
like on a Rotisserie, to get an all over heat! ;-)

Yep. That's it with outdor fires. I always laugh when I see the
currently very trendy firepits in Bunnings.

Only someone who's never been camping or sat around an outside fire
after dark in winter would bother to buy one of those silly things.
Access to nice warm sitting room inside in winter is a much better idea
and leave the 'trendy' firepits for the homeless...

I agree sitting around a fire pit while not camping is crazy, however a
couple of quiet cool drinks etc standing around a pile burn on a cold
clear night is very pleasant. If sitting around a blanket is needed to
keep the back warm.

Yebbut, a pile burn is not a firepit. Rural dwellers often have had to
get rid of a pile burn. IMO, ya'd have to be a dill to spend good money
on a firepit. If you ever want to see how much of a dill, look at some
of the more pricey real estate ads for places in the Highlands. Sadly,
you area abounds with wallies and wankers.

Well, as some one who has camped with cooking/camp fire for well over
half a century, I two wouldn't waste mony on the latest bungling fire
pit, but I have made a "fire bucket" from an old 9kg LPg cylinder. I find
it far more efficent than a pile of wood on the ground cooking fire and
very efficent as a heater as the fire warms up the metal, which radiates
infra red heat very effectively.

The only cost was a bit of work with and angle grinder and a 5mm/10mm
drill bits, the scabbing some fine mesh as the grate.

Has the advantage that ash collects in the bottom and sieve for charcola
(forging) then can be disposed of on the gardens as fertiliser or other
uses.

I did this after seeing the ash mess from week long camp site where
munkins was the one collecting the fire wood. YMMV

One night, after our "run", which ended at a park in Albury, we got the
fire going (and the Bar-B-Que going to cook the food) and, about, maybe,
thirty minutes later, a Fire Engine from the Albury RFS showed up to put
out our Fire Bucket.

After talking to us and explaining that a Report had been made, they
said they HAD to act .... so spent 20 - 30 minutes fiddling about,
getting a couple of buckets of water organised to put the fire out ...
by which time we'd had our food and our drinks and were letting the fire
die so we could go home!

At least the buckets of water cooled off the Fire-Bucket so I could
stick it in the boot of my car!! ;-)

At first we prchased from a guyy who purchased wood from forestry
operatins along the Murray River, then he went to tree felers heaven.
by the time we ourchased it, it had at lease one year f seasoning.

Now the local tree felling oerations wil sell traier loads that you pick
up or delver if you buy 4 tonne load. Not so seasoned and you gn a pile
of thick bark into the bargain. we use the bark buried to define garden
paths and thus engage in the german wood comosting method.

Grate? Wood burners do not need a grate as wood fires will burn okay on a
bed of ash. coal burners do need a grate.

OTOH, when we purchased the hovel, the previus owner had a large open
fireplace(ouch carpets0 that had a large flatten U shapped grate that
they put "ogs" of wood one. we were reiably informed of this frompeole
who had been to arties they held. The exhaust was a large inverted
funnel. Smoke on the walls anyone.

We quickly ripped that out and put in the smallest sized Coonara slow
combustion model. it has anice glass window to watch the flames and has
fanforced air to draw the heat ot of the fire box and spread the heat
