Looking for recommendations of HIP or HIP-inspired recordings of
Robert Schumann's symphonies. Gardiner, Herreweghe, Harnoncourt,
Schönwandt, P. Järvi,...?

Thank you.

Gardiner. As (generally) a non-Gardiner fan, I inherited these and
though I ought to slog through them ... and was greatly impressed. Maybe
his best recordings?

If you mean Historically Informed by the early 20th centuary then why not
Klemperer - he has split violins to L and R with the woodwind clear. I
have the 1990 CD set in front of me!

I like zinman/tonhalle for these works. I think you could consider them hip influenced.

I wonder if you have his Beethoven cycle on Hanssler also. If so, what do you think of it?

I've always enjoyed Sir Roger's performances (beginning at the time of his EMI Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique release. So I have all the LvB Symphonies released on Virgin Veritas and Hanssler. I know I liked them, but since last listening to them several years ago, I'm at a loss to write anything specific about them. (These days I happy being able to remember how to return home.) When the opportunity arises I'll listen again.

Along the same lines, the Boult recordings. Sometimes he seems to be trying for a speed record. Klemperer's 2 &3 are so slow, the word speed would be a misrepresentation. Allegedly, Boult consulted Fannie Davies about correct Schumann performance as transmitted to her by Clara. Strange that the HIP crowd claims early 20th performance practices and techniques were so different, but not one of the conductors of Boult's generation ever said a word about it, except when he was asked if it was true that everyone performed Brahms along the lines of Max Fiedler, and he called it a lot of "rot." Probably the closest Adrian ever came to swearing.
