_The Book of Jhereg_ vy Steven Brust
https://www.amazon.com/Book-Jhereg-Steven-Brust/dp/0441006159/

Book number one of a five book fantasy series. I read the well printed
and bound trade paperback published by Ace in 1999. I do not know if I
am going to read any more book in the series as pure fantasy is not my
favorite.

This is a collection of three books. The story is quite good but is
just not my cup of tea. Still, I managed to finish the book. I thought
that I would like it due to the telepathic familiar(s) but they did not
do much for me. Maybe the main anti-hero just pissed me off with his
cavalier view on life and continuously murdering people.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars (I managed to finish it !)
Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (172 reviews)

It’s an at least _15_ book fantasy series. Plus three more which are
kinda-sorta related.

The MMPB dates to 1983.

It ain’t so pure. Among other things one of Vlad’s friends is a
vampire...

He’s an _assassin_. Murdering people is his _job_. Besides, the people he
murders don’t usually stay dead, unless the client pays extra.

do you ever give less than 4 stars?

Many times. And the dreaded one star also to a Lisanne Norman book.

The book is very good, it is just not me. But is is not _Ariel_ either.

and he moves away from the assassin's life in later volumes (I don't recall when exactly, also they do jump around in time a bit)

You mean aside from the one with literal time travel?

I don't think I've read that one. But I stopped reading the
series when I got seriously broke.

(Which one is it?)

Vallista, 2017.

From ebooks.com, $11.99.

From Overdrive.com, free if your library is a member. I don't remember where
you live exactly, but the San Jose library is.

You can read it out of sequence, because that's how it was written. (I mean,
it's a time travel story.)

Not that I'm shilling for Steve or anything ....

I love the books. I've read every Dragaeran book he's written (I think),
and a couple of others.

But I find it deeply ironic that a self-avowed (is that a tautology?)
Trotskyite is selling his wares for profit...

...and plays poker.

I suspect that he would be another in the group of authors whose works I
love that I would actually not like as people.

He once asked people to invest in a business, on his blog. One assumes he's
a realist and isn't expecting the perfect worker's paradise in this country
any time soo.

I was at Philcon when he was Principal Speaker, and in fact was on a panel
talking about his fiction, which he attended. He's great in person, and
makes a very explicit point of not talking politics when a large group is
present.

Steven Brust was guest of honor at ICON in Iowa City. As is the tradition
there, the opening ceremonies included a comedy skit by the Trans Iowa
Canal Company which, again by tradition, is based partly on the work
of the guest of honor. In this case the skit had Vlad Taltos as a
protagonist. At one point in the story Vlad, accompanied by another
character, had occasion to kill someone, which he did in an expeditious
manner. The other character protested, "You stabbed him in the back!"

Vlad seemed puzzled by the remark and replied, "His back was to me."

Mr. Brust was heard by someone nearby to exclaim, "Yes!"
