Well, Sparky ... and an Australian ... yeah, they can handle that
kind of negotiation.

Reminds me of various discussions on rec.org.sca, back in the
day, on whether the US government would be better run if the
candidates had to don armour, grasp rattan, and duke it out on
the field of honour.

I don't think we ever came to any conclusion, except that we'd
probably have younger leaders than what we had at the time (any
time you care to mention).

I've always thought things would go a lot faster and smoother in
Washington if there was always the chance the Jr. Senator from New
Jersey can (and is encouraged to) chin-check you for saying dumb
shit on the Senate floor.

Sen Booker is young and fit, but his opponent
might be armed, at least with a cane.

I think we are better off without that sort of thing.

Now, an Octagon in the Senate gym, for purposes of
settling "affairs of honor?" Hmmmmm....

Don't know, that is to be decided in the Capitaldome.

Mitch is a 78 year man with severe Polio damage as a child and with an
honorable discharge from the Army.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McConnell

Nancy is a 80 year old woman from San Fransisco with five kids who has
custom freezers for her ice cream.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Pelosi

Both are pretty tough people. It could be standstill.

Mitch is a 78 year man with severe Polio damage as a child and with an
honorable discharge from the Army.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McConnell
He had damage to his leg when he was about 2.
With a lot of medical care he got over it enough that he wasn't invalidated out of the draft

He enlisted in the Army Reserve (not the army) and got a medical discharge after 37 days officially for optic neuritis
(Allegedly his father contacted his senator to speed up the discharge and huffpost https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-is-mitch-mcconnell-h_b_137083 claims that there was a lot of communication between a senator Mitch had worked for and the commanding General of Fort Knox at the time. It says that there was need for an urgent discharge to let Mitch attend NYU. Mitch was discharged, never attended NYU and there's no record that he'd ever applied to attend

Interestingly Mitch's record has "not on file" on the section "Transcript of Court Marshall" compared to "n/a" for all the other sections without information, does that mean anything?)

It means you got hold of some bad info. Unless you are working from
memory.

It would almost certainly be "court-martial" (with or without the "-"
and/or capital letters), not "Court Marshall", if it were from a
/real/ document. Or a better memory.

"n/a" would mean "not applicable". Well, probably.

"not on file" would indicate that a file was missing. Paper files,
whatcha gonna do?

So you think there was a court martial but the records disappeared?
If you think that's the situation isn't that information that should be available to people deciding to vote for him?

(Frankly I'm dubious but the 2 different entries does raise questions - the answer might be as simple as "person doing the record came back after lunch and wrote something different" or "he couldn't be bothered checking")

That's a valid point -- it /could/ just mean that the files were
checked and no court-martial was found because there never was one.

I'd have to very much suggest this is your loss, especially as it would
seem rather a major portion of shared culture for any era post about 2005.

But can Nancy take Mitch?
If she's allowed to wear high heels into the arena, I bet she
can.
Reminds me of Adora Belle Dearheart's little scene in the Mended
Drum in "Going Postal".
I normally worry about the effect of head injuries when this sort of thing is proposed, but since your country is already renowned for the experience of having a President who had the reputation of "too much time playing football without a helmet" I defer to your greater wisdom :-)

You're asking a self-proclaimed minarchist and likely big-L Libertarian.

If it's anything other than "government should only run a court system
and a military which is specifically permitted to deal only with foreign
incursion, though that doesn't necessarily mean foreign /military/
incursion and thus it doesn't matter what corrupt swamp creature is

Yes, I'm aware that I didn't even include schools and roads in "what

In great swaths of the US, the city, county or other
municipal construct has effective control over the edge
of your property facing the public highway: an easement.
Other entities can have easements, of course, such asthe
companies who provide your utilities.

The homeowner still pays taxes on that land, is required
to keep it clear of ice and snow, gets hit for special
assessments for installation and/or repair of the sidewalk -
which is injury added to insult if one was on the losing side
of the "shall we install sidewalks?" vote - and, of course,
the homeowner can get sued for slips and falls so needs to
insure against that.

When I lived in Manhattan, my family owned an apartment building in Inwood
(aka 'upstate Manhattan). I had an apartment there, and when snow occurred,
it was one of my duties to shovel the sidewalk. You were required to do so
within 4? hours of snow ceasing.

I quickly learned to shovel a one-shovel width path first thing, to prevent
pedestrians from packing down the snow and making it harder to shovel.

After really bad storms, I'd have tenants offering to help. We were 'good' land
lords.

Where I am now, its 'sidewalks? what does this word mean?'. Snow involves
shovels, snow blowers, and the 'plow guy', who plows my secondary driveway for
$35 a pop. He also removes the ridge the town plow leaves at the bottom of my
primary driveway, but tends to f*ck up my lawn in doing so.

Here we call it a "Windrow", and I rather like the word.

but tends to f*ck up my lawn in doing so.

For a while there the city was removing those, but I am not sure that policy is still in place. I removed only one this winter, but whether the rest were removed by the city or helpful neighbors I don't know.

I also got to dig out a car stuck on a windrow this winter. Another box ticked off.

Sometime in the last 10 years I was bicyclingand I had to swerve into
traffic from the shoulder to avoid one of those loons. I slowed down to
ask him, "Why aren't you running against traffic?" He told me that,
because of the time of the day, that would put the sun in his eyes. If
he ran in the morning instead of the evening or any time in between he
wouldn't have put others out. There was a perfectly good park nearby he
could done circuits of. Nope, have to shuffle down the town's busiest
stretch of two-lane, with stretches that bridged some creeks, where thesidewalk and/or verge disappeared, being a hazard to navigation.

Before anybody starts whataboutism re: folks on bikes, I would
ride using lights, hand signals, obeying stop signs and stoplights,
with lights fore and aft and wearing a reflective vest like a flag-
waver on a construction crew. I was a real "Fred" on my "grocery-
getter" hybrid. It was a useful tool when I was out-of-work and carless,
and even during the periods I was working but had yet to buy a car.
I was using the road for transportation more than just exercise.
"Act like a vehicle" was my rubric, and that was the law.

You should be able to pull out to pass a road user on

then ring your bell from well to the rear, and again

I was fully prepared to "take the lane" when necessary, such as
overtaking someone running on the dividing line between the right-
most lane and the shoulder, or, more usually, avoiding road debris that
littered the shoulder. The area is heavily wooded, and fallen branches,
piles of leaves and sand left from the highway department dealing with
winter snow often made the shoulder a problematic "line" for a cyclist.
That particular stretch or road connects two business districts, has only
2 lanes and a 40 mph speed limit, which means people with no sense are
doing 50. A cyclist can take the lane if he checks behind him first, then
move right as soon as practicable. I had a mirror.

That mile of road also squeezes onto a couple of overpasses, with creeks
below, so that there is no shoulder and only a vestige of verge. It is hard
for a pedestrian, let alone a runner or cyclist to keep out of the traffic. It's a bad route for running, and I'd often take an alternate one when on
my bike.
