Yet he was reelected by a large landslide. Does that speak to the relevance
of the comments below or the inability of the American people to choose and
choose wisely?

How many people has he killed for no reason?
In 2000 Bush had not "killed for no reason"

Gore supported the bombing in Serbia where the US was not
threatened. (or does your opinion change when a 'dem administration
does the killing?)

That election, like this one, will once again will be choosing the
lesser of the two evils

It's no surprise that the right-wing corporate propaganda media is now
going all out to try and deify Ronald Reagan, calling him one of our
greatest presidents, in the same class as Washington, Lincoln and FDR.
This notion is so absurd it should hardly even need any rebuttal - but
living in the times we do, when right-wing extremism is in control of
just about everything in this country, unfortunately it does. Here's
what I see as the deficiencies of Reagan both as a man and as a
president, and why history will never judge him a great president. On
the contrary, history will see him as the shallow bungler who set this
country on its current self-destructive course.

1) For Reagan, 'Great communicator' was just another way of saying
'shallow actor'. He was the first president who was much more style
than substance, and as such the creature of his handlers. His
political philosophy was grounded in series of shallow anecdotes, and
his only memorable words were pre-scripted jokes or witty comebacks. A
second rate movie actor and TV host, he little more the photogenic
front man and PR spokesman for powerful corporate interests. While
always doing their bidding, he never posessed the insight,
intelligence or depth of character to understand what he was and what
he was really doing to this country. He was simply hired by the money
interests to play a role, and he played it. The best you could say
for him is that he was the most sincerely corrupt president in our
nation's history. At least, up until now.

2) He persued a one-sided tax, regulation and economic policies that
became little more than a way of transferring more wealth from the
poor and middle class to the very rich. By far the most enduring
legacy of the Reagan presidency is the exploding gap between rich and
poor in America. Since and because of Reagan, America has been two
countries - one affluent and always pampered, and one poor,
third-world, and completely ignored. It is the widening 'Reagan Gap'
in income and the resulting climate of deep injustice that it helped
foster, that is directly responsible for the strident political
climate and deep divisions in this country today. The destruction of
American democracy, and the loss of fundamental human rights that we
see today, can be traced directly back to Ronald Reagan.

3) Ronald Reagan hated working people and did everything he could to
destroy worker's unions, beginning with the air traffic controller's
strike. He hated gays and did absolutley nothing when the AIDS crisis
first broke out, refusing to even mention the word. He hated the poor
and homeless and used the exploding deficit, the direct result of his
tax cuts for the rich, to dramatically slash programs geared to
relieve the unjust suffering of the poor. He always preferred the
company of wealthy men, and always did their bidding. Nevertheless,
he styled himself a deeply religious man.

4) He should have been impeached for the Iran-Contra scandal, and gone
down in history with other fundamentally corrupt Republicans like
Grant and Harding and Nixon - but by that time he was so far gone
mentally and the next presidential election was coming up anyway, so
the Democratically controlled Congress mistakenly decided to spare the
country and let it slide. They would have spared the country much
more if they had impeached both him and his VP Bush.

5) He led the US miliary into a disaster in Lebanon, and then
compounded the mistake and sent exactly the wrong message to
terrorists by turning tail and running without any reprisals. He did
this once again when terrorists hyjacked an airliner. This policy of
appeasement under Reagan sent the wrong message to terrorists, and
ultimately resulted in the disaster of 9-11. More than any other
president besides Bush, Reagan's poor leadership is responsible for
the destruction of the World Trade Center.

6) He did not end the cold war - he only further militarized Amercan
society and enshrined the rule of the military industrial complex.
Every competent historian acknowleges that the fall of the Soviet
Union is the direct result of the long-term economic deterioration
within the Soviet Union, and not because of Reagan's military buildup.
In fact, Reagan's commitment to SDI made it more difficult for
Gorbachev to persuade his officials that arms control was in the
Soviet interest. If anything, Reagan only helped to prolong the cold
war, while at the same time infusing a sense of gingoistic patriotism
that only leads to increased weapons spending, wealthy war contractors
and future wars.

7) As the oldest and least qualified president up to that point,
Reagan lowered the bar considerably and made it possible to elect even
less qualified candidates, like George W Bush. He also made political
extremism acceptable, so that a president no longer needs to do what's
in the interest of the entire nation, but just follow the wishes of
his narrow and extremist base, while at the same time collecting
enough bribes from the rich to get himself re-elected. As a direct
consequnce, sensing how the system has been rigged and corrupted, most
of the electorate has either stopped voting altogether, or else
retreated to the patriotic certainty of political propaganda on hate
radio or fox news, where they don't have to think about what's really
going on in America.

66 Things to Remember About Ronald Reagan

David Corn, The Nation, June 6, 2004

http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=18874

Editor's Note: This list of "66 Things to Think about When Flying in
to Reagan National Airport" appeared in the Nation on March 2, 1998
after the renaming of Washington National Airport after Ronald Reagan.
As Corn says, "the piece remains relevant today - particularly as a
cheat sheet for those who dare to point out the Reagan presidency was
not all that glorious and was more nightmare in America than morning
in America."

The firing of the air traffic controllers, winnable nuclear war,
recallable nuclear missiles, trees that cause pollution, Elliott
Abrams lying to Congress, ketchup as a vegetable, colluding with
Guatemalan thugs, pardons for F.B.I. lawbreakers, voodoo economics,
budget deficits, toasts to Ferdinand Marcos, public housing cutbacks,
redbaiting the nuclear freeze movement, James Watt.

Getting cozy with Argentine fascist generals, tax credits for
segregated schools, disinformation campaigns, "homeless by choice,"
Manuel Noriega, falling wages, the HUD scandal, air raids on Libya,
"constructive engagement" with apartheid South Africa, United States
Information Agency blacklists of liberal speakers, attacks on OSHA and
workplace safety, the invasion of Grenada, assassination manuals,
Nancy's astrologer.

Drug tests, lie detector tests, Fawn Hall, female appointees (8
percent), mining harbors, the S&L scandal, 239 dead U.S. troops in
Beirut, Al Haig "in control," silence on AIDS, food-stamp reductions,
Debategate, White House shredding, Jonas Savimbi, tax cuts for the
rich, "mistakes were made."

Michael Deaver's conviction for influence peddling, Lyn Nofziger's
conviction for influence peddling, Caspar Weinberger's five-count
indictment, Ed Meese ("You don't have many suspects who are innocent
of a crime"), Donald Regan (women don't "understand throw-weights"),
education cuts, massacres in El Salvador.

"The bombing begins in five minutes," $640 Pentagon toilet seats,
African-American judicial appointees (1.9 percent), Reader's Digest,
C.I.A.-sponsored car-bombing in Lebanon (more than eighty civilians
killed), 200 officials accused of wrongdoing, William Casey,
Iran/contra. "Facts are stupid things," three-by-five cards, the MX
missile, Bitburg, S.D.I., Robert Bork, naps, Teflon.

--David Corn, Washington editor of the Nation, is author of 'The Lies
of George W. Bush: Mastering the Politics of Deception.'

"Different people have different opinions about the life of Ronald Reagan
but, there's one think I think everyone agrees on...

America will be forever in his debt."

The refutation was to Reagan being a Great President. So, are you
saying that the only people who can argue that Reagan wasn't a great
president, were people who were great presidents? So, on that note, I
can also say Jimmy Carter was a great president, correct? What have
YOU done greater than Jimmy Carter, who was a farmer, govenor, and
president. Have you done anything even remotely close to that? If
not, then that means you are illsuited to argue against claims that
Jimmy Carter was a great president. See how inane your response is?

Go ahead and bash someone that has achieved greater than you ever will.
So did Hitler. But I can still tell the truth about Hitler.

How
does it feel to know the person you cry about had more fame and fortune than
you ever will?
I'm not crying about him - you are. I'm just telling the truth about
him. I don't believe we should disrespect the dead - even someone
like Reagan. But neither do I believe that we should make up lies
about how great and good they were. It doesn't matter what I think of
Reagan personally - God is his judge and He has already judged
Reagan's life and rendered his verdict. What matters now is that we
who are still alive tell the simple truth about him rather than invent
fables because you need a hero to worship.

Put him down. Thats ok you are just showing your own lack of
success. A typical going nowhere bitter democrat.
He will have always been
more successful than you with more recognition. Just accept it. You are
second rate by far compared to him as far as success in life is concerned.
YOu bring up another reason why Reagan was really a terrible
president. He was the godfather of class warfare in America. He
introduced and made respectable an attitude in American politics where
anyone who disagreed with him and his extremist "bow down the the
rich" policies was automatically labeled lazy, unaamerican, a loser,
just jealous and probably a welfare cheat. Just like you, Reagan
thought only rich people mattered and should have influence in the
govenment and be able to express their opinion. Reagan ultimately
hated the working poor, and as a result he constantly denigrated their
contribution to American society and transfered more and more wealth
from the poor to the very rich. And today hateful right-wingers like
yourself are still conducting class warfare and following in his
hateful footsteps, as your ad hominum attack on me proves.

Great post and good summary. I think Reagan might also be the
president who started the down-hill slide of the media by encouraging
mergers and acquisitions and bestowing tax breaks, etc. This item
alone might be more damaging to America, in the long run, than all the
other items that you listed.

I believe Reagan also created the template for snaring blue-collar
workers into the Republican web. During his campaign I worked in a
railroad dispatcher office. I remember highly overpaid, unionized
conductors, switchman and engineers would spend hours sitting on their
dufs in the office, when they should have been working, singing the
praises of Ronald Reagan and saying how great things would be when
Reagan got in office and put the welfare queens to work. As they wiled
the hours away, a million dollar locomotive would be sitting in the
yard, idling, with a string of cars attached that should have been
delivered yesterday.

Reagan raised the technique of blaming others for your problems to an
art form and Republicans have been using this technique successfully
ever since.

Excellent post, made even better by the counterpoint,
or should I say honking bicycle horns (of the Marx

posting of empty whines. "There they go again." :)

Reaganites, keep honking! Hurrah!

You left the Unfinished 8th.
I'll take that as an invitation.

8) Reagan is responsible for furthering the cause of delusional,
satanic Anti-Christ worshippers and the conquering zionists.
He is responsible for death and misery in the Mideast and the US.
More than any US President he is responsible for souring and scourging
the "stew of discontent" that is the Mideast, and which eventually led
to the WTC disaster, the Iraq war, and ...
The Presidents preceding Reagan - Nixon, Ford and Carter - were
unanimous and unequivocal about the settlements in the occupied
territories - they are illegal and against the Geneva Convention.
But thirteen days into his presidency it was payback time to his
fellow delusional dispensationalists, who supported his election.
Reagan
reversed the US position, saying that the settlements were legal.

All that misery over a delusion.

"Uniter not a divider" is gone as well. He's doing so well, that he is

You don't hear "compassionate conservative" anymore either.
"Uniter not a divider" is gone as well. He's doing so well, that he is
not only dividing the two parties, but his own party has fault lines
running all over the place.
Ah, I forgot the US and the rest of the world...
There was just an article in Foreign Affairs about the fault lines in the
"Reagan coalition." The Reps. need someone more charismatic, smarter and
with more heart than Bush to repair those chinks.

Give him some credit. He's managed to unite the Iraqi Shia and Sunni.
That's no small feat.

"Ronald Reagan was one of the most controversial Presidents in the modern

Reagan’s own penchant for self-delusion has been widely documented.
He frequently convinced himself of historical truths on the basis of
old movies he half-recalled.

He pretended to one White House visitor to have participated in the
liberation of German concentration camps at the end of World War II
though he hand never even gone overseas as a soldier.

He entertained a strange fascination with the End of Days and was even
known to speculate that they might take place during his presidency.

He invented what he called “a verbal message” from the Pope in support
of his Central American policies, which was news to everyone at the
Vatican.

He announced one day in 1985 that South Africa--though still ruled by
the vicious apartheid regime of P.W. Botha--had somehow “eliminated
the segregation that we once had in our own country.”

Such strange pronouncements by the president of the United States
eventually grew to be considered so routine that rarely did anyone in
the White House ever bother to correct them.

The president simply had a penchant, one former senior adviser
admitted, to “build these little worlds and live in them.” One of his
children added, “He makes things up and believes them.”

What is more astounding is the fact that he convinced other people to
believe them too.

but, there's one think I think everyone agrees on...

America will be forever in his debt."

8)
Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot.

His writings and essays were not his original works.

Reagan is well-known for plagiarizing the works of others.

Not to mention having an entire staff of writers available.

Your assertion that he "never posessed...the insight, intelligence
or depth of character" is bullshit.

Reagan was an ideologue well before his governorship and a politician
through most of his life. He was known for his ability to give vivid
off-the-cuff talks on a wide variety of topics without preparation.

And some was just his imagination:

He had a staff of speechwriters when he was president. Prior to his
presidency he wrote his radio essays himself, wrote his speeches
himself, did his own research himself, and wrote his lecture notes
himself.

Apparently, he had you fooled.

Guess you wouldn't know a Marxist or left-wing fallacy if it bit you in
the ass. These days, the only left wing fallacies I hear are out of the
White House.

Of course that is using language accurately and not succumbing to the
idiotic Orwellian reversal of meanings.

Amazing.

The man's been out of office now for 15 years, and just *died* for
Christ sakes', but the left is *still* afraid of the man and his legacy.

Truly amazing.

So how long do you think the "right" will be afraid of Clinton and his
legacy?

Such a question assumes that Clinton actually possesses a legacy to be
afraid of, but I'll answer it anyway. Clinton's "legacy," such as it is
is rather much more the object of derision, rather than fear.

I'm quite sure that Reagan will be remembered positively long after
Clinton is reduced to a mere footnote in the history books.

Reagan will be remembered for his massive deficits, illegally selling
arms to Iran, 31 Iran/Contra convictions, creating and funding rightwing
death squads responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Central
American citizens and prolonging the Iran/Iraq war by selling arms to
both sides.

Clinton will be remembered for 8 years of prosperity which raised all
boats, not just those of the rich.
