Films I gotta see, pt. 86

Recently added about 50 titles to my gotta-see list, all at once. A big
injection of Fassbinder, for starters. So, the list is the longest it
has been in quite awhile.

The last 10 films I saw and crossed off: The Italian Straw Hat (1928),
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven (1975),
Skyfall (2012), Zazie Dans le Metro (1960), The Saddest Music in the
World (2003), Nymphomaniac 1 & 2 (2013), The Great Beauty (2013) and
Buffet Froid (1979). Liked Zazie the most...did not much like
Nymphomaniac 1 (frustrated with a homely, inept actress in all the sex
scenes).

Also recently saw and very much liked Closely Watched Trains, Les
Cousins and Open City, even though none of those were explicitly on my
checklist.

I really wish you would break these lists into bite-size chunks. There are numerous films in that list that I could comment on and in order to do so requires all sorts of cutting and pasting and deleting and so on. Plus, the larger number of films to comment on necessitates shorter comments.

I've seen about 20 of those, but of the ones I haven't seen I only counted about 8 I'd really care to see.

I do recommend the Japanese ones, particularly DRUNKEN ANGEL, STREET OF SHAME, HARAKIRI, RED BEARD, and KURONEKO, plus the Welles one, CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT. If ENDLESS DESIRE (1958) is the one I'm thinking of, by Shohei Imamura, that would be the one I've seen most recently (when Asia Society ran it earlier this year). I liked it a lot. On the surface it's a caper comedy, like BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET, but underneath it's a whole lot more, esp. when you see it as part of Japan's ongoing exorcism of wartime demons.

Sleuth: I recall a clever revenge ending, but I don't remember all the details. I should see this one again. I missed the remake.

Hot Fuzz: Follows the "If you pull out a goose in act one, you need to use it in act 3" rule. No, really. If thought Shaun of the Dead was funny (and I did) you'll probably like this one.
Don't Come Knocking I'm not a big Wim Wender's fan, but this one had some good moments. Tim Roth at his Tim Rothiest.

I was disappointed with Skyfall. Not much for old Bond fans to really
like. There is pretending of such in the movie.

I love Pasolini films, all things considered.
I swear there is a nod to Monty Python in Salo near the end. They did a
skit on Pasolini and always mentioned being influenced by his movies.
The skit they did was on a test match directed by Pasolini.

A must see film at the time in Melbourne.
I've been to that house and knew a person or two who had lived there.
It's the original house in the film the story is based on.
If I'm not mistaken I think I even heard the tragic story before the
movie was thought of from those connected. It's based on a true story to
clarify.

Somewhat...yeah, I haven't seen that one. That's the sort of film I
often pursue (late '60s, British, "dark," etc.), so it's entirely
possible I could enjoy that.

I just finished the last snippet of "Salvatore Giuliano" (1962), which
is temporarily free to stream on Hulu. It disappointed me. I was hoping
something more along the lines of an organized-crime saga, but instead
it's an extremely convoluted tale (based on fact) of a Sicilian
revolutionary. The political situation -- government vs. Sicilian
separatists vs. Mafia -- is very specific and doesn't have much
universal appeal, and the film is constructed such that almost none of
the characters are featured enough to create a lasting impression. The
title character himself doesn't appear in the film, except as a CORPSE.
With raw, documentary-like direction and a minimal score that goes no
further than occasional growling drones, the film loses any chance at
having any sheer sensuous appeal either. It was a bit of a chore to
finish this one.

I think he did, though he reversed it once and then "re-plonked" me
shortly thereafter.

In any case, surveying three people posting to a thread and finding one
of them trying to post about desirable films he's seeking and two others
trying to pick petty, vengeful fights about no tangible subject, I think
it's clear who the least likely "troll" is.

bipolar disorder, because he will disappear for months at a time and

I just finished the last snippet of "Salvatore Giuliano" (1962)

Having crossed this film off, I just gave my top 30 "films to see" a
rethink. It's one-third Japanese now and 19/30 based in what has become

Last night, I saw "Anna" (1967). If you're smitten with Anna Karina
and/or Serge Gainsbourg, this is a must-see. Otherwise, skip it. The
plot is simple and stupid: A fashion photographer (Jean-Claude Brialy)
accidentally snaps a picture of Karina's shy character, and becomes
obsessed with finding this exquisite vixen whom he can't identify. Turns
out she's his own employee, and he's too dumb to realize this because
she's not wearing her usual Clark Kent glasses in the shot. Most of the
film consists of the two leads just walking the streets, daydreaming
about love and singing Gainsbourg's quirky pop tunes. Gainsbourg (with
his usual devilish, cynical persona) also shows up onscreen to sing a

The two parts of Fritz Lang's "The Spiders" series have been on my
gotta-see list for four or five years now...I finally saw them last
night. Together, they add up to just 2:17 so they barely count as
features. OK, I severely overestimated my interest in these films, based
on other early Lang work that I loved. I really had to force myself to
finish watching. Hokey "Indiana Jones"-type material with disappointing
sets and visuals. Also hard to follow at times, probably due to lost
scenes.

Saw "Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?" over the weekend.

And I saw "Beware of a Holy Whore" last night, courtesy of a temporary
Hulu/Criterion freebie. More RWF. Enjoyed this one more than "Herr R.,"
perhaps just because it was much more visually attractive. Well lit,
with some bright colors. And Fassbinder had a knack for positioning
ensembles in interesting, complimentary patterns. The entire movie is
just an all-talk portrait of a film crew holed up in a Spanish villa
somewhere, impatiently waiting to receive film stock so they can begin
shooting. Fassbinder himself is in the cast, but does NOT portray the
director. The director is a seething, abusive blonde who reminded me a
bit of "Spike" from the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series. Romantic
conflicts (both homo and hetero) abound, along with a strange penchant
for people smashing bar glasses. Dialogue in at least four different
languages. Veteran actor Eddie Constantine has fun glowering in the
background and also gets to canoodle with recurrent Fassbinder muse
Hanna Schygulla, who delightfully flits about underwear-less in a little
white dress like an ice cream cone begging to be licked. I failed to
understand the relevance of the film's title.

Pouring another review blurb down the plughole.

Last night, I saw "Fever Mounts at El Pao" (1959). Sometimes titled
"Republic of Sin." I've been wanting to see this for quite awhile. One
of Luis Bunuel's most obscure films. It's an unusually straight project
for him but, happily, it's much more polished than his earlier
"straight" movies. No humor or cackling perversity here at all, just a
fairly mainstream tale of an idealistic government official whom
circumstance inches further and further into corruption. The setting is
a fictional island nation with a Cuba-like ambience. Suspicion of those
in power is, of course, a favorite Bunuel theme, and the presence of a
smoldering vixen (Maria Felix) who can bring great men to ruin is
another familiar element. Good performances from a cast that's
universally unknown to me. A bit more musical score (appropriately
"tropical") than one typically expects from Bunuel. Liked this much more
than expected, though it's clearly not among Bunuel's more important
films.

atmospheric cinematography. Not quite as good as "Onibaba" (same
director), but the best film I've seen in the past month or so. Further

I just finished the last snippet of "Salvatore Giuliano"
(1962), which is temporarily free to stream on Hulu. It
disappointed me. I was hoping something more along the lines
of an organized-crime saga, but instead it's an extremely
convoluted tale (based on fact) of a Sicilian revolutionary.
The political situation -- government vs. Sicilian separatists
vs. Mafia -- is very specific and doesn't have much universal
appeal, and the film is constructed such that almost none of
the characters are featured enough to create a lasting
impression. The title character himself doesn't appear in the
film, except as a CORPSE. With raw, documentary-like direction
and a minimal score that goes no further than occasional
growling drones, the film loses any chance at having any sheer
sensuous appeal either. It was a bit of a chore to finish this
one.

Most of Francesco Rosi's works are docu-dramas with a political
stance, rather than pure entertainment fiction.

They are very much embedded in Italian history and society so
maybe the average foreigner (esp. Americans) cannot understand
everything.

Saw this last night. Now THIS was absolutely marvelous. Only about 63
minutes long. Stop-motion puppet animation from...let me look up how to
spell his name...Ladislas Starevich. I think this was his only
feature-length film. Not only is the animation technically astounding,
but the story is fully engaging and surprisingly funny at times. In
fact, if the film has one flaw, it's that the extravagant physical humor
of the closing "Home Alone"-like sequence is juuuuust a bit more than
this limited medium can handle.

theatre some years ago.
He was famous for his abstract animation and may have a segment in
Fantasia or at least was copied for it, something abstract early in it.
He was also well known for a German cigarette commercial in the 30s that
showed marching cigarettes using stop frame animation.

I see a lot of shorts online. A few good ones I saw in the past week:
"Six Shooter" (2004 short by the In Bruges writer/director...I didn't
realize until after I finished watching that it won an Oscar!),
"Blackadder Back & Forth" (British comedy), "Padal Proshlogodnij Sneg"
(absurdist Russian stop-motion stuff). Saw all of those on YouTube. Give
'em a try.

Last night I saw "Z," the most generally renowned film on my entire
gotta-see list. I initially had a hard time getting immersed in this
one, because there are a lot of characters and none of them are fleshed
out enough to foster any emotional connection. But the machinations of
the political conspiracy plot eventually became fascinating. The
information provided is so dense that I found myself rewinding lines
much more than usual, just to get the facts straight in my head. And I'm
a big rewinder anyway, as my exasperated gf would love to tell you.

The epilogue wrap-up really tops it off beautifully. And the soundtrack
is quite good -- even if its Greek flavor is somewhat incongruous.

Seeing "Z" cuts my gotta-see list to 148 titles. And with "Z" gone, my
ranked top 30 of must-sees updates to:

Yup. And it *is* a great shot (and a great film) and thinking back what I think I meant was that I disagree with "spectacular shot" as a description because the shot is so natural, such an extension of the cinematography that it is almost anti-spectacular. It isn't awe-inspiring -- as many crane shots are -- because it's done so well and so organically that the effect rather than the process is what comes across.

The story was a bit more melodramatic than I typically like, and
cinematography was the major saving virtue for me. Lots of spectacular
work with a moving camera sweeping through crowds, corridors, etc.

That shot in the link was great, though I was particularly dazzled by
the chaotic camerawork during the scene where the girl contemplates
suicide. Perfectly captured her distraught panic.

I saw "Salon Kitty" (1976) over the weekend...actually not that bad. A
Nazi-run brothel in wartime Germany that serves to spy on its own.
Substantially better than "Caligula," I'd say, even though that film (by
the same director) is far more famous/infamous. It's a kick to see
Ingrid Thulin going wildly over the top in a way that Ingmar Bergman
would never allow. ;) I actually *did* get this one from Netflix, which
is pretty surprising. Especially since it was originally X-rated (not a
lot of actual sex...just boobs and bushes everywhere).

In a recent interview. Lawrence, the troubled front man for Go-Kart Mozart and couple of other great rock bands said he was in love with both the real Christiane F. and the actress who played her, which struck me as being a dodgy enough thing to say that I made a mental note to check out the movie if I got the chance. I remember it showing up a lot on VHS but I never got around to watching it.

Saw "Phase IV" last night...oddball, low-budget sci-fi from that golden
post-"2001: A Space Odyssey" era before "Star Wars" ruined things
forever. Two scientists and a pretty ingenue are holed up in a Southwest
desert laboratory, while organized, super-intelligent ants outside plot
to kill them and eventually take over the world. It's not a great film,
but it's much better than it sounds. Good '70s-synth score, plus Nigel
Davenport and Michael Murphy as the scientists.

On YouTube, there's a clip of a "lost ending" that is extremely
interesting to see but not necessarily good for the film.

I'm not expecting much from it, but I'm a big Wim Wenders fan, so.....

It gets shown on one of the premium channels (Starz, maybe), but I
recently started to watch and found it was pan-and-scan. Couldn't
tolerate that, when a director like Wenders is involved. So, some other
time. I know it's on YouTube, for starters.

Hell's Angels is the only film that has been on my gotta-see list longer
than Don't Come Knocking, so I obviously haven't rushed to see it.

Saw "The Lovers" (1958) and "The Hawks and the Sparrows" (1966) over the
weekend.

Not posting "formal" reviews here anymore but, in short, "The Lovers"
began with a high-quality portrait of a bored, pampered housewife, her
husband, her friend and her lover. Then it inexplicably turned into a
drippy, silly romance in the film's second half. Really frustrating. And
"The Hawks and the Sparrows" is STRANGE. A comic, religious/political
allegory about an old man and a young idiot walking down the road of
life with a talking "left-wing intellectual" crow. That's right...a
crow. I felt like I was missing some subtext of many scenes, but the
movie was so absurdly funny that it almost didn't matter. The DVD
version was kinda rough, with ugly subtitles and lots of visual
specks...Pasolini deserves better. Hadn't even heard of the DVD company
before.

Also saw "Bay of Angels," though it wasn't on my list. So well-made and
well-acted, but almost any movie about gambling follows that same arc of
the initial burst of luck followed by the descent into
desperation...I've seen it all before. And the lead characters' choice
of game (roulette) and betting strategies were so frivolous, it was hard
to even root for them. Both "Bay of Angels" and "The Lovers" featured
Jeanne Moreau, of course.

Happy End (1967)...a highly unusual Czech film, with a murderous-cuckold
story told in reverse a la Memento. Except rather than mere scenes
running in backward order, this one reversed exchanges of dialogue and
physical action too. A wonderful exercise for the mind...I was
thoroughly rapt throughout.

My Way Home (1978)...bleak, bleak Scottish coming-of-age film, the last
of a trilogy. Near-catatonic, impoverished boy (now a teen) meanders
from shaky home to home and eventually settles on the military as an
escape. More interesting for its evocative black-and-white
cinematography than for its story.

Manji (1964)...Japanese film about sexual (mostly lesbian) obsession. A
housewife becomes fixated on the temptress model she aims to sketch.
Turned a bit silly and over the top by the end. Sadly failed to be NSFW,
but the opening seduction scene is quite sexy.

Visitor Q (2001)...didn't like this at all. Barely had a story, and the
filmmaking aspects are near-nil. Just about shock value, mostly, as a
family does all sorts of depraved things to each other. A must for
lactation and incest fetishists.

The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)...another one that probably wasn't good
enough to be on my list. Mild Ealing comedy that's "sweet" rather than
funny. A little village tries to cut red tape and run the local railway
by themselves, while all sorts of contrived obstacles fall in the way.
No one has anything to do all day except worry about this trivial
stretch of track. Whatever faint humor mostly comes from cheap jokes
about old fools craving liquor.

And I think I added Boy Meets Girl (1984) and The Zero Theorem (2013) to
my list since I last posted. So my gotta-see list is at 155 now.

Crossed off some more titles from my gotta-see list in the past two
months....

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)...a love/hate movie of some controversy, I
gather. Two or three modern-day vampires living on the down-low do their
best to pursue a liquid diet via quiet, underground means rather than
going the flamboyant, "old school" route. I suppose this film wouldn't
really work if it existed in a vacuum and weren't intended as a sour
alternative to all the lousy, concurrent films about glamorous vampires
leading exotic, exciting lives. But those other films DO exist,
so...hooray. You can't go wrong with Tilda Swinton and John Hurt. Too
bad the male lead's profile as an elite rock star makes no sense at all,
given the shapeless, unappealing nature of his music.

The Fire Within (1963)...a well-made but rather drab Louis Malle film
about a socialite alcoholic trying to stay straight while troubled with
suicidal thoughts. I grew very tired looking at the actor's dead eyes
and expressionless face. I coincidentally saw the same gent just four
days later in another French classic (Purple Noon) where his persona was
strikingly different.

Hot Fuzz (2007)...fun action-comedy-thriller from the "Shaun of the
Dead" team. Simon Pegg is a fanatically committed London policeman who
gets re-assigned to the boonies and finds the town's doings aren't
nearly as sleepy as expected. I enjoyed the early comedy scenes a lot
more than the violent final act. There's one droll casting choice that
almost spoils the plot.

Ratcatcher (1999)...interesting Scottish coming-of-age film that,
admittedly, hasn't stuck strongly in my memory even though I enjoyed it.
Not an awful lot of plot...more episodic. A bit reminiscent of the
acclaimed Bill Douglas trilogy about an impoverished, mistreated boy,
but with some extra surreal touches. Extraordinarily well-directed for a
debut feature...Lynne Ramsay's expert pacing and shot choices are
consistently impressive.

The Music Room (1958)...Satyajit Ray classic with a story arc that
somewhat reminded me of "The Magnificent Ambersons." Passing years are
cruel to a rich merchant destroyed by his vanity. His mansion falls into
disrepair as he squanders his fortune on sustaining appearances as an
impresario who hosts elite concerts in his home. The traditional Indian
music is great, particularly a closing sequence with an alluring female
dancer.

Cowards Bend the Knee or The Blue Hands (2003)...a typical Guy Maddin
film paying homage to the silent era. No dialogue, only intertitles.
Extravagantly stylized with a sepia-like tone and woozy iris shots. The
film's look will tire out most viewers. Complex plot involves a hockey
player, abortion, revenge and murder. Some obvious overlap with "The
Hands of Orlac" and various horror films about wax museums.

Some Call It Loving (1973)...a terrible attempt at kinky titillation,
starring the late Zalman King (who later had a lot more success with
this sort of thing). King, who just blankly gazes throughout, portrays
an improbably wealthy idler who pulls jazz gigs in near-deserted clubs
while housing a small circle of women who engage in dull sexual
role-playing that rarely goes beyond a PG rating. One scene with a nude
cheerleading routine is as good as it gets. Mia Farrow's sister Tisa
gives an embarrassingly awful ingenue performance as a former sideshow
attraction who has been roused from an extended "Sleeping Beauty"-like
hibernation and relies upon King to re-introduce her to the world. The
only reason to see this movie is a small role for the young Richard
Pryor, giving an obviously well-researched performance as a rambling,
incoherent junkie.

Porcile (1969)...a strange Pasolini film that was pretty tough to sit
through. Typically, there's a heavy focus on fascist themes. Its
peculiar events are hard to even recap...two nearly unrelated stories
are intertwined. There's an inarticulate young vagabond who wanders
around a desolate volcanic landscape in ancient times, having a few
brutal experiences amidst some more trivial doings. And then Jean-Pierre
Leaud plays a contemporary, wealthy heir who'd rather hang around with
pigs than his girlfriend. Leaud is poorly dubbed in Italian. Meanwhile,
his industrialist father indulges a rivalry with a Nazi-sympathizer
friend.

Black Test Car (1962)...seemingly a grim sequel to director Yasuzo
Masumura's earlier "Giants and Toys," "Black Test Car" is also a movie
about a far-fetched corporate rivalry. But this one is about selling
cars rather than caramels. "Black Test Car" gets described as a satire,
but it has few, if any, laughs. Strange, since "Giants and Toys" is
wonderfully funny. The action follows two companies becoming
increasingly corrupt and desperate in seedy attempts to find out the
other's marketing plans. Blackmail, sabotage, prostitution...it's all
here. I was disappointed at the shortage of humor, but this is a good,
solid film.

My gotta-see list is at 148 now, because I've recently added "Yo Yo"
(1965) and "God Help the Girl" (2014).

The amazon.co.uk release of Hawks and Sparrows (it's called that there)
looks as if it is a lot better. I've never seen this movie before,
though my local mailing service has a fair few but not this. But there
is at times something medieval in his methods in bringing out a story,
not conventional film thinking. Allegorical representation is about
content within a confined frame of a sort, before you could rely on film
moving in time to show content. Or maybe Italians did things
differently because they knew so many other people couldn't speak that
language.

A fresh edition of my films-to-see list. It's close to the same size as
the previous time I posted it (whenever that was), because I've
subsequently added almost as many films as I've crossed off. These
titles are about 25% "new."
