I don't think they're actually related. Ch4 has more ties with the Beeb
than with Ch5, doesn't it?

I watch little on Ch5 - we couldn't get it at all in my Kent village - I
was annoyed when two of the soaps I'd got hooked on shifted there :(

I think 4 gets some of the Licence Fee money as it makes and shows some
prog.s that aren't commercially viable (or something like that).

5 is, I think, part of the stable that includes 5 USA (FreeView 21), 5
Star (30), 5 Spike (31), and possibly some others (Maybe CBS Justice
(39)?), with 5 Select (55) doing I think highlights from them all.

Which village was that? (I think Ch5 might be on one of the main
multiplexes now. Not that I watch it much.)

Bredgar.
I think some villagers could get it by pointing their aerials at Dover
instead of Bluebell Hill but that wasn't an option for me as the church
tower just across the road got in the way.

A chap whose mother lived in the village was in a (short-lived) British
soap shown on Ch5. A few villagers remembered him from his school days
there but he seemed surprised, when chatting my up in the pub, that I
didn't know who he was.

Long before we'd heard of The Meaning of Liff - possibly even before it
was published - my daughter and I came up with a series of what we
called Destination Definitons. Unfortunately, I never recorded them and
now can't remember most of them but "going to Flimby Station" meant
getting very drunk (don't ask why, but no, it wasn't me!) and "going to
Blue Hand" meant having a rather inadequate meal (my mother's portions
tended to be very skimpy.)

Long before we'd heard of The Meaning of Liff -
I saw a sketch in a Cambridge Footlights Revue, written and performed by
Rob Buckman and Russell Davies, in which two chefs recited a long recipe,
incorporating as many British place-names as would fit the theme of
cookery. The final words were "but Chippenham Wrexham".

Which reminds me: have umrats noticed that the Canals and River Trust
advertising on ITV a lot at the moment? It's a strange little ad with a
robot floating through space. Their web site invites donations and says
that 100% of these will be used "to make life better by water" but it
looks to me as if quite a large chunk is being spent on expensive TV ads.

When we spot something we want to watch, we record it. But when we've
missed it, we have to rely on an App (currently experimenting with a
Firestick) to watch again. But then if it's anything but the Beeb there
are advertisements, sometimes lasting as long as the scrap of show in
between. Does anyone know how to deploy the double arrow rightwards
button on these?

On my TalkTalk setup (I haven't had the Virgin long enough to know how it works) *if* you record it, you can FF through the ads. If you 'My Five' or whatever, there seems to be no way to get rid of them :-(

If you wait til late in the evening, there seem to be few or no
advertisers willing to pay My5 for slots, and programmes are often
advert-free. Late enough, they even give up inserting their own trailers.

On my TalkTalk setup (I haven't had the Virgin long enough to know how it works) *if* you
record it, you can FF through the ads. If you 'My Five' or whatever, there seems to be no
way to get rid of them :-(
If you wait til late in the evening, there seem to be few or no
advertisers willing to pay My5 for slots, and programmes are often
advert-free. Late enough, they even give up inserting their own trailers.
Same on All Four. We've been catching up with Catch-22 with barely a
commercial to be seen.

Ooh, yes - good point. The first time I came across this was
Britain's/World's Strongest Man - (Channel 4 and one of my Guilty
Pleasures...)

Haven't had Virgin long enough to comment, but on my TalkTalk box,
it was fine *if I had recorded it* to FF past the ads, but there was no
way (that I could find) if you went to 'My 5' or whatever, to see anything
you had missed. If it wasn't too long ago, and the programme has an arrow
in a circle on the Guide, you can scroll back through time and watch it -
IIRC that also allows you to FF.

I noticed, the first time I tried, that films watched on the ITV catch-up
service had no adverts. I don't know if this is still the case.

I have far more recorded stuff to watch later I am in danger of running out
of disc space (again) and may need to cull or transfer things elsewhere.

There is an option to pay a fee to have no adverts. You get a month's free
trial, so perhaps you did that. I did that, but decided it wasn't worth it
(to me).

Nope, I did once inadvertently get a free trial on Amazon Prime (too easily
done IMO) but I've never done it on a catch-up channel.

Incidently, has anyone managed to find the catch-up things for Pick and the
CBS channels which they keep advertising? Don't seem to be available on my
freesat box (but it is very old now and no longer does iplayer).

I think you need NOW tv to get Pick catch-up and Freeview Play to get
the CBS ones. (But I could be wrong.)

Ah, I think NOW is on my blueray machine, will have a look.
I'm sure the ads say both are available on Freesat - it may be time to get
a new box.

I've not seen Pick on my Now TV box, but then I don't tend to bother
looking for stuff due to the lack of time for watching anything and
the queue of stuff waiting to be watched.

Which reminds me: have umrats noticed that the Canals and River Trust
advertising on ITV a lot at the moment?
<Major swerve>

Mention of canals reminds me of my current rant - no doubt somerats
would care to join me in it. Some tv channel is currently touting a new
series when "national treasures" are filmed on a boat.

National treasures?! NATIONAL TREASURES?!! Sir David and Dame Judy and
a few others deserve to be outraged. I won't name the so-called celebs
involved (only partly because I can't remember all their names) but even
if you haven't seen the trailers you'll know who they are because
they're a subset of the people who are always involved in this type of show.

Bah!

Bah!
The original National Canal-Boating Treasures were Tim West and Prunella
Scales. Tim is deeply affecting when talking about this - Prunella has
Alzheimers and gets terribly anxious at times, but being on a boat is
very calming and they can relax and enjoy themselves.

I know who the "real" National Treasures" are because I hear them in
their own special section on "Dead Ringers." Sadly, I suppose we've seen
the last of Dead Ringers: what's the point of trying to satirise live
politics when the whole of the rest of the world is already creased up
with laughter at the real thing? Argentina is a bastion of good common
sense in comparison and I notice a sort of what-goes-around-comes-around
glint in the eye of the people I meet nowadays.

"You've seen the TV programme!  Now eat the..."
(No, I haven't seen it - but then I'm not sure I've heard of Channel 5
either)
Channel 5 is wot I often buy in the airport shop on my way out of the
country. HTH etc.
Rotflmao.  I think its spelt Chanel in that instance.
Not 'canal', then? Oh, the smell of it.
Which reminds me: have umrats noticed that the Canals and River Trust

robot floating through space. Their web site invites donations and says
that 100% of these will be used "to make life better by water" but it
looks to me as if quite a large chunk is being spent on expensive TV ads.
It would be even better spent on dams. British Waterways never seemed
to have these problems.

Erm, but, have I missed something ? Dams and reservoirs belong (or
belonged) to the water utility companies, not the transport outfit once
known as British Waterways ? I believe United Utilities, although now
a private firm, owns most of the mid-Welsh dams once built by various
municipalities, for instance.

What's been puzzling me about this dam situation is all these dam pumps.
Surely the purpose of a reservoir - there's even a hint in the word - is
to store (in this case) water. And there's no point in storing something
if you can't get at it. And this particular reservoir _does_ have
outlets: they give them fancy names like "sluices", "spillways", and so
on. We've had plenty of shots of them in high spate (or, more likely
with lazy news these days, the same few shots repeated many times).

So why do they need all these extra pumps to get the water out?

I'm sure there is an answer; they wouldn't be using all these pumps if
it wasn't necessary. But what bugs me is that the _question_ seems so
obvious, but I've not seen or heard anyone asking it.

To get the water out faster than the existing resources so the water
level drops down to a much lower level than normal to enable a full
inspection. Dropping at the normal rate would not be adequate with new
water entering the reservoir every time it rains.

picked out the orange ones because she knew I liked them.

I wasn't too impressed by the "experts". I'm *sure* that orange Smarties
tasted of orange. When I was at uni, my lovely mum once sent me a packet
which only contained orange ones - she had bought lots of tubes and just
picked out the orange ones because she knew I liked them.
That is the worst excuse I have come across in a long time :-(

I can’t believe no one else has admitted to watching “A Wonderful World of
Chocolate”, Sundays channel 5, 21.00 - 22.00.
Sincerely Chris
May I ask in what sense 'chocolate' is 'OT'? That is not the umratic
tradition. We do have a chocolate bunker after all.
