Reminds me of bullies who sneak into playgrounds and bust all the
kid's equipment. You know, "real" men. One has to wonder what pleasure
people like that take at destroying other people's enjoyment.

Nah, they haven't won. We post here when we feel inclined, we held an
HNO recently despite them and their hatred.

I really do not believe it is them who still post - I feel sure I
know/guess who it is but that is not done in the same vein. Note,
there have been totally reasonable discussions here from time to time
recently, not as many posts per day but that is a usenet thing. Though
in other groups I notice a few wanderers wandering back to usenet.

Of course you have no need to apologise or explain yourself in
terms of your beliefs. There are (or were) strong religious believer
here, agnostics (I'm one) and atheists. At times the discussions on
that and politics got heated, but the adults in the room had enough
sense to cut it out once it got personal.

When I was 7-8 years old, my late father warned me about discussing
religion and politics in public. He told me it always leads to hard
feelings because BOTH are ideological issues with no correct answer . .
. but are strongly held beliefs by many that cause bruised feelings if
contracted over and over.

I was involved in many political arguments here, and that was a
mistake. I eschewed the religious debates for the most part, other than
arguing with James that he ought to let others believe what they want .
. . we never agreed that freedom of worship (or lack thereof) shouldn't
be attacked and/or mocked incessantly. I understand his urge to do so,
but I felt he'd made his point multiple times. I didn't see that need
for never-ending exchanges like "I went to church Sunday" rebutted with
"You're a fool. I believe in teapot orbiting Pluto." That said, I miss
James because he was an intelligent debater with a good scientific
background. db is missed as well. And a dozen other intelligent
posters who had enough and left.

Anyhow, if the 4-5 of us left can keep things more or less civil,
then it's still a good place to post.

organized religion) will leave you alone if you are not interested . . .
at least after they give you their sales pitch and you tell them
politely you are not interested.

On the other hand, some atheists (which I consider a religion of
sorts) insist that you must think like they do or be mocked until you
do. As you know, I had this discussion numerous times with him. I'm an
agnostic, but even that was not allowed and needed to be mocked.

I don't believe a god created the universe in 7 days, or any of the
other stories told to us by other organized religions. Neither do I
believe the theory that a speck so small you can't see it popped into
existence from nothing, blew up and created everything we can see within
13.7 billion light years. I simply don't know, and neither does anyone
else. But according to some atheists, I must believe that theory or be
mocked incessantly.

What's the difference in believing in any of the religions or the
big bang theory? Same thing. They are all theories . . . and we can't
know the "un-knowable."

even longer. They must have a different mechanism for spreading the
word instead of going door to door. My parent's always listened to the
opening salvo for 2-3 minutes and then politely said they weren't
interested . . . and the JWs thanked them and went away. However,
they'd be back next month to try again.

We had a neighbour who was splitting wood when I was 8-10 years
old. A pair of overly aggressive Jehovah's Witnesses wouldn't take "not
interested" for an answer from him one month. He literally chased them
out of the yard with an axe! Really. But that was in the 1960s and
nothing came of it . . . except they skipped his house on their monthly
recruitment drives from then on. Guess he had to make a point. He was
an agnostic like me, but I wouldn't chase people with an axe. Gun is
better! :-) Except I don't have one anymore. :-(

They, and the Mormons, realised houses are empty during the day now,
both gone to work. They became a pest in small stores with captive
staff. A couple of years ago I had mail from the JWs - they had come
into the building as far as the key pad and taken names and numbers
from there, except the number attached to a name does not equal the
number of their unit, for security reasons. So when I received this
letter with the wrong number on it, I figured before I opened it.

I took a big red felt chip pen and wrote THERE IS NO GOD! return to
sender. Saw the mail man a few days later and he said the sorting
department wanted to thank me for a good laugh :)

A friend told me of her father who was painting the side of the house
when they arrived. He said to them if they wanted to talk to him then
they had to work and put brushes in their hands. He tuned his mind
out while they helped him finish the job :)

James wasn't fervent. Heck, even the fervent door to door religious types will go away if you slam the door in their face. They don't shout personal attacks through the closed door insinuating that you're delusional or looney tunes because you don't share their beliefs. At some point, he should have realized he wasn't accomplishing anything and just agreed to disagree.

I don't know... the discussion has been pretty sporadic. I've been contributing a bit lately in as 'normal' a tone as possible and it's been quite fun! The retirement countdown has been as fun as heck. As LB indicated we even had a social gathering a little while ago. Stick around HRM Resident, we value your comments!

Oh, I ain't going anywhere! I guess I didn't express myself
properly. I just read what LB and Donna had to say as well. Sure,
there are 4-5 still posting here, although it's a pale comparison with a
few years ago. Remember the Sunday Shopping debate! That was fun! And
many others with multiple posters offering their thoughts on the topic
of the day. Now when you find something interesting AND related to HRM,
be it Cornwallis, the Bluenose refit, health care, you name it . . .
there are one or two posts and it runs out because all 4-5 of us pretty
much know the others' views on most topics.

I understand why Donna has better things to do. I watched Jack, in
particular, post crude insults directed at her son. He was asked to
stop, and instead he doubled down. He also took every chance possible
to attack LB, James and anyone else. It was clear to me 10-15 years ago
he was a not-too-bright troll. Carter was better at it in that he'd
suck one of us into what appeared to be an innocent conversation and
then flip to one of his (in his mind) excellent interrogation
techniques. Usenet is a lot of things, and so is free speech. However,
I didn't come here to play games with a self-proclaimed military
interrogator who bragged he could and would beat the truth out of
people's mothers. He's good at leading questions, rhetorical questions,
putting words in other people's mouths and the list goes on. By some
reports he's now dead which, if true, makes Canada a slightly better place.

The problem I have with filters, although I now use them 100%, is
that you have to filter the thread to be effective. We could be
discussing what is the best restaurant in HRM and along comes one of the
trolls and adds a vile comment that'd make an Alabama cracker puke, and
then the thread is dead. So, yeah, filters work, but tend to throw the
baby out with the bathwater.

I intend to stay around . . . I'm just disappointed that 2-3 bored
low-brow racists were able to cut the active posters here from 20-30
down to 4-5. As hard as we tried to ignore them, filter them, engage
them, etc, it didn't work. The proof is in the current number of posts.

LB says they, or some imitator, is still posting as them. I
wouldn't know because of the filters. It's too bad James left, as he
was able to tie them up for days trying to defend their stupidity. Such
is life!

Keep posting . . . I check here every morning and still find
pleasure in chatting with the 4-5 remaining posters who are civil and
polite.
