New title sequence... it's not getting any better.

Tiger, tiger burning bright

In the forest of the night

What immortal hand or eye

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Not Stephen Moffat and his attempt to turn Doctor Who into a children's
sit-com.

Even The Sarah Jane Adventures could do better than this.

Not only is Moffat asking the viewer to believe that overnight the whole of
London is turned into a forest of trees but it's the entire planet, oceans,
seas, deserts, yes, deserts and all which are totally over run with plant
life. And then everyone is going forget about the fact that it ever even
happened a day later, despite it being broadcast and recorded on every
single TV station, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and mobile phone in existence.

Was this episode supposed to be a joke or has Moffat gone stark raving
bonkers?

I will not have my intelligence completely insulted.

Not only was there no explanation as to how the trees and other plant life
could have grown so fast without exploding (remember Terror of the
Vervoids?), where they got the soil and nutrients from in the middle of a
concrete city let alone a desert, and how they became not only sentient but
clairvoyant as well but no plot justification was given for the return of
the girl's sister at the end of the story either.

Where's the science behind Oxygen stopping something from burning? It's
Carbon Dioxide which does that. Don't they teach chemistry any more for
GCSE?

The trees which were downed in Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 weren't hit by a
solar flare. They were flattened by a meteor which sucked out the air
surrounding them when it scraped the edge of the earth's atmosphere and
narrowly avoided hitting the planet.

If the sun was even remotely capable of sending out a mass ejection of that
magnitude directed at earth the EMP would have knocked out every satellite
and piece of electrical equipment and transmission grid on the planet and it
would have been detected by Earth based observatories long before the girl
drew a picture of it.

So it's assuming that a mass of hydrogen the size of the moon hits the earth
and reacts with the oxygen the trees have provided to from water, right? The
size of the explosion would have been greater than every nuclear bomb
exploding at the same time. It would have destroyed everything and everyone
on the surface of the planet as well as wiping out all the breathable air.

I'll give it one mark for locating the Natural History Museum correctly on
Cromwell Road, although the interior looked nothing like it, and another
mark for remembering the wolves at London Zoo and freeing the tiger from its
captivity. The last one I saw there was pacing back and forth in front of a
glass screen and didn't look very happy about it. It can also have a bonus
point for getting the direction to Trafalgar Square right.

What was that old addage again?

NEVER WORK WITH CHILDREN OR ANIMALS.

After this episode you can add plants to that as well.

The acting from the kids was pure pantomime. OMG, I've not used that word in
a review since RTD left.

3/10

Looks like most of next week's plot for the season finale has been pulled
completely out of thin air as well without any proper development or
foreshadowing either.

It would be nice to say that any of this was wrong. For most of the episode I was thinking "magic trees out of nowhere? That's an interesting premise - shame about the kids". Then it got onto the explanation for flame-retardant trees, and before long I thought the bad science would be enough to make my head explode - Who is hardly sci-fi in any sense that invokes, well, science, but even by Who standards there are few episodes that have introduced and yet so horribly mangled scientific concepts since The Tenth Planet.

I could have put up with the forest and the bad science if the little girl
had been revealed to be an alien that wanted to save the earth and her
sister was the actual forest or something like that but it didn't even do
that. The story was complete and utter bollocks and was used as nothing more
than a vehicle for Moffat to insert his Carry On Teacher gags.

Where was the explanation for the girl's sister returning home? The event
was pulled completely out of thin air just to have a happy ending. Any
decent writer would have taken the viewer through her journey not had her
appear in the last few seconds from inside a bush. Was she playing hide and
seek or something? Why did she run away? Did she run away? Was she abducted?
Why have her in the story at all. Why couldn't any other kids or humans hear
the trees? Why could she? What was the purpose of the girl's mother? She
didn't add anything constructive to the plot or characterisation. Why didn't
any of the other kids parents show up?

What possible evolutionary advantage would you have puking up part your brain

Doctor Who like Star Wars is firmly science fantasy not science fiction. It
doesn't play by the same rules as shows like Star Trek.

Which is why I don't mind it producing complete fantasies. It's when it tries to give scientific explanations and thoroughly mangles them as it did here that I start getting headaches. They never tried explaining why the Ood looked like Ood, they just passed it off as part of the fantasy. The rules are different when evoking real events like the Tunguska airburst and adding fantasy causes, or when so egregiously misusing such concepts as the solar wind, solar flares, or the role plants have in supplying oxygen.

Tiger, tiger burning bright

The poem is trying to reconcile a merciful god with a god that created lambs and
tygers such that tygers have to rip apart lambs to survive.

When the tiger shows up, it's the soldier-boy PE teacher that saves Clara
without ripping apart the tiger. The guy trying to find wonder in the everyday
world around him

Even The Sarah Jane Adventures could do better than this.
This is another unsuccessful attempt to fuse two stories into one. One story is
a fairytale with fairies dancing around a young queen Medb invoking the spirit
of the forest to save the queen and her people.

The other was about Danny explaining that he didn't need any 'spark' in his
life; he had tried that and found it wanting. Instead he found wonder in the
mundane that Clara is ignoring. (7 Faces of Dr Lao: marvel of life

That's the result of mashing together two different stories into one. The show
doesn't let Danny travel in Tardis so story has to take to place in contemporary
London, but it's hard to accept the magic and subsequent amnesia in London
rather than, say, Androzani Minor or Metebelis 3.

the girl's sister at the end of the story either.
They showed the sister's eyes in the bush, and then the bush transforms with a
burst of fairies and spirits of the trees into the sister. So part of the forest
magic is the sister was recreated/rescued/resurrected/whatever as a reward to
the faithful princess Medb. I didn't follow the in-story explanation of the
fairies: like much else they got jammed in roughly because they have two
different stories for one plot.

It sounds like oilwell blowout specialists: they put out oilwell fires by
exploding a bomb in the fire to use up all the oxygen at once and snuffing out
the fire. Sort of, but not really, fits.

So it's assuming that a mass of hydrogen the size of the moon hits the earth

Plasma and gas are much less dense than moon rock. A hydrogen ball the mass of
the moon would be much larger, like hundreds? thousands? millions? time the Moon
diameter. That means just a small fraction would hit the Earth. Actually the
earth is already hit by these eruptions on a regular basis with our magnetic
field and upper atmosphere dealing with it.

There won't be a signficant EMP if any. You create an insignficant EMP everytime
you flip a light switch. Even a large EMP can be stopped by a thick enough
Faraday cage. Computer cases and many other electronic cabinets are thin Faraday
cages to block EMPs from the electronics from disrupting other devices.

Ugh... had a nice reply, and then accidentally hit Reply rather than
followup. Sorry for the random email, Bruce!

Anyway, for the rest of the group...

Minor flares interrupt satellite transmissions all the time. I used to
work at a radios station, and remember having to provide programming for
5-15 minute windows when sun activity would interrupt a feed.

That being said, I'm sure strategic locations (at least in most Western
nations) are hardened against EMPs because of nuclear weapons fears,
real or imagined.

If a flare packed enough punch to disrupt all electronics on the planet,
we probably would have much more to worry about other than lack of
electricity and our gadgets.

It's random fluctuating electrical fields in the plasma and ionisation caused by
high energy photons and particles. Satellites are above the atmosphere and so
above the protection from radiation; ionisation builds up static charge until it
can discharge as well as damaging component molecules. Farther satellites are
also exposed directly to solar plasma.

Radiation ionises the upper atmosphere which produces radio static on discharge
between the Earth and satellites.

Why didn't the magic trees protect Earth from the solar flare that had forced the Ark to flee Earth with humans and their alien servants?

Or maybe the trees did intervene, but the Ark personnel didn't notice, having fled long before the climax!

I'll give it one mark for locating the Natural History Museum correctly

another mark for remembering the wolves at London Zoo and freeing the

can also have a bonus point for getting the direction to Trafalgar
Square right.
OTOH the walk from the Natural History Museum to Trafalgar Square would

Corner, Buckingham Palace, the Mall, Trafalgar Square.)

The area round the Palace would've been swarming with soldiers, mounted
police, etc., stopping everyone, making sure that no terrorists takes
advantage of this happening to assassinate the royal family! We didn't
see any of that.

I'll give it one mark for locating the Natural History Museum correctly
on Cromwell Road, although the interior looked nothing like it, and
another mark for remembering the wolves at London Zoo and freeing the
tiger from its captivity. The last one I saw there was pacing back and
forth in front of a glass screen and didn't look very happy about it. It
can also have a bonus point for getting the direction to Trafalgar
Square right.

End of episode: A magic bush dissolves, releasing Mave's (SP?) long missing sister. I'm betting that the trees kidnapped or transformed much of humanity, including the residents of the palace. This would explain their absence from the episode.

Why? For what motive? Maybe she was hallucinating. Did you watch episode 1
of Agent's of SHIELD. Agent's shows no sign of improving but it was still
better than this weeks pile of tosh from Moffat.

Here in Wisconsin (and many other places in the States), most doors on
houses have the primary wood or steel door, which normally opens in.
Then they also have a storm/screen door which normally opens out.

Although I have to say, I very rarely see a storm/screen door when I
watch Dr Who. :)

It has to do with the hinges. Cheap doors use pin hinges that are exposed on the
side the door opens to. If these doors openned out, thieves could take the pins
out in less than a minute and take the door out of the frame.

More expensive hinges don't have exposed pins and can open in either or both
directions.

The reason why most front doors open inwards is because you don't want to be
sued if you open your door outwards and it hits someone walking down the
pavement in front of your door or standing in front of it waiting to be let
in.

You could be right for an inner-city appartment building, but most
suburban houses are well back from the footpath. Anyone knocking on my
front door is most likely a moronic salesperson who would deserve to be
hit by the door if it opened outwards (or soon idiotic "trick or
treaters' who ignored the "Go Away" sign), but unfortunately it opens
inwards.

Opening the door towards yourself as the home owner is perhaps also
related to some sort of tradition of "welcoming visitors" ... sort of
an "arms open wide" type of thing.

OTOH the walk from the Natural History Museum to Trafalgar Square would
take them right past Buckingham Palace. (Knightsbridge, Hyde Park
Maybe the trees were blocking their way or the Palace was more heavily
guarded from the inside.

Tiger, tiger burning bright
In the forest of the night
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
Even The Sarah Jane Adventures could do better than this.
Not only is Moffat asking the viewer to believe that overnight the whole of
London is turned into a forest of trees but it's the entire planet, oceans,
seas, deserts, yes, deserts and all which are totally over run with plant
life. And then everyone is going forget about the fact that it ever even
happened a day later, despite it being broadcast and recorded on every
single TV station, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and mobile phone in existence.
That ship sailed with the Loch Ness Monster swimming up the Thames, if not the evacuation of London during the Dinosaur Invasion or the great Silurian plague. For the casual viewer, the Earth the Doctor visits is the one outside their window; any public alarm, disaster, commotion, will be treated by the public as the first one.
Post by Agamemnon
Not only was there no explanation as to how the trees and other plant life
could have grown so fast without exploding (remember Terror of the
Vervoids?), where they got the soil and nutrients from in the middle of a
concrete city let alone a desert, and how they became not only sentient but
clairvoyant as well
The Doctor himself noted you don't get trees to grow overnight with just some extra fertilizer; you have to mess with time. These must be time-traveling trees from the future come back to when history showed they prevented the flaredeath. They then disappeared a short time after, not burning up in the flare, but time traveling after a bit of a rest.
Post by Agamemnon
but no plot justification was given for the return of
the girl's sister at the end of the story either.
"Anabel Arden, please come home." Carping about her being close enough to respond in time for a sappy ending as the Maebh and her mother get home and the plants disappear is just being dour.
Post by Agamemnon
Where's the science behind Oxygen stopping something from burning? It's
Carbon Dioxide which does that. Don't they teach chemistry any more for
GCSE?
The theory was the trees withholding oxygen, so as not to allow burning. Alas, that's like me withholding permission to read this post, too late once it's out there. But that was only a theory, maybe the trees were actually fireproof?
Post by Agamemnon
The trees which were downed in Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 weren't hit by a
solar flare. They were flattened by a meteor which sucked out the air
surrounding them when it scraped the edge of the earth's atmosphere and
narrowly avoided hitting the planet.
The explanations I've heard involve a central overpressure rather than scraping the atmosphere allowing air to be sucked out around it, but yeah, not a flare. But then, the second event mentioned was another meteor strike (in the Gulf of Mexico) said to have supposed to split the planet apart (what? in that case it was the plants' root system that held it together?)
Post by Agamemnon
I didn't note if any mass or volume of ejecta was given, but from the constant reference to airbags, I had the impression the extra oxygen was for the solar particles to bounce off of instead of reaching the surface. There's several problems of scale with this idea, but that's par for the Doctor Who course.

Is there a reason it was called something like The British Zoological Museum? What entities can decide for or against being name dropped? I recall the United Nations raised concerns about UNIT, but apparently NASA hasn't raised an international incident over their use?

Much like it lacks common sense, the will to do anything meaningful, and
any sort of memory that would keep them from repeating past mistakes,
the UN also lacks a sense of humor. :)

I mean, seriously... what possible harm to the UN is there in having a
fake organization in a fantasy TV show use their name? Were they afraid
that some nation they're courting to join would think they really do
have an alien adviser that they work with to defend the planet against
Daleks and Cybermen?

No, but if the UN did nothing, idiots would interpret that as an endorsement of
a television programme. In the same way in this country movies almost always use
a fake president rather than the actual contemporary president: the footage is
public domain, but idiots can mistake it to mean a sitting president approves
the movie.

Or GI Joe movies that use an English president.

In this episode, Magic Trees grow all over Earth's surface, including the oceans, and protect Earth from a solar flare.

Why didn't these trees intervene to protect Earth from solar flares during "The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People", or during the flares that had forced Great Britain to hop a ride on a passing space whale centuries before "The Beast Below"?

Birds over the heavily forested London.
The Doctor mentions cooking mammoth.
I just heard a wolf howl. I have twice seen a lion statue and flocks of birds.
Are you watching Forest of the Night yet again?

A big solar flare is on its way to Earth. Shouldn't the associated EM radiation have disabled the communications satellites by now?

The fact that the com satellites are still working is a major plot point, since that is how the kids will warn the world not to chop down the trees so that the trees can block the flare!

But will the EMP serve to wipe out all electronic records and personal memories of the trees?

Alternate way to protect Earth from flare: Just materialize the TARDIS around Earth!
