If You Need Me - Fats Domino - 9
My favorite Fats number from the Imperial label that was never in any
of the Battles. First appeared on Fats' second Imperial LP ("Fats
Domino Rock And Rollin'") in 1956 but actually recorded in October
1953 :- .

27 October 1953 J and M Studio, 838 North Rampart St., New Orleans, LA
Fats Domino [vcl/piano], Walter Nelson [gt], Frank Fields [bass],
Cornelius Coleman [drums], Wendell Duconge, Robert "Buddy" Hagans,
Lee Allen or Herb Hardesty [sax])
056 IM 648 BARRELHOUSE LP-9055 BCD-15541
057 IM 649/IM 1081* LITTLE SCHOOL GIRL [ARE YOU GOING MY WAY*]
45-5272 IMP 143*/LP-9009* BCD-15541
058 IM 650 IF YOU NEED ME IMP 143/LP-9009 BCD-15541

Definitely NOT to confused with the same titled but different song by
Fats from 1960 that was a minor hit for him that year

The Cow Jumped Over The Moon - Isley Brothers - 7
Very good but I prefer the even better "Angels Cried" side that WAS in
the 1957 Singles Battle (and also the later Dynamic Debuts Battle)

Yes,this was their first record launching the boys on a lonnnnnnnnnnng
career that would see them embrace just about every style of r&b/soul
/funk etc you can imagine---and all of them with great success
Post by Roger Ford
Marvella - Spinners - 6
Good number by the Pittsburg Ca group.

See the seperate post on the different "Spinners" groups on here today
Post by Roger Ford
I Give My Heart To You - The Accents -6
Talking about same named but different groups these are one of the
many "Accents" outfits---these being the Brunswick guys that nearly
made the Top 50 in 1958 with "Wiggle Wiggle"---itself famous for being
a virtual ripoff of "Little Bitty Pretty One". The number here was the
followup to that one

2-Spinners (so now there were *3* groups with that name?)
3???

Think there were a few more than that

OK here's what I have----in chronological order..................

1. THE SPINNERS - Marvella - 1958

On the Rhythm label this was a California group

2. THE SPINNERS - Lover's Prayer - 1958

Smooth black doowop ballad on Capitol

3. THE SPINNERS - Richard Pry Private Eye - 1959

Black Coasters-ish number on End. Some say this is the same group as
(2) above

4. THE SPINNERS - Little Otis - 1959

Dreadful white group number on Warner Bros. These guys worked with
rockabilly star Johnny Carroll on the label

5. THE SPINNERS - Boomerang - 1960

Ho-hum surf instrumental on Crystalette

6. THE SPINNERS - Dream - 1961

Decent black doowop revival of the old ballad. On Liberty label.Same
group as (2)??

7. THE SPINNERS - That's What Girls Are Made For - 1961

And of course this was the Tri-Phi debut of THE Spinners!!

8. THE SPINNERS - Happy Hootenanny - 1963

White hayseed instrumental group on Smash

9. THE SPINNERS - It Must Be Love -1964

Whiite pop duo on RCA. From the UK I think--where the record appeared
as by "The Sun Specs"

10. THE SPINNERS - Beetle Mania - year unknown but prob. 1964

I never heard this but flip is "Surfing Monkey" so perhaps same group
as (5) above??? On Lawson label.

Finally of course there is...

11.. THE SPINNERS

The popular UK folk group whose name caused a clash with THE famous US
R&B/soul vocal group causing them to be known first as "The Motown
Spinners" here in the UK and later as "The Detroit Spinners" when
they switched to Atlantic

Can anybody add to (or correct) any of the above? Thanks!!

Well, according to Disco-File the"Love's Prayer" and "Marvella" Spinners

I'm going to just paste the Disco-File "Spinners" material below,

Yes I'd forgotten about the Claudine Clark group

I found my Gribin & Schiff which has the "Lovers Prayer" and
"Marvella" and "Richard Pry" ensembles are the SAME group which can't
be right and also the "Little Otis" group as that same group too-which
DEFINITELY is not right since these guys are white

Yes, Fernando Gonzalez in Florida. When he published his last edition
he offered it on a CD for $10, an irresistible price.

1- Accents- Probably an upset here. Even though the melodic structure has been nicked from "Earth Angel", the lead singer is a monster and the recording is clean as a whistle!!

4- Spinners

All these sings were clustered in pretty damn close!! Don't like to work thus hard on Saturday morning, baby!!

3. I Give My Heart To You - The Accents - 27

4. 3. Marvella - Spinners - 25

The Spinners record is out and the Accents goes into the 3rd place pool. If we were using Bill's proposed change the Accents would be out with six 4th place rankings even though it also had 3 first place rankings and 3 second place rankings. The Spinners only had three 4th place rankings, but also had six 3rd place rankings.
