WAS THE FIX IN? LEWIS HAMILTON'S MOVE ON ESTEBAN OCON AT F1 MONACO GP
RAISES QUESTIONS
FIA may be taking closer look at race-day relationships between teams
MAY 28, 2018

Force India driver Esteban Ocon suggested Sunday that there is an
unwritten rule that he won’t hold up any Mercedes factory driver during
a Grand Prix event – the Frenchman being part of the Mercedes young
driver setup.

When Lewis Hamilton pitted in an attempt to undercut and pass
second-place Sebastian Vettel during the Monaco Grand Prix, he came out
right on the tail of Ocon but, despite struggling to get anywhere near
to the back of Vettel’s Ferrari during the first stint of the race, it
looked suspiciously easy for the championship leader to pass Ocon -- a
member of Mercedes' young driver program.

Granted, Ocon was on much older tires, and the Mercedes is a much
stronger car, but Hamilton was able to glide past unchallenged. Such was
the ease that even the television commentators suggested potential foul
play at the time.

“Maybe,” said Ocon when asked whether there was an unwritten rule. “I’m
a Mercedes driver, you should ask the boss. It was pointless to fight
with him, especially as he had new tires.”

Ocon finished sixth in the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, and Hamilton finished
on the podium in third.

Belgium newspaper La Dernière Heure asked Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about
the situation, to which Wolf replied “Yes, because that’s the way it is.”

If there has indeed been foul play and Mercedes did order Ocon to move
out of the way, the FIA may decide to issue some pretty stern
punishments to the German manufacturer. The only similar incident to
this, which if proven to be true is tantamount to fixing the race
result, is in Singapore in 2008 when Renault ordered Nelson Piquet Jr.
to deliberately crash his car to benefit and ultimately gift a victory
to teammate Fernando Alonso.

While not as extreme in this instance, the 2008 saw Renault handed a
suspended disqualification from the championship while those who made
the call were initially banned from working in the sport.

No special favours to help Hamilton and Mercedes, say Force India
29th May 2018, 11:33 | Dieter Rencken and Keith Collantine

Force India denies giving Mercedes special treatment by allowing Lewis
Hamilton past Esteban Ocon during the Monaco Grand Prix.

There were few overtaking moves during the race, and the ease with which
Hamilton passed Ocon after his first pit stop prompted claims the
Mercedes customer team had done the factory outfit a favour.

Kimi Raikkonen, who was trying to jump ahead of Hamilton through the pit
stops at the time, was among those who thought Hamilton had been waved
through.
“Obviously they pitted in the traffic but it was a Force India car and
they got let by him,” said Raikkonen. “We stayed two laps out but it
takes such a long time to clean the front that it didn’t really give us
any opportunity [to pass].”

However Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley told RaceFans they
weren’t in the same fight as the front runners and wouldn’t have held up
any of them.

“We were looking at tyre strategies,” said Fernley, “There’s just no
point [to hold Hamilton up] because we needed to get him home with a
comfortable one-stop.”

“[Hamilton] could have been anybody,” he added, “it could have been
Ricciardo or Vettel.”

Hamilton said the moment he passed Ocon was his race’s only highlight.

“It was the most exciting part of the race, I got to overtake someone!”
he said. “I was excited for a second. But he didn’t put up a big fight
or anything like that so it wasn’t too difficult.”

WAS THE FIX IN? LEWIS HAMILTON'S MOVE ON ESTEBAN OCON AT F1 MONACO GP
RAISES QUESTIONS FIA may be taking closer look at race-day

[snip]

I think the "unwritten rule" may well be true for cars being lapped and
even cars on a different strategy where they aren't really racing one
another as far as the race result is concerned. It certainly gets
mentioned often enough so is hardly a new phenomena.

The shit stirring nature of the piece ("foul play") and the OP are
somewhat unwarranted; one demonstrates sensationalising the other
prejudice.

Why would there be blue flags?

Where is the foul play and why only mention this alleged phenomena now
not at previous races?

Say Ocon had made it an easy pass rather than hold Hamiliton behind
until he pitted where would be the advantage in that?

You are blinded by your prejudice. The mere mention of "foul play",
even though this is not a new thing, has you ALL CAPS and frothing.

Ever blue-flagged an F1 race? I have.

ALL CAPS are the writer's. Not mine.

When asked about team orders, Ocon said "ask the boss."

What do you think he meant?

Or do you read, comprehend, or think, at all?

Your comments are nothing but froth. No substance.

You're getting exactly the same response from the septic we've seen
before. It's like kicking shit out of a fart, not worth the electic in
responding to the posts. BTW, the author is a fucktard of the first
water, comparing a deliberate crash in Singapore with an easy overtake
is an example of his piss poor, watching the telly race 'reporting'.
He'll be writing for Daily Mail soon.

Several cases of cars being overtaken not contesting, because there was
no point given the relative merits of the cars involved, their tyre
type, and their tyre age. And not wanting to be involved in a contact.

WAS THE FIX IN? LEWIS HAMILTON'S MOVE ON ESTEBAN OCON AT F1 MONACO
GP RAISES QUESTIONS FIA may be taking closer look at race-day
relationships between teams MAY 28, 2018
[snip]
I think the "unwritten rule" may well be true for cars being lapped
and even cars on a different strategy where they aren't really
racing one another as far as the race result is concerned. It
certainly gets mentioned often enough so is hardly a new phenomena.
The shit stirring nature of the piece ("foul play") and the OP are
somewhat unwarranted; one demonstrates sensationalising the other
prejudice.
Several cases of cars being overtaken not contesting, because there
was no point given the relative merits of the cars involved, their
tyre type, and their tyre age. And not wanting to be involved in a
contact.
Exactly. You pick your fights. There was no point for Ocon to be watching
his mirrors lap after lap (on a track that demands all of your attention)
when he wasn't really fighting the Mercedes. He would have lost the position
when he pitted anyway. Best to not make it hard for Hamilton to pass so he
could then get on with putting in quick safe laps.

Storm in a teacup, nothing to see here. Ocon should have known better than
to say "you better ask the boss" (if he did in fact say that to the
question, journos are slippery). Already this year we've seen Ferraris get
past Haas cars much more quickly than you'd expect all things being equal.
It doesn't make sense to waste time and concetration fighting a fight that
you're ultimately not going to win - and even less sense if it is a team
that your team has a relationship with.
