Hi Guys,

As you have read, we have been asking for ASIO and WDMKS capabilities
for the jOrgan Fluidsynth Sound element for some time now. I have been
attempting to compile these for some years, and finally (with the
PortAudio devs releasing a new stable version and with their help
guiding me) I have a build that works (thanks to Sven for
troubleshooting and creating the required links in the jOrgan
Fludisynth Sound extension). I have only been able to get this working
in 32-bit (so far), but both Dan and I are working in that
direction...

So, for those who would like to be involved in the testing the 32-bit
versions, I have added some pages to the jOrgan WIKI, see:

AT LAST !!!!!!!!

It was one of my dreams : jOrgan/FS with Asio (=add Jack....), I posted so many times now its fulfilled .



Graham I know your efforts for years now to get this workin' now you did it !

This is a big day for jOrgan/FS.



So, my test.

BEAUTIFUL ! HQ sound with Asio driver, far better than windows direct sound.

Latency....... what latency? I tested with my Oberhausbergen and 3.13b6.



One problem in my 32bit laptop.

The first change in Driver (ie selecting Portaudio) crashed java....

Second opening OK, but when change audio device (Asio) again crashed java

Third opening OK. If attempt to lower buffer size again crashes Java the first time.

Then everytime all works perfect.



These crashes didn't occur in
my 64bit laptop....(?) where I opened 3.13b6 (x86) with the executable
jar file. all went smooth from the start.

This makes me think, is 64bit Java more stable than the one in 32 ??!



FS reverb was slight better here with Asio but not much. Still has this metallic sound.

I know I'm right, as later with Jackrouter (changed Asio audio device to
Jackrouter, now jOrgan sees it !) I added my Lexicon native
PCM(savihosted) and the sound took off to heavens.... It was the first
time I heard this way Oberhausbergen model.



Also, using ASIO dropped overall Fluidsynth gain. It is very audible, no
numeric change. And the sound is far better. sweet and smooth and
solid.



Now I have to change all dispositions (about 2GB are they?) with
Portaudio/Asio and all 3.13b6 new features........ = months.... but its
worth the effort.

I've installed Jack, modified the command line, and the command line you
sent just toggled a command window like lightning. No process was started.

Yes, I wrote it alright. ;-)

Then I configured Jack in the control window setup, to use portaudio with
44100 Hz. So some devices appeared (two javaw, two system, on the right some
sound sources), but from that point I didn't know what to do now.

The first 3 times I started jOrgan, no JackRouter appeared in the property
window. Later on, I found them right in place, but I didn't know how to
connect this all.

I'm very sorry if I just look like a bread :(, but I've never used Jack...

No worries! Jack takes a bit of getting used to :)

We have to take this one step at a time... the Command window must
stay open and report that the Jack Server has started before any of
the next steps.

Please copy and paste your modified 'target' to me.

Hi Bernd,

Ok, re-install Jack from the installer, something has gone wrong with
the registry entry if you're getting "jackdmp is no Win32
application".

Then try a target without the period and rate set, so something like:
C:\Programme\Jack197\jackd.exe -R -S -d portaudio -d "ASIO::ASIO4ALL v2"

Then let me know what the Command Prompt window reports.

Hi Bernd,

Great step forward :)

Now you can start Jack Control, etc.

Then load jOrgan, configure a fluidsynth element to
portaudio/jackrouter, and a 'java' item should appear in the Connect
window (left panel) connected to your system (right panel).

You should then be able to play and hear the organ.

If you then run a VST Reverb with ASIO inputs/outputs, configure that
to use JackRouter, then connect the various inputs to outputs in the
Connect window you should get VST reverb for your fluidsynth instance
audio.

I have also sent an information request to the fluid-dev group to see
if we can find out why only one portaudio driver can be used at a
time.

many thanks again for those new features. Regretfully I cannot report only
good :|

For testing I don't use Jack so far.

The first setup does show no ASIO4All driver anymore, in the jOrgan property
field. If I use the version dating from yesterday, there it is.

It seems phantastic to me, that I can use that portaudio default together
with my SB EAX machine. That's indeed astonishing. Great work and success.

Closing jOrgan caused blue screens here, with no comments, using SAGRADA
disposition. No crashes so far with Arlesheim from Paul (just one sound
element). I'm using Soundblaster Live Platinum card. Those bluescreens
disappeared that fast I could not read which dll is affected.

Any ideas? Logs or other places I can search for information?

reverberation functioning as clear as a crystal.

Exactly.

I had chosen all portaudio/portaudio default. jOrgan showed then the proper
error messages, that it wasn't able to create the FS instances. One FS sound
element was loaded properly, and played wonderful.

Your suspicion is working perfectly here, one portaudio driven element and
the others with dSound. No problems at all when combined.

I forgot to mention: with the dispositions I've tried so far there's no
noticeable latency, with the WDMKS as well as ASIO version. Very impressive.
But for the ultimate test with SAGRADA, I must configure a multichannel
setup. Is this also possible with the WDMKS driver, or shall I switch to
ASIO for that?

Hi Bernd,

At the moment, I don't know for sure!

I do know that 'in principal' the ASIO version will work with Jack to
provide multiple fluidsynth instances, and that 'in principal' the
WDMKS version should work just like dsound does...and support multiple
instances, but my efforts since getting the build working have been
focused on getting the WIKI info up, getting the dlls out for testing,
and attempting to get a 64-bit version working too...

I have only done a couple of tests myself since getting it all working
as the weekend was very busy (my Mother has been visiting from the UK
and she left on Sunday PM & I then needed to re-connect with spouse,
cats, dishwasher, etc!). Work is also busy today, so this is all being
done around my list of must do things :)

In principal I would prefer to use the ASIO audio for multiple
instances, but if Jack is not running (and JackRouter not available)
then jOrgan will report errors.

I think we'll return to one instance dispositions soon! Latency improvement
is too good, actually I feel a little as if the tones start before I play
them ;-).

But perhaps the WDMKS multichannel property is just only hidden yet.

only a single instance of fluidsynth is currently available with ASIO.
In Jack/Audio tab on the left pane only a single instance of javaw is shown.
On the right pane (as usual here under Jack) all 10 available audio
channels are shown, ready to accept connections.
Simultaneously the other instances of fluidsynth, used in a disposition,
are available with dsound.
The dsound ones can be directed to any of the available audio channels.
So multichannel is still possible pending availability of a
multi-fluidsynth-instance ASIO driver.

Erik, Bernd, Graham of course......

Just came home and not time yet to do some trials, but what an amount of
information is written down already in a few hours about this
achievement.........

Fo as far as I interpret things well, the way to go now is one FS ( becasue
of the ASIO driver limitation), and use the mutlichannel properties of the
available soundcard.

For mutlichannel it is very important, that some way is found to develop the
user interface in such a way, that individual users can switch ranks at
will to their available channels!!!

So that people with only 2 ( stereo) channels can play the dispo and people
like Erik with the 10 channel Focusrite can use that also.

If you feel like bread, I feel like a brick. Too stupid to even understand
the problem that has been solved!

Reading Graham's suggested links and the Wikipedia page on ASIO, I think I
have pieced together a few clues as to what all the excitement is about:
1) There was a latency problem with windows due to the windows mixer
2) ASIO is a standard developed by Steinberg that allows direct driver
connection to sound card hardware bypassing the windows mixer, thus reducing
latency
3) ASIO4ALL is a windows driver that allows asio for ANY soundcard (hard to
believe, but perhaps...)
4) PortAudio for ASIO allows JACK to 'see' the ASIO driver instead of the
normal driver (with a few exceptions as mentioned above in this thread)
5) None of this applies to Linux and Mac so I can continue to blithely stand
by as the posts continue falling like heavy hail on my brick-like brain.

Hopefully someone smarter than me will correct any incredibly stupid
suppositions above.

PS Why is Windows still being used for a cross platform program that has
less latency on other OS's, including a free one?

Dell,

I guess because:

1. Manufacturers of all avaiable audio devices offer drivers for Windows and
Mac that are tested. Would not like to get in a situation that you buy an
expensive audio device only to find out that 1 or more features are not
supported by Linux etc.
2. There is a lot of very sophysticated and through-developed audio software
available in Windows and Mac.
3. For the less computer-language-minded and experienced people Win and Mac
are more userfriendly.

the problem that has been solved!
Reading Graham's suggested links and the Wikipedia page on ASIO, I think I
1) There was a latency problem with windows due to the windows mixer
2) ASIO is a standard developed by Steinberg that allows direct driver
connection to sound card hardware bypassing the windows mixer, thus reducing
latency
3) ASIO4ALL is a windows driver that allows asio for ANY soundcard (hard to
believe, but perhaps...)
4) PortAudio for ASIO allows JACK to 'see' the ASIO driver instead of the
normal driver (with a few exceptions as mentioned above in this thread)
5) None of this applies to Linux and Mac so I can continue to blithely stand
by as the posts continue falling like heavy hail on my brick-like brain.
Hopefully someone smarter than me will correct any incredibly stupid
suppositions above.

PS Why is Windows still being used for a cross platform program that has
less latency on other OS's, including a free one?

Hello Graham,

Congratulations with this achievement, and thank you very much for
releasing it.

Very first and preliminary observations, using jOrgan 3.13-beta-6 with
ASIO driver on Windows 7 64 bit PC
and testing with Burea Funeral Chapel 1.0 (3.13b6)
BCA_Test2_chorusSF100-aeolian:

1) Here also, as with Panos' 64 bit laptop, no java crashes when changing
2) No perceivable latency
3) Excellent sound quality; volume up compared to the use of dsound driver
4)With Chorus send set to 20 in the soundfont and Reverb staying at 100,
operating the "sliders" it smooth.

5) The test disposition used has 2 FluidSynth instances resp. HV and OW_PD
Selecting portaudio as driver / Saffire 1394 ASIO as audio device, only
one of both fluidsynth instances is recognized here in my case.
At the other one "unable to create fluidsynth" is shown in the Problems
window of jOrgan.
If i remember correctly, only one ASIO driver can be loaded, so this was
to be expected.
However, where ASIO is fully capable to support multichannel audio, i
wonder how this could be done using the ASIO support you have build into
the FluidSynth extension of jOrgan.
It means that at present in my case the ranks in the OW_PD soundfont
cannot be played if the fluidsynth element HV is set to use ASIO.
A number of excellent dispositions released recently use multiple
soundfonts; is there a way to use them without merging them into a
single soundfont?
Do you see a way to have all the benefits of ASIO and keeping those of
multichannel audio?

As you have read, we have been asking for ASIO and WDMKS capabilities
for the jOrgan Fluidsynth Sound element for some time now. I have been
attempting to compile these for some years, and finally (with the
PortAudio devs releasing a new stable version and with their help
guiding me) I have a build that works (thanks to Sven for
troubleshooting and creating the required links in the jOrgan
Fludisynth Sound extension). I have only been able to get this working
in 32-bit (so far), but both Dan and I are working in that
direction...

Hi Erik,

The use of the Jack Audio Connection for Windows should allow us to
use multiple instances of Fluidsynth/PortAudio-ASIO. I wrote a very
quick tutorial on this on the WIKI this morning and will be adding
more bits and pieces as the week progresses. So we will be able to
channel the ASIO audio into VST reverbs and then into multiple
channels.

I'm glad to hear that things are working (even with the ASIO
limitation of one device only)

Erik I'm glad we got the same results in 64bit OS .



Graham take a break, we got all the time we need.



I mean, people, wait, for a long time we didn't get the chance to have Asio in Fluidsynth.

Let's stay here for a moment, enjoy the HQ sound, then we do more tests.



Indeed at this time only one instance is allowed, but where's the problem  with that?

There so many great dispos with only one FS engine. So I think is a good
time to revisit them and enjoy them as their creators would want them
to be : without latency and HQ sound.



My experience with Asio and Jack for more than 18 months showed me that this is the best quality we can get in our computers.

Asio is easier, Jack needs a little more time to learn how to.



As I'm in GrandOrgue program too I had that and I wanted this to get in jOrgan.

That's why I was sending those posts about FS latency and its sound quality.

Now with Asio FS will show up its qualities as a multichannel sampler and we all be happy with it.



And the most important : jOrgan is now close to be the best, as it
combines best Midi relay and HQ sound (see how good now sf2 sounds? John
was right !)

jOrgan-fluidsynth-1.11-win-x86-portaudio-ASIO.zip
only a single instance of fluidsynth is currently available with ASIO.
In Jack/Audio tab on the left pane only a single instance of javaw is shown.
On the right pane (as usual here under Jack) all 10 available audio
channels are shown, ready to accept connections.
Simultaneously the other instances of fluidsynth, used in a disposition,
are available with dsound.
The dsound ones can be directed to any of the available audio channels.
So multichannel is still possible pending availability of a
multi-fluidsynth-instance ASIO driver.

I have only done a couple of tests myself since getting it all working
as the weekend was very busy (my Mother has been visiting from the UK
and she left on Sunday PM&  I then needed to re-connect with spouse,
cats, dishwasher, etc!). Work is also busy today, so this is all being
done around my list of must do things:)

jOrgan is only a hobby, be it admittedly a passionate and addictive one.
When you are ready, i am available to continue testing of multichannel
builds whenever they come.

sad to report that currently not even using the JackRouter will allow
multiple instances. So the PortAudio ASIO driver must be the current
limiter of instances :(

I am using jOrgan 3.12.2 in my 32bit/s folder. The only 1 FS dispo I found
is the Arlesheim 3.4.

This gives me an error message on opening that it is not a valid
disposition. Could it be that this is a too old version??

So is there a more recent 1FS disposition to do my tests??

I tried to open the GBO (Alt)_311.1FS.disposition with the ASIO-modified
3.12.2.

Got a nice screen, but as soon as I got into construct mode I got an error
message saying that jOrgan had to shut down.

So this was my first - and I am afraid for tonight the last - effort from me
to take part in the testing of the very promising ASIO extension........

Must be something with my brain.......do i have to see the docteur??

The Fluidsynth Extension that comes with the ASIO and WDMKS portaudio
drivers is only supported by the 32-bit jOrgan 3.13 beta series (and
release once testing and improving have been completed).

Currently only the 32-bit version is available, 64-bit drivers are
being attempted.

Currently the PortAudio driver will only work with a single Fluidsynth
instance. This is a limitation of the PortAudio instantiation and
there is no known work around (yet).

Are there any other points that should be added to the WIKI tutorials so far?

Hi Guys,

For those who are testing both ASIO and WDMKS, or developing
dispositions for both here is a little tip:

The only difference between the two ZIP files is the portaudio_x86.dll.

So, install the WDMKS version.
Rename libs/portaudio_x86.dll to portaudio_x86-WDMKS.dll,
then install the ASIO version.

Create your ASIO dispositions, then when you want to go back to WDMKS
Close jOrgan
Rename the (asio) portaudio_x86.dll to portaudio_x86-ASIO.dll
Then rename the portaudio_x86-WDMKS.dll back to portaudio_x86.dll
Start jOrgan and off you go with the WDMKS version...

is there a way to alter the portaudio buffer settings? During the converting
process of SAGRADA, I've reached the dithering/granularity level I cannot
operate anymore. Changing the FS buffer settings has a certain effect, but
from a certain point I seem to touch another limitation.

Looking a the system resources, I just have reached 10%, with already half
of the instrument.

Any ideas?

I don't know :)

The little bit that I do know is that buffer sizes and buffers are
co-related and ideally should be mathematically matched with Memory
Sizes. This does depend on the SoundCard however, so it is not an
absolute rule...

So a sequence of Buffer/Buffer Size might give you some indication of
what is best. For example

2 buffers of buffer size 64 (Lowest possible latency)
2 buffers of buffer size 128
2 buffers of buffer size 256
2 buffers of buffer size 512
4 buffers of buffer size 512
8 buffers of buffer size 512
4 buffers of buffer size 1024 (should be same latency as the previous one)
8 buffers of buffer size 1024
4 buffers of buffer size 2048 (should be same latency as the previous one)
8 buffers of buffer size 2048

If you're working with 8 buffers with a buffer size of 2048 and you're
experiencing issues with the audio please let me know. I might not be
able to do much about it, but I will then start a question thread on
the PortAudio dev group about it :)

Graham,

Dramatic improvement on sound quality and playability........

I use the Arlesheim with ASIO on the EMU0404.

2 notes:

a. The volume is some 12 dB lower; WHERE is the gain adjustment for FS
hidden at the moment??

b. More important: so far I could NOT select output channels and the sound
is ONLY coming from the anlog ports ( ch 3/4 in EMU).

So that means 2 things: I cannot get the more noiseless digital output,
and, I cannot have 4 channel reproduction yet.

DO i DO something wrong again??

Thanks a lot for the dramatic improvements so far. I will wait some time to
link to Jack Audio as I am using the Lex now, and must still recover form my
many mistakes.........

Dramatic improvement on sound quality and playability........
I use the Arlesheim with ASIO on the EMU0404.
a. The volume is some 12 dB lower; WHERE is the gain adjustment for FS
hidden at the moment??
b. More important: so far I could NOT select output channels and the sound
is ONLY coming from the anlog ports ( ch 3/4 in EMU).
So that means 2 things: I cannot get the more noiseless digital output,
and, I cannot have 4 channel reproduction yet.
DO i DO something wrong again??
Thanks a lot for the dramatic improvements so far. I will wait some time
to link to Jack Audio as I am using the Lex now, and must still recover form
my many mistakes.........

co-related and ideally should be mathematically matched with Memory
Sizes. This does depend on the SoundCard however, so it is not an
absolute rule...

Itss NOT clear to me, why this gain has such inconvenient values..........

First I got it towards 1.0 but the sound was coming out at some 60 dB
higher.........

Now its on approx 0.1 and that's ok. But WHY again its such an insiders
range???

We have dB,s........all sorts of them; I used to work in the communications
business and have been teaching people in far away countries like Indonesia
on all the ins and outs of them, now to be confronted with such strange
things......

BUT...the SOUND is incredible!!!! Now we are going to hear the nice but
also the less nice details of the samplesets.....--::))

Another observation:

The Arlesheim has this wind simulation effect, and it is much clearer
noticable now on MY system, under ASIO.

It is just like a curtain has been raised...........

One extra observation: on MY system there has got a sort of delay in
construct mode when you have changed something, and wnat to go back to play
mode. Sometimes I have to press construct mode a few times before it reacts.
This is also when you alter some values.

Erik, it is becasue of the jOrgan forum, that I am constantly and inexorable
reminded of my detoriating memory.......

Of course I knew this WIN7 security issue.........

I posted a HELP aboutt this, but I will take that back.

Thanks a lot.......I only cannot understand why other software. like HW etc,
do not have this save issue!!

Besides I do not know in what directory jOrgan wants to save, because it
does not show.

I thaught, that once you open a dispo from somewhere, it remembers this
location and wants to write to the same location?? ( I may hope so....)

mechanisms" Micro$oft has put in Windows 7 for (or against?) us stupid
users.
In what directory is jOrgan trying to write, and how are the protections on

The Arlesheim has this wind simulation effect, and it is much clearer
noticable now on MY system, under ASIO.
It is just like a curtain has been raised...........
One extra observation: on MY system there has got a sort of delay in
construct mode when you have changed something, and wnat to go back to play
mode. Sometimes I have to press construct mode a few times before it reacts.
This is also when you alter some values.

Itss NOT clear to me, why this gain has such inconvenient
values..........
First I got it towards 1.0 but the sound was coming out at some 60 dB
higher.........
Now its on approx 0.1 and that's ok. But WHY again its such an insiders
range???
We have dB,s........all sorts of them; I used to work in the
communications business and have been teaching people in far away countries
like Indonesia on all the ins and outs of them, now to be confronted with
such strange things......
BUT...the SOUND is incredible!!!! Now we are going to hear the nice but
also the less nice details of the samplesets.....--::))

Dramatic improvement on sound quality and playability........
I use the Arlesheim with ASIO on the EMU0404.
a. The volume is some 12 dB lower; WHERE is the gain adjustment for
FS hidden at the moment??
b. More important: so far I could NOT select output channels and the
sound is ONLY coming from the anlog ports ( ch 3/4 in EMU).
So that means 2 things: I cannot get the more noiseless digital
output, and, I cannot have 4 channel reproduction yet.
DO i DO something wrong again??
Thanks a lot for the dramatic improvements so far. I will wait some
time to link to Jack Audio as I am using the Lex now, and must still recover
form my many mistakes.........

Thanks for the report.

I see you found the Gain property :)

In regards to channels and their choice.... it's taken me years to get
a successful compile of the PortAudio driver (as the last stable
release was 2007! But the PA developers are working on a second stable
release for this year, so things are getting much better), so I'm very
much still learning and I don't know all the ins and outs of using it
yet.

My base assumption is that it should be possible to select the device
channels, whether that is something that has to be developed in jOrgan
or Fluidsynth I don't know. Currently we do not have this facility (as
far as I know).

And having sent that chart I did a quick test with a fully combined
Burea soundfont, and went up to 16 x 2048 on my laptop (not the best
audio chip!) before I had fully clean sound with all the stops out...

Please do something simpler at first....  :-)

Try my Oberhausbergen, is simple, has few stops and good samples in ONE FS element.
Then, since you got ASIO4all installed, go and select portaudio in driver box and ASIO4All in audio device box.

Ah !! Carefull here : before you do anything, as Obie is with direct sound , change buffer to 8/128. Close construction. Do not play anything.
Reopen construction and then start selecting.
After 1st select (portaudio) wait  untill you see the familliar Asio small window on the down right.
Then select audio device. Wait a few secs and then close construction.
Play.....

Some more news for all.

Jacques has send me a refined and corrected version of Russell, ie added notEqual 9, corrected some issues with general pistons ect and saved with 3.13b6.

I started workin on this one this afternoon and I added all reverb elements, retuned hautboy8' and of course introduced Asio settings on FS. The model now rocks....

Wait for me those of you have problems with Asio workin, as this Russell version just opens and one can play at once, given that in the OS there's Asio4all v2.10 installed. I hope will be ready for download this night (here). I'll post soon.

Hi Geert,Confirmed from my first test report too, overall gain falls about 10 to 12db indeedBut the quality of sound is improvedFS gain is located at its properties. Gain. set a value (no arrows) of 0.1 and you'll be fine ! (same here)

Hmmmm, Geert, do me a favour,Do you have any spare lap, no matter if 32 or 64bit, but win7.If so, install Asio4all, then Java 6u24 (32), then jOrgan 3.13b6 (32).Replace lib files with Graham's, get and open Russell 3.1.play and then close. Will jOrgan shows "do you wanna save file?" and does save?
My point is to see if on a clean system will get it to work, as from your posts I see that you're in heavy OS (me too...)

Panos, although it is perhaps not what you asked,

I copied my working WDMKS complete to my WIN7 32 laptop. And it worked out
of the box. Only 10 Mb!!

Compare that to HW.

I must repeat that for many users who may are not aware of,
All dispositions available for jOrgan versions created from users to userscan be found on our wiki > Dispositions. Every name Sven entered is a link (click on it) to the site where the relative dispositions are for download !
So, if happens to loose the URL, can return always to this wiki page and get what he/she wants.Thanks Sven.

Hi Guys,

I have been asked by a few people about what the difference is between
ASIO and WDMKS and which one would be better for them to use.

The bottom line is this:

If you have an ASIO driver for your soundcard, or you want to add VST
reverb using JackRouter, then the ASIO driver is what you should be
using.

If you don't have an ASIO driver for your audio device, and are not
using VST reverb, then the WDMKS driver is the one that you should be
using.

For those that are using ASIO4ALL, the ASIO4ALL driver receives audio
through the ASIO specification interface, but it connects to your
audio device through WDMKS or its Win7 update called WaveRT, so unless
you are using VST reverbs with JackRouter, there is no real difference
between ASIO -> ASIO4ALL and WDMKS.

Agreed. The jOrgan sourceforge wikipedia is the best place. Two levels
of information:
1) overviews like GrahamG's which help point the beginner in a direction he
is interested after reading them
2) more detailed sections with step-by-step examples for the subjects
pertinent to those choices (e.g. OS, drivers, synths, etc)
