House affordability
Child poverdy

Yeah, nah. That stuff is all a bit too hard for her.
She's been very busy answering all the fan mail that the the teacher's
union members put the schoolchildren up to sending to her.

For example:

TASK - WRITE A LETTER TO JACINDA ARDERN.

Jacinda Ardern has been advising New Zealand on how best to help the
country fight covid-19. With help from others she's been making
decisions as to which levels New Zealand needs to be in and also what
these levels look like to help our wellbeing. Today we are going to
write her a letter letting her know how much we appreciate what she
has done.

Part 1:
Introduce yourself and explain who you are, and where you go to
school. What have you been doing to help keep New Zealand safe.

Part 2:
Thank Jacinda for all the hard work that she has put in to keep us all
safe and healthy.

Part 3:
Write a message of support, put yourself in Jacinda's shoes and think
about all the hard decisions she has had to make to keep us all safe.

Bill.

No Government has the political will to do much about this as the voters
like their house increasing in price. Distored on so many levels.

Look this happening, middle of April.

Yeah, nah. That stuff is all a bit too hard for her.
Then spending more time on it will not really help.

Meanwhile over the hills, the task of entering the mine continues. Something
the Key Government did not even attempt.

Find that a certain union leader didn't do his job.
Or are they going to take the remains from the mine and put them back in

There is nothing to hold the union to account for. They were not the
employers; the Board of Directors and the Mine Manager were
responsible, but the Key government did not attempt to hold them to
account.

If the evidence supports it - the police assess prosecutions - but I
suspect there could have been charges under work safety legislation
that having not been taken then cannot be taken now.

Then spending more time on it will not really help.
Meanwhile over the hills, the task of entering the mine continues. Something
the Key Government did not even attempt.
And what happens when they get in there.
Find that a certain union leader didn't do his job.
Or are they going to take the remains from the mine and put them back in
the ground???
Kings burials work out cheaper
Little will never be held accountable for his failure to protect the miners :(
There is nothing to hold the union to account for. They were not the
employers; the Board of Directors and the Mine Manager were
responsible, but the Key government did not attempt to hold them to
account.
BULLSHIT! Little and the union sat on their fucking hands and did nothing before the disaster Rich! Your denial is ample proof of that in your rush to support a Marxist muppet like Little!

The mine entry has finished after costing twice what was originally allocated backing up the Key governments claims :)

They were correct in not doing so. They had expert advice that it would be
unlikely to be successful and at that time the advice was also that it would be
dangerous.
Naturally some people will argue that there was conflicting advice. So what,
there is always conflicting advice in cases like this? It was a judgement call
and since then people have used this tragedy to score political points - shame
on them.

Government is politics in action, as is political point-scoring, deplorable though some may find the reality of it. In the case of Pike River it has been little else but politics from the moment the explosion happened. For the government in its determination to bring the tragedy to some sort of conclusion however inadequate it could turn out for some, it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't". Thus politics, or, as in this case, "realpolitik".

From a year or two back, here's du Fresne's framing of the dilemma: a reminder of what lies at the heart of an issue that seeks closure but a closure that is unlikely ever to be achieved to the satisfaction of either the bereaved or their countrymen at large:

John Key, as Prime Minister made a promise on behalf of government. He
them lied about it, but a recording proved that he had made the
promise. Labour, believing that trust in government is desirable,
honoured that promise. The recent entry met the expectations of the
families from the meeting when Key made the promise initially, but it
also provided some evidence which may result in a prosecution, but if
not better knowledge of what happened.

Not all original media items are still available easily - I just did
one Google search for "John Key Pike River lies" and derived the
following:

Early on, Key met witht he families and said : "The first thing is IÂ’m
here to give you absolute reassurance, weÂ’re committed to getting the
boys out, and nothing’s going to change that. So – when people try and
tell you weÂ’re not, theyÂ’re playing, I hate to say it, but theyÂ’re
playing with your emotions."

Later he said: "I never promised anyone we would get the bodies out,"
he said. "We promised family members that we would do everything we
could to get the bodies out. We have done everything that we believe
we possibly can."
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/4545357/Mine-families-vow-to-fight-on

The words that he originally said as given above were, unknown to John
Key, recorded and a video played on TV3.

The familes did not acept his assertion that "We have done everything
that we believe we possibly can." The current government did more,
and that has been appreciated by the families.

Perhaps you have a selective memory, Tony, but feel free to do your
own searches to get additional evidence that John Key did indeed try
to wriggle out of hs original commitment.

Not at all - see https://www.pikeriverrecovery.govt.nz/

This was an important project, not only for the families of those
killed, but for all of NEw Zealand in affirming that the then
government, and the current government, will not sweep embarrassing
things under the table, that potential wrongdoing will be
investigated, and that disasters will not be ignored because of
potential political embarassment. You are entitled to your view, as is

I should make it clear that John Key was seen as failing to deliver on
either commitment; and Labour only promised to meet the second Key
commitment to "do everything we can to get the bodies out" - and at
the same time police had the opportunity of inspecting more of the
site than they had been able to all those years ago.
Makes zero difference.

This was an important project, not only for the families of those
killed, but for all of NEw Zealand in affirming that the then
government, and the current government, will not sweep embarrassing
things under the table, that potential wrongdoing will be
investigated, and that disasters will not be ignored because of
potential political embarassment. You are entitled to your view, as is
the Opposition . . .
Funny how they've ignored the failure of Little's union to try and protect the miners. If I was a conspiracy theorist like you Rich I'd wonder if it hadn't been done to help get Labour back into government...
Btw Rich. The only embarrassment is Labours because yet again they've failed at the cost of millions of dollars the country can't afford!

Sure Key may have said that but the expert advice National got that it would be a waste of money and time is now being proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Yet you're still pushing the same bullshit you did when supporting Labours wasting of yet another $50 million for political propaganda! After all wasn't it Little who claimed Labour would "bring the boys out"! Yet again one of Labours major promises is a total failure!

that we believe we possibly can." The current government did more,
and that has been appreciated by the families.
Perhaps you have a selective memory, Tony, but feel free to do your
own searches to get additional evidence that John Key did indeed try
to wriggle out of hs original commitment.
No it is your interpretation that is defective.
The experts had not at that time given an assessment, when they did the
government did what it had to.
Unlike this government. Ever since the accident the left have used this a
political weap[on - fact.
John Key said: ""The first thing is IÂ’m here to give you absolute
reassurance, weÂ’re committed to getting the boys out, and nothingÂ’s
going to change that. So – when people try and tell you we’re not,
theyÂ’re playing, I hate to say it, but theyÂ’re playing with your
emotions."
Are you trying to play with our emotions, Tony?
Don't be such a fool. You know that what was said had to be said at the moment
of tragedy, any PM would have said it. But then the experts said you cannot go
in. Simple really.. And I, unlike you, can manage without using smart and
insulting sarcasm.

Labour, believing that trust in government is desirable,
honoured that promise. The recent entry met the expectations of the
families from the meeting when Key made the promise initially, but it
also provided some evidence which may result in a prosecution, but if
not better knowledge of what happened.

I think it is a bit harsh to describe the mine re-entry as political
point scoring. National-led governments made a reasonable decision to
leave the mine intact based on advice that re-entering the mine would
not achieve much and carried unacceptable risk to those tasked with
this job. Those tasked with re-entering the mine volunteered for the
task knowing the risks which were mitigated. The costs and likely
value of the results can and should be fairly assessed.

Every time the opposition disagrees with the Government of the day,
there is political point scoring. With disaster events such as Pike
River Coal it is a bit disingenuous to say that opposing the
Government viewpoint is playing with the emotions of the victims
families as a means of shutting down dissent on a Government decision.

The decision by the National-led government was reasonable at the time
just after the disaster occurred - but so was the decision of the
Labour-led government to re-open the mine, having campaigned on this
as a pre-election promise before the 2017 election.

Nah, it was political. Especially Winston saying he'd be first one in. They all knew full no bodies would be found. Robots had already been to the rockfall. So when politicians say they are going in to recover bodies, they were lying for political gain.

like their house increasing in price. Distored on so many levels.
So they lied to us when they said they can fix it? Thanks for clearing that up.
Can you give a reference for the statement you are relying on here?

This like the housing crisis needs some heavy equipment.
Some heavy intellect you mean. Which this government lacks.

Look this happening, middle of April.
Believe it when I see it. Funny how a week ago this was in the too-hard basket, but now it isn't?

Yeah, nah. That stuff is all a bit too hard for her.
Then spending more time on it will not really help.
At least you admit the current mob aren't up to it.

Meanwhile over the hills, the task of entering the mine continues.
No it does not. It has stopped at the roof fall and they have stated they will go no further. Waste of $50mil.

Something
the Key Government did not even attempt.
And as we have seen, they are vindicated.

NZ sliding into recession
Well is it?
Can't you use Google?

Which demonstrates that as at that date New Zealand was not in
recession.
Which is why I said "sliding into". Try to read before you post.

How deep and how does it compare with the rest of the world?
Irrelevant. Start another thread if you want.
Of course it is relevant - if other countries are in recession it
affects trade and hence our own position.

So which alternative government-in-waiting is already proven "heavier" in intellect?

Simple question: safely assuming the unlikelihood of today's National benches suddenly morphing en masse into Rhodes scholars before the end of 2023, what "intellectual improvement" can you reasonably expect?[1]

The way of all politics plus, in this case, the day-to-day vagaries of pandemic review and control.

Is this what the bereaved are also saying?

Like most if not all communities based on extreme-hazard occupations, mining communities like Pike River are often remote, small and close-knit. New Zealand itself has more than once been referred to as a community rather than a nation; from which Pike River can be considered an integral sub-set of that same national characteristic. (Certainly, Ardern has appealed and played on to this inherent "community" factor from the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, such being her nature.) Some find this kind of inward, self-contained behaviour cloying and parochial. But however considered, it nevertheless instils a local and national "all in this together" willingness of spirit both in times of victory and loss.

Even so, how to finally close and suture this particular wound in the nation's psyche, God only knows. However inconclusive the concluded, I suspect the PIke River scar will remain long and deep on New Zealand's body politic for longer than any can foresee, and no amount of Usenet politicising is going to change it one jot.

[1] Genetics plus quality of education, bearing in mind that, in general, the finest minds are seldom to be found among the political professions. To name three such "seldoms" at random, Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson, David Lange.
