Hi All,

Tony Soprano's boat is named 'The Stugots' ... what does
stugots mean? I've heard it before in other movies such as
Saturday Night Fever, but it was never explained.

Made popular by the HBO Series "The Sopranos", stugots is from "(qu)esto cozzo" in Italian, meaning "this cock" or "this dick". Often used in reference to someone being an asshole.

The real word is "CAZZO". And the real slang word should be "shtugats"
rather than "stugots".

Bullshit.

It's a derivation from questo cazzo (literally, this dick), shortened
it becomes stu cazz or stu cazzo (or even u cazz). In NJ (East Coast
in general) Italian slang (with various changes for regional
pronunciation, etc.) it became, stugots.

The phrase is typically used to express defiance ('no fucking way') or
incredulity ('bullshit') or nothingness (' I got dick') but could also
be used with comical undertones in Italy, and is considered vulgar in
most social situations. In the US it has lost most of its association
with impropriety through common usage.

New Jersey 3rd-generation "Italian" is less accurate than Montreal
1st-generation Italian.

I stand by what I wrote.

The term is derived from "kishte kaz" (my rendition of the Neapolitan
("Napolitopoli", as AJ once stated) slang, not the standard Italian "questo
cazzo"). Thus, SHTUGATS.

Although most people believe that a cazzo is a "dick" and palle are "balls",
cazzo has come to mean the entire genital area.

And as for you - SHTUGATS! (These genitals)

Cazzo is the word for “dick”. Sto is the abbreviation for questo, meaning this. For example sta notte is “this night” or “tonight”. Sto cazzo, or shtugotts in Neapolitan accent, is “this dick”. It is used thusly....pay attention. “What will you give me for this genuine Gucci watch?” “What will I give you? I’ll tell you what I”ll give you. I’ll give you sto cazzo!” Or “How come Nunzio got a new Cadillac, and I got sto cazzo?”

""STUGOTS" means cock. And balls

However the sopranos have enjoyed credit for making up a word that was. very much used in 1974, in GODFATHER II. In. The scene of Vito talking to landlord for the old lady
being evicted for having a dog. Next day he gives him his money back
And re ruces her rent. The day before he says stugots to Michael twice.

It's one of those words that has a coupla meanings depending on how it's used.
It can also mean "nothing" as in, it's nothing, or I have nothing.
Sometimes, it's usage (as in the case of Tony's boat name), it leaves you to determine which is intended.
Sarcasm either way though.

It does not translate literally all that well. The closest I can think of is the Spanish indication of machisimo. On the boat, it would be like saying with an "in-your-face" attitude, that I'm more of a real man/tough guy than you.

Hi All,
Tony Soprano's boat is named 'The Stugots' ... what does
stugots mean? I've heard it before in other movies such as
Saturday Night Fever, but it was never explained.
Rob
My grandfather, who came from Italy, told me it was slang for human trafficker's. Lowest of the lowly. No matter how rich they get they are never accepted as social climbers over there, because of the human suffering. Here they get appointed to the oval office.

Flipping through all these thread s spanning oh a good 15 years worth and nobody really understands how the term cazzo is used.. nor can they spell it for that matter... Some of the letters being used aren't even in the italian alphabet... Yes it's different... along with the word ciao being used as hello and goodbye..cazzo has many meanings from fuck, to dick, and so forth. For example...
All related terms of 'cazzo!'
cazzo
( vulgar ) ( pene ) prick ( vulg )
che cazzo vuoi?
what the fuck ( vulg ) do you want?
testa di cazzo
dickhead ( vulg ) prick ( vulg )
grazie al cazzo!
thanks for nothing!
che film del cazzo!
what a crap ( vulg ) film!
American Italians have no clue and have lost all meaning of our culture..... What is a stugots???? It's not even a word I stopped watching sopranos after I saw that

You are the only one who got it right. People saying Cazzo means shit. Merda means shit. Cazzo means fuck. Che Cazzo - what the fuck? Testa di cazzo - cock sucker. In Italian a word can have multiple meanings depending on what words it’s used with.

Fuck this is fuckin gold I came across it, started reading it and was highly entertained especially after seeing how old the original post was. As far as an answer it all depends on what dialect/region the person saying it is from but yeh the last couple of posts are right it also depends what words are used with it and in which context it is used during a conversation. Most of the time direct translations to English don’t work or make sense (don’t use google translator while travelling). My cousins region they say ca catzo (forgive spelling) translated means “what the dick” although used it’s more like “what the fuck?” Also we’ve all gone of track from the original question but who cares it’s entertaining I do wonder if the original poster has checked back at his original post 17 years later.
Ps sorry if I added to your comment just wanted to add to the post as this post needs to keep going 03 - 20 lets keep it alive hahaha

¡Stugots Means - "this dick"
It's funny seeing all the stupid shit on here. Between all the Soprano's nerds and wanna be Jersey Shore fucks....Anyways...Let's give it some context. I grew up In Paterson NJ and worked for an authentic pizza joint as a kid (J&D's Pizzeria on 21st Ave and 23rd St). I was giving the nickname because I stood up (threw a knife at him for talking shit about my mother) to a big paison (fucking guy was like 24) who was giving me a load a shit when I was like 12. The reaction from "real" Italians was "OOHHH Jimmy! Take it easy! Look at the balls on this guy all of the sudden! Fucking Stugots over here!" And it stuck in that environment.

I have has this license plate for 20 years and always laugh at Californian's who think they know what it means. Another term used in Italian slang that I grew up with was Ugots which is the opposite meaning that you had no balls e.g., uhgots un gul= "I got nothin'!" or UGATS! = AAAAAHHH BULLSHIT! Incidentally, I thought it funny to name my sailboat this as well. The best though is being at a stop light and coming across and old school person from back east who gets it and waves and cracks up laughing. Salud!
