Hi Marco,

Try setting the sample rate of the fluidsynth instance to 48000, some
sound devices can only do 48000 and not 41000. For a better
troubleshooting platform could you download and install the Jack Audio
Connection Kit and follow the WIKI steps to get it going. Then respond
here with the results that you get.

Hi Marco,
Does the organ work with the usual dsound driver selected?
If so, then select 'file' in the audio driver (to clear the Sound
Card's connection with dsound), then select the portaudio driver and
then the ASIO4ALL audio device. Set your Audio buffers to 8 and your
Audio Buffer size to 512. Then look to see if jOrgan is reporting a
problem with the fluidsynth element.
If it is still reporting a problem, then you are probably running into
an issue caused by the newer Audio driver levels of Windows 7 in which
ASIO4ALL will intermittently work or not work depending on what other
applications have been using the sound interface.

I am setting Jack as you recommended. In my case the target property needed
a slight modification: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Jack v1.9.7\jackd.exe" -R -S
-d portaudio -d "ASIO::ASIO4ALL v2"

The VST link you refer to in the WIKI is obsolete.

The reverb sample link is dead (404 error). I manged to locate this:
http://freeverb3.sourceforge.net/mirror/. I could not ope the bz2 file from
this link so I downloaded the zip file instead. I assume they are different
compressed versions of same original file.

I got stuck at: Configure the Fludisynth Sound element to use the JackRouter
device. How is that done? JackRouter does not feature in the dropdown lists.

the Jack PortAudio audio server startup. Start Jack PortAudio, then
start Jack Control, and let me know what Jack Control reports (i.e.
Active, blinking RT, 48000 Hz, etc).

I will be correcting the VST links today, and adding the ReverberateLE
and a few other options as well. Thanks for your report :)

Graham, that's interesting....I often have the same trouble with WIN7 not
giving the ASIO driver free, after having used other audio software.
Sometimes I have to go in AUDIO-playback-properties-advanced and have to
change the settings of exclusive modus, but not conform a standard
procedure........

Specially when switching between dsound and ASIO I think, as my HW always
functions as it is always used under ASIO......

Thanks for the screen shot. It shows an invalid sample rate error, so
modify the command with the rate setting, making it:

jackd.exe -R -S -d portaudio -d "ASIO::ASIO4ALL v2" -r 48000

Also:

Jack Control opens if I double click on it. There was/is no issue with that.

Double clicking JackPortAudio results in a brief appearance of the cmd promp
wndow - nothing else happens.

Graham,

I installed the 64x version and did so in the Program Files (not Program
Files (x84) as indicated by the setup). Is this ok?

Do I need to make any changes to target?

What would I need to do regarding this:

"- installs 64 bits version JackRouter64.dll ASIO/jack bridge
(Warning: unfortunately the installed does not correctly register the
dll. The "regsvr32" tool located in C:/Windows/System32 has to be used
to manually install the dll.)" ?

Should I uninstall the previous installation or should we continue
troubleshooting?

I tried running JackPortAudio. It does not crash; even JackConsol opens
without any errors reported but jOrgan would not load. It crashes and shuts
down almost instantly. A report appears on the desktop (attached).

I configured JPA target similar to what we did with the 32 bit version but
there was no improvement.

Marco,
I must say I am in the same boat as you. Bravely installed Jack, PortAudio,
and Asio4All on my XP Pro Sp3. Miraculously Sagrada Familia 2.1 jOrgan
3.12.1 appears to work 'out of the box', but I cannot configure it
Fluidsynth, Jack, or Port Audio.

I DID get GrandOrgue to 'see' the Asio4all audio driver, but attempting to
do so with jOrgan/Jack has been a no go. I once was given the coordinates
to teleport into GrahamG's instructions for setting up
Fluidsynth/Asio4All/Jack (if memory serves, it was on the Sourceforge wiki)
but I do not find any link to those instructions in the index so I am going
by weak memory and trial and error.

Screen captures of the various windows I have running follow:

Hi Guys,

If the Jack PortAudio target command is correctly configured for your
soundcard/sound device, the command prompt window that opens when
starting Jack PortAudio will remain open and report something along
the lines that the Jack server is starting in realtime mode, Cannot
lock down memory area (No error), and remain open.

If your Jack PortAudio command prompt Window is closing after running
it, then the command in the target is not correctly configured. This
is where you work with me until we have the command prompt window
staying open... :)

Until the Jack server is running, JackRouter will not be available, etc...

@ Marco - I'm waiting to hear that you have a Jack PortAudio command
prompt correctly opening and staying open. Then we'll double check
things with Jack Control before moving on to jOrgan

@Dell, from your screencaps it looks like Jack is running fine. Your
jOrgan screencap tells me that you are running a jOrgan version that
does not have the PortAudio ASIO fluidsynth extension correctly
installed. Could you make sure that all the files in the ZIP ended up
in the correct places? If you need more help with this just let me
know.

I installed revised Jack 1.9.7 over old one; altered target (without the
-48000); got new error. This error will not close quickly, eventually doing
so after several OKs each time getting another message on the cmd prompt
screen:

Did you un-install Jack 1.9.8 before installing 1.9.7? If not, then do
so now. Then re-install Jack 1.9.7.

If you did un-install 1.9.8 before re-installing 1.9.7 then did you
let the VC++ 2008 redistributable run in Repair mode? If not,
re-install Jack 1.9.7 and run the repair now.

If you did un-install 1.9.8, and you did the VC++ 2008 repair, then
re-install 1.9.7 again now anyway to see if that helps...

It looks like you are getting a crash because the
fluidsynth-portuaudio-asio driver can't find jackrouter (libjack.dll).

Let me know what you did, and if any of these suggestions makes a difference

I uninstalled both Jacks (the 1.9.7 and 1.9.8).
I installed the revise 1.9.7 in Program Files (86x) folder.
I chose repair of Visual what-ever-it-is.
I get the dll errors still! (err = 127 etc etc)

One of the "confusions" with your new drivers seems to be that you have to install one or
the other, but cannot install or use both concurrently.

Would it be possible to consolidate both the ASIO and the WDM/KS drivers into a SINGLE
package? I would imagine that in order to do this Sven might have to make some code
changes for the Fluidsynth extension's "Audio device" properties option selector.

Specifically, when the user selects "portaudio" in the jOrgan Fluidsynth "Audio driver"
property drop-down, cause the "Audio device" property drop-down selector to show all
possible WDM/KS choices as well as all possible ASIO choices. Then, when the user selects
a WDM/KS device, the portaudio .dll for WDM/KS is loaded, and when an ASIO interface is
selected, the portaudio .dll for ASIO is loaded.

jOrgan screencap tells me that you are running a jOrgan version that
does not have the PortAudio ASIO fluidsynth extension correctly
installed. Could you make sure that all the files in the ZIP ended up

I am strongly in favour of this; the handling of jOrgan gets more
professional, so that "dummy's " like me do not need tocopy and paste, or
rename internal working files........

Not to mention the lots of times that I erratically report problems becasue

Hi Lynn,

It is possible to create one PortAudio dll with dsound, WDMKS/WaveRT,
ASIO, and WASAPI drivers all together. The reason that I have
separated them is so that we could evaluate and test the individual
drivers and get some idea of what the limitations are. Which I think
we have done quite well.

The one issue with a combined drivers version is that the device
labels do not say what driver they belong to (as you have noted). So
you get a list of what seems to be many audio devices which are
in-fact just one device, with many driver interfaces. I think this
issue needs to be addressed (like having dsound: Name_of_SoundCard,
WDMKS: Name_of_SoundCard, ASIO: Name_of_SoundCard, etc.... so that it
is less confusing for us.

I uninstalled both Jacks (the 1.9.7 and 1.9.8).
I installed the revise 1.9.7 in Program Files (86x) folder.
I chose repair of Visual what-ever-it-is.
I get the dll errors still! (err = 127 etc etc)

Hi Marco,
Did you un-install Jack 1.9.8 before installing 1.9.7? If not, then do
so now. Then re-install Jack 1.9.7.
If you did un-install 1.9.8 before re-installing 1.9.7 then did you
let the VC++ 2008 redistributable run in Repair mode? If not,
re-install Jack 1.9.7 and run the repair now.
If you did un-install 1.9.8, and you did the VC++ 2008 repair, then
re-install 1.9.7 again now anyway to see if that helps...
It looks like you are getting a crash because the
fluidsynth-portuaudio-asio driver can't find jackrouter (libjack.dll).
Let me know what you did, and if any of these suggestions makes a
difference

Hi Marco,

It sounds like there is still something remaining from the previous
installations :(

So, lets attempt these steps to see if we can solve it manually:

1) Open a command prompt (Start > Accessories > Command Prompt)
2) Change directories to your Jack installation (cd "C:\Program Files
(x86)\Jack v1.9.7")
3) De-register the jackrouter.dll (regsvr32 -u jackrouter.dll)
4) Re-register it (regsvr32 jackrouter.dll)
5) Run the Jack PortAudio icon again to see if that helped

If you receive any errors in step 3 or 4 let me know and do not
continue with the next step until that one is resolved.

If this is what shows up in the command window, you are in excellent shape.

It means that jack server is working!
I get exactly the same when running jack v1.9.7 also.
Now you should be able to start Jack Audio Control Kit, the graphical
interface that allows you to make the connections to your sound card.
To do so go All programs/jack v1.9.7/Jack Control and click on it.
Let us know, prferably again with a picture, what you get.

Jackrouter.
As soon as this happens, in Jack Control 's left pane an red instance
javaw should appear, and normally should automatically be connected to
the right pane system.
If not connected, highlight javaw ans (green) system and click connect.
Now you have connected jOrgan's FluidSynth extension to the audio
channels on your sound card.

Some recommendations:

1) on picture 3 setup of Jack Control
- change the sample rate to 44100
- lower perhaps the value in Frames/period to get lower latency; 256 or
512 is suggested

2) picture 4/5 looks ok

3) load jOrgan and then Panos ' Russell.
What do you see happening in Jack control right pane?

1) What sound card are you going to use that has an ASIO driver?
2)What soundfont are you going to load in what disposition of jOrgan?
This will tell us at what sample rate to set Jack Connection as well as
the fluidsynth extension in jOrgan; they have to match.
3) Click on the setup button to open Jack Control setup, and if you
want to make it easy to help you, send a picture again.
Here sample rate can be set, and also number of buffers and some other
parameters, but for the time being leave them as they are.
4) Click on the Connect button, and a window opens showing 2 panes.
Before loading a sounfont in jOrgan you will see "system" in both left
and right pane.
- Left pane system are audio inputs; these could be line in or
microphone in, depending on your sound card.
Make sure this one is not connected to anything now.
- Right pane are your audio out channels. Clicking on the little arrow
next to (green) system, how many are shown?
5) As soon as you have loaded a soundfont in jOrgan, go into construct
mode and open the fluidsynth extension.

Erik & Graham,

I disconnected all connections that I created on Jack Audio Connection Kit.
I adjusted the Sample rate of Russell organ to 44100 and noticed the
addition of "Java" on the Jack ACK and the disappearance of that red x on
the Russell SF element.

No sound until I clicked on 1 of the 2 "out" (ie out1) and created
connections with the 6 "playbacks" in the right window A N D ....... M U S I
C !!!! I connected the second out (ie out2) and the sound seems louder.

I am using the jOrgan keyboard so far. I am still not sure about latency
benefits yet. It seems to me there is noticeable latency. Why? (Sorry
Panos.... but that's my experience on my system and playing just one note at
a time. I didn't experience that with dsound or even leaving driver and
device both blank!!). Sound is pretty good though on these tiny speakers. I
hope to check out things further later today.

I noticed there is a display of magnitude of latency in the Settings tab of
Jack ACK. It should a value of 42.7ms with Frames/Period 1024 and Sample
Rate 48000. Adjusting these to 16 and 192000 I brought the latency value to
0.167 ms! Periods/Buffer left at 2 (higher value increases latency).

When I close everything, how do I get all this going again without running
into problems? Certainly I would not try this on Easter Day church service
or indeed at any service until I am convinced the result is reproducible and
reproducible with ease. I am not confident in getting the whole set up, up
and running a second time.

Ah, this must be the problem. I installed jOrgan 3.12.2 but did not
install any special extensions (some how I thought this was included like on
Linux).

I have checked the wiki Fluidsynth tutorial but still find no links to where

'repair' warning? Would there be any help if I were to compile with
Visual Studio 2008? Not that I know how, but I could with proper
prompting.

I chose repair when installing Jack, but no idea why, and frankly, it is a
bit unnerving so soon after just doing a massive MS vulnerability patch
(does the 'repair' undo the safety patch?)

Hi Dell,

The 'repair' is in regard to the Jack for Windows installation, of
which I am only involved as a tester and user. Jack 1.9.7 was compiled
by Stephane Letz using the Microsoft VC++ 2008 compiler (not VS 2005,
my dlls for fluidsynth/portaudio have been compiled in VS 2005). When
installing Jack, the installer will automatically start the
installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (i.e. the
dlls [code library files] that are need to run applications that were
built with that compiler). The installation detects if the VC++ 2008
files are already on your computer, and if they are then it gives you
the option to 'repair' the installation or uninstall it. Choosing
'repair' simply makes sure that those specific dll files are all still
where they need to be. It should do nothing else than make sure you
have those library files that are specific so that version of the VC++
compiler.

Jack 1.9.8 (which is being tested at the moment) has been compiled
with VC++ 2010 compiler, and during initial testing of the first few
versions that installer did not have the VC++ 2010 redistributable
installer (as both Stephane and my self were running Visual Studio
2010 on our test computers). Once we had a wider test base and were
installing on computers that did not have Visual Studio 2010 (that has
all the 2010 library files and more!), we identified that bug (those
dll files were missing and so Jack was not working) and Stephane made
the changes to remove the VC++ 2008 redistributable installer and put
in the one for 2010, which then allowed Jack 1.9.8 to work.

Basically a lot of technical jargon/hot air in this post, hope it
makes some sense :)

Your explanation of the libraries issue is helpful, and if not completely
comforting, at least partially so (provided that the missing libraries
replaced are not security vulnerabilities intentionally removed earlier!)

I will try to redownload the Portaudio files later. I have renewed
confidence that this install is possible.

Once installed, I may rethink which computer to have this system installed
on.

             Is your jOrgan computer also used for general Internet activities? I always think it's best to avoid that if you can afford to dedicate a machine to jOrgan. It may be convenient put it on line briefly to download stuff, but keep it offline most of the time, and also not have any personal information, credit card stuff etc on it. That way security patches don't matter so much.

My jOrgan computer is a Puppy Linux stand alone. The one I am experimenting
with PortAudio is my general internet activities computer and yes, it is
connected to the internet. It is impractical for me to have more than the 4
desktops and 3 laptops I have currently, if for no other reason than
physical space constraints. Additionally, it is not really convenient to
download cutting edge software by sneaker net. If I had a dedicated
computer for each of my software hobbies, I would have to be an Apple store!
In summary, I much prefer software that does not require a house of cards
installation with outdated libraries ;-)

Ah, I didn't quite appreciate the scale of your computer activities!  

It's not hard to miss the breadth of interest given the (sometimes)
shallowness of my knowledge. Between 2D & 3D graphics, video, and
animation, audio, and database apps and various programming environments, as
well as a 'going paperless' office, not to mention Ubuntu and Puppy and MS
Windows XP, I dream of applications that 'play well' together and do not
expose my personal files attackers.

Of course, no one is more safety conscious than I, but to be truly secure,
the only way is to secure a safe deposit box large enough for a room full of
paperwork, and throw away the key. Very inconvenient though, so security
always has a cost benefit ratio for me.

Ah - my problem was the corrupted fluidsynth extension download, which Graham
kindly emailed to me personally. I now have jOrgan 3.13 beta6 running with
Asio4all and the portaudio fluidsynth extension. Having had a taste of
reverb on my underpowered linux computer, I am very tempted to push forward
on reverb on this computer, but I do not have a convenient console
controller to motivate (my organ is in the other room and I draw the line at
moving this tower!)

Time will tell. Budget does not allow new hardware acquisition at the
moment.

After some limited testing I seem only to have ability to add one Fluidsynth
to Segrada...so I moved on to Panos' Oberhausbergen organ.
Where...strangely, the Portaudio/Asio4All driver/device combo produced
latency which was way too long to be acceptable (as in half a second or so)
but the default dsound driver/creative driver was nearly instantaneous. I
mucked around with Buffer settings but could not solve this, so I guess I am
confused as to what the Portaudio driver can accomplish, at least on my
system.

Roy,This is the best solution to many problems with computers, thanks for posting.
Indeed best if one can have a dedicated jOrgan computer, I even go further and say with no Internet at all ! Download with the other, scan, clean if to, transfer with a stick or SD card to the dedicated machine.This way, opening task manager one would see a few apps eating precious memory needed for the organ/instrument ect, and no interference from net based programms all the time. Update this delete that, this is available, go now and the rest.So in a way I posted again, like a hardware instrument, not a general use computer.

Obie here kills...... Joseph's samples are loud and clear, with straight Asio or with Jack/Asio, there's no latency, unless you didn't target Jack to Asio........(right click jackportaudio icon on desktop, properties, target, after portaudio type :-p 512 -d "ASIO::ASIO4ALL v.2", apply and OK.Open then Jack server with jackportaudio icon and you know the rest.

After some limited testing I seem only to have ability to add one Fluidsynth
to Segrada...so I moved on to Panos' Oberhausbergen organ. 
Where...strangely, the Portaudio/Asio4All driver/device combo produced
latency which was way too long to be acceptable (as in half a second or so)
but the default dsound driver/creative driver was nearly instantaneous.   I
mucked around with Buffer settings but could not solve this, so I guess I am
confused as to what the Portaudio driver can accomplish, at least on my
system.

Thanks, Panos, but perhaps you misunderstood. I am not using Jack at all -
simply the PortAudio extension and targeting Obie's Fluidsynth in jOrgan to
PortAudio/Asio4All (rather than dsound or whatever). I have horrible
latency that way. If I go direct to dsound, I have almost no latency, which
is almost exactly opposite what I would expect.

Keep in mind, I am using an Edirol UM-1 MIDI-USB adapter which always seems
to add a LITTLE latency, but not enough to notice with the dsound option.
I think I am missing something crucial here.

PS As for one computer per application concept - I don't think that was the
intention of multipurpose computers was it? But I agree it would be simpler
in some ways if money and space and power/peripheral complexity were no
object. Of course, I would have to buy nice audio cards and video cards for
each one, etc. And Roy's point about connecting to the internet for
convenience is absolutely true. If you have not used a Linux OS like
Ubuntu, you simply have not discovered true software installation nirvana -
windows applications are a PITA by comparison. With Ubuntu (and presumably
Puppy, although my companion animal is not nourished by network connection
presently) it's simply 'search' and 'apply' and it downloads and installs
(after you type in a password of course).

               The reason I said it may be convenient to put it on the web temporarily is I often work in Ubuntu. Most things you could download and save have dependencies, ie other things which must also be downloaded. When you hunt down and download all the dependencies, you find they they all have further dependencies. It's a bit like what the police say about criminals being blackmailed...

Trying to collect all the chains of dependencies to save to disk for transfer to another machine is an absolute PITA.

   On the other hand, if you work online you can just type:

  sudo apt-get install [The program you actually want]

     and off it trots, finding all the dependencies for you.

   Alternatively, if you have the main program as a .deb file you can just double click it or right click-open with Gdebi package manager and off you go.

But, to tell you the truth is not so PITA for me to transfer into a "virgin lap" just :Java, jOrgan, Asio4all, JackRouter, Viena, ZeroX, IzotopeRX, TWE, Sony Sourge90,WinRAR, Alcohol 120%, NotePad++, Savihost, SIR2 & Lexicon PCM , LinuxSampler and REAPER, along with 3GB dispositions and 10GB files for Linuxsampler.
It maybe sound like hardcore sex but is not. Is great fun !Of course it can be more simpler :Java, jOrgan, Asio4all, JackRouter, Savihost and Reverberate LE + Disposor even more simple :Java, jOrgan, Asio & dispos

Hi Panos & GrahamG!

I just finished an extensive chat troubleshoot session with GrahamG (thank
you Graham!!) and I am happy to report that I can now rest my head on my
pillow this evening (night now) knowing I have almost NO LATENCY with
ASIO4ALL v2 !!!!!!

It was not my CPU but apparently my rather wimpy Creative AudioPCI
ES1371/ES1373 WDM card plus the usual accumulation of errors and ignorance
on my part when previously experimenting by trial and error:

1) I didn't realize it was important to go into construct mode and refresh
PortAudio settings on Fluid Synth element between each portaudio
configuration change by changing back and forth to dsound or some other
driver.
2) I learned that the little blue mark in ASIO buffer size setting is
apparently an indicator of whatever I have buffer size set to in jOrgan. I
am to drag the slider over it to match. In my case, it needed to downsize
to change to 256 and 2 buffers (I may later have to increase 256 to 384 or
512 if I get stutter with a lot of stops says Graham) Smaller buffer =
less latency, but increase risk of stutter
3) I had to untick the hardware buffer and tick "Always Resample
44.1->48khz" and "Force WDM Driver to 16 bit".

Another happy camper, thanks to GrahamG's patient instruction.

PS - Panos, when I get more confident, I may try and set up the Jack control
connections as you suggested and maybe some reverb on this unit.

GrahamG also gave me some evil ideas about using the LAN extension for
jOrgan to run this computer from the other room. I'm not quite sure about
where the input device would be (MIDI in) but that's for another day anyway.

I can even imagine some interesting online collaboration (since with Midi
Over Lan theoretically distance is no object - although I can imagine there
might be a touch of latency between continents...the jOrgan
orchestra...hehehehe

            I too hope no one is looking to me as a Linux "Expert". I've picked up quite a few bits and pieces relevant to jOrgan and cobbled it all together for Bill Skees' Guide, but there's far more Linux lore I don't know than do!

   Someone told me the word "Expert" is a hybrid... "Ex" meaning a has-been and "Spurt", meaning a drip under pressure. Go figure!  

    As you say, regular aps are particularly easy in Ubuntu. For stuff like Qsynth you can just go to Ubuntu software centre and enter it in the search box. Click install, give the inevitable password and you're in business.

                As I remarked before I'm a bit hazy on detail here but if you've already got everything running using the Jack connection panel you should be able to create a patchbay from it in one shot using the "Snapshot" function.

And wait a minute : Direct sound with Hauptwerk 1.23 plays gooood ! with GrandOrgue (if not select Asio) very good too (win7) but with Fluidsynth the chemistry didn;t work it seems.... As a prove , now we can enjoy Fluidsynth's power when Asio took the audio control. A different fluidsynth it seems but it's the same....

Graham....... he's good isn't he ? One of the best, like a digital guardian angel IMHO....

Yeah, he's the best. Very happy to have this working. Perhaps not best to
call 'direct sound' as that would confuse with dsound driver. I am using
the ASIO4ALL v2 & port audio extension of jOrgan. Graham hinted that he
may add a little writeup to what we did to the tutorials section of jOrgan
sourceforge wiki.

At the end of a splitting-headache day at work, I come home, eat dinner, and
after watching DVD movie, play jOrgan! Obie is still working, so I get
brave and decide to try Christie on jOrgan 3.13b6 (my wimpy Linux computer
somehow is unable to play Christie on the Live CD version - no graphical
user interface, so I'm curious what it will look like on my faster Windows
computer).

Well - Rick's interface skin is beautiful, but for some reason I cannot make
ASIO behave. Always a "RED X" in the audio card output in ASIO4All....then
I spy the 'christie3.13by_SingleFS01 version. I install, and it plays VERY
nicely, but has no skin - just text and boxes. Ugly! Then I double check -
I did not extract the skin zip files! Aha, I do that, and reload Christie
from start, set up keyboard channels and it already is defaulted to ASIO4ALL
- PortAudio. Wow!

How does it sound so good with only 4mb compressed? How I ask? I play
"Beautiful Dreamer" sample Midi file...sounds very good with headphones (it
is late here, as in past midnight, and I must not wake sleeping
beauty)....this is FUN!

I've even figured out how to copy the dispositions to a 13 folder before
opening (thanks to reading this list and retaining at least a little of what
I read!)...

So what other dispositions can I play with the ASIO4ALL plugin?
Oberhausbergen, Christie, ...

thanks to you geniuses out there who work hard to make software like this!
I think my Dad is really going to enjoy this (I'm going to take a DVD up
when I visit him next weekend and hopefully install it on his new laptop for
him). He thought Miditzer was cool.

At the end of a splitting-headache day at work, I come home, eat dinner, and
after watching DVD movie, play jOrgan! Obie is still working, so I get
brave and decide to try Christie on jOrgan 3.13b6 (my wimpy Linux computer
somehow is unable to play Christie on the Live CD version - no graphical
user interface, so I'm curious what it will look like on my faster Windows
computer).
Well - Rick's interface skin is beautiful, but for some reason I cannot make
ASIO behave. Always a "RED X" in the audio card output in ASIO4All....then
I spy the 'christie3.13by_SingleFS01 version. I install, and it plays VERY
nicely, but has no skin - just text and boxes. Ugly! Then I double check -
I did not extract the skin zip files! Aha, I do that, and reload Christie
from start, set up keyboard channels and it already is defaulted to ASIO4ALL
- PortAudio. Wow!
How does it sound so good with only 4mb compressed? How I ask? I play
"Beautiful Dreamer" sample Midi file...sounds very good with headphones (it
is late here, as in past midnight, and I must not wake sleeping
beauty)....this is FUN!
I've even figured out how to copy the dispositions to a 13 folder before
opening (thanks to reading this list and retaining at least a little of what
I read!)...
So what other dispositions can I play with the ASIO4ALL plugin?
Oberhausbergen, Christie, ...
thanks to you geniuses out there who work hard to make software like this!
I think my Dad is really going to enjoy this (I'm going to take a DVD up
when I visit him next weekend and hopefully install it on his new laptop for
him). He thought Miditzer was cool.

Please try the main Christie disposition using "dsound" you will get the
full effect of multiple instances of fluidsynth. I would be interested
in your comments.

I am not sure why the skin didn't work first time for you in the single
fluidsynth version. You should not need to extract that file for it to
work. Did you keep it all together in its own folder? I do try hard to
keep all the internal file addressing correct so it opens easily for
everyone. If I have made a mistake I want to learn what it is and fix it.

The sound is a combination of the brilliant work of Bruce Miles and the
genius of Sven in his ever evolving jOrgan. I am just putting the two
together.

@Roy - breakneck speed I should say! I am not trying to keep up (or I will
break my neck) but since I am rather new at this and had no working system,
I thought I might as well try the 'latest-greatest' So far so good!

By the way, with more experimentation today with the general presents, I
found a slight amount of what sounded like overmodulation, which completely
disappeared when I cranked the Fluidsynth gain down to 0.1 and increased the
system audio to compensate. Don't know if that is the most elegant
solution, but it worked (I suggest that the gain be lower by default in this
disposition, but this may just be my audio card and PortAudio combination)

@Rick - thanks for your comments. In review and with experimentation, I see
I did not need to expand the skins. I'm not completely sure how it
happened, but it looks like I did not even have a skins zip file in the
folder at all, possibly because of an error in copying (I carefully copied
the 3.10 Christie from my 3.10 folder into the 3.13 folder before opening
with the 3.13 beta 6 version of jOrgan). So my expanding the skin.zip file
was a red herring and a waste - what it really needed was the zip file.
Good to know!

- As for comparing the dsound and PortAudio, all comments which follow
should be taken with a big grain of salt because as you are probably aware
by now, I have little clue about what I am doing, but since you asked, I did
go back and knowing what I know now about setting up jOrgan, I tried the
multi-Fluidsynth version of Christie with dsound drivers. I wasn't sure
how to install various versions of jOrgan, so I may have ruined the test by
doing so, but I used the jOrgan 3.13-beta6 for my side-by-side comparisons,
changing only the disposition (I even used the same "Beautiful Dreamer" midi
file).

Bottom line: MultiInstance Fluidsynth with dsound on my wimpy Creative
ES1371/1373 card was terrible! Sounded like a tinny electronic organ.
Initially, I had so much stutter, I could not even play without
embarrassment, so I cranked the buffers up to 1024 and that solved that.
There seemed to be a very wide stereo separation (almost totally right or
left panned) wearing headphones, but almost no reverb. On my system, the
sound level was also very much lower, so I had to crank the fluidsynth gain
up to 0.96 for each instance.

With PortAudio/Asio4All single fluidsynth instance, I can almost believe I
am listening to the Castro Wurlitzer Pipe TO! It has a much more mellow,
'rounder' and 'fuller' tone, and doesn't sound tinny or like a computer tone
generator.

Again, I must emphasize that this difference may be simple artifact of some
bonehead configuration mistake on my part, or perhaps my el-cheapo audio
card. It should definitely not reflect in any way on the underlying
multi-fluidsynth disposition.

I might ask, what is the intended purpose of multiple Fluidsynths? I
didn't seem to have a problem with polyphony using the single instance, as I
'played along' with the MIDI file using my keyboard and didn't notice any
missing notes. So that's at least 15-20 note polyphony.

If there is anything more I can test I will try to do so.

Thanks again for these wonderful dispositions! Unfortunately, this is all
tempting me to invest in a newer computer for the devoting to the organ
console.... (I'm doing all Windows testing with a portable Casio keyboard
because the Allen console has the Puppy linux version) :-(
