Real race tyres to return in 2018

Softer tyres, new construction, more grip and varied strategies will hopefully bring us visually an even more exciting qually and overtaking during the race.

Teams must select tyres 8 weeks before a Euro race and 14 weeks before a flyaway race. For example the deadline for Australian GP tyre choice was the 14th Dec 2017 and by the 4th January 2018 Bahrain and China.

Teams get 13 sets per weekend.
Pirelli choose 3 of those tyres, one will be the qually tyre the softest and then the two race tyres.

Thank your deity that all compounds are now one step softer and they will be staggering choices as you'll see in China. They have added a SuperHard and HyperSoft to slick race tyre range and there's still two Wet tyres but they have added a second Inter. The compounds are:
SuperHard (Orange), Hard (Blue), Medium, Soft, SuperSoft, UltraSoft, HyperSoft (Pink).
BaseWet(hard), SoftWet, BaseInter(hard), SoftInter.

New materials and carcass design provides improved distribution over the contact patch. I also noticed in the car releases that the new tyres look rounder.

Compound Choices so far:
Australia: Soft(r), SuperSoft(r), UltraSoft(q).
Bahrain: Medium(r), Soft(r), SuperSoft(q).
China: Medium(r), Soft(r), UltraSoft(q), #Note the double step!.
Azerbaijan: Soft(r), SuperSoft(r), UltraSoft(q).

So hopefully we'll see a return of interesting strategies (and the stupid fools can sing "frangible tyres" as much as they like, lol).

Nando said of the Hypersoft, "That's a qually tyre!", unfortunately I won't see it in Melbourne :-( but for those who recall the old single lap qually tyres (and engines) we'll get a small taste of what we remember and you new blokes will get a taste of what you missed. Monaco will probably be the first time we'll see the HyperSoft.

Only ELEVEN tyre types?

And none of them emit coloured fog, or sparks, or make cool noises?
And the lazy driver still sits comfy while other people remove and replace them.

My god the sport is so boring.

What I don't like is the requirement that you must run the same compound on all four wheels.

I recall that one year at Hungary, Senna deliberately ran a mixed set. The front tyre on one side wears faster than the others at the H'Ring, and he figured he could save a pit stop by running a harder tyre on the one corner of the car.

Am I right in remembering that for one race, perhaps Estoril, Jacques Villeneuve once insisted had his Williams crew set up the front wheels with different (?) caster/toe/rebound because he knew there was one long curving part of the track where it would help him take Schumacher ---? Anyone?

Too bad one couldn't run any four tires at a time, as long as, by the
end of the race, you had used the equivalent of two complete different
compounds.

For example, two softs on the front and two hards on the rear for one
stint, and then two softs on the rear and two hards on the front for
another stint.

Can you use three different (dry) compounds during the race? There are
three available, as I recall.

Yes, if you have them left after practice and qually. The video I linked in
the OP of the 'pretty presenter' thread explains all of what build did plus
some. There's also this one;

Last year there was always a mandatory compound for quallies and another for the race. You had to use the mandatories, but could otherwise use what you wanted from the three compounds made available.

That's a bright idea - the driver has to get out and change all the tyres.

Huh? I don't recall seeing non-round tyres before?

No-stopper, with a first or last lap switch?

Misreading the question and redefining non-stop.

Hmm. Maybe if there is a first/early long yellow then they might try it. Guess it will depend on the actual lap delta in real race conditions.
